Super Cool Canvas! Supplier Showcase: TotallyTipi

January 22nd, 2013 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

Ooh, I do like an evening spent under canvas.  But not camping (are you mad?) or even glamping (should ever two words not be mashed together glamour and camping are those words!), but a party under canvas in a Scandinavian tipi tent is another thing entirely.  It’s thoroughly cool for a start.

.

Gleaming dance floors, fur throws, open fires, fabulous decor… and not a camping stove in site.  This is the life!

.

This afternoon we talk to the lovely Laura and Jay or Brides Up North Featured Supplier TotallyTipi about how you can make your wedding celebration stand out from the crowd.  With images by John Steel Photography and LMX Creative.

.

.

When did TotallyTipi begin and why?

.

TotallyTipi Ltd was born in 2011 having been at a wedding in a two-tipi setup two years earlier. We fell in love with them immediately and thought more people should benefit from their beauty. Some research showed there was just one company in the region so we felt there was space in the market for us to set up – and here we are! Founders Jay and Laura are both from creative backgrounds, Jay in media and events and Laura in design.

Tell Brides Up North about the service that you offer?

.

TotallyTipi’s focus is on providing giant tipi ‘kata’ tents for weddings and events. But that’s not all. Everyone has their own personal idea of what makes a perfect event and we like to help make it a one-off in whatever way we can. This can be help in choosing the right location or connecting a client with others in the wedding industry who can, for instance, theme and dress the tents or offer a load of finishing touches for hire so they can explore their creative side and dress the tents themselves.

.

Generally speaking we get two ‘types’ of client. Those who love the tents and work everything out around the tents (such as the venue) and those who have their venue but are undecided on whether to hire teepees or a marquee.

.

.

Tell Brides Up North about your teepees?

.

Warming, cosy, rustic or formal, the teepees are very adaptable and so beautiful that they can look stunning even with minimal decor. Having a wedding or reception inside a tipi will ensure people remember it for a long time.

.

Inside a tipi there is a feeling of fusing the natural world outside, with stylish and comfortable surroundings inside, at a location that could be right in your back yard (literally!) or in the middle of sweeping countryside.

Multiple teepees are connected using special methods to make event spaces as small or large as a client dictates. Each one is just over 10m in diameter and is supported by nine solid wooden poles measuring over eight metres in length! The trees used for the tipi poles are specially grown in Sweden for strength and flexibility and are typically 100 years old when felled- very strong!

.

The fabric is waterproof yet breathable so you don’t get condensation drips and it traps in a surprising amount of heat!

.

This type of tipi is also describes as a ‘Giant Hat’ as all of the sides can be propped up so one tipi on its own looks just like a witches hat. This technique of having the sides raised really can bring the outside in – particularly wonderful on a warm summer’s eve…

.

Furthermore, one of the unique aspects of a tipi is the ability to have a real indoor fire thanks to its conical design. It provides heat as well as a warming atmosphere and smoke flaps at the tip of the tipi act as the chimney .

What sets TotallyTipi apart from your competition?

.

TotallyTipi are a small, friendly, experienced company based in South Yorkshire, run by partners (in business and life!) Jay and Laura. Being a small company we take pride in every detail of our events and offer a very personal touch to our brides and grooms. Our team has experience of several hundred tipi set-ups so our couples can be assured of our quality.

.

Because we are dedicated to creating perfect events, we manage our workload to ensure that each customer gets enough of our time so every event is planned and delivered with minimum hassle and to the highest standards of customer service.

.

We are also soon unveil our beautiful bespoke TotallyTipi wooden tables and dance floor for 2013. These will be very unique and not like anything else available to hire. We are very excited about these! Watch this space.

.

With TotallyTipi, what you see is what you get. There are no hidden extras – and we give our couples full scope to make an event their own or provide the complete arrive-and-it’s-all-done-for-you service.

Are teepees good for winter as well as summer weddings?

.

This is a question we are often asked and the answer is yes!

.

