Today on the blog we’re bringing you further inspiration for the setting of your big day with news of an exciting new wedding venue that will be opening its doors to brides and grooms in North Nottinghamshire next year.
Set to launch in March/April 2017, Hazel Gap Barn will be a new addition to the impressive portfolio of Brides Up North sponsors Cripps Barn Group. Over the years the talented group have transformed derelict barns up and down the country into stunning rural wedding venues with service and food that’is second to none.
Having introduced Cripps Barn Group’s wonderful Healey Barn venue in Northumberland to our readers earlier this year, we are thrilled to be sharing news of the group’s exciting new venture with you today. Always keen to bring you the latest news in weddings first, we’ve put our questions about Hazel Gap Farm direct to the team who will be running it – those on the venue hunt might want to take notes!
Can you give us a brief overview of the Cripps Barn Group and what you offer to wedding couples?
cripps barn say: Since opening Cripps Barn in 1990, Cripps Barn Group have slowly expanded to four venues – developing derelict barns into unique wedding venues. You can take a look at www.crippsbarn.com to browse the different barns.
Each barn is individual, but they share a certain style, and each barn’s team provide a uniquely personal service from booking to the delivery of the day.
Can you tell us a little about the company’s latest venture Hazel Gap Barn?
Cripps Barn Group are now delighted to have found Hazel Gap Barn, an absolute gem of a building on the extraordinary Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire. Hazel Gap Barn is set on its own in lovely countryside, some distance away from the well-visited Welbeck village. The estate have submitted a planning application and they hope to open Hazel Gap Barn for weddings and events from March/April 2017.What is the site currently like and how will it be transformed?
The barn is made up of two traditional red brick farm buildings, the barn itself and the farmhouse, which stand either side of a walled farmyard, destined to become a stunning courtyard with water-features, seating, trees and planters, sheltered from the wind and perfect for post-ceremony drinks. At night, this will become a magical place lit with fairy-lights, flares, fire pits and lanterns, so the evening party can spill outside.
The farmhouse and barn are fronted with two rather unusual and striking towers with wonderful tall arched entrances, providing a dramatic view to greet approaching guests. Between these runs the original farm wall, forming the front of the courtyard, while at the rear a new Oak Room will form the link the barn and farmhouse, containing both a light-filled dining room with spectacular country views across the lawn and into the woods, and a fabulous bar opening into the courtyard.
The barn will be re-roofed with traditionally-crafted oak timbers, and a giant brick fireplace added to make the most perfect ceremony room. After the evening meal, this room will be transformed into the dance floor.
What type of feel will Hazel Gap Barn have to it and what will its interior styling be like?
At Hazel Gap Barn we will keep as much of the original barns as possible, but will add a modern touch where required. The best way to see our style is to look at the other barns we have renovated. If terms of what feel it will have to it – if it is a relaxed feel the couple want, with incredible food and great service, this is the place for them!
Will Hazel Gap Barn be an option for both ceremonies and receptions?
We have already had our civil ceremony license granted, so couples can get married on site if they want. There are also lots of churches local to Hazel Gap, so if couples choose to get married in a church, then they can still use Hazel Gap as the venue for their reception, wedding breakfast and evening party. How many guests will Hazel Gap Barn be able to cater for?
Hazel Gap has one very large room with flagstone floors, a huge open fireplace and wooden beams. We will have to get a little further down the road with our renovation work before we can confirm a civil ceremony license, however based on our experience we anticipate being able to offer a capacity for both the ceremony and dining for up to 150 guests.
For eating the dining room will accommodate up to 150 people on round tables and 120 people on rectangular tables. Alternatively, up to 84 can sit comfortably for a meal in the barn.
There will be room for an additional 150 guests in the evening.
What type of couple will Hazel Gap Barn appeal to?
A wedding party in a smart hotel can be impressive, but some people are looking for something more informal, more romantic, more rural, where children can run around, where you can have fire pits with marshmallows, where it doesn’t matter if a drink is spilled and where the party can move outside in good weather. This is what we will offer at Hazel Gap Barn.
What types of dining and drink options will be available to couples hosting their weddings at the venue?
Hazel Gap Barn will follow the practice that Cripps Barn Group have at all of their other barns; to buy only the best raw materials, regardless of cost (sorry, accountants!) and hand them over to Head Chef to deliver them, precisely cooked and served with the simplicity that such fine ingredients deserve.
The food will be prepared and cooked either on a rotisserie, on a huge barbecue. Cripps Barn Group are known for their whole BBQ’d lambs, sirloin steak bricks or butterflied legs of lamb. Alternatively couples can choose from rotisserie options, including chicken with a cream and tarragon sauce, whole suckling pig with roast apples or even Gressingham duck with wine and blackcurrant sauce. They only use the best ingredients and serve it simply – generally in a feast style on boards and in bowls to the centre of the tables.
Most venues will close around midnight, just when everyone is really enjoying the party. At Hazel Gap Barn your hire period runs until 1am, when the music stops and the bar closes.
In what ways will Hazel Gap Barn stand out from other wedding venues?
It is the first of its kind in the region, and it offers something new, special and memorable!
What is the feedback like from couples that have married at other Cripps Barn’s venues?
Cripps Barn Group has developed four derelict barns into unique wedding venues. We hope that by visiting our website you will see that each barn is totally individual, but that they share a certain style, and, from the testimonial letters, that each barn’s team provide a uniquely personal service from booking to the delivery of the day. There is a testimonial page on each of our venues, with hundreds of comments from our happy couples. We are particularly known for our friendly, helpful staff and our incredible food!
A couple who got married at Cripps Barn recently said:
“The food is out of this world! We have never had wedding food like it before and all of our guests have said it was the best food they have ever had at a wedding and, in fact, it was the best wedding they’ve ever been to. I think that’s all down to the stunning venue, the amazing food and the way it’s run so perfectly. We highly recommend this beautiful barn to anyone thinking of getting married there.”
How will your staff help to make the planning process easier and the big day amazing?
Each couple has the help of a wedding coordinator throughout the run up to their wedding, from the day they visit the barn and book, right up to the delivery of the day. Our online messaging system means that each question or query asked will be responded to as soon as possible – usually within a few minutes!
Our experienced team on the day always work to ensure the day runs smoothly and perfectly and we have a dedicated manager on site until all the guests have left.
We have recommended suppliers at each barn, but couples are welcome to use who they like.
Will guests be able to stay over at Hazel Gap Barn?
There is no accommodation on site, however we are composing a list of recommended accommodation nearby.
Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price and will any specific packages be available?
We do not have packages in place, as we like couples to pick and choose exactly what they want to build up their perfect day, and keep within their budget. However, we do have discounted days in the first few months of opening and our barn hire starts from just £1,000. Our three-course menu options start from £41 per person.
When is Hazel Gap Barn due to open and how can couples see/find out more about the venue?
Hazel Gap Barn is due to open in March/April 2017, however we are running viewings most weekends already for any couples keen to come and see the progress. More information can be found on our website.
