Eeny Meeny Miny Moe… Dealing With Guest List Stress

November 21st, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

If you’re any way into your wedding planning and you’ve escaped an argument over the guest list, you’re doing damn well.

.

For those of us who haven’t escaped the stress of the plus-one pleas, read on, our regular guest blogger Rachel of Mosaic Brides is back with some more of her words of wisdom.

.

.

Keep Calm Its Just A Guest List

.

.

Rachel says:  For many wedding couples putting together the guest list is the most stressful part of the planning process.  The task goes far beyond simply drawing up a list of the friends and relatives you want present to share your special day as issues such as plus ones, inviting children and the parents’ guest lists come into play.

.

In the early stages it’s important to look carefully at your venue(s) and budget; how many guests does the venue allow and how far will your budget stretch when everything including food, drink and favours are taken into account?

.

Couples should also think about the type of ceremony they want; while some will prefer to keep things simple with a small and intimate affair, others will want to make the most of their moment in the limelight by filling the church to the rafters.

.

Once these initial discussions have taken place it’s a good idea to draw up a rough guest list to give you an idea of numbers – but be warned, along the way you are likely to face the following dilemmas:

.

.

Pushy Parents

.

A topic I have discussed in a previous blog post and an area that should be handled with care.

This is probably where most disagreements over the guest list will occur as parents can have their own ideas on who should be invited to the wedding and it might not correlate with your own.

.

While parents can be helpful in drawing up the guest list they can also get carried away, keen to invite as many people as possible to witness the momentous occasion. This can often lead to parents insisting distant relatives and friends of theirs make the list – people who neither you nor your fiancé may have ever met.

.

Reining them in can be difficult especially if they’re footing some, or all, of the bill. Some parents have even been known to say they will pay for the additional guests they want to invite making it twice as hard to say no.

.

Make exceptions where possible to avoid family fall-outs ahead of the wedding but also don’t be afraid to put your foot down if their plans start to impact on your own. For example, if the numbers would tip you over your venue’s capacity, if you would have to leave out your close friends to make way for their guests and if the numbers would disrupt the desired atmosphere for the day.

.

At this point you may have to sit parents down and explain that such large numbers would take away the intimacy of the day and that you and your fiancé would feel awkward having to spend your special day making pleasantries with people who you don’t know.

.

.

Friends vs Family

.

Another tricky area when it comes to deciding on numbers.

.

For some, weddings are all about the joining of two families and therefore relatives should make up the majority of the guest list. Meanwhile for others a wedding is one big party making lots of friends an essential ingredient.

.

To help decide on the family/friend ratio look at where you can draw a line in the family tree to allow space for mates. In other words, after immediate family how far do you go – aunts and uncles? Cousins? Great aunts and uncle? Second cousins?

.

This is the best way to cut off invites without causing offence or family rifts as you can provide a logical explanation for your actions.

.

.

Lets Give Up & Go Down The Pub

.

.

Children

.

Another sensitive area I have visited on the blog before.

.

In short, child invites can cause the guest list to rocket so again consider your venue capacity, budget and the type of ceremony you will be having before deciding on whether to invite children or not, and if so, who?

.

.

Plus Ones

.

Weddings are expensive and every extra body can add more than £100 to the bill, so choose who you allow plus ones to with care.  While couples are under no obligation to grant guests plus ones there are certain situations where many choose to do so.

.

For example invitations are often extended to partners of the bridesmaids and groomsmen, especially for the evening reception, as a thank you for all their hard work in the run up to and during the big day.

.

Most couples also choose to invite a guest’s long term partner especially those who are engaged/married or living together. Alternatively some couples may prefer to save their plus one places for guests’ partners who they have actually met. In either of these cases the invite would normally have both guests’ name on it.

Meanwhile for those generous enough to allow their single friends to bring a date the invite would state the friend’s name ‘and guest’.

.

Good luck!

.

How have you dealt with guest list issues?  Any tips for the rest of us?

