September Sunflowers! A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Liz & Andrew

August 10th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

A Yorkshire Wedding by JB Creatives

.

.

I thought I’d start Friday off with a cheerful September wedding, packed with smiles, sunflowers and personal touches.  Just perfect!  Many thanks to the fabulous Jane at JB Creatives and today’s reader and real bride Liz for making the countdown to the weekend that little bit more lovely.

.

Liz says:  We got engaged in April 2009 at the gorgeous Swinton Castle where we’d spent our first weekend away together. Andrew had arranged it all so that I thought I was going to a work event there, then when I got there he was there on one knee!

.

We were married on September 24th 2011, at St Mary’s Church in the grounds of Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal with the reception at the lovely Crown Inn in Roecliffe

.

St Mary’s is a very special church as it’s on the estate where I have worked as a wedding co-ordinator for the last four years, and is a redundant church which requires a special licence to be granted in order to marry there.

We chose a relaxed and a little rustic theme with bunting and lots of cakes, and with purple as the main colour to tie everything together.

I chose a lovely floaty simple chiffon and beaded dress from Award Winning Confetti & Lace Harrogate. I asked a local dressmaker to make a shoulder strap which was added on the day.

.

My bridesmaids wore purple dresses from LK Bennett and the ushers wore grey suits from Yorkshire Menswear in Harrogate.

Wednesday Wedding Inspiration!

August 8th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

Simple Sea Mist

.

1. Wedding Wishes Bottles 2. Mellifluous Necklace 3. Seafoam Lacie Shoes 4. J Crew Sinclair Dress 5. Stemmed Sea Glass 6. Sea Shell Cake 7. Sea Glass Earrings 8. Sea Island Stationery 9. Jenny Packham Berkley Gown

.

A good friend of mine came to me with a wedding dilemma recently (yes, I do get a lot of that!), asking how to incorporate her favourite colour – green – into her wedding day, without it looking too, well, green.  She had considered other colour schemes, but just didn’t want to leave her favourite out, yet couldn’t quite get it right.

.

Leave it to guest blogger Katy of What Katy Did Next and her fantastic fortnightly wedding inspiration boards to come up with the solution in this beautiful sea mist collage.

.

.

Katy says: Though I’m sure (in the North) we are all sick of excessive water, I have taken this week’s inspiration from the sea and created a simple and elegant beachy wedding style. Seafoam, mint and sage greens are so beautiful combined together or used alone. I have used them to soften the simple stark white Jenny Packham gown, which would work so perfectly with the textured freshwater pearl necklace from BHLDN that has a tassel tipped strands that dangle down your back, begging to be shown off! Team it with a tousled updo – which is great for a beach wedding and keeps the sea breeze from messing with your locks.

.
You can be sure your accessories are completely unique with the Sea Glass Earrings handmade by Surf & Silver Sea Glass Jewellery. They would make perfect gifts for your bridesmaids. I am completely in love with the J Crew ‘Dusty Shale’ coloured chiffon dress! The draping is exquisite but if the style isn’t for all your maids the colour is available in other styles too. Stick with the sea theme and have flashes of sea glass in your bouquet or a charm around the base.

.
My favourite part? Possibly the coloured glass bottles labelled ‘Wedding Wishes’ – words of wisdom and loving messages left from all your guests, which would make a fabulous keepsake in your love nest! I am also blown away by the simple but effective cake – seriously stylish!

.

.

And her wedding inspiration brilliance isn’t all that Katy is offering us this week! Katy is holding a giveaway over on her blog and she would like to invite Brides Up North readers to enter too.  For the chance to win a bespoke headpiece  from What Katy Did Next to the value of £150 you just have to email info@what-katy-did-next.co.uk with your details or comment on Katy’s blog post (say hello from Brides Up North too!).  The competition closes on 27th August 2012.

.

.

.

.

Remember: the plan is to share a new inspiration board in this time slot every week, either compiled by myself, regular guest blogger Katy or YOU: get in touch with your own ideas and inspiration boards! We’ll be discussing our inspirations behind the images too so it’s simply going to be a whole load of lovely.

.

If you are a little less arty but in need of inspiration and still want to play along, we will also be taking requests for colour schemes and themes and making bespoke boards for my readers. Please contact me to suggest a theme or colour scheme.

City Chic! A Real Wedding In Manchester – Kate & Mark

August 8th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Due to behind the scenes technical issues here at Brides Up North yesterday afternoon (doh!), we only managed to bring you one instalment of lovely yesterday (double doh!).  Happily, things are all fixed now and it’s on with the show (yippee!).  And I’m definitely making up for the delay!

.

Keeping the pretty coming as we conquer Wednesday, with a beautiful black and white wedding in the North West, sent to me by Brides Up North Featured Supplier Dominic Wright Photography and real bride Kate.  Much shoe envy at Brides Up North HQ right now.

Great John Street Hotel Wedding Manchester - Dominic Wright Photography

.

Kate says:  We got engaged in July 2008.  Mark arranged a secret trip to Budapest (a place I have always wanted to visit). He even packed my passport as I had no idea that morning we would be jetting off. By midnight we were standing on the fairy lit chain bridge overlooking the Danube where he proposed with a gorgeous sparkly ring.

