February 17th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Madeline

I’m starting the week with something simply gorgeous (hey, isn’t that how we always start the week here at Brides Up North) and introducing another of my super creative Featured Suppliers – Jenny of bespoke accessories brand Ophelia May.  I’ve had the privilege of seeing and trying Jenny’s beautiful collection at one of our Brides Up North luxury events and let me tell you, these pieces are even more delicate and delectable in real life than on these pretty pages.

And the cherry on top?  Ophelia May is also offering Brides Up North readers an exclusive 15% discount on all orders placed by midnight on 16th March 2014 using the code BUNweb15.  If I were you, I’d hightailing it over to Jenny’s online shop right now, before the rest get there first.

In the meantime, let’s say hello…

Georgina Shellard for Ophelia May

Roselyn

Tell us about Ophelia May and how it all began?

Ophelia May offers beautiful vintage inspired bridal accessories and hair adornments. Each piece is individually handcrafted, with delicate embroidery and embellished with scatterings of Swarovski crystals, tiny pearls and seed beads. The collections are designed using beautiful silks, Scottish lace and vintage bits, to produce a unique selection of intricate head pieces and bridal sashes.

I have always had a particular interest in bygone eras and find that this often translates into my work sometimes even unintentionally. I am forever collecting vintage fabrics, jewellery, beads and pearls as well as fragments of antique lace. Not only do these inspire me to create beautiful pieces but they can also be incorporated into the designs, ensuring no two pieces will ever be quite the same.

Following my degree in Textile Crafts, where I specialised in Embroidery, I did a placement with a bridal designer in London. I then went on to work in the fashion industry as a designer but I always missed the creativity of designing for the bridal market so I jumped at the chance to set up my own company. I hope brides will get as much pleasure wearing my pieces as I get from creating them!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I find inspiration in so many things – film, nature, vintage magazines and fashion, both modern and historical. I love seeing the latest collections from bridal gown designers and making pieces that compliment their designs.

Also, my inspiration often comes from the materials I use, whether it’s a vintage brooch or a delicate fragment of lace from a vintage dress. I love to look around charity shops, vintage fairs and antique markets. London’s Portobello Road is a great place to delve into, as it is full of bric-a-brac, antiques and beautiful vintage finds, perfect for sparking ideas.

What bridal accessory trends have been popular in 2013 and what trends do you see emerging in 2014 and beyond?

The vintage trend remained popular throughout 2013, particularly the Twenties and Thirties, with the release of period dramas in film and television such as The Great Gatsby and Downton Abbey and I think this will continue into 2014. Headbands and smaller hair adornments will continue to emerge, with intricate embellishments, lace and plenty of sparkle to reflect the decadence of the Jazz Age.

There is also an emphasis on Nature in the 2014 trends, with floral details and embroidery appearing on headpieces and bridal sashes. Oversized silk flowers and hints of colour will add a dramatic statement for any bride wanting to create the perfect boho look.

What can Brides Up North expect when they use your service?

I am very passionate about every piece I make. All the designs are individually and completely handmade in the studio. Each petal is hand cut and shaped, all embellishments and embroidery are delicately done by hand and all elements are carefully hand-sewn together to produce a truly unique product of the highest quality for every bride.

What is your current favourite piece and why?

I love all the pieces in the collection, but the Annalise lace bridal halo is a personal favourite as it’s so versatile. It can be worn across the forehead, as a normal headband and it looks stunning worn at the back to compliment a gorgeous up-do. With its intricate array of crystals and beading, it will add a touch of sparkly vintage glamour to your special day!

Tell us about your bespoke service?

Our bespoke service is for those brides looking for the perfect accessory to complete their bridal outfit but who can’t find seem to find it. Every piece can be fully customised to suit each bride. If you love an existing design and would like something similar, then fabric, accents and colours can be altered. Or maybe you would like a combination of two designs?

I can also create something completely new and unique, handmade just for you to match your theme or your dress. Any cut offs or spare lace from your wedding dress can be used for a bridal sash or even incorporated into a hair accessory.

Do you make pieces that would be appropriate for Bridesmaids?

Several of the smaller pieces would be perfect for bridesmaids, such as the Rose hair clip or the Nellie hair pins. These can be made in a variety of colours to match the bridesmaids’ dresses.

Can brides incorporate their sentimental jewellery into a piece?

Yes, absolutely. Family heirlooms or treasured jewellery can be incorporated into your design, creating a unique keepsake for future generations. I love to create pieces this way, as these special objects have a history of their own and have the ability to evoke strong emotional sentiments, making them truly personal to the bride.

