tinsel time. julia’s christmas picks

Julia's Christmas Picks

There’s absolutely no doubt about it that the big day is drawing near – cue an afternoon spent dashing round the shops like a headless chicken, toddler in tow, as I realised that today was my only possible shopping day till the big man comes down the chimney.

(Sorry about the late feature, and all that, but at least there’ll be presents under the tree!)

My Christmas shopping’s done (albeit hastily), but here’s what would be on my wish list for the 25th, if anyone out there’s paying any attention by this stage…

Or have I lost you all to a reality TV and mulled wine blur?

ruby & ed ballerina slippers, £39

Soft, snuggly and stylish, these ballerina slippers come in the prettiest berry shades, perfect for cosy Christmas evenings in.  Plus they do a tiny pair, just right for my little mini me!

charlotte tilbury Supermodel Body, £45

Her make up line is sensational, so I’m hoping that her Supermodel Body cream will do what it says on the tin.  After skipping the gym in favour of more screen time, let’s hope that Charlotte’s promise of a “slimmer shimmer” comes to fruition.

jimmy choo Rebel cross body bag, £795

I’m dreaming of a Jimmy Christmas, and this little number works for day or night. I’d chose the silver for maximum sparkle.

nails inc nail polish in Porchester Square, £14

My staple colour, and in need of a restock.  This pale grey is endlessly flattering and goes with almost any outfit (including a wedding gown). I pray this stuff is never discontinued.

topshop sequin christmas tree sweater, £46

If you’re going to join the Christmas jumper madness, then why not do it in style?  If you’re gong to join ‘em, you may as well beat ‘em. In sequins.

alex monroe teeny tiny diamond ring, £265

Fragile, different and contains diamonds. I’d love my digits to be adorned with this little number.

kurt geiger london Bond heels in pink, £270

Strong, sexy and in my very favourite colour.  I’d never take them off.

ted bakersequinned pencil skirt, £139

Perfect for a glitzy night on the tiles with the girls, or dressed down for a dinner date with the other half. This skirt has drama and sass, but it’s got plenty of class too.

clarisonic Aria in gold, £155

I dream of the perfect complexion, and apparently this little gadget is going to deliver.  A must for ladies getting aisle ready and apparently for the rest of us too. Sign me up.

labrador puppy, POA

Do I even need to explain?

tinsel time. rachel’s christmas picks

December 16th, 2014 | Rachel Parry

Rachel's Christmas List

Don’t know about you, but here at Brides Up North HQ, we think we’ve been pretty damn good this year, so we’re emailing St Nick with our Christmas wish-lists.  First up, it’s our lovely Rachel, who’s sticking to form with a stocking full of girly, glittery loveliness.

If you haven’t missed the elf post, you might want to leave this browser window open where your other half can see it…

urban decay Naked eye shadow palette, £37

Shimmery, sultry and sexy, Urban Decay’s Naked palette is loaded with 12 bronze-hued shadows in a stunning range of textures, including matte, satin and sparkle. I’m putting this on my Christmas list as an essential to see me through the party season and beyond. Brides searching for beautiful shadows that won’t budge during their moment in the limelight need look no further!

viktor & rolf Flowerbomb eau de parfum 30ml, £49.50

Every lady wants a new sweet scent for Christmas. My signature that I find it difficult to stray from is Vera Wang Princess, but I do love a quick spritz of Flowerbomb whenever I find myself in the fragrance aisle. I’d highly recommend this to brides-to-be in search of a romantic scent for their big day.

glitzy secrets earrings, £46

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend – but I doubt anyone buying for me this year could cover the cost of such an item. These sparklers from Glitzy Secrets are a good budget backup though. Great for dressing up the Little Black Dress over the festive period, this pair would definitely make my wish list. Also – a great choice for brides-to-be looking to add some opulent accessories to their wedding day attire.

michael kors Selma Saffiano leather bag, £302

In the words of Mariah ‘All I want for Christmas is you’. My ultimate dream pressie would have to be a Michael Kors bag. I’m head over heels for the solid structure of Selma, especially in this gorgeous shade of grey.

office shoes, £65

As I pointed out in a previous post, the festive season is a perfect time to pick up a new pair of fierce heels. These bobby dazzlers would most definitely put a smile on my face on Christmas morning. A classic court but with a whole load of in-your-face attitude! Also a stunning choice of fancy footwear for brides wanting to release their inner Cinderella, just try not to lose one!

olivia burton watch, £75

This item has been on my wish list since the beginning of the year when I first spotted Olivia’s dreamy designs on Instagram. There is a stunning range to choose from with varying straps, faces and dials. I was initially drawn to the baby blue and mint designs, but now I’m hoping Father Christmas brings me Olivia’s big dial design in gold, with classic tan strap.