We were married on 1st July 2012 at The Great John Street Hotel, When I first met Mark he had a flat opposite the hotel, and when we first visited it we were blown away by the style and attention to detail.

.

We walked onto the roof terrace and just looked at each other in agreement. I think I just knew that I could have the wedding of my dreams with no alteration to the venue and even no further decoration was needed: it was perfect.

Mark and I have similar tastes (which is lucky) We love the class and simplicity of Jo Malone packaging and The White Company so our theme became black and white with a pop of red (because I love red shoes).

My best friend and bridesmaid Gill has a brilliant eye for dressing figures and even though we set out with Grecian dresses in mind Gill knew my figure would suit an hourglass corseted dress and she was right. As soon as I tried the Maggie Sottero Anniston dress I loved my shape in it, I loved the sparkles, the lace and the tulle. Gill said the perfect dress is one you don’t have to alter and she was right. I bought the dress in Blush a bridal boutique in Uppermill where we lived at the time. My tiara was from Glitzy Secrets and my shoes from Kurt Geiger.

I wanted my bridesmaids to look glam and sophisticated but most of all I wanted them to be able to wear the dresses again. With help from Gill again we found these stunning little black tulle dresses on ASOS.

.

For the flower girls I set my heart on the Bridget dress from Monsoon which happened to be a best selling line that sold out online and in most stores. Fortunately we chanced upon the sizes we needed on day in King Street just when I was looking for a substitute dress.

.

Mark wore a gorgeous grey suit from Hugo Boss which they had custom fit for him and the groomsmen wore black suits with gunmetal grey ties.

I carried cream avalanche roses by Paula from Orchard Designs in Heaton Norris, she was very lovely and exceed my expectations.

Our cake was made to order by the very talented Andrea Eckersley at Cake BombShe makes the most delicious, moist, tasty cakes ever. We had vanilla and jam, carrot cake and chocolate with soft centre cup cakes and a devilish chocolate top cake – it was too good!

My favourite part of the day was the speeches.  The nerves were over for me, the champagne was flowing and so were the tears (of joy of course) and just to have everyone you love around you hearing lovely things about you as a couple was my happiest moment. I felt like all the planning was worth it at that point. My father, brother-in law and husband all made such sincere, lovely speeches and I was very proud of them.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be however much you plan your time add twenty minutes to it I had all day to get ready and I was still twenty minutes late. Also do everything you can as early as possible before the wedding, you need a day or two before just to unwind to feel ready.

.

.

Congratulations Kate & Mark!

Rock That Frock! Supplier Showcase: Rocks & Roses

August 7th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Rocks & Roses Bridal Boutique North Yorkshire

.

.

This morning we are playing dress up, as we chat to Brides Up North Featured Supplier Chloe of the newly opened North Yorkshire bridal boutique Rocks & Roses about all things lace and tulle. I’m such an enabler (and not at all sorry about it!), I know!

.

Chloe says: After completing a fashion degree at Northumbria University, I knew I wanted to be involved in the bridal industry. However during and after my degree I worked for a large high street fashion brand, and I was progressing steadily. It wasn’t till later that I took a leap of faith with a brand new bridal store as the manager. It was in the field I wanted to be in, but unfortunately the owner lacked real passion and enthusiasm for the industry. It quickly became clear that I wanted to immerse myself in the world of weddings, the way it should be!

.

So I opened Rocks & Roses in March 2012. I actually have to give total credit to my Mum for the name, she once upon a time wanted to write a book called Rocky & Rosie, and although the book has never been started the name has always stayed with her. After discussing for hours, days and weeks, many other possibilities it became clear that Rocks & Roses had just stuck, and I’m so pleased it did!

.

.

Rocks & Roses Bridal Boutique in North Yorkshire

.

.

What wedding gowns do you stock?

.

We stock a beautiful collection by Annais Bridal. They were brand new to the UK last year, and Rocks & Roses is currently the only stockist throughout North Yorkshire and the North East! They have such a great focus on quality and design, using hand made lace from places such as Italy and adding intricate beadwork by hand.

.

We have recently taken on a collection of Amanda Wyatt dresses, which I absolutely love. From simplistic to fairy-tale they’re beautiful. All of Amanda Wyatt’s dresses are designed with real women in mind. She understands that not all brides are a size 10, and designs dresses to flatter every shape and size.

.

The other bridal collection in our boutique is Gallery by Private Label, a capsule collection of destination dresses for the lucky brides jet-setting off to exotic locations. This range is perfect as you get the style and quality of the other designers, but are much lighter with what I call “travel-ability”. In the future we hope to stock a larger range to keep up with demand for destination weddings.

.

.

What lines of bridal accessories do you stock?

.

The accessories are from Studio Bridal, Annais Bridal and Amanda Wyatt, made up of both vintage style and modern pieces that are hand made or hand finished. We stock a beautiful range of hand made crystal tiaras in a variety of colours and styles as well as a fabulous range of shoes, which can be ordered in colours to match the dresses or theme.

.

.

Kasumi by Annais Bridal at Rocks & Roses

Kasumi

.

