Whilst there’s nothing I like better than getting stuck into blogging a full Real Wedding feature for an individual couple (and you can see that we have covered quite a few – ok, hundreds – of those over the years), but recently I’ve enjoyed putting together our Fabulous Photographer features too.
Each supplier showcase gives an insight into the photographer’s work and personality, but also opens the door on lots of gorgeous wedding days that we might not otherwise share.
It seems a Dotmoxee Photography bride and groom can expect a wedding day full of wide smiles, vibrant colour, special touches, quirky details, and most of all – an amazing set of images at the end of it all.
So let’s meet Emilie & John-Paul, the duo who together make up Dotmoxee Photography, our newest Brides Up North Featured Supplier.
How did you get into wedding photography?
After both studying photography at university, we were introduced through mutual friends one Christmas Eve four years ago in our local pub. The conversation instantly took off as we began sharing our interests and love for photography and film.
After a few meet ups and many ideas later, we began planning our photography business partnership. It wasn’t until we were asked to photograph a friend’s wedding that we caught the wedding bug and haven’t looked back since.
Why wedding photography specifically?
Although we both come from very different photographic backgrounds (fashion, music and advertising) we were both heavily involved with documentary and street photography. Weddings offer a perfect environment for us to tell a story and we love the unpredictability each moment has. Also the fact that each wedding is so different, it’s a new challenge for us to approach with a fresh pair of eyes.
What is your favourite thing about being wedding photographers?
The fact that we have constant excitement where it’ll take us, and all the incredible places we get to photograph. Also meeting our couples, who are all amazing and unique in their own way. We love hearing about their plans and being part of the journey and excitement – a journey that leaves them with our photographs. That’s pretty special in our book.
How do you get couples to relax on the day?
We think it’s important to build a strong relationship with each of our couples before the big day. We’ll arrange a visit to talk about their plans and spend time getting to know them as people. This shines through on the day when we’re capturing photos of them together.
Some couples have found that our engagement shoots have been a great help in relaxing those nerves around the camera, and they actually had fun!
Any advice to any brides who don’t like to have their picture taken?
We work very intimately throughout a wedding so we rarely ask for pictures. For us wedding photography is about capturing honest and natural emotions, not to make you conscious of the camera. By the time we’re taking personal pictures of you both, couples are already use to us documenting the day and you’ll be ready to have a good giggle and enjoy the moment together. We’ve both worked in fashion too, so believe this has been a great advantage as we know the right angles and avoid anything that could look unflattering.
What sort of makeup should a bride wear to look great in her pictures?
Unless you are confident with your own makeup, we always recommend a good makeup artist that suits your style. A make up artist will recommend colours and tones to compliment your skin, bringing out your natural beauty without looking heavy.
Anything to avoid which might look bad in the wedding pictures?
Not really, as we want our couples to enjoy their day to the fullest and find even the quirkiest of objects and locations are a photo opportunity. Any ideas you have we love to hear about and we will try to be as accommodating as much as we can.
Which celebrity wedding would you most like to photograph and why?
If we had to choose it would probably be actors like Zooey Deschanel or Emma Stone, both have a natural quirky beauty about them and they are probably really cool and fun in real life too!
Any really memorable weddings that you have captured?
We have so many memorable weddings, it’s hard to choose! One favourite was photographing a wedding at a 1930s art deco cinema last year. The bride and groom were perfectly 60’s complete with beehive, wiggle dress and mod suit, they both looked amazing! In the cinema, guests were seated to watch an original Laurel and Hardy film and when the curtains were drawn the bride and groom appeared in spotlight on stage for their first dance. It gave us goosebumps and it was such an amazing wedding to be part of.
Any funny stories to share?
At one of our earlier weddings, the bride had secretly planned a gentleman’s room at the reception, complete with a whiskey bar and cigars. It was strictly no females so when it came to a late point in the evening, Emilie decided to sneak in to get some last minute shots and soon got caught in a boisterous crowd and smoke filled room. It took a while to escape!
What sets you apart from other wedding photographers?
Most of our couples enquire about our services because they see us for our style and creativity, which is a great compliment for us. We find that through our natural approach, we’re able to bring the most of out of people’s character to show their natural beauty and laughter.
What can a couple who book you expect on the day?
As a male and female team, we dedicate the full day to a couple, which means we’re there first thing during bride and groom preparations until everyone is up on the dance floor pulling crazy shapes (we won’t be missing out on that!) We offer a natural, relaxed style of photography, and any ideas you have in mind too!
What is included in your "package"?
We keep things really simple and offer a straightforward package for full day wedding photography, with both Emilie & John-Paul to capture the day.

Former lawyer and bride to be Julia founded Brides Up North in 2010 with a chip on her shoulder. Frustrated by the poor Northern presence in glossy bridal magazines and online, she decided to do something about it herself. Astounded by the rapid growth of her blog and brand, Julia now manages Brides Up North’s online content alongside their busy wedding exhibition season, industry events and related commissions. And she’s always, always, got a new project on the go…