The giant tipi design is inspired by the traditional teepees lived in by the Sami people of Lapland – so they’re built to withstand the weather and contain warmth.  There is a lot of skill involved in joining the teepees so that they are fully weather-proof. This is where our team’s vast experience is invaluable. Our Operations Director brings with him the wealth of knowledge gained from several hundred tipi and marquee set-ups so we are confident that we can handle whatever the weather throws at us!

.

Plus there’s our secret weapon – the indirect space heater. This blasts warm, fume-free air to keep you toasty all day long.

.

.

Tell Brides Up North about the Snowflakes and Schnapps event (pictured)?

.

This was a collaboration between TotallyTipi, Chilled Events and Horti-Couture at Thwaites Mill to provide a pop-up Christmas party venue in Leeds. Thwaites Mill is just 2 miles from the city centre and is a gorgeous hidden gem. The teepees looked stunning against the backdrop of trees and the beautiful old buildings at the mill.

.

We wanted to show that the tents are good for the winter months and have them out and about rather than hanging about in their bags!

.

As Christmas events are an obvious choice, we worked with Chilled Events who brought in the clients.

The events were a hit and despite it being -3c outside, we had to turn the heating down! We’re certainly hoping to do more in 2013.

.

.

LMX Creative for TotallyTipi

.

.

.

.

What extras are available for a couple hiring a tipi?

.

In order to help make our events as bespoke required, we don’t have a ‘set list’ of accessories for hire; we have access to a constantly evolving, HUGE list of accessories, furniture, fabrics and decor that can be hired to furnish the teepees. From the smallest rustic vase to the most twinkling grand chandelier, we can help!

.

We can also bring the flames outdoors with our recycled Indian fire bowls which have optional hanging bowls for mulled wine or a chilli and our festoon-lit walkway (pictured) adds a real hit of glamour on approach to the tipi.

.

.

LMX Creative for TotallyTipi

.

.

LMX Creative for TotallyTipi

.

.

LMX Creative for TotallyTipi

.

.

Where are you located and can you travel?

.

We’re based in South Yorkshire, S75 between Barnsley and Wakefield but travel nationwide across England, Scotland and Wales. It’s a great spot because Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester are all a hop, skip and a jump away with easy access to the M1 and A1.

.

.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

.

Most events for 100 people work out at around £4,000 including lighting, tables, chairs, dance floor and the fire.  Numbers of 100 – 150 guests require a third tipi which adds an average of £2,000 to the price by the time you’ve also accounted for the additional flooring and lighting.

.

.

.

.

How can Brides Up North find out more?

.

Visit the TotallyTipi website or get in touch direct! We’re available 7 days a week for enquiries either on 08456 805 209 or via email info@totallytipi.com.

Location, Location, Location! Supplier Showcase: Sykes Cottages

January 21st, 2013 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Slipping away to a cottage retreat in the middle of nowhere (or somewhere near to spas and shopping where the neighbours can’t hear your raucous singing) for one last “relaxing” weekend with the girls might be expected as your big day approaches, but have you considered a holiday cottage as a potential venue for the wedding day itself?

.

In my job as a full time and bridal features writer, I come across gems of wedding venues all the time – from the stately and sublime to the cosy and chic, but I must admit that I hadn’t considered the option of hiring a holiday cottage to host a private and personal wedding celebration until I was approached by Brides Up North sponsor Sykes Cottages

.

Why haven’t I thought of this before?

.

Sykes Cottages manage a veritable smorgasbord of beautiful holiday homes which are available to hire for your special day.  Think about it – it’s a wedding “at home” (the dream home of your choice, selected from a vast variety of options that you can browse online), but “on location” at the same time.  Choose your property, location, length of stay and any added extras… then send out the save the dates.  And, as the mini-moon and staycation remain as popular as ever,  the after the event possibilities are endless too.

.

Genius.  Maybe that girly get-away can wait…

.

.

Sykes Cottages - Alternative Wedding Venues & Honeymoons

.

.

Amanda of Sykes Cottages says: So you’ve got the ring (congratulations!) and now you can look forward to the next few weeks and months of planning every little detail of your big day. From the dress to the flowers and the transport, your ‘to-do’ list seems endless.

.