You Are My Sunshine! A Real Destination Engagement Shoot In Lake Como – Lou & Chris (Plus One!)

November 20th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Baby, it’s cold (and grim) outside.  And it’s a Tuesday. Ugh.

.

But not in Lake Como, Italy, where it feels like Sunday every day of the week, and where we head this afternoon to hear about Lou & Chris’ love story and their destination wedding.  Let’s fly away.

.

With images by Jess Petrie Photography.

Lou says:  We got engaged on Christmas day. Chris wrapped the ring box in a box and in another box until it looked much bigger. He put it in a stocking until later in the evening when we were alone. It was a total surprise.

.

.

Jess Petrie Photography

.

We got married in a beautiful Villa at Lake Como on 27th September 2013.

We knew each other at school but Chris got in touch on Facebook 22 years later. We led totally different lives so would never have met otherwise.  After talking on Facebook for a few months we agreed to meet. Chris is in the army and was recovering from surgery on his hip. I dragged him on crutches up and down steps to the restaurant I wanted, he was in pain as I chatted away but he never said. He said I was like an armadillo… a hard back with a soft underbelly and I was intrigued he had analysed me so well and so soon.

Keeping It Fresh! A Real Wedding In Northumberland – Stephanie & Martin

November 20th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

Northumberland Wedding by Andrew Billington Photography

.

.

Welcome to Tuesday Brides Up North!  No “it’s only the middle of the month and the overdraft is maxed on wedding paraphernalia” dreariness here!  No way Jose!

.

Only the stunningly beautiful Real Wedding of North East couple Stephanie & Martin, with images by Andrew Billington Photography.  Crisp, cool and romantic, Stephanie and Martin’s big day is contemporary, fresh and oh so lovely

Stephanie says:  We stayed at a romantic farm cottage in Hexham on New Years Eve 2010 – Martin proposed outside of the cottage before we went out for the evening.

.

We were married on 23rd August 2012 at Eshott Hall, Northumberland.  It was exactly what I had imagined for us. It’s a period building with lots of character but intimate and smaller than other Halls I had been to. It felt very special.

We opted for a simple colour scheme of ivory, pink and white.  I chose a lace over tulle San Patrick wedding dress with spaghetti straps and a heart shaped bust, from Wendy Coles Bridal in Monkwearmouth.

.

My bridesmaids wore coral rose coloured full length strapless dresses from Coast and the boys wore suits from French Connection

We had a very special guest – an RAF Sea King helicopter!  It was a flyover from RAF Boulmer as Martin is a Search & Rescue helicopter pilot.

The food at Eshott was fabulous, and I loved getting married on the stairs below the stained glass window – it felt really special and different to any wedding I had been to.

Our cake was a combination of two tiers of fruit & one sponge decorated with pink icing roses, made by Martins grandparents who are (handily!) retired bakers.  We also chose a cake of cheese – bought from Fenwick’s food hall, Newcastle.

Martin made flight tickets for the guests and the destinations were places we had either been or were going to on our honeymoon, and they were the names of the tables.

.

We also left postcards of the places on the tables so that people could write us a special message and the beers on the table matched the table names – e.g. Phuket table had Chang beer & the Barcelona table had San Miguel beer etc!

There were a few favourite moments for me.  Martin did a rhyming speech which was hilarious and Martin’s brother sang during the ceremony which was really special.

After the wedding we took a long honeymoon and travelled around Thailand for three weeks.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to stay true to what you originally want for your wedding – don’t be swayed by expensive stuff and extras that you don’t really need.

Fabulous Photographer: Diamond Photography PLUS Free Signature Mount For Wedding Blog Readers!

November 19th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

This wedding blog would never have made it to it’s second birthday (you can read about another exciting year in business here) nor grown so quickly as a recognised and credible brand within the wedding industry without the support of amazing regional suppliers like today’s Featured Supplier, Diamond Photography.

.