paperchase tea light holders, £6

Men don’t quite understand females’ fascination with Paperchase – to them its bits of card and paper but to us it’s a whole shop of prettiness! I adore these cute tea light holders which have a Christmassy appearance but can be kept out all year round. Also, a fab décor idea for winter weddings, a few of these dotted in the middle of the table with some festive foliage would certainly set the right ambience.

reiss Lolly metallic bandeau dress, £195

Every girl needs a killer dress for the festive season and this sparkling number from Reiss would be my number one choice to find under the Christmas tree. Figure-hugging, flattering and fabulous, oh so sweet Lolly has it all – a perfect New Year’s Eve party dress, if ever I did see one!

marks & spencer Rosie for Autograph luxurious satin pyjamas, £35

A Christmas classic for every girl –PJs. This set by the stunning Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for Marks & Sparks offers both comfort and class. Now if only I could request her figure from Santa Claus too.

ted baker Bowlee leather gloves, £75

As temperatures continue to plunge, lovely leather gloves are required to keep ones manicured hands protected from the wintry weather. And they don’t come much prettier than Ted Baker’s Bowlee design in playful blush pink finished with a cute metallic bow.

I seriously hope I made Santa’s nice list this year!

halloween is here.

Is it just me, or did things suddenly get a little freaky around here?

I can’t resist a bit of Halloween mischief, especially when it’s executed as stylishly (and as eerily) as this gothic bridal shoot by Abi of Wooden Hill Images and her clever team.

Look out, she’s behind you…

Be honest, who checked?

Abi says: With a background in theatre and a passion for literature and transforming it into the visual, I wanted to be able to celebrate the change of season and create a Halloween ‘bride’.

My team researched the idea of a gothic bride and took influences from novels, listened to music and found a great location next to Lake Gormire at the bottom of Sutton Bank near Thirsk.

Brides and Belles supplied a wonderful dress from Victoria Kay Gowns which suited the brief and then we found the black velvet coat we wanted from gothic clothes supplier The Dark Angel.

We met on a day in October and our model Simona was transformed by Deborah from Love Hair and Beauty, who never fails but to understand what we ty to achieve and knows exactly how to create it.

Jane from Wedding and Events Floral Design had created wonderful bouquets and a head dress, collected fabrics and rabbit skulls, skilfully made a bustle for the back of the coat and finished off the detailing to the top hat.

It was a walk into the woods, with bags, boxes, a dog, wellies, umbrellas, smoke bombs and some cameras… and in a race against weather, we created!

It has to be noted that Bill the greyhound, despite shaking with nerves was a total professional.

When There’s Somethin’ Strange, In Your Neighbourhood…

October 31st, 2013 | Julia Braime

This is definitely one for the ghostbusters.

© jamie penfold photography 2013 - www.memoriesandemotions.co.uk

I’ve seen the piles of pumpkins outside the supermarket.  Read the tabloid spoofs.  Spooked myself silly reading “The Orphan Choir” by Sophie Hannah (just don’t). Bought my baby a pumpkin outfit.  Dressed as a skeleton for #weddinghourlive…

There was no way I wasn’t going to share something frightful to celebrate the spirit of the season (see what I did there?) Ladies and gents, beware the Bridezillas this Halloween night…

Styled by Donna Hartley Redfern of North East Wedding Planner and images by Brides Up North Featured Supplier Jamie Penfold Photography, let me make this clear:  I do not suggest that you use this shoot as wedding inspiration!

Just horrible.  But so very Halloween

Donna says:  This week the wedding industry decided to take advantage of old hallows eve and show the fun side of those who work within the wedding industry.  The new folly at Woodhill Hall in Otterburn gave Jamie and I a wacky idea. So after a few phones calls lots of industry specialists offered their services to help us get spooky!

© jamie penfold photography 2013 - www.memoriesandemotions.co.uk

Corrinne, the quirky owner of Woodhill Hall loves seeing the hall re-created with each wedding, so leapt at the opportunity to show the dark side of the stunning wedding venue to show future grooms what happens if you don’t give your bride what she wants on her wedding day!

The team transformed models into bride zombies. The brides all received a make under by the unbelievably talented team including KF Make up and Amanda Williamson hair stylist, complete with wedding dresses by House of Mooshki.

Wedding Blog Exclusive! An Interview With Britain’s Worst Bride: We Chat To Georgina

July 19th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

.

“My biggest wish for married life is to never have to work again – it’s ghastly!”

.

.

I have a treat for you today!  Today we chat to the lady behind the wedding video blog that went viral, Anna Morris.  Anna’s creation Georgina has been dubbed Britain’s Worst Bride by the World’s media, including the Huffington Post.

.

.

.

.

