queen of hearts. an alice in wonderland themed wedding at iscoyd park – roxanne & shane

November 14th, 2017 | Julia Braime

An Alice In Wonderland Wedding at Iscoyd Park (c) Elsie Love Photography (58)

As Lewis Carol fans ourselves here at Brides Up North HQ, we quickly fell head over heels (and down the rabbit hole) when viewing images from Roxanne and Shane’s beautiful big day, inspired by the author’s most notable novel.

Brining in lots of “eat me” and “drink me” elements, plus Wonderland style décor and a beautifully on-theme cake, we’d say the couple did an excellent job of incorporating nods to Alice, while still making their celebrations both romantic and personal.

The fine backdrop of Iscoyd Park, elegant attire and pretty blooms complete the fairy tale feel and have us grinning Cheshire-cat style.

roxanne says: We got engaged on the beach in Cuba. It was the second night of our first holiday together.

We got married on 22nd October 2016. We picked this date as it meant we would have the same anniversary as Shane’s parents.

Our chosen venue was Iscoyd Park in Wrexham, North Wales. It meant a lot to Shane as this is the area where he had grown up and, so he always wanted to marry in the area too. We had 80 guests for the day and 130 for the night. We chose Iscoyd Park as we both fell in love with the beautiful Georgian house and its exclusivity. It also had 5-star reviews.

Inspiration for the theme was taken from Lewis Carol’s Through the Looking Glass – I’ve loved Lewis Carol since I was little, and Alice in Wonderland is my happy place!

We picked green for the colour scheme as it’s my favourite colour and we felt that it was complement the theme too.

I ordered my wedding dress online – it was the closest I could find to the style I liked.

My bridesmaids wore green floor-length dresses, which I also found online.

Shane and the groomsmen wore dark blue suits from Groom in Chester.

through the looking glass: an alice in wonderland wedding shoot

April 9th, 2015 | Rachel Parry

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (11)

This year marks the 150th anniversary of one of my all-time favourite fairy tales – Lewis Carrolls’ alice in wonderland.

The weird and wonderful story featuring a talking White Rabbit, Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter and feisty Queen of Hearts is so far off the wall some questioned whether Carroll was actually high when he put pen to paper. I just like to think he had an amazing imagination and in doing so gave us a magical tale that will live on for many more years to come.

My fascination with Alice makes it easy to understand why I immediately fell head over heels myself (narrowly avoiding the rabbit hole) when this captivating styled shoot landed in the Brides Up North inbox.

Put together by a talented Yorkshire collective of wedding industry suppliers and shot by our fabulous blog sponsor Sarah of Sarah Beth Photography, this Alice in Wonderland wedding shoot combines enchanting blooms, whimsical styling and gorgeous rustic décor to create one marvellous tea party.

So let’s pull up a pew and join Sarah as she takes us through the looking glass…

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (28)

sarah says: I first met Shannon of Evelyn Taylor Bridal, based in Holmfirth, Yorkshire, in 2013 when I photographed her wedding to husband James. Ever since that point we have stayed friends and now work closely together on various projects, which includes organising a photo shoot every season to produce new imagery for her bridal shop – and also to work with new and exciting local suppliers.

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (4)

Shannon approached me this time with the idea of a tea party themed shoot as she wanted to celebrate the first birthday of the opening of Evelyn Taylor Bridal. Our inspiration was taken from the classic fairy tale Alice in Wonderland. We wanted to set the shoot in a forest or woodland area imaging Alice was lost, looking for the Mad Hatter’s tea party.

We were inspired by rustic styling influenced by nature and old antique curios. We used two girls in our shoot wearing two dresses both available to buy at Evelyn Taylor Bridal, which sells beautiful off the peg dresses from many well-known designers and also has a large choice of bridal accessories, including stunning headpieces from Ophelia May. Shannon works closely with her in-house seamstress to ensure a bride’s chosen dress fits perfectly.