When it comes to the venue, your decision is crucial as the venue itself will dictate the tone of the entire day. Whether you choose a grand stately home, your childhood church or an outdoor location, choosing the venue is one of the biggest and most difficult decisions before the big day. But if a grand property isn’t quite what you have in mind, perhaps a more intimate wedding venue would fit the bill.

.

.

Sykes Cottages - Alternative Wedding Venues & Honeymoons

.

.

.

Finding a holiday cottage ideal for your wedding isn’t as difficult as you might think. Choose a grand property set in beautiful grounds for the wow factor with an intimate feel or a more traditional cottage for a romantic, outdoorsy style. Some properties even have a dance floor, offer a private chef and maid service to ensure your nuptials go without a hitch.

.

.

Feeling at home at the venue a few days before the wedding should help settle those last minute nerves on the big day. Book a make-up artist or hairdresser so you and your bridesmaids kick start the day in style. If you’re planning a big day with a home-spun feel, choosing a property to accommodate all the guests in the run up to the wedding is a great choice: make use of the willing volunteers and create a truly unique backdrop to your big day.

Wherever you choose to celebrate your big day, choosing a holiday cottage for the occasion is a good way to guarantee a totally unique wedding. Pick a holiday cottage in some of the UK’s most stunning countryside for exceptional wedding photos that you’ll love forever.

Instead of disappearing on honeymoon towards the end of the reception, many couples now choose to enjoy the first few days of wedded bliss closer to home before embarking on their honeymoon to remember later on. While tradition dictates that the groom to be is responsible for planning (and financing!) the honeymoon, it certainly doesn’t hurt you to drop a few hints in the lead-up to the big day!

.

Choosing a holiday cottage is a really great way to combine the high-end finish of a boutique hotel with all the privacy you want in your first few days as a married couple. Find honeymoon accommodation with a private hot tub and celebrate with a glass of champagne under the stars for the perfect start to married life any time of year.

.

For a summer honeymoon, why not choose a holiday cottage with access to a swimming pool or by a secluded beach for a wonderful few days. Winter brides might prefer a cosy, traditional cottage with a roaring log fire for romantic days and nights in. Wherever you choose to spend those first few days as Mr and Mrs, you’re sure to leave with memories to treasure.

Sparkling White: A Real Winter Wedding In York – Anna & Lee

York Winter Wedding - Dominic Wright Photography

Anna and Lee’s sparkling Winter wedding feels like the perfect way to begin a fresh new week here on the wedding blog.  With tons of twinkle, crisp whites and beautiful images by super talented Brides Up North Featured Supplier Dominic Wright Photography, Anna and Lee’s day is inspiration all the way.  Enjoy.

Anna says:  We got engaged at the Minster in York on the 14th February 2012. I wasn’t expecting it all at as Lee hates Valentine’s Day so I was very shocked and thrilled.

We were married on Sunday 23rd December 2012 at The Hospitium, Museum gardens, York.  We loved the 14th century building and the mixture of the stone work and pillars downstairs and more modern upstairs. We thought it would be the perfect Christmas wedding venue. The setting in Museum gardens meant that we could have beautiful photographs (thanks to our amazing photographers!) in the Abbey ruins that are in the grounds of the park.

I wanted a winter wonderland with lots of foliage, twinkle and Christmas touches.  I used a lot of white sparkle and then greens through the bridesmaid dresses and the foliage.

We put a surprise guided bus tour on (with bubbly!) for all our guests. It picked the guests up from Hotel Du Vin, York and the guests then had a personalised tour of the city before being dropped at the venue of the wedding.

I wanted a huge princess dress that was very classy and beautiful. I bought my stunning Pronovias dress from Brides of Harrogate. I wanted the groom, best man and fathers to be in classic three piece suits. The groom’s suit was a William Hunt (Savile Row) suit.  The bridesmaid’s dresses were from Brides of Harrogate also and were made by the designer Mori Lee.

My make-up was by Julia Spink and the beautiful hair (bride, bride’s mother, bridesmaids and flower girls was all done by Hannah Green.

I had recorded the children in my school singing a beautiful and moving song to be played through ceremony (which had many of our guests in tears). Then we had Christmas songs playing throughout the drinks reception.