Let’s meet fabulous North East wedding photographer Andrew, take a look on the other side of the lens and find out what makes him tick – and click!  Plus, watch out for an early Christmas present from Diamond Photography -  a free Signature Mount (a stylish guest book alternative) for every bride who books their wedding photography with him quoting Brides Up North.

.

What’s not to like?

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

How did you get into wedding photography?

.

Totally by chance really. I’ve had many jobs and worked with many prestigious companies. I have many qualifications including a 1st class honours degree. But the one constant throughout it all has been photography. Photography had always been a hobby, something I used to relax and for fun. Then we were asked by some friends to cover their wedding and had an amazing time. They loved the pictures and that gave us the confidence to dip our toes into the industry, we’ve never looked back!

.

Diamond Photography

.

.
Why wedding photography specifically?

.

A great question! The thing we love most about weddings in the emotion of the day, the tears, the laughter and those heart felt moments. It is such as privilege to be part of a day that is often the most important in a couple lives.

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

What is your favourite thing about being a wedding photographer?

.

Wedding photography gives us the opportunity to work with great people. Whether it’s the bride and groom, venue staff, singers, magicians, the list goes on. The North is blessed with a vibrant wedding industry.
.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

How do you get couples to relax on the day?

.

A little humour normally does it. I’ve been around people all my working life and have a good sense for when people are a little nervous. I may say or ask them to do something stupid, invariably it ends up in laughter and relaxes the mood.

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.
Any advice to any brides who don’t like to have their picture taken?

.

Speak to your photographer in advance and explain how you feel. A good photographer will be able to blend into the background and a lot of the time you won’t even know they are there.

.

.

What sort of makeup should a bride wear to look great in her pictures?

.

Personally I would say it’s all about feeling comfortable. So wear what makes you feel good!

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.
Anything to avoid which might look bad in the wedding pictures?

.

Not really. What may look bad in one picture can make another, it’s all about capturing the moment.
.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

Which celebrity wedding would you most like to photograph and why?

.

Lady Gaga! Simply because I imagine her dress would be a real talking point…

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

Are you married? Tell us about your day.

.

Yes! Mandy and I were married on the HMS Trincomalee in Hartlepool. I have to be honest and Mandy took control of most things (if not everything). I’m struggling to think of a single thing which I actually decided, of course I was consulted, unfortunately after the decision had been made most of the time. Looking back I wouldn’t change a single thing, except maybe when she stood on my toe during the vows which made me cry!

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

What sets you apart from other wedding photographers?

.

It may sound like an odd thing but I would say customer service. There are many good photographers in the North East but there is more to being professional than taking good pictures. For us it’s not just about the day it’s about the whole package, from the first contact and until you are 110% happy! If you want an extra meeting we will come to you. If you want change your package after booking, not a problem. If you want something extra, it can be arranged. When your images are ready, we will deliver them to you. When your album is ready, we will deliver it to you. Before and after your wedding we are here to help YOU!

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

Diamond Photography

.

.

What can a couple who book you expect on the day?

.

We are down to earth friendly people. We will be polite, professional and let your day flow.

.

.

What is included in your "package"?

.

Our packages are totally configurable and can be customised for every bride and groom.  Currently a full days coverage is £800, with albums, DVDs etc charged separately.

.

.

Can you do a discount for Brides Up North readers?

.

All Brides Up North readers will receive a FREE 20 x 16 signature mount!  Please quote Brides Up North when booking.

Marquee In The Meadow: A Real Wedding In Derbyshire – Francesca & Ivan

November 19th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Wedding in Yorkshire by Andy Hook Photography

.

.

After a weekend off celebrating two years in business (lets wait till The Brides Up North Christmas Party for that!) indulging in a bit of shopping with the girls, catching up on emails and invoicing and a really rather good pub lunch at our soon to be local, I’m diving back into the Real Wedding pretty headfirst.

.