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (31)

The styling for our shoot was supplied by Sophie Bennett of Weddings by Sophie, who organises weddings at Oaklands, a unique wedding venue set in the largest woodland in East Yorkshire. Here Sophie works alongside couples to create entirely bespoke, beautiful weddings individual to them, from festival celebrations to Moroccan feasts, she ensures the venue is dressed to perfection.

Along with styling by Sophie, we also handmade some of the items, such as the wooden signpost. We used old glass bottles and moss to decorate our table along with old curios, such as antique pocket watches. The Oaklands, which is spread over 200 acres of grass glades and lakes, was the ideal location for the theme of our shoot with its surrounding woodland proving a wonderful backdrop that complemented our vision perfectly.

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (1)

Oliver from Oliver James Sugar Craft Creations made a selection of sweet treats to adorn the table including flapjack, cupcakes and shortbread along with a chocolate cake coated with ganache to give a bark like finish to fit in with the woodland rustic theme. Based in Holmfirth, Oliver specialises in bespoke wedding cakes designed and created to suit the bride and groom’s dream cake for their big day. Oliver prides himself on the taste of his hand-baked cakes as well as a flawless finish – which is clearly demonstrated in the shoot.

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (22)

Amy and her assistant Unity from Bows salon based in Anlaby, Hull, created a whimsical look for our models with pretty undone hair and subtle make-up, including smouldering eyes and lips to suit the girls’ colours and complexions. Bows is a young vibrant company specialising in hair and beauty for any occasion, creating on-trend and inspiring looks. We were certainly pleased with their work on the day.

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (15)

The wonderful flowers were provided by Stems Design who specialise in wedding floristry and offer a bespoke service to make a wedding truly magical. Stems pride themselves on a friendly and professional service designed specifically around the individual.

The girls wore dresses from Evelyn Taylor bridal. Our model Casey wore the short blush pink dress by House of Mooshki and Sarah modelled a beautiful lace gown by Intuzuri. Their shoes are by Custom Kicks Shoe Design. Originally based in the UK and now Western Australia, Custom Kicks believe every girl deserves a unique pair of ‘kicks’ for any occasion. They hand design all shoes in any design a girl desires!

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (29)

We weren’t blessed with the best weather on the shoot, fluctuating between snow and sun throughout the cold March day. Our models however were very brave and withstood the cold! We had planned for more elaborate styling for our shoot but unfortunately the fluctuating weather conditions affected the amount of styling we could do outdoors.

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (9)

That said, we are really happy with the outcome of our shoot. The aim was to have fun and create some interesting imagery to accompany the first anniversary of Evelyn Taylor, which I think it’s safe to say we achieved. It was an absolute joy working with all the suppliers involved and I’m sure there will be more to come.

Evelyn Taylor Bridal - Woodland Shoot (c) Sarah Beth Photography (10)

Sarah of Sarah Beth Photography is based in Hull, East Yorkshire, and specialises in alternative and natural wedding photography. She aims to document a couple’s big day exactly as it happens creating beautiful natural imagery for brides and grooms to remember and treasure for years to come.

Sarah will be attending the Brides Up North luxury wedding fair this Sunday at Nostell Priory and will be offering 15 discount vouchers  on the day entitling recipients to a massive £100 off her wedding photography services.

Evelyn Taylor Bridal will also be attending our Nostell Priory event, which will be held between 11am and 3pm. Click here to register.

Through The Vintage Looking Glass! A Styled Bridal Shoot In The North West

May 19th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

What better way to start Saturday than a beautiful and quirky styled wedding inspiration shoot with more than a hint of Alice In Wonderland theme and sent to me by Sarah of Vintage Wonderland?  I’m not usually a fan of too much fiddling with colour in photographs, but the team use various methods to great effect here to add drama and ethereal quality to the set.  Love it.

Sarah of Vintage Wonderland says: The photographs were taken in and around the grounds of Croxteth Hall in Liverpool on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon in April. I had been wanting to create something special that would truly encompass the spirit and ethos of Vintage Wonderland whilst also allowing myself to indulge in my own personal delights; the fashion, culture and elegance of classic times.

