At The Abbey: A Real Wedding–Nikera & Patrick

When Nikera sent me her beautiful Real Wedding just up the road from my house at Bolton Abbey in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, I couldn’t wait to share it – and to get some of that fresh air for myself! Enjoy Nikera and Patrick’s big day, and while you do, I’m off to take in the fine Yorkshire scenery… followed by lunch at Betty’s, Harrogate. Perfect.

Our wonderful day was on Saturday 21st May at Bolton Abbey in Skipton with the reception in the Yorkshire Dales in a village called Burnsall at The Devonshire Fell. We chose peacock colours as our theme and inspiration. We had peacock vintage invitations, used the colours and feathers in all my flowers by Berries Florist in Skipton and my mum hand painted the menu cards, table plan and place names with peacock feathers, lily and a vine leaf design.

My husband and male bridal party wore suits from Yorkshire Menswear with different tones to suit the three colours in the peacock colour scheme.

My beautiful gown was from Confetti and Lace in Harrogate. My bridesmaids dresses were handmade by Jo Finnegan in Harrogate and completely different styles and colours (teal, cobalt blue and a sea green… one shoulder, 60s halter neck and floaty empire line) I really wanted my girls to feel comfortable and wear something that would flatter their individual shapes. My chief made fabulous peacock feather and diamante fascinators for the girls which looked great.

We had a chamber choir, Vocalis, who sang Wonderful World, In A Country Churchyard, and The Lord Bless you and Keep You… they were terrific and made the ceremony special. I went down the aisle to Sigur Ros Hoppipola (BBC Planet theme music) so an eclectic mix!

Having our pictures taken in the ruins was fab and thankfully the weather was kind as we had a nice spring day. The Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream trolley outside the church which I organised after the ceremony also went down well!

I work for homeless charity Emmaus so instead of favours we made a donation to the local project in Leeds.

There were a few surprises: my Scottish father organised a piper after the ceremony and my close friend in the USA made a video which was played at the reception. It was emotional at times as my husband’s mother sadly died at Christmas in 2008 and I missed my grandparents and absent friends and family.
.
We had an amazing day and felt so lucky because of the love and warmth of the people around us.
