Happy Valentine’s Day! We feel a surge of ‘just engaged’ selfies and shiny ring shots filling up our social feeds throughout the day as guys (and some gals!) seize this most romantic day of the year to get down on bended knee.
If you’re freshly engaged yourself (*waves whilst flashing my own bling*) we highly advise getting ahead of the St Valentine’s crowd and getting the all-important venue hunt underway – trust us, when we say the best ones sure do book up fast!
For those of you looking for a picturesque big day setting in Yorkshire, you’ve joined as at a perfect time, as today on the blog we’re catching up with the lovely team at our stunning Sponsor venue and Luxury Wedding Show partner Denton Hall. If you’ve not had this fabulous venue on your must-visit radar before, that’s because it’s something of a hidden gem, nestled in the Yorkshire Dales just outside of the historic spa town of Ilkley – and its team are at the ready to tell you all about its wonderful wedding offering…
Can you tell us a little about the history of Denton Hall and describe the look and feel of the venue?
denton hall say: The Hall was designed by famous architect John Carr and built in 1778. Today the beautiful building provides a venue that is brimming with timeless elegance and situated in a luxurious rural setting. Being nestled in 2,500 acres with stunning views across to the Ilkley moor, we really are spoilt with some of the best views in Yorkshire. The building has been beautifully restored to mirror its original style and retain its unique character. From the stunning spiral stair case to crystal chandeliers, there are so many areas just perfect for photographs and for friends and family to relax in.
Tell us about the ceremony and reception areas at Denton Hall…
With three stunning rooms within the hall licensed for civil ceremonies and the local church just a stone’s throw away in the village of Denton, getting married here could not be easier. Typically, we use the front terrace of the Hall, which has sweeping views across to the Ilkley moor for your drinks reception – as well as our newly refurbished reception area and bar, before moving through into the elegant dining room. After dinner, its back to the bar and reception area to dance the night away until the small hours with our late licence. We can host up to 100 guests for the day reception and then 160 for the evening.
What makes Denton Hall a special wedding venue and sets it apart from others?
We like to think that what we offer here at Denton is truly a magical experience, we like to get to know our couples and with the exclusive use for the whole weekend, you really do become part of the Denton family. You are our only guests and we get to look after you and your loved ones from the moment you all arrive on Friday until you all depart on Sunday.
Each and every wedding is as individual and different as the couple; so with this in mind we don’t have set packages which couples adhere to. Instead each and every couple sit down with us and we create a bespoke day tailored exactly as they want it – from the reception drinks all the way through the day to evening food.
What sort of bride would be a Denton Hall bride?
Any bride can be a Denton bride, whatever their vision. With the bespoke tailored packages we can caterer for all wants and desires.
How can your staff help to make the planning process easier and the big day amazing?
We like to try and make the planning process as easy as possible for our couples by offering our guidance and expertise on; from suppliers and styling, to traditions and seasonal food/drink. We are always on hand to answer questions and queries – whether that’s on the phone, over email, face to face, or even text.
On the big day one of the team is here from the moment the first guest arrives on Friday afternoon until check out on Sunday. Ourselves and the catering managers from Box Tree Events always ensure that the bridal party are aware of who we are and that they can come to us with anything they need, plus we are on hand for you both all day too.
Can you tell us about the accommodation at the venue?
Our couples can make a full weekend out of the exclusive use of the hall, we have 24 guest bedrooms plus our luxury bridal suite and lodge suites. We don’t book our rooms out to anyone other than the wedding party and get the bride and groom to allocate the bedrooms – that way you can make sure that those who definitely need a room have one.
Tell us about your catering services and what makes them special?
One thing we are immensely proud of here at Denton is our catering. We have worked exclusively with the amazing and fabulous team at Box Tree Events for the past seven years, who will delight and excite couples with their wonderful wedding menus and choices.
What is the feedback like from couples about Denton Hall?
One of the bets parts of the wedding weekend for us is seeing just how happy our couples are. The joy just beams out of their faces. We often get feedback which thanks us for being part of the whole journey, from the first show around until check out on the Sunday morning. Working with Box Tree Events also ensures the food is just sensational. There are always comments from our couples and their friends and family on just how delicious the entire wedding breakfast was.