.

.

“My ethos is to provide good value, choice, high-quality and affordable products in beautiful packaging. I handpick and hand make the items I sell and you can be assured of a personal and flexible service.”

.

.

Why did you decide to launch Sweetheart Vintage and what is your background?

.

Before I launched Sweetheart Vintage I was a make-up artist, mainly focussing on weddings. I really enjoyed the build-up and excitement of each wedding day and being involved with the bride’s appearance, which for many brides is a key aspect of the day. After starting a family, the working hours became more difficult as it was heavily based around evenings and weekends so I decided to launch my business in bridal hair accessories and jewellery. I have always had a love of vintage jewellery and this allows me to stay in the industry I love, use my creativity and be still involved with each bride’s look whilst having more flexible working hours. I also have a strong commercial background as I have worked in marketing and business for the past 12 years for a global organisation which is really useful experience in the everyday running of my business.

.

.

Sweetheart Vintage

.

.

Are all your products designed and handmade by you?

.

Many of my items are handmade but I try to retain a mixture of products so that there is a range of price points for customers – for example my  Treasured hair comb is £22. I am very particular about the quality of products I stock. For all my handmade items, I spend a lot of time researching components for designs and putting new designs together before I launch them. My items are a mixture of original vintage and vintage-inspired, again to give brides choice and to fit a range of budgets, and tastes.

.

.

Can you do bespoke or special designs for individual brides?

.

Yes, my customisation service is extremely popular with brides. It allows customers to adapt products that they see on my website or create something completely new. My customisation service is low-cost and I still allows brides to return custom products as I feel it is only fair to allow return of products that have not been seen or tried on in person. I do charge a small cancellation fee for return of some custom products that are very time consuming to make but for most items there isn’t any charge.

.

“I just wanted to say thank you for all your help with the bracelet, and also how absolutely lovely the products are that I ordered. The simple pearl necklace will look lovely with my vintage lace wedding dress, and the bracelet will complement it perfectly. I’m amazed at the workmanship that has gone into the hair comb and can’t wait to wear it as an alternative to the usual tiara on my wedding day. “

.

.

What are the benefits of buying online?

.

Buying online from Sweetheart Vintage enables brides to have a lot more choice and also to find much more competitively priced products whilst still having a flexible and personal service.

.

.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

.

I aim to keep my prices as competitive as possible. My combs start from £22 and my headbands start from £55. My customisation service is very competitive and I have customised my products from as little as £5. Depending on the type of customisation, sometimes there is no charge.

.

.

Sweetheart Vintage: Crystal Rose Comb and Anita Earrings

Crystal Rose Comb £42, Anita Earrings £29

.

.

Can you do a discount for Brides Up North readers?

.

The 10% discount code for Brides Up North readers is BUN12 and is valid until 31st December 2012. There is no minimum order and the code can only be used in our online store.

.

.

What can Brides Up North expect when they use your service?

.

Brides can expect a personal, friendly and flexible service. I pride myself of providing high-quality products at affordable prices with plenty of choice. Wherever possible I try my best to meet any tight timescales.

.

.

What is your current favourite piece that you have designed and why?

.

My Vintage Glamour Headband is one of my favourite pieces. It is popular with brides and recently I customised this one for a bride by dotting it with Swarovski pearls at no extra charge. Many brides are put off purchasing headbands after trying on uncomfortable ones but I am always reassuring brides that all my headbands are really comfortable and do not pinch at all.

.

.

Sweetheart Vintage Vintage Glamour Headband

Vintage Glamour Headband £82

.

.

Is there a particular style of jewellery or bridal accessory that has been immediately popular with your bridal customers?

.

My combs are always very popular and the Enchanted Comb has proven to be a hit. At the price of £40 its very reasonable for a handmade comb. It is very simple yet elegant with a vintage feel.

.

Sweetheart Vintage Enchanted Comb

Enchanted Comb

.

.

Do you design and stock pieces that would be appropriate for Bridesmaids?

.

Many of my customers purchase combs as gifts for their bridesmaids and all my items come gift boxed. I also provide free gift notes at the customer’s request. Many brides purchase different styles of combs for each bridesmaid and I really love the fact that people don’t feel restricted to make all their bridesmaids look the same. Giving each bridesmaid a different piece allows you to give them something personal to them and also to suit their hair type and style.

.

.

Sweetheart Vintage

Gift boxed product with a gift note

.

.

What about the Mother of The Bride?

.

