One of the things I adore about curating these pretty pages is the opportunity to introduce you lovely lot to people like this man: Mark Newton Weddings. Brides Up North Featured Supplier Mark can capture your big day beautifully, and he’s got an early Christmas pressie up his sleeve for you lucky things too.
How did you get into wedding photography?
I started out as a music and portrait photographer. Shooting gigs, and band promo portraits, I originally trained as a Graphic Designer getting a degree which was heavily photography focused. This has led to my style of photography having a very strong graphic feel. Picking up some details that might normally get missed, and through the experience gained shooting gigs using low and available light to capture moments as they happen naturally. I think that this has helped me to become a very relaxed wedding photographer, and happy to work well in a range of different venues. Helping the day run smoothly without getting in the way.
Why wedding photography specifically?
After shooting my first wedding I was hooked. It’s a long hard day, but great fun, seeing all the hard work and effort that’s been put into the planning all coming together friends and family catching up and generally having a wonderful day. There’s nothing better than photographing excited and happy people.
What is your favourite thing about being a wedding photographer?
The best thing about being a wedding photographer is sharing the photos after the day and hearing how happy the couples are. (Especially if they lead to tears of joy).
How do you get couples to relax on the day?
On the wedding day I try to keep everything as relaxed as possible, covering what happens naturally on the day. I aim to be their as an extra friend for the day.
Any advice to any brides who don’t like to have their picture taken?
The best thing I can say is try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Every bride looks wonderful in her own way. You want photos that capture you both as a couple. Enjoy yourself and don’t think about having the pictures taken at all. That’s why I’m there.
Any really memorable weddings that you have captured?
I love shooting weddings where the bride and groom’s characters and personalities come through. Trevor and Linda-Mary’s wedding earlier this year in Manchester Northern Quarter was lovely bringing together loads of little details that summed them up. A english/swedish mix up bringing together elements from each of their home countries as well as plenty of personal details. Linda-Mary even brought her leather jacket along for a few photos. Being at the NQ2220 gallery Trevor and his friends all DJ’ed between them and the evening was a great party with all the closest friends and family dancing away right into the early hours.
Are you married?
Me and my Fiancée are getting married in the new year at the wonderful Victoria Baths in Manchester. It’s a totally unique venue and we’ve got full control of what we want to do which is exciting. We’re going for quite a vintage feel to tie in with the venue, we can’t wait to share our day with all our friends and family.
Any funny stories to share?
Plenty, but a good photographer doesn’t kiss and tell!
What is included in your "package"?
With my package I keep things as simple as possible. I offer a single package which allows couples a full days coverage. This normally runs from Bridal/groom preparations in the morning right through to the evening celebrations, and covers everything in-between. After the wedding I edit all the images and supply them to the Bride & Groom to keep forever, along with offering a wide range of beautiful Luxury Albums and high quality prints. Extras include the popular pop up photo booth which is a great way of getting shots of all the evening guests. The cost of this is £1300.

Former lawyer and bride to be Julia founded Brides Up North in 2010 with a chip on her shoulder. Frustrated by the poor Northern presence in glossy bridal magazines and online, she decided to do something about it herself. Astounded by the rapid growth of her blog and brand, Julia now manages Brides Up North’s online content alongside their busy wedding exhibition season, industry events and related commissions. And she’s always, always, got a new project on the go…
