Can you tell us a little about Lister Horsfall’s history and its experience in wedding and engagement rings?
gemma says: Lister Horsfall opened his Halifax jewellers back in 1902, a year after Queen Victoria died – and our proudly family-run Yorkshire business is still one of the crown jewels of the county’s top-end shopping experiences over 115 years later.
It’s this experience, passed on through the generations, that brings customers to us – we understand that it’s both an emotional and exciting time when someone is about to propose or get married, so we make sure that couples get the best experience to help them make their day as perfect as possible.
We stock a range of styles to suit all manner of tastes, and at the heart of that is our commitment to providing our customers with exceptional quality. We pride ourselves on enabling our diamond customers to know exactly what they are buying, which is why all our diamonds are certified through the GIA’s Diamond Grading System. We only stock what we consider to be the best in Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight, carrying certified diamonds at the top of the scale, from D to G.
Whether it’s help choosing the right ring, working to a specific budget or even designing a bespoke piece, all our customers receive a personal service that’s second to none.
Where are Lister Horsfall’s showrooms located and can you tell us a little about them and the jewellery stocked?
You can find us in Ilkley and Halifax; both stores have undergone huge refurbishments in recent years. Pre-Christmas, our Ilkley store was completely refurbished, it looks amazing and the feedback from customers has been fantastic.
Our Halifax branch also houses our luxurious Bridal Suite, giving grooms and brides-to-be the perfect place to choose their engagement and wedding rings.

The Halifax showroom has a dedicated engagement & bridal suite, can you tell us about this and the experience it provides for couples?
We have a traditional commitment to a high-quality, personal service, which is why the wedding showroom was a must for us.
Couples can sit down and relax in comfort and privacy, as it’s to the side of the main store floor. Our in-store bar is where you’ll be treated to complimentary drinks whilst you mull over your options for engagement and wedding rings and beyond.
And, if you’re not sure exactly what style you’re looking for, our experienced and down-to-earth team will assist you in finding just the right style for you. It’s a buying experience that treats such a significant life-moment with all the ceremony and care that it deserves.
Can you tell us about the choice of wedding and engagement rings that you stock?
We have an array of exquisite engagement rings from Diamonds by Appointment, true specialists in the field. We are also proud to be one of the few jewellers to stock the UK’s own Brown and Newirth, a wonderful brand that offers customers a wide variety of styles.
Both companies have an absolute commitment to high-quality workmanship, which is why we love working with them.
Do you also offer a bespoke service and, if so, can you tell us about the process of having a ring especially designed and made at Lister Horsfall?
We do, and it’s a very popular service! Customers often bring in images from magazines or drawings they’ve made as initial inspiration for the design. They’ll sit down with Darren, our working jeweller, who will work hand in hand with them to bring their ideas to life. From that, we will produce CAD designs to show what the finished piece will look like and then, once approved, we’ll go ahead and make the ring itself.
It’s a very personal experience that takes about six to eight weeks, and at the end of it you have a truly unique piece of jewellery.
What advice would you offer when shopping for an engagement ring – what are the main elements to take into consideration?
First of all, think about the amount you want to spend – it’s very helpful to know what your budget is as it allows us to start on the same page and find the perfect one for you. We can’t stress the importance of having a budget in mind and sticking to it – we want our customers to enjoy the moment and feel comfortable with what they have spent.
We’d always recommend that you consider the cut, clarity, colour and carat of the diamonds in the ring, and ensure that they have been graded and certified by a reputable diamond grader, such as the GIA.
Also, if you have an idea of any styles you like – from the band to the diamond shape and setting, to including other precious stones – it’s a great starting point as we can help make recommendations and guide you through different options.
When you’re considering styles, think about your lifestyle and the practicality of the ring, as you’re wearing your ring every day. It’s something that you often forget about, but it is really important – the general rule of thumb is that if it will impact on your work then go for something less bulky; the same applies to people who, for example, love outdoor and adventure sports.
Finally, if you’re unsure of your own judgement and buying as a surprise, then it’s worth taking someone you trust along with you (as long as they can keep a secret!).
Similarly, what advice would you offer when shopping for wedding rings?
It’s the same as shopping for an engagement ring, agree your budget and perhaps have some thoughts on the styles you prefer. Over and above that, and as you will be shopping together, you may want to consider whether your bands will be plain or set with diamonds, or whether you’ll want them engraving. Other considerations are the durability of the metal you choose, and how it fits with your lifestyle. Equally, make sure that the wedding band will sit well with your engagement ring and not wear it away.
What metals are proving particularly popular with couples at the moment?
We’ve seen a big rise in popularity of platinum and palladium (a member of the platinum family but not as expensive; it’s been more popular with men). Rose gold has also increased in popularity recently.
Currently, the difference between white gold and platinum pricing is minimal so our advice would be to choose platinum due to its brightness in colour and the fact that it’s more hard wearing.
What would you suggest for couples wanting wedding bands that differ to the norm?
If it’s something that you really want to do, then go for it! Under our bespoke service we make a lot of rings, working with customers to get the design that is perfect for them, and the only thing we say is to remember that you’ll be wearing it every day, for the rest of your life!
In terms of engagement rings, are there any particular settings, designs, stones proving particularly popular at the moment?
We’ve been seeing an increase in diamond set shoulder mounts and fancy cuts such as cushion cuts and emerald cuts lately.
What is the feedback like from couples about Lister Horsfall?
We have a long history with most of our customers, many of whom started out with us when buying an engagement ring! Given our history, we have generations of the same families who shop with us, alongside those who are just starting out on their journey with us.
What they all seem to love is the service we provide, whether an old or new customer. We get to know our customer’s style, preferences and desires, so when they visit or call us and ask for a recommendation, we act very much like a personal shopper.