Lartington Hall has quickly become one of the most sought after country house wedding destinations in the North of England. Having been lovingly restored, the Grade II listed building set amongst 78 acres of romantic parkland is now equally stunning on the outside as within; housing an opulent collection of ceremony and reception rooms, luxurious, boutique style accommodation and its very own private chapel.
The quality of the restoration and attention to detail is nothing short of spectacular; from reclaimed venetian marble floors and regency antiques, to Nina Campbell furnishings and state-of-the-art Bose sound systems, the old and new have been blended together seamlessly.
For weddings, the impressive country house, which combines the glamour of The Great Gatsby with the grandeur of Downton Abbey, becomes couples’ very own rural retreat for their special day, with exclusive use of the entire building for just them and their chosen guests. Helping to bring the perfect package together, a wedding specialist, stylist and, of course, a butler, will be on hand to assist brides and grooms with their every wish.

It’s holiday season here on the blog, and as the editorial team take a short break, we’ll be leaving you with a reduced blogging schedule so that you still get your daily dose of wedding lovely. Usual service will recommence on Monday 3rd July 2017 but in the meantime watch out for recaps of some of our favourite Real Weddings from the first half of the year so far.
Drop in every day for the very prettiest, most unique wedding inspiration and – if you are a Brides Up North bride – to see if your real wedding was one of our top picks.
From the venue’s name, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this is an overseas wedding, but in fact the stunning French inspired venue can be found in rural Northumberland.
Cheerleaders Rachelle and Liam fell whole-heartedly in love with its unique styling and charm, planning a big day with French shabby chic touches to complement their surroundings.
So, let’s get straight into the pretty. Ready? Ok!
With images by Sean Elliott Photography
rachelle says: We got engaged in Bangkok, Thailand, in November 2013, while we attended the seventh World Cheerleading Championships, in which we both were competing together as part of Team UK.
We set the date for 30th July 2016 – the beginning of the school holidays as Liam is a teacher and we wanted to make sure we had time to fit in a good honeymoon before he went back to work.
Our ceremony took place at St. Peters Church, Harton, South Shields at 12pm as it had sentimental value to Liam. We then held our reception in Le Petit Chateau, Otterburn. We originally booked a different reception venue when we first got engaged but when we discovered the plans for Le Petit Chateau, we fell in love and decided to lose our previous deposits and change to Le Petit Chateau, despite never actually seeing the venue until a month before our wedding. After seeing the venue, it looked a million times better than what we’d expected from the plans and knew we had made the right decision to change our wedding
We didn’t have a theme as such but it was almost aimed towards French shabby chic. We incorporated old books and watering cans into our centrepieces. Our table plan was a mannequin with French inspired shabby chic labels pinned to it containing the table plan to incorporate the French fashion scene. We added a cheerleading bow to this as that was how we met and how we’d got engaged. We picked our favourite looks from Pinterest and the shabby chic appealed to us the most. When we found our new venue, we tailored it more to suit the style and it worked perfectly.
We chose a coral colour scheme, as it was a very summery colour that we thought would brighten the photos. When we first saw the venue, we were excited to see that the same colour was used on the external walls of the Belle Epoque!
I chose my dress – an ivory Mori Lee gown – from The Bridal Factory Outlet, and had a wonderful shopping experience there. My dress was a full A-line dress with a slight sweetheart neckline. The bodice was covered in a heavy lace with pearls and crystals. It had a lovely crystal belt that tied into a lovely flowing tulle bow at the back. The skirt kicked out at the waist into layers of tulle. I picked the dress to show off my waist and as a cheerleader, I wanted sparkle but I didn’t want to go too overboard.
I also picked a shorter knee length dress for the evening, which was a white Sherri Hill dress that had a bodice full of pearls and a full tulle skirt with lace detail at the bottom.
Liam wore a grey three-piece suit from Slaters with a white shirt and black Ted Baker shoes also from Slaters, and a coral and ivory paisley silk tie and pocket square that I’d found on Pinterest and sourced from Amazon. They matched the colour scheme perfectly and were such much nicer than a block colour.
I won my bridesmaids dresses from Brides Dream in Newcastle, from a wedding show in 2014 and picked them from a wide range at their store in summer 2015. I picked a coral floor-length gown with an illusion sweetheart neckline. The top of the dress was a coral mesh with a lovely delicate lace detail on the shoulders. The dress also had an illusion low back, that accented my wedding dress.
I had a man of honour in my bridal party too, my best friend Ben Pardey, who helped my maid of honour, Olga Crehan. They were my two best friends from university and I couldn’t have got married without them both by my side with a main role in the wedding.

