October 13th, 2011 | Julia Braime

Have I got a treat for you this morning.

The lovely Skye from The Whimsical Cake Company absolutely nailed it when she supported my Brides Up North Tweet Up Yorkshire with her adorable sparkling white rose cupcakes and pretty pink Brides Up North cake pops.  The plates were literally licked clean!  And this was meant to be a posh and decorous event!

.

I just knew that her wedding cakes were going to be to die for.  And she certainly did not disappoint.  These cakes aren’t just packed full of fruit and marzipan – they have bags of personality too!  Following an exclusive fondant fashion shoot  styled by Cat Hepple Photography at The Mansion in Roundhay Park, I give you The Whimsical Cake Company.

.

Be quick Brides Up North, with sugar this pretty I know that Skye’s services are going to be in very high demand.  Amen to amazing Northern Talent!

Skye says: I started The Whimsical Cake Company after baking cakes for family and friends and people were always telling me I should start a business.  Going right to the start, one day my daughter asked if we could make some butterfly buns.  Surely every mum knows how to make these?!  Well i didn’t.  Wanting to be Super Mum I ran out and bought a cupcake book.  I then became hooked on baking and began travelling to London to improve my skills. After learning the basics I am proud to say that I am self taught.

.

At present I bake from home as my children are still young and starting any business takes all of your time and energy. I have a long term plan to open something exciting in the future… so watch this space!

I love having the initial enquiry from a bride and groom and expanding on their idea to make an amazing cake. I think when a customer sees their cake for the first time they should say “Wow!” – and I’d be disappointed if they didn’t!

I can make any type of cake, although I specialize in and love designing balancing cakes, topsy turvy cakes and 3D cakes. Cakes should be fun and I find that a lot of my brides want something different. I actually get a lot of orders for Alice in Wonderland themed weddings.  I make all different flavours although Death by Chocolate seems to be a wedding favourite.

I also make Groom’s cakes, an idea which originated from America. A bride will ask me to make a surprise cake in the design of the groom’s favourite football stadium or even their dog!  Dog cakes are becoming very popular!

Depending on the design of a wedding cake or if the cake is a gravity defying cake, a wedding cake will take between three and four days to complete. A lot of my brides will also order matching favours to compliment their wedding cake.

More and more brides are choosing cake pops as an alternative to a wedding cake. I display these on a cake pop tower which looks stunning at the venue and guests can help themselves.

If i could go back and make my wedding cake I would have a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party cake, gravity defying with lots of unusual angles with the Mad Hatter sitting on the top. I would make each layer in different flavours and probably without a fruit cake as many brides are opting out of this.

.

I would have candy centre pieces where people could help themselves with lots and lots of props. I am looking to renew my vows just so i can design my reception with all the ideas I have floating around my head as it is constantly filled with candy canes, cakes and all things nice!

I would love to make a cake for Elton John (can you imagine the cake he would have)!  I would make him a huge white whimsical cake, with wired butterflies coming out of simple white roses… but HUGE!

My cakes start at £280 for a simple three tier sponge cake although prices depend on the style of cake and details.  Brides should place their order within three months of their wedding, although some people place their booking earlier and decide on the style of cake at a later date.