My handmade bracelets and earrings have been very popular for the Mother of the Bride as well as bridesmaids. Original vintage bracelets and earrings have also been popular for Mother of the Bride gifts.

.

.

Sweetheart Vintage

Handmade Swarovski Bracelet £35

.

.

How are your products packaged?  Do they make good gifts?

.

My products make perfect gifts as they all come individually boxed and free gift notes can be requested. Recently I have sold a bracelet that was used as part of a proposal, Valentine’s gifts and gifts for Mother’s Day. I provide luxury gift wrap at £3.00 per item and recently received this feedback from a happy bride

.

Just a wee note to express my sincere thank you for the beautiful package I received. First of all the pins are stunning, so elegant and superb quality, but second of all, I am absolutely stunned at how beautifully the two gift wrapped ones came. They are amazing and will be so special to give to the girls on the morning of the wedding! I will be recommending you to everyone I know from now on!

It’s Just A Little Blush! A Styled Bridal Shoot From Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

October 31st, 2012 | Julia Braime

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

Anais Lace Headpiece £150

Today’s absolutely stunning styled bridal shoot comes to us courtesy of the lovely Nicola at Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe, a fabulous Brides Up North Featured Supplier who is keen (and rightly so!) to share her stunning new blush collection with you.  I’m excited to announce an exclusive Brides Up North discount with Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe coming soon in the New Year, but for now, with images from my lovely friend Katy Lunsford Photography, lets enjoy one last moment in the sun, with Nicola’s exquisite, keep-sake bridal designs.

Swoon.

.

The softest chiffon florals, intricate yet delicate beadwork and romantic sheer edging whisper the arrival of Blush, the third collection from vintage inspired bridal accessories designer, Silver Sixpence in her Shoe.

.

Each beautifully hand-crafted accessory nods to the elegance of decades past and yet is the definition of modern bridal adornment, as much inspired by designer Nicola Wellard’s recent travels in Europe and beyond as they are by the romance of a bygone era.

Additionally, several of the collections’ headpieces can be worn with a variety of different hairstyles and with or without a veil, providing a solution to a common concern for brides who purchase their accessories before finalising their overall big day look.

The Cherry On Top! Supplier Showcase: Bridal Headpieces by HT Headwear PLUS 20% Discount From Elizabeth Lois Photography

January 19th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

This morning I am waking up in the smoke yet again (cough!), after an evening mixing with the wedding industry’s finest at The Wedding Industry Awards.  I wore vintage Cacharel (get me!), drank cocktails, schmoozed a bit, caught up with some of my favourite industry friends and stayed up late (too late).  As you read this, I’m heading back Up North – where the heart is – to take a break from my high heels and get stuck into an exciting new project for Brides Up North that has me just a little bit giddy.  More info shortly.

.

In the meantime – let the fabulousness continue!  Today’s stunning bridal headpieces shoot was shot by Elizabeth Lois Photography for Brides Up North Featured Supplier HT Headwear, one of the lovely ladies I was celebrating with last night.  If you are looking for something unique and adventurous that no one else has, a chic fascinator or birdcage veil is increasingly an option for the style conscious bride, and this collection is just lovely.  With a capital L.

Belinda £85 – Birdcage veil with diamante detail on fine covered headband

Let’s hear from Helena of HT Headwear: My inspiration for this collection came from long hazy summer evenings in the garden, eating outside and gazing at the soft petals falling from our rose bush, whilst the last of the sun dropped down between the houses…

A Brides Up North Winner Wears It Well! Sophie Rocks Rosie Willett Designs

November 7th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

I do love to see my wedding blog competition winners enjoying their treasure! Sophie Dias recently won a gorgeous Eleanor headpiece from Rosie Willett Designs in a Brides Up North wedding blog giveaway, the lucky thing!  Doesn’t she look amazing!?

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Rosie Willett Designs

.

.

Rosie says:  Sophie chose the Georgina headpiece as the French lace flower and silk organza complemented the lace on her Augusta Jones gown so well.  Sophie didn’t want a traditional tiara, so the stylish Georgina was perfect for her.  Sophie told me that she fell in love with so many of my designs when she tried them on with one of my stockists.  When she saw the competition to win a Rosie Willett Designs headpiece on Brides Up North, she decided to try her luck at winning a second one… and she won!  Sophie chose the fashionable polka dot Eleanor headpiece to wear for her evening reception.

.

.

Sophie says:  I didn’t know what I wanted as a wedding headpiece at first as I was adamant I didn’t want a traditional tiara.  When I first saw Rosie’s work I was in love and really didn’t want to have to take the sample headpiece off to leave the shop!  I would still wear my lovely Georgina to work everyday if I could!

