The usual blog schedule has been all of a scramble in the excitement of this week (did you miss our big news?!), but this afternoon it’s business as usual as we return to the Real Wedding loveliness with a particularly lovely one.  Hayley and Adam’s big day is small, simple but super special.  From their outdoor speeches and quirky touches to Hayley’s cute bridal bob and glittering gown, these photographs fill me with joy.

Hayley says:  Adam asked me to marry him in New York City on 21st December 2011. Adam booked a surprise trip leaving the day after our staff Christmas party so I was a bit worse for wear. When Adam woke me up and told me to pack for a surprise trip, I said ‘I don’t like surprises!’ but I’ve always wanted to go to New York and it was amazing at Christmas time.

We were married on 3rd August 2013.  We had a very small ceremony at Leeds Town Hall then headed to The Cheerful Chilli in Otley for our reception.

We started visiting the Cheerful Chilli when I started going to a running cub near the tea rooms every Sunday morning. Adam hates running but he’d come along to watch because the cakes at the Cheerful Chilli afterwards are so delicious! They had never held a wedding reception there before but they were really keen and the place is so quirky and intimate we thought it could be great for us.

We didn’t really have a theme, we just wanted the whole day to be really relaxed, but we did aim for a vintage, 1920-40’s tea-party style vibe.

I chose a stunning 1920’s platinum gown called ‘Eden’ by Jenny Packham  from Louella Bride in Rawdon. From the second I tried it on, I knew it was the perfect dress for me.

Adam wore a taupe suit from Ted Baker with individual hand-picked accessories from a variety of shops and boutiques in Leeds. I bought Adam some cufflinks that had the New York skyline etched into them and Adam bought me some vintage-style earrings.

Our two bridesmaids wore navy blue ‘Wrap and Twist’ dresses from BHS.  One of our bridesmaids was very heavily pregnant so the dress provided versatility as her shape changed. Our groomsmen wore their own suits but we gave them matching ties and pocket squares from TM Lewin.

The bridesmaids and I carried bouquets of gypsophila from Flowers by Karen in Guiseley. They also made us some lovely buttonholes for our family.

Adam’s mum made a traditional three tier fruitcake. His sister got married 6 weeks earlier and she made the cake for her too so she’s becoming quite an expert!

JB Creatives photographed our wedding and made our fantastic menus for our high tea stands. JB Creatives is run by one of the nicest people you will ever meet, so many of our guests commented to us just how friendly and hardworking Jane, our photographer, was.

We added loads of personal touches to our day.  My brother walked me down the aisle and sang our first dance song. My mum made hundreds of colourful paper butterflies to make a hanging tree decoration at our venue. We handmade pom-poms, bunting, place settings, card box and we also made a photo-wall with at least one photo of each of our guests from events/times in our past. As a final touch, we printed out lyrics and got everyone to sing along to our first dance song, ‘Hey Ho’ by the Lumineers.

The room we had our meal in got very warm by the end of the meal so we decided to have our speeches outside. There were only 20 guests at the meal, so we were able to individually thank everyone. We also enjoyed the time that we got to spend on our own.

We had a brilliant acoustic jazz band called ‘Jazzmundo’ play a two-hour set outside in the garden. They must have enjoyed themselves because they played for 4 hours!

After the wedding we travelled down the west coast of USA in a convertible for four weeks.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be don’t stress the little things. At the end of the day, if you have all your friends and family together in one place you’re bound to have an amazing day. It is about the two of you demonstrating your love and commitment to one another. The rest should just be a great party.

Congratulations Hayley & Adam!
