Under Canvas! A Real Wedding In The North East – Saskia & Matthew

Concluding a hat trick of North East celebrations at the start of this week, this morning we have the fabulous tipi wedding of Real Bride Saskia and her husband Matthew, sent to me by Alison Groves Photography.  Saskia is clearly a lady who chooses not to do things by the rule book – with fantastic results!

Saskia says: We were married on 20th August 2011 at Morpeth Town Hall. The party was at The Stables in Brinkburn. We stayed at the venue all week together with our family and friends.  My husband’s family is from Newcastle and we wanted a country wedding in Northumberland.

We didn’t really have a theme, although our wedding invitation was based on ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ poem. Our daughters’ dresses were cream with light green and yellow from Monsoon and my dress was ivory. The flowers were wildflowers and herbs from the garden in green and yellow tints. This was not particularly planned, we were lucky to be able to raid the garden of a cousin who lives nearby.

I had a Vivienne Westwood dress, quite short and summery as we originally had planned to get married in South Africa.  I carried a stem of orchids.

We hired an amazing tipi style tent from Papakata for our reception and enjoyed an afternoon tea party with crockery from Julie Clay at The Vintage Tea Party with catering by Zoe from organic farm Thistleyhaugh and a hog roast by Neil Wilkins. The tent was spectacular especially when the fire was lit in the evening.

We chose a lemon cake with berries and white chocolate by Oxley’s of Morpeth. It was delicious.

I have lots of happy memories from the day:  the journey to Morpeth on the vintage bus (by Dreadnought Coaches) with lots of friends, the wedding itself, the reception in the blazing sun, the tea party, the various speeches and songs, dinner in the tent, dancing around the fire (we had a great DJ, Steven Dunn from Unit 44 in Newcastle!) and also the next day when lots of people came back for champagne and cake and a nice walk.

We actually went on honeymoon before we got married… to South Africa.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to think what kind of wedding you want, research online, call around and compare prices and then make a detailed budget before you start. It is good to keep on top of things as you will start to get carried away and spend a fortune.