Its so hard to pick a favourite part of the day! The reaction of everyone (including the groom who cried) when I walked into the room, the relaxed atmosphere and the knowledge that everyone was absolutely loving the day and buzzing with it and of course wearing my stunning dress and seeing my groom looking gorgeous, as were all of my guests. It really was the most amazing day.

We had personalised crackers which matched the incredible stationery designed and made by my sister in law, Kate Wells. She made the most stunning ‘Advent Calendar’ invitations for our guests to open on the days leading up to the wedding. The guests loved them! There were also personalised teddies for the flower girls to open at the meal.

The delicious catering was by Bradshaws of York.  My mother in law made a beautiful ivory wedding cake with flowers on it to tie in with the theme.

Given the time of year and the fact that our daughter is only two, we didn’t fancy a long hall flight for our honeymoon. We ended up booking a luxury cottage in Northumberland, so we had five nights relaxing as a family, with meals out and beautiful walks on the beach every day.

.

.

.

My top tip for other Brides Up North is to make sure you stick to your guns about the sort of day you want. If you are happy and relaxed on the day all your guests will be too. Unfortunately the saying is true – you get what you pay for, so pick out the things that are really important to you and then see if you can cut back (or make your own) in other areas. Guests will love your personalised and individual touches.

Happy Sunday Brides Up North!  How are you spending yours?

.

Today is one of those rare days when I have absolutely nothing in the diary whatsoever.  No calls to make, events to host or attend, not even a family roast dinner.  And you know what?  Rather than feeling bored or restless, I’m absolutely revelling in it!

.

If you are a regular reader of the blog, you’ll know that the last few weeks months have been super hectic here at Brides Up North towers, with a huge home and office move thrown into the usual mayhem, just to keep things interesting.  So I’m grabbing hold of this glorious free time with both hands, using it to relax, recharge, read the Vogue Catwalk Report, feather my nest and catch up with all the outstanding admin issues that the past fortnight’s dodgy server and internet provision have left me with.  I’m hoping that I’ll enter next week feeling thoroughly fresh.  And goodness, do I have some gorgeous to share with you next week…

.

.

Marilyn

Marilyn

.

In the meantime, I thought that I should spread this unusual January joy by spreading a little happiness to one of my lovely readers too (yes, it could be you!).  Whether you are a bride to be, wedding watcher or industry reader, this fabulous prize – courtesy of my friends at Simply Be, the online retailer for plus size fashion, exclusively for sizes 14 – 32 – could be winging it’s way to you!

The ivory coloured petal trim dress has a fabulously feminine feel, with pretty ruffled straps and a super floaty fabric to have you gliding down the aisle. For those who like a little more arm coverage, the clean lines of our long sleeved wedding dress are perfect. Or for something a little different, pick our knot-front bridal gown in soft blush peach – it makes a gorgeous plus size bridesmaid dress too and is available with a matching bridal shrug.

The Life & Times Of A Wedding Blogger: Behind The Blog

January 19th, 2013 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Wow.  It’s been an action packed couple of months behind the scenes here at Northern Revolution HQ.  A busy, but fabulous blur, with a blink and you’ll miss it family Christmas.  I’m still catching my breath from 2012 as we forge ahead with our best laid plans (and some exciting new challenges) this month. Have you checked out our action packed Brides Up North Luxury Wedding Exhibition schedule, starting at Allerton Castle on Sunday 17th February?!  Click the big pink banner at the top of the page!

.

As well as the usual action packed writing, work and events schedule, whilst everyone else was hibernating we’ve thrown in the launch of a rather fabulous stately pile and brand new wedding venue at Thorp Perrow in North Yorkshire, styled some beautiful Brides Up North inspiration shoots, submitted a raft of freelance articles for the biggest and best regional and national bridal titles, completed a spot of judging for The Wedding Industry Awards and The Wedding Ideas Magazine Awards, welcomed some fabulous new Featured Suppliers to our Directory, packed up and shipped out for a long overdue huge home and office move to the (currently in a state of drilling, painting and dodgy server disarray) new Brides Up North HQ and the most important job of all: been cooking this brand new baby!

.

Something tells me that the next few months are going to be the most interesting of all… eep! I am so excited.