.

Where are you located?

.

We are located just off the prestigious Northallerton High Street in North Yorkshire. We are No. 6, Zetland Street, above Cowley’s Cycles. Look out for our little topiary tree that stands at the entrance. There is free parking on the high street, and its a two minute walk from the long stay car park near Barkers department store.

.

.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

.

The bridal gowns range from £525 – £2,000. We also stock a collection of sample dresses, which are available “off the peg” and start at just £225. All brides are offered an interest free payment plan, allowing them to pay for the dress in instalments.

.

.

Emporia by Annais Bridal at Rocks & Roses

Emporia

.

.

Do Brides Up North need an appointment?

.

They don’t need an appointment, but we do recommend that they call ahead to ensure we can spend as much time with them as they need. We do however appreciate that finding “the one” can take time, and therefore offer exclusive 1-2 hour appointments during the week, if booked in advance, where we will ensure that no one can interrupt the appointment.

.

We also open Sundays 11-3pm, which is handy for busy brides.

.

.

What can Brides Up North expect when they come in for an appointment?

.

At Rocks & Roses we offer a relaxed and friendly approach to finding “the one”. The boutique is spacious and private, allowing brides to feel comfortable and at ease when trying on dresses. During the appointment, our attention is solely on them, to give as much advice and guidance as we possibly can. We do like to suggest that brides only bring those whose opinions they value most. Choosing your wedding dress is a big decision, and bringing people that are only interested in what they like, can make the experience confusing and less enjoyable.

.

.

Rosaria by Annais Bridal at Rocks & Roses

Rosaria

.

.

What is your current favourite wedding gown that you stock and why?

.

Ooh that’s a tough one, I love them all in different ways! I suppose for being so extraordinary I would say Kasumi by Annais Bridal, a tea length dress with hand made lace and feather detail on the skirt and a detachable halter-neck. For brides looking for an unusual or vintage style, this corseted dress offers just that. If I wore this it would be with fuchsia pink heels and a matching lipstick! This dress is available to order in all sizes and priced at just over £1,000.

.

.

Is there a particular style of wedding dress that is popular with your brides at the moment?

.

Surprisingly the most popular has been Rosaria, the plainest dress in the collection, but such a stunning style that just speaks for itself. The brides trying it on haven’t been enthralled but when they’ve tried it, have had a complete change of heart. It doesn’t have any “bling”, but with some sparkly accessories, a little bolero or a beautiful lace veil, this dress comes to life. It has a corset back, which gives such a gorgeous silhouette, and being so simple there is the option to change their look throughout the day. It works for both petite and curvy girls, its fab and oozes understated elegance! Available to order in all sizes and priced at £995.

.

.

Folie by Annais Bridal at Rocks & Roses

Folie

.

.

How does Rocks & Roses provide a superior experience to other wedding dress boutiques?

.

I’m sure many stores will also say the same: we want to offer our Brides the very best service and attention to detail, but after only four months, this really has been the thing that everyone has commented so positively on. We are patient, understanding and honest. We will not push you into a sale, it has to be completely your choice. If we feel you’re not sure or you would like to try a few more styles just to check, we are happy to give you our time and expertise to find the right dress for you. We have already had brides from as far as Somerset, Leeds and Huddersfield coming to us on recommendation alone. In such a short time, we feel this says a great deal about our service.

.

We also provide a very distinctive collection of dresses. Offering our brides something completely unique is something we are very keen to do. We have started with Annais Bridal, and would love to add to our collection with new and even graduate designers over the coming year.

.

.

Do you stock bridesmaid dresses?

.

We stock a fantastic range of bridesmaid dresses from Colour by Kenneth Winston. This collection is also fairly new to the UK and is very diverse; you can choose any style, in any length, colour and size. It also provides the opportunity to have bridesmaids in different styles but all the same colour, ensuring that they look and feel great in their dresses. There’s nothing worse than grumpy bridesmaids in your wedding photographs! Sizes available from 4-32 priced between £170 and £280. We also stock a great selection of “off the peg” dresses starting at just £69.

.

If you purchase a bridal gown from Rocks & Roses you will get 10% off your bridesmaids and flower-girl dresses.

.

We also stock a capsule collection of Mother of the Bride/Groom outfits, available in a variety of styles, colours and sizes.

.

.

Mandy by Annais Bridal at Rocks & Roses

Mandy

.

.

Who would be a Rocks & Roses bride?

.

We would like to think that any bride looking for her dream dress would like to come and pay us a visit. We have a beautiful boutique and a fabulous selection of dresses from traditional to contemporary. We don’t just cater for petite or curvy brides, so we believe we have something to suit all shapes and sizes. Our collections are also very unique, so for brides looking for something extra special, we would love for them to call into Rocks & Roses.

.

.

What gown would you choose for your own wedding day?

.

If I were to get married I would like to think I would wear a very fitted fish tail or mermaid dress like Coco by Amanda Wyatt. Having said that, like most brides, I haven’t tried many on and will probably end up choosing something completely the opposite (like Mandy by Annais Bridal!) Being in the industry has made me very open-minded about trying different styles, so I suppose I’ll just have to wait and see!