I’ve been featuring “Georgina’s Wedding Blogs” on these pages every Friday – a hilariously tongue in cheek look at what happens when wedding planning power is placed in the wrong hands.

.

In this exclusive interview, granted only to Brides Up North, let’s chat to Georgina about her wedding plans…

.

.

Georgina's Wedding Blog by Anna Morris Comedy

.

.

Where and when did you get engaged?  Was it a surprise?

.

Well it wasn’t a surprise because it would have been foolish of Simon not to at some point so it was just a matter of where and when really.

.

Simon proposed to me while we were at the bedside of his dying great grandmother, Dorothea. It was terribly romantic – I’d had my eye on her family heirloom of a ring from the first moment I’d laid eyes on it! It was far too big of course because she’d withered away quite a lot. It was her dying wish to see Simon engaged, although she wasn’t conscious when he did it. It was so thoughtful of him – but that’s my Simon – terribly thoughtful! The whole family ran in and the children jumped on the 17th century four poster! It was a wonderful moment, even the doctor was in tears!

.

.

When and where are you planning to get married?

.

I’m planning on getting married at a secret location over the summer (although due to some recent unfortunate errors with various suppliers, this may be pushed back). I don’t want to tell you the location in case generic members of the public try and come in or take pictures. I am also negotiating a deal with Hello and Hiyah! Magazines so the details remain a great secret!

.

All I can tell you is that the venue is very grand and historical, although I was disappointed it didn’t have a moat, so I’m having one built.

.

.

Georgina's Wedding Blog by Anna Morris Comedy

.

.

Where and when did you first meet?

.

Simon and I met at work in the city many years ago. We bonded at a work away day when we went clay pigeon shooting and our team won. Simon had a great aim, and he when it rained he leant me his Barbour jacket which I thought was very sweet.

.

.

Where did you go on your first date? Was it true love right from the start?

.

Our first date was very normal I suppose. We went to Prince Harry’s birthday party, after dining at Annabels. Yes I think I realised it was something like love or relief when his driver picked us up at the end of the night.

.

.

When did you know that he was the one?

.

When I first visited his family estate and his Mother gave us our own set of keys to the Barbados house.

.

.

Georgina's Wedding Blog by Anna Morris Comedy

.

.

What do you love most about each other?

.

I’d say Simon loves my hair the most – no extensions, it’s all real and very thick. My family have a history of very thick, solid hair and Simon loves it when I wear it down. He also often tells me he loves my ‘english rose’ skin, and my taste in soft furnishings.

.

What do love most about Simon? I love how passive he is.

.

.

What are his/ hers most annoying little habits?

.

Simon is often late or forgets things! Like looking at wedding venues – I had 6 booked in per week through the spring and he forgot almost every single one!

.

I don’t have any annoying habits.

.

.

Georgina's Wedding Blog by Anna Morris Comedy

.

.

What is your biggest wish for married life?

.

To never have to work again – it’s ghastly.

.

.

Tell us more about your wedding plans?

.

The colour scheme is ‘insipid gold’ – I don’t think you can go wrong with that. The staff will be spray painted gold, as well as 100 doves which we’ll release after dinner.

.

.

What about your wedding dress and accessories? What have you chosen? What will your bridesmaids wear?

.

Well originally the wedding dress was supposed to be layered with gold leaf with a corset made out of gold, but we realised it as too heavy and may have caused my ribs to break, so I’m still looking! I have a shortlist of 23 now.

.

I’m still auditioning for bridesmaids, but I’ll probably make them wear grey or beige – something weak and insignificant.

.

.

Georgina's Wedding Blog by Anna Morris Comedy

.

.

What about the details?

.

We’re going for a giant ice sculpture of me as the centre-piece of the foyer, Katherine Jenkins will be singing ‘You’re Beautiful’ by James Blunt as I walk down the aisle, favours will be a framed photo of Simon and I, and an iPad.

.

.

Where are you planning on going on honeymoon?

.

Simon and I will be going on separate honeymoons due to his work and my charity commitments. He’ll be going to Thailand, and I’ll be going to the Po Po Luxury Spa resort in the Maldives.

.

.

Why did you start your wedding blog? Are you enjoying making your films?

.

I started the wedding blogs because I thought other Brides could perhaps benefit from my tips, and ideas. I also thought it would be a bit of escapism for generic members of the public who seem to enjoy ‘reality shows’. I also think I’m very photogenic and although I could have been a very successful model or actress, I chose to concentrate of more serious pursuits, so this is a bit of fun!

.

.

Georgina's Wedding Blog by Anna Morris Comedy

.

.

What has the public response been like?

.

Wonderful, apart from a few jealous people who have accused me of being self-obsessed or spoilt. It’s not my fault they can’t afford a half a million pound wedding!

.

.

Now, let’s meet the lady behind Britain’s Worst Bride, comedian Anna Morris.

