dream venue: healey barn

Julia Smith

Healey Barn (2)

Healey Barn is is a wonderful new wedding venue in the Northumbrian countryside, near the small village of Healey, 6 miles south of Corbridge in the Tyne Valley, made up of a collection of traditional stone farm buildings surrounding a stunning sheltered courtyard.

Today, we’re thrilled to be able to give Brides Up North a private tour and add this gorgeous

relaxed & rustic

setting to our dream venue list.

Healey Barn (6)

healey barn say:

Our main building, the Long Barn, has a spectacular oak “raised cruck” roof, three giant candelabra, wall-mounted candle holders, a fairy-lit ceiling and, of course, a barn-sized stone fireplace. This creates an enchanting and romantic atmosphere, perfect for civil ceremonies or for the arrival point after a church wedding – and this later becomes the dance floor!

Joining the Long Barn is the Dining Room, the old cow byre, with another lovely oak roof, a glass wall looking into the Courtyard on one side, and windows to a fantastic Northumbrian view on the other. The Dining Room is spacious and luxurious for smaller numbers, but will accommodate higher numbers. At the end of the Dining Room is a copper-clad bar, which has a licence until 1am.

The Courtyard is sheltered by the buildings and is perfect for post-ceremony drinks on a mild day, and at night looks magical with fairy-lit trees, fire pits and lanterns. There are 3 giant oak planters with seats around them, 6 umbrella-topped trees, and various benches, cosy sun traps and planted troughs and borders. There is also a shelter with garden furniture; providing a covered outside area and a smokers’ refuge.

The northernmost building, the Store Room, contains smart toilets and also the Bride’s Room, where, before civil ceremonies, the Bride can arrive discreetly and see the registrars before making her entrance into the Long Room.

If it is a relaxed feel a couple want, with incredible food and great service, this is the place for them!

What facilities does it have?

Couples have exclusive use of the barn during their wedding. We have a civil ceremony licence – inside and outside and we have a music and bar licence till 1am. We have a separate ceremony room, dining room and bridal room – so the day will flow naturally and with ease. There is no waiting around during the day for rooms to be set up.

Each couple has a dedicated wedding coordinator throughout the planning process and a front of house on the day helping to run everything smoothly. We also have in-house caterers, and there’s an 8-spit rotisserie visible through a glass screen from the Dining Room, and large mobile BBQ which can be moved in and out of sight as appropriate.

We have stunning, landscaped gardens – ideal for the backdrop of those important wedding photos. There are views overlooking the gorgeous Northumberland countryside too!

What sort of numbers are we talking?

The Long Barn used for ceremonies has a licence for 140 people and the Dining Room has a capacity for 140 guests. Additional evening guests are more than welcome too, and the barn can accommodate up to 200 in total in the evening.

What makes Healey Barn a special wedding venue and sets you apart from others?

Healey Barn offers something very different in the area, and is more relaxed and flexible than most venues. At Healey we try to make each event as personal and unique as possible – allowing you to pick and choose from a selection of decorations, menu choices and we even have a wide selection of recommended, local suppliers should couples need help finding those too!

What sort of bride would be a Healey Barn bride?

We welcome all brides, and will work closely with each bride to help create their perfect day. If a bride is looking for something more rural than urban then this is the venue for them!

How can your staff help to make the planning process easier and the big day amazing?

From the moment a couple visits the barn they will have one of our dedicated wedding coordinators helping them throughout the planning process. Couples are welcome to visit as many times as they like, and we schedule a Planning Meeting for each couple around 6 months before their wedding to talk through their food, drink and decoration choices in more detail.

On the day, our excellent team is managed by our Front of House. This person will welcome the couple when they arrive and will ensure the timings of the day run to schedule. We then have a bar manager who manages the evening until close at 1am.

We have a list of recommended, local suppliers including florists, photographers, bunting makers and cake makers. However, couples can use anyone they would like to and we always suggest that they meet their suppliers at the barn so that their suppliers know the barn and how we work too!

Can guests stay over at your venue?  If not, can you recommend accommodation nearby?

We do not have any accommodation on site, however we have a list of recommended places to stay nearby. One of our favourites is The Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland – and they do the best breakfast!

Tell us about your catering services: what makes them special?

We have in-house caterers that complete the ‘Healey package’ with our inimitable menus. Their formula is “buy the best, cook it simply, serve it generously”. We like to make our food dramatic as well as delicious, so there’s an 8-spit rotisserie visible through a glass screen from the Dining Room, and large mobile BBQ which can be moved in and out of sight as appropriate.

Our food is served ‘feast style’ with all food served in big bowls and on boards to the centre of each table for guests to dig in to. We even have options for a guest at each table to be the ‘carver’ for the table, which creates a fun and informal atmosphere for the guests.

We also host Feast Evenings – giving couples a chance to sample our food and meet other couples getting married at the barn.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price or are there any special packages available?

We work with each couple individually to help them to stick within their budget – letting them choose exactly which food, drink and decorations they would like. rather than confining their choices to a package. To give an idea of food costs – our three course wedding breakfast starts at just £35 per person.

If you visit the availability calendar and click on a date that would suit you; then you can work through an online price calculator to give you a really good idea of how much your wedding or event will be at Healey Barn.

You have an Open Evening and an Open Day coming up at Healey Barn, can you tell us when they are and what they will include?

On Friday 22nd January 2016  we have an Open Evening running from 5pm – 9pm. This is a great opportunity to visit the barn after dark, and see just how stunning it looks by candle light. We will have live music throughout the evening, and serve refreshments and fizz too! The garden will also be lit up, by the flares, fire pits and lanterns. Wander around and meet some of our recommended suppliers including florists, cake bakers, photographers, make up artists and more. Throughout the evening we will be running guided viewing sessions with a Wedding Coordinator, so please get in touch to book in.

Then, on Saturday 23rd January 2016 we are hosting an Open Day from 10am – 3pm. Similar to our last Open Day, we will have viewing slots throughout the day. Don’t miss out on a chance to be shown round the barn by one of our dedicated Wedding Coordinators. Refreshments will be served throughout the day (including fizz!) and guests can wander around the barn and garden at their leisure. We will have more of our recommended, local suppliers showcasing their work at the barn – so it is a great opportunity for couples to find their perfect wedding photographer, videographer, florist, baker and more!

Couples can call us to book a viewing on 01434 400 044 or email us on enquiries@crippshealey.com.

Is there anything else that Brides Up North should know?

Being a new venue, we have a few exciting plans in the pipeline  – just watch this space!