.

Everyone on the day said how unusual and beautiful it was and lots of people commented on how perfectly it matched the lace on my dress.  I was also lucky enough to win a second headpiece from Rosie through a competition with Brides Up North wedding blog.  I have enjoyed wearing Georgina and Eleanor to a number of parties and outings since, as they are both so fashionable.  I hope one day to add some coloured pieces to my collection!

.

Thank you so much for providing the perfect finishing touch on my wedding day.

.

Rosie runs an ‘In The Spotlight’ feature on her website showcasing one of her lovely brides every month.  She explains: I receive many photographs from happy brides who want to show me how gorgeous they look in their headpieces.  It’s always a pleasure for me to see my designs on new brides and it’s really interesting to see how they can look with different styling.  The same design might look romantic and whimsical on a bride with loose tumbling curls, or classic and elegant on a bride with a sleek up do.  My designs have been worn with the most beautiful wedding dresses, including designs by Sassi Holford, Suzanne Neville, Lyn Ashworth, Lusan Mandongus and Charlotte Balbier.

Jeanie

October 12, 2011 | Wowza these are some seriously pretty items Rebecca! I would LOVE to win this headband as not only would it go perfectly with my wedding dress, it fits perfectly with the pearl bracelet I have inherited! Can’t wear a necklace with my dress as the lace neckline is too high… so this would be perfect!  Also, we have spent all our budget on having all of our family and friends joining us so can’t really afford treats for ourselves! Fingers crossed! Jx

Twinkle Twinkle! Supplier Showcase: Damselle Tiaras (and a 10% DISCOUNT!)

August 15th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Every day feels like Christmas at wedding blog HQ at the moment, with all these sparkly wedding treasures scattered around my laptop!  Today I chat to the lovely Kathryn from online bridal accessories shop Damselle Tiaras about her gorgeous headpieces.  PLUS watch out for a very special giveaway from celebrated Damselle Tiaras’ designer Polly Edwards coming up later on today!

.

.

How did Damselle Tiaras begin?

.

The concept of Damselle Tiaras started at the British Bridal Exhibition in Harrogate in 2004.  My husband and I wanted to start a small online business and as both our daughters were getting married we decided upon tiaras and accessories. After attending numerous wedding fairs and exhibitions we thought that this would be easy!  Big joke!  I had a lot of support and advice from Kirstie at Flo and Percy who gave me lots of encouragement.

.

What products are available to order on the Damselle Tiaras website?

.

The products available are tiaras, belts, sashes, millinery and jewellery.  Our best sellers are Polly Edwards, Ivory and Co and Louis Mariette.

.

Both Polly Edwards and Louis Mariette designs are hand made in the UK.

.

Tell Brides Up North about your range of hats and fascinators?

.

Our daughter Melissa was lucky enough to be able to train in millinery in Leeds, our hometown, at the Leeds College of Art and Design and takes her inspiration mainly from the 1940’s and 1950’s at the moment and uses best quality materials and everything is handmade by herself. Melissa loves to work with her customers to create and capture the style and design that they want.

.

Which of your products would you recommend for a bride on a budget?

.

For a bride on a budget Ivory and Co have a fabulous range that can look very expensive and prices start at approximately £50.00 whereas if money is not an option and the bride to be wants to splash out then there are pieces like Patchouli by Polly Edwards at £795.

What sets your website apart from other online bridal retailers?

.

I think that there is so much competition these days both in store and online but I believe that giving the best service that you can possibly offer, staying in contact with the bride to be, reassuring and assuring her that everything is going to plan and treating your customer as you would like to be treated yourself and I don’t think that you can go wrong with that. Everyone wants to be treated just that little bit special and lets not forget that we are working with someone who is getting married who is getting stressed out and my job is to ensure that they receive the tiara/headpiece of their dreams in plenty of time for their fittings and their big day.

.

Which celebrity would you like to see in a Damselle Tiaras piece and why?

.

I think that every bride to be feels like a celebrity on her wedding day but if I had to choose a celebrity today to wear a tiara I think that I would choose Grace Woodward as she has her finger on the pulse of fashion but has a quirky side so think that she would carry off something by Louis Mariette wonderfully well.

.

How far in advance should Brides Up North place their order?

.

The timescales for ordering would be dependant on the designer. Ivory and Co can be dispatched within 48 hours whereas others can be anything between 4 to 6 weeks although Polly Edwards does offer a fast track service.