Monday is off to a fabulous start with this beautiful big day in Yorkshire and Derbyshire, sent to me by real bride and Brides Up North Featured Supplier Francesca of the gorgeous bridal boutique Choola in Sheffield and talented Andy Hook Photography

.

I always love to see how industry colleagues style their own celebrations, and Francesca and Ivan’s perfectly pastel country meadow wedding certainly doesn’t disappoint on ooh factor (not least because of their cute ring bearers – watch out for them).  Let’s hear from the lady herself.

Francesca says:  We got engaged (unofficially) at The British Bridal Exhibition in March 2011! I guess there couldn’t be a more perfect place with us owning a bridal boutique!   Ivan took me completely by surprise but as he wanted my parent’s permission first we had to keep it secret until a few days later when he had been to see my parents. He then officially proposed in May with a beautiful ring made especially from my black pearl given to me for my 18th birthday set with two stunning diamonds!

.

.

Andy Hook Photography

.

.

We tied the knot on 16th June 2012 at St James Church, Norton, Sheffield followed by a “Marquee in the Meadow” reception behind my in-laws’ home in Bakewell, Derbyshire.

.

The church holds many memories for me so there was no where else we could have married! It is a beautiful church and having attended since being a little girl, I knew I would feel totally at ease walking down aisle there.

.

We wanted to have a marquee reception as we didn’t want anything too formal and wanted a setting completely unique to us where no one had been before. It meant we could put our own stamp on it and there wouldn’t be any restrictions.  Our family is very relaxed and often quite spontaneous so having the marquee gave us the freedom to just let the day evolve, without any time restrictions or rules!

We wanted the wedding to have that thrown together kind of look. I love anything classic but quirky so that’s what we went for: relaxed country glamour.   We chose several colours to work with:  lemon, pale pink, mint green, lavender and powder blue. This was reflected in the bridesmaids’ dresses and flowers.

.

.

Andy Hook Photography

.

.

I was very spoiled and had a beautiful couture gown made for me by the very talented Sharon Bowen Haute Couture. I have always loved Sharon’s collections and knew that she would be the only person to make my dress. Having previously designed for Dior and Chloe I knew I was in safe hands!

.
Sharon and I designed the dress together and it was perfect. It was made from duchesse satin, tulle, beaded lace and hand stitched silk flowers. The jacket was made from matching hand beaded lace.

I wanted a dress that was very “me”. It had to be quirky but still classic enough to stand the test of time.

I have to admit that I did feel a bit of pressure to wear something spectacular! As the owner of a bridal boutique, I was constantly being asked what I was going to wear so I was a little worried that it wouldn’t live up to expectations!

.

My something old was my sister’s veil. We re-made it to create a “frouf” as we affectionately called it! This created volume before the train of the veil.  My something new was my dress and my fabulous Aruna Seth shoes!  My something borrowed was my best friends gorgeous Chanel earrings and my something blue was a ribbon stitched into my gown.  As well as my veil, I also wore a diamante seahorse hairclip in my hair. I absolutely love seahorses and knew I would have to involve them somewhere!

.

I carried the most stunning bouquet made mostly from peonies – my favourite flower – along with roses, lavender, rosemary and a whole host of other beautiful flowers by Petalis, Sheffield.

The bridesmaids dresses were by Alvina Valenta and Jim Hjelm.  I wanted each of the girls to wear a different dress in a different colour and it was one of the easiest shopping trips ever! They all loved their gowns and I think it took less than an hour for all five of them to try on, decide and order.  They then all wore fabulous heels by Paradox London all dyed to match their dresses individually. I gave them each a silver bracelet to wear on the day as well as a candle in the scent used for the wedding to remind them of the day!

The groomsmen all wore morning suits from Dapper Suits in charcoal and black with double breasted waistcoats. They wore soft dove grey and ivory and each chose their own tie. It was great to see a mixture of spots, stripes and colour.  Ivan and the best man Alisdaire wore sand coloured linen double breasted waistcoats. They all looked very handsome!

.

.

Andy Hook Photography

.

.