Whilst keeping the classic theme in mind I wanted to extend the shoot to include some of my more quirky ideas, and to meet the demand of the ever popular Alice in Wonderland theme. Both the models and Kate had a good feel for what we were trying to achieve so simply allowed themselves to be part of the moment, and I think we captured everything just right.

The shoot was demanding as we only had a short time to set up, get the models prepared, and get the shots we wanted. Croxteth Hall was open to the public the whole time we were there, so we can only imagine what the onlookers must have been thinking when we were hanging tea cups from the trees; we had some funny looks. The staff at Croxteth Hall were fantastic and gave us pretty much full access to the hall, and even gave us a room specifically for make up and costume changes; the models felt like stars for the day. We were so impressed with the volunteers at the hall we even featured them in some of the photographs.

At Vintage Wonderland we really want people to see that we can style something special for their wedding. Whether it is a sophisticated ‘High Tea’ look for a wedding breakfast, recreating a bygone ere for their room layout, or adding a touch of nostalgia to their photographs; the Bride and Groom should know we are there to help them make the best of their special day.

With regards to the future for Vintage Wonderland? Well the ideas just keep on coming; so I will be constantly on the lookout for new props & crockery, new locations, and new future Brides and Grooms so I can continue doing what I love; showing off our beautiful crockery in such elegant surroundings.

Wedding Blog Fashion Exclusive: What Katy Did Next? She Named Couture After Meeee!

February 7th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Sally Thurrell Photography/ What Katy Did Next

Julia

.

.

OMG OMG OMG I am all of a flutter!  Not only to I have a wedding blog fashion exclusive to share with you this morning that is possibly one of the most well executed bridal inspiration shoots that I have seen yet (and trust me, I see A LOT!), but one of the fabulous stars of the show is actually named after me!

.

And it isn’t a coincidence!

.

When the lovely Katy of What Katy Did Next got in touch to tell me that she had named a piece in her new collection after me, I was super excited.  Then I saw the “Julia” (above – far too beautiful and refined to have my name attached to it – I’m writing this in joggers and a hoody at 1am!) and was out of this world excited.  And then I saw these images.

.

Floored.

.

If you are planning a vintage/ Alice themed/ onehelluvagorgeous wedding… take note.  Oh, and p.s: who doesn’t have a total girl crush on Alice right now?!

.

.

.

Lets hear from the lady herself: After itching to get creative with styling another photo shoot, one of my Real Brides from the Summer got in touch to tell me about her vintage china & prop hire venture.  My fiancé and I designed and built Lynsey’s website for her and thought it only right to celebrate with a photo shoot.  It may sound clichéd but with the Vintage china and tea party vibe, it felt only right to have a go at the Alice in Wonderland theme.  Our idea was to keep it timeless, pastel and vintage themed without sinking in to the overdone slightly cheesy style.

With the theme in mind I was able to work on something a little more extravagant and flouncy in my collection. I had had a few Mother of the Bride’s approach me at wedding fairs enquiring about fascinators, so I used this opportunity to showcase some of my ideas. I wanted the collection to be primarily influenced by a demure, Victorian style ‘Alice’ whilst reflecting the fun of the book with a little twist, which is where the idea to use another model and flip the idea of a male white rabbit to make it glamorous, flirty and fun.

After getting a few other amazing suppliers involved I managed to find a little gem of a venue in Riding Farm Cottages. The cottages were in a little cluster not too far from Beamish and surrounded by peaceful countryside. The early January weather was slightly windy and wild for our shoot so we made the most of the beautiful country style that the cottages had.

The shoot was amazing fun, despite the Wintery weather and the fact that our photographer’s car broke down, conked out and died on the way there! It was great to work with so many talented suppliers from up and down the UK, including our two gorgeous models Nathalie and Katie. I would thoroughly recommend each and every one of them.
