Sweethearts. A Real Engagement In York – Siobhan & Sam
Posted on: 12/08/2013
So, it might be that it’s Monday, that I’m still getting rid of those post-baby hormones or that I could do with an unbroken night’s sleep, but really I think it’s just that today’s newly engaged couple are just so damn lovely, that I’m blogging this pretty shoot with big fat tears running down my cheeks!
As regular readers will know, I feature a whole lot of beautiful, touching Real Weddings and engagement stories here at Brides Up North (don’t believe me, take a look) but although I enjoy each and every single one, it’s rare that I have to reach for the tissues.
Obviously head over heels in love and so sweet about each other, University lovebirds Siobhan and Sam have clearly got something very special going on, and I wish them even more love, luck and happiness in their lives together. You guys owe me a box of Kleenex.

Siobhan says: After unknowingly being manipulated into a shopping trip with Francesca (my Chief Bridesmaid), followed by dinner at a local pub with Sam I returned home to find a balloon attached to a length of string saying ‘These are a few of my favourite memories of us’. As I followed the trail around the house there were lots of photos of the fantastic times we’ve had together and sweet little messages on yet more balloons. When I eventually reached the end of the trail in the bedroom there was a gift bag that said ‘Put this on and follow me’. It was a blindfold. Once I had put it on I was taken into the loft and told to take it off when I was ready. As I opened my eyes I saw fairy lights, candles, roses and straight ahead of me a canvas that had lots of words inside a heart, the bigger ones across the middle saying ‘Will You Marry Me? 18th February 2013′. When I looked to my left Sam was down on one knee holding a box with the most beautiful ring ever inside it. Of course my answer was ‘Yes!’ We couldn’t have been happier.
Sam says: I don’t know what the biggest relief was, finally getting rid of the secret I had been carrying around for weeks or the fact that the love of my life agreed to marry me!
We are planning to get married in July 2014 at Barmbyfield Barn in Barmby Moor, York.
Well, we met at university back in 2006 and we both fancied each other from that moment on. We would hold hands on a night out but we didn’t end up together until the summer of 2010 when we were on a group holiday in Portugal. Spending such a large amount of time together just confirmed what we had thought before so we had to do something about it. And we did. And now we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us together!
The moment I met him at university I knew he was the one but it took a long time for us to have our first date! There was no defining first date but we both say we fell in love in Portugal.
Siobhan says: Sam is my best friend. He is absolutely drop dead gorgeous. He is kind, charming, funny, caring and reliable, all of which comes wrapped up in one big, manly package. When he puts his arms around me and cuddles me I feel like nothing in the world could ever go wrong. When I’m with him I feel safe. Whenever I think of him I get butterflies in my tummy. He makes me one extremely happy lady and when I think of our future I get super excited about everything we will be.
Sam says: Siobhan is bossy, sulky and definitely knows what she wants. These may sound like bad traits but these are the traits that make my life the happiest it could ever be. Her bossiness is what drives me to get up early every morning and jam pack my days with fun filled adventures with her. Her sulkiness is what keeps me on my toes to either make her happy or wind her up depending on what sort of mood I am in (both give me great pleasure!). The fact that she knows what she wants compliments my indecisiveness perfectly and in the grand scheme of things what she wants is what I want.
I know that she is going to be the most beautiful bride the world has ever seen and I can’t wait to see her walk down that aisle and more importantly spend the rest of my life with her by my side.
Our biggest wish is to continue feeling as happy as we do now, with a group of mini Murphlers surrounding us!
We really enjoyed the engagement shoot, although it did feel a little strange being in front of the camera because it’s not something we’ve done before! We’re really pleased with the photos though, the beautiful weather helped them to look even better – fingers crossed we get the same on our wedding day, exactly a year later! A few family members have already asked for a copy of the photos and we know we’ll certainly be framing some for the house and the wedding but generally we’ll just treasure them forever.
Being a Northern girl myself I just love to go on Brides Up North for inspiration. We really want to make our day our own with tonnes of DIY details so Brides Up North fills us with ideas. We’ll be back to share our own Real Wedding next year!
Congratulations Siobhan & Sam!