.

Anna says: I had wanted to create a universally recognisable character for a long time. Most of my previous characters had been a bit surreal. Last year, I overheard a conversation in a café of someone very posh having a go at the waiter, in a very passive aggressive way.  The character of Georgina just popped into my head, and she wouldn’t leave me alone. I wanted to see how she’d react at a wedding, if she had a speech to make and if everything had gone wrong… and it just fell out onto the page! Then I started performing it at gigs and it god a good reaction, and I really enjoyed it. I refer to the audience members individually and thank them for their ‘help’ as if they are guests at a wedding.

.

I then decided to put together a 1 hour show featuring Georgina, and 5 other brand new characters. The rest of them are quite different to her, and all compliment each other very well. It’s a very fun, varied show.

.

Anna’s show, Dolly Mixture, is previewing in London on 30th/31st July, 8pm at the Camden Fringe, and then it will be on at the Edinburgh Festival, 4-25th August at the Voodoo Rooms, West Register Street at 3.55pm.

.

Camden tickets can be brought here, and Edinburgh is free – just turn up!

Lady Britannia! A Fun Olympics Bridal Fashion Shoot

July 1st, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Olympics Brides by K&I Imaging

.

.

So we crashed out of the footy, but Andy Murray is doing pretty well at Wimbledon, right?  Now I like a bit of national pride, but my husband has pretty much been glued to the box for weeks on end.  Are your partners the same, or are you right there with them?

.

Sneaky strawberry and cream opportunities aside, the peace and quiet is rather nice, but I was looking forward to seeing some more of him shortly.  But, alas, it’s not to be.  I’d forgotten about the big one

.

.

Olympics Brides by K&I Imaging

.

.

Because Euro 2012 is small fry compared to what’s right around the corner: the Olympics!

.

It’s been a big year for Britain already what with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations (you can catch up on some of the fabulous styled shoots I featured that weekend here, here, here, here, here, here and here), and I’ve decided that if I can’t beat him, I may as well join him!

.

We don’t have tickets for any events, so I’ll be grabbing the popcorn, breaking out the bunting and singing for Team GB.  You know what?  I can’t wait.

.

.

Olympics Brides by K&I Imaging

.

.

Today, in this fun shoot sent to me by Brides Up North Featured Supplier Fable & Promise and Kerry Baker Make Up Artist, the wedding industry get in on the action too.  What do you think girls?  Should brides stick to dashing up the aisle? Would you rock a patriotic wedding look?  Or is that best left to Sporty Spice?

.

Let’s fly the flag!

.

.

Olympics Brides by K&I Imaging

.

.

Kerry Baker, the make up artist on the shoot and coordinator says: I wanted to do a red, white and blue themed shoot but wanted to steer away from the sugar coated Jubilee style. So, with the Olympics and Team GB in mind, I decided on a very strong, gritty Lady Britannia style sports shoot and set about putting together my own elite team of professionals to help me do it. As a make-up artist specialising in weddings, I love to experiment and do something outside of the box occasionally so have started styling shoots to allow me to indulge in my creativity! I started with Union Jack lip tattoos and it grew from there. I kept the make up minimal using, just simple strokes of eye-liner and false lashes completed the look to keep the focus on the dramatic lips.

.

.

Olympics Brides by K&I Imaging

.

.

Having met the lovely Charlotte from Fable & Promise, I knew with her talent for designing unique creations she would be the perfect partner on the project. Together we chose the dresses to feature in the shoot, and after chatting over ideas Charlotte "picked up the baton" (sorry, couldn’t resist) and came up with some wonderful designs which were matched exactly with the look I was going for. In fact, when she unveiled them on the day of the shoot I think I may have squealed I was so happy with them! Oh and the clever lady also made the headpieces too!

.

.

Olympics Brides by K&I Imaging

.

.

So after sorting out the dresses and venue (UCLAN Sports arena, Preston) I asked a friend and fantastic hair stylist Carly Ryan to do the models hair. I asked Carly for a sporty but edgy fashion look, and she did a really fantastic job.

.

Lastly I invited K&I Imaging duo Karen and Ian to take the photographs for the shoot. I had a lot of ideas on poses for the models (including replication of the infamous tennis girl black and white image from the 80s) which they took on board and really made the whole project come alive, despite the rain and the cold conditions!

And of course I have to mention the models, Stacey, Su, Lynn and Lauren. All friends of mine who have modelling experience who, along with Carly, Charlotte Karen and Ian all gave up their time to be involved in the project.

.

Don’t miss Fable & Promise’s one day sample sale this coming weekend!  Charlotte says: Starting with a catwalk show to see the dresses in all their glory, brides are then able to try the dresses on and meet other wedding industry specialists to help plan other aspects of their day.
