The exquisitely unique venue of Wylam Brewery in Newcastle’s Exhibition Park provides the quirky setting for today’s beautiful wedding which, as it happens, is just a stone’s throw from our bride’s childhood home.

Chelsea and Steven tied the knot in May of this year and were after a venue a little bit unconventional – and Wylam Brewery certainly has this quality in spades. Prettifying the space with gorgeous blooms and a blush, navy and rose gold palette, this is a wedding beaming in all things contemporary, stylish and ever so elegant.

So, grab yourself a tipple and join us as Chelsea reminisces about their special day – from her princess ball gown dress to the handmade sweetie favours and magical photos by the lake.

chelsea says: We got engaged on 21st December 2015. Steven had been planning to recreate our first date but I was really hungry and kept moaning about needing to be fed, so I kind of ruined it. Steven had been acting shifty all day and wouldn’t take his coat off whilst we were out. While we were on the Metro home, his mam and dad kept texting him too (which I now know was to tell him to do it anyway regardless of it not going to plan!). We live near the beach and Steven asked if we could go for a walk to the sea front. I said it was too cold but he kept saying please, so I gave in eventually. We walked down to the sea front and he hugged me tight and started saying some really nice things – and then he got down on one knee with a Fenwick’s bag in one hand (from our Christmas shopping) and the ring in the other and asked me to marry him. I remember laughing so much at the Fenwick’s bag but eventually said yes!

We tied the knot on 29th April 2017. This date had no particular significance, although Steven had started telling people that was the date (with nothing actually arranged) so we had to go with it in the end!

We got married at Wylam Brewery in Exhibition Park. We picked this venue as I had lived in the bungalow situated in the park (where my parents still live) so it was particularly special to get married so close to their house. We also loved the quirkiness of the venue and had been looking for something non-traditional.

We didn’t have a specific theme; we just wanted it to be relaxed and fun. We had a navy, blush pink and rose gold colour scheme – I love these colours and think they work really well together.

I went for a classic ball gown style dress by Ronald Joyce. As soon as I put it on, I fell in love – it was everything I thought I didn’t want but couldn’t help but love. Joanne from House of Bellas Bridal actually picked the dress for me so it wasn’t one of my initial choices. I knew it was the one when my mam cried.

Steven and the grooms all hired their suits from Waltons. They wore tailored three-piece navy blue suits with pink ties and pocket squares.

My bridesmaids wore blush pink, floor length dresses from Monsoon. I loved the jewels around the waistline and they looked so beautiful on all five of my bridesmaids.

Lauren Rourke, who was my makeup artist, was just amazing. Having my makeup done was probably what I was most nervous about but it was perfect; exactly what I pictured myself looking like on my big day. She was professional and so funny to have around on the morning. Carly Charlton was also an absolute star, she was the hairdresser and everyone was so happy with how she did their hair. She was so professional, too – she created my dream hair. I would definitely recommend both, as they made me feel so relaxed and look the best I ever have!

Steven and his best men and groomsman arrived at the venue in a Bentley. As I was getting ready at my parent’s house, I could have walked the 30 seconds it would have taken me, but my dad drove me there in his car, decorated with ribbon.

Bethany Whittaker was our photographer. What I loved most was her ability to catch such natural photographs – I can’t even remember being aware of her photographing us. The photos literally tell the whole story of the day and I will treasure them forever. I would definitely recommend her for relaxed and laid-back couples.

Amy from Muscari Events created my bouquet and she also styled the venue. From the tables to the aisle – it was all perfect and exactly what I wanted and considering I had given Amy such a brief specification of what I had in mind, she somehow created the perfect picture. We loved our illuminated ‘S&C’ lights too, which were provided by Tyne Events.

I created my own favours, I made individual mix up bags for everyone featuring lots of sweets, striped sweet bags, heart stickers and luggage tags and string. This wasn’t very expensive and they also doubled up name place cards as I had them attached to the bag.

Steven’s mum Gail found Bev’s Bakes and Novelty Cakes who made our three-tiered cake. It was gorgeous – we loved it! It consisted of one sponge, one chocolate and one lemon layer. The cake was white with a navy and pink ribbon, decorated with gorgeous tiny pink flowers and a gold sparkly ‘Mr & Mrs Brown’ topper.

For our wedding meal, we wanted something British so we chose steak pie, mash and gravy. Before the main though we had sharing platters of all sorts including scotch eggs, ham terrine, salmon, pickled vegetables etc. Many thought that was the main because there was so much food, so they were shocked when the pies came out. We also had apple pie and custard for dessert.

As entertainment, we had a band, The Daddy O’s, come all the way from Liverpool because they had an awesome Mumford & Sons style sound.

Following our wedding, we would certainly recommend Wylam Brewery to other couples wanting something a little bit different – it was the best venue ever. The team were so good on the day, literally everything went to plan. They were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

Looking back at our day, I would say my favourite part was walking back up the aisle, or should I say dancing, to Now That We Found Love by Heavy D & The Boys. The nerves had subsided and it was time to have fun!

After getting wed, we went on a little minimoon trip to Portrush in Ireland to visit some family friends and wevplan on going to Majorca in August for a sunny break too. Portrush was beautiful and were very lucky as it was gorgeous weather during our visit, so we spent most our time on the beach eating ice cream.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be, don’t stress about the little things, as they really don’t matter. So many couples argue in the lead up to the wedding and it’s really not worth it – trust me, your day is your day and if something goes wrong it doesn’t matter because your friends and family love you and you will be marrying the person you want to be with for the rest of your life and that’s all that really matters.