Ivan arrived at the church in a vintage Austin Healey that belongs to his father. His dad spent months restoring the car so we could use it for the wedding! Ivan’s mum tied coloured ribbons to the handles and made a “Just Married” sign complete with shining tin cans.

During the service, Ivan surprised me by having our dogs as ring bearers! He pretended to have forgotten the rings and then whistled and our Jack Russell came scampering down the ails with the ring tied to a bow! A second whistle and our Springer spaniel came running down the aisle with the other ring! Fabulous!

Saying my vows and marrying my best friend was so overwhelming I could have burst with happiness.

.

.

When we came out of the church, the ushers made a shotgun arch and as Ivan and I walked through, they all fired confetti from their shotguns!  Ivan runs a shoot and we were keen for our day to really reflect us and what is special to us, so having our dogs involved in our ceremony and shotguns firing confetti was just perfect for us.

After the rain had stopped, the best man surprised us by having access to some private land behind Hassop Hall. This meant we could get some spectacular photos overlooking the valley sitting on the back of the Austin Healy. Just magical! Ivan and I then sped off in the car around Bakewell with the “just married” sign flapping in the wind and tin cans rattling along the road! It was a wonderful moment that will never leave me.

.
Once we arrived at the marquee (now back in the Mercedes to save the Austin Healey from being wrecked!) we were greeted by a red tractor to tow us onto the field! The heavy rain has made the lane and field impassable so cue tractor and toe rope and bride and groom arrived safely at the marquee much to the amusement and delight of our guests. I don’t think many brides arrive being dragged by a tractor but yet again it just added to the fun of the day!

We only used little decoration in the marquee (Ascot Marquees) as we wanted the gorgeous flowers to really stand out. Some bunting, lanterns, candles and some hanging hearts and birds completed the look. We also had a Bride and Groom Scarecrow to greet our guests in the entrance to the marquee that Ivan had spent hours making the night before the wedding in the pouring rain. They were fantastic though and added to the country feel of the day.

We had a gorgeous cake made for us by Anna of HunkyDory Cakes in Sheffield. We gave her a rough brief but then left her to her own devices and the result was amazing. We were very laid back about all aspects of our wedding and I loved walking into the marquee and having the cake and flowers as a surprise. The cake was four tiers made of fruit, chocolate, lemon and mocha. Delicious!

.

The rest of the catering was done by Big On Taste near Derby.

.

We had a jazz band (The Bungalow Band) to play for the guests on arrival at the marquee. They were so good that the guests were dancing straight away! We sadly only caught the end of them as we were away having our photographs taken (and having a drink in the pub).  We then had a live band for the evening called Twice Around and Mick, the drummer and family friend also DJ’d for us.  The dance floor was packed all night!

After the wedding we had a couple of days in the Lake District staying at Candlewyck Barn arranged for us by the best man. We could only take a couple of days off though as we had so many brides marrying this summer that we had to get back to the shop! We are planning to take our “honeymoon proper” this Christmas though.

.

.

Andy Hook Photography

.

.

I have two tips for other Brides Up North, one practical and the other profound!

.

The first, is if you can, have a wedding planner. Lisa Hilliard was fantastic and as it was a marquee reception, having someone there to oversee all the logistics was very reassuring. She was fantastic on the day and really enabled everyone to relax and enjoy the day.

.

The second tip is don’t over-think things and don’t worry!  All that matters is that you get to marry your soul mate! It’s very easy to get wrapped up in small details or worrying about what may or may not be. Ultimately it’s the marriage that matters with the day simply being the start of a fantastic journey so don’t sweat the small things.  With my husband and I having had our fair share of tragedy, we have learnt that life is short and very precious. Put things into perspective and make the most of what really matters.  The day comes and goes so quickly that my advice is to enjoy every minute of the planning and the day, whilst it may be a cliché it really is the best day of your life, so relax, don’t stress, and enjoy!

.

.

.

.

Congratulations Francesca & Ivan!