Here at Brides Up North HQ we’re always super keen to learn more about the fabulous wedding venues available in this half of the country, so that we can spread the word to you, our lovely readers.
While some we follow with interest online, others we’re fortunate to visit in person, allowing us to view and experience their wonderful facilities and hospitality first hand. Our most recent travels saw us heading west, to the impressive Carden Park Hotel, where we were invited for a glorious one-night getaway.
Nested in 1,000 acres of Cheshire countryside, the sizable estate boasts an award-winning hotel, AA Rosette restaurant, championship golf courses, adventure activities and spa. Its spacious function suites and grounds mean it’s also a popular wedding venue, offering a varied choice of settings and packages for a couple’s special day.
Upon arriving for our stay, we were given a tour of the facilities and celebration spaces by the hotel’s friendly wedding planner, Maddie, where the full scope of Carden Park’s offering came to light. Not only can this hotel cater for the big day itself, but it’s an ideal retreat for pre-wedding pampering, a girly or action-packed hen do and a relaxing minimoon.
In terms of accommodation, the hotel offers a wide choice of options; from twin, double and family rooms, up to its spacious luxury suites, with special upgrade extras including a fully stocked complimentary minibar, chocolates, sparkling wine and ESPA toiletries.
Wedding wise, Carden can cater for all sizes and offers the choice of its elegant and contemporary Carden Suite, rustic-style Shooting Suite and open-air Wedding Pavilion, through its ‘Eternity’ and ‘Fairytale’ packages.
Elsewhere in the hotel there is much more to be explored. We began our break with an afternoon tea in the comfortable lounge area before taking the energy levels up a notch with some of the fun outdoor activities available on site. From laser clay shooting, archery and mountain biking to an aerial zip-wiring course, Carden is a playground for all ages.
We were treated to an off-roading 4×4 experience with JEEP enthusiast and instructor Terry, who navigated us through the surrounding woodland, giving us a tour of the expansive estate whilst sliding around the challenging course. Next up, with the help of instructor Ryan, we tried our hand (and feet) at segwaying, which is a little trickier than it looks, but heaps of fun.
Back at the hotel it was time to wind things down again, and so after a quick shower and change, we settled in the bar with a bottle of sauvignon, ahead of our three-course meal in Redmond’s Restaurant. Changing its menu regularly to suit the season and fresh produce available, we were spoiled for choice when it came to making our starter, main and dessert selections but went with the staff recommendations (they certainly know their stuff!) A salmon-starter, chicken-main and panna-cotta-dessert later, it was evident that the standard of food was equal to the level of service – first class!
We retired for the evening feeling immensely satisfied and settled into our king-size beds for a peaceful night’s sleep.

This morning’s real wedding takes place at Saltmarshe Hall in Yorkshire, a stunning venue at which we host our Luxury Wedding Shows, so if you like what you see, pencil in Sunday 9th April to view this beautiful building for yourselves during our next event.
But for now, let’s enjoy reliving the gorgeous big day of Mark and Nicola, which featured a pretty pink, lavender and antique cream colour scheme, elegant shabby chic touches and incredibly dreamy floral arrangements.

nicola says: Mark proposed to me at our favourite restaurant, Winteringham Fields, when I was eight months pregnant. It’s a fine dining restaurant, where he organised a private room and we stayed in a suite. The ring came out under a cloche during a nine-course tasting menu, which was amazing food. Mark got on one knee and proposed, I said yes but the kitchen staff who were watching on a CCTV camera were unsure whether I had, and dare not come back in the room, which was quite funny.
We married on the 24th June 2016. We chose the date as it we wanted to marry early summer and hoped for some nice weather, which we got!
Our venue was an amazing privately-owned stately Georgian home called Saltmarshe Hall in East Yorkshire. It is quite a new venue; the family have just finished renovating it and actually live there during the week. We chose the venue as the grounds and house were amazing and we literally fell in love with it and didn’t look anywhere else.
We were married by a registrar but then the vicar from our local village, who is a family friend, gave us a religious blessing in the gardens after we formally married, which was nice.
We didn’t have a specific theme for the wedding, we just went for a classic and traditional style with our own personal touches. Our colour scheme was soft shades of pink/lavender and antique cream.
My wedding dress was from It’s Bliss Bridal & Prom Wear in Doncaster. The design was a classic style with corset bodice, organza skirt with pearl and crystal detailing, which I wore with a full-length veil.
