a labour of love: stella york for a rustic wedding at thief hall – emma & martin

July 27th, 2018 | Alexis Forsyth

Hearts and flowers is the overarching theme for today’s beautiful barn wedding, and we couldn’t imagine a more romantic combination! After exchanging vows at the magnificent Ripon Cathedral, Emma and Martin celebrated with loved ones at the stunning Thief Hall – an exclusive countryside venue in North Yorkshire. In keeping with the rustic theme, the venue was chock full of bunting, garden jugs, jars, pretty fairy lighting, a wooden pallet and pegged pictures aplenty.

Mixing things up a little (would we expect anything else?!) the couple opted for an afternoon tea instead of a traditional wedding breakfast, and in the evening, served up artisan pizzas from a street-food-style van named Hettie, no less.

Keen to find out more? Us too. We think it’s time we pass the blog over to Emma to reveal all the fabulous details…

emma says: We got engaged on my birthday two years ago. I was feeling a bit down as it was my last Friday off before going back to teaching full-time again. We were just about to leave the house to go out for tea with our two children but when I walked into the living room I found Martin down on one knee with our children watching. It was perfect as they were involved too.  I had the biggest grin on my face for days!

As I’m a teacher, we needed to choose a wedding date during the school holidays so that we could have time before to prepare and some time after the wedding to go away for a few days. We chose Saturday 7th April as it was the middle weekend of the Easter holidays and we love spring.

We got married in Ripon Cathedral which is the most stunning building. We were lucky enough to have our children christened there and wanted to get married there too. After the ceremony we had our reception at Thief Hall, near Northallerton, which is just gorgeous. We wanted a barn venue where we could have a more relaxed reception and plenty of outdoor space for the kids to run around. It ticked all the boxes for us!

Our theme was quite rustic with us having a barn venue. After lots of pins on Pinterest, our theme evolved into ‘hearts and flowers’ with lots of bunting and hessian decorations. I really wanted to decorate the hall ourselves, so it was definitely a labour of love.

In terms of a colour scheme – Martin really wanted a navy suit with tan brogues and after lots of searching on the internet we also decided to have navy for the bridesmaids too.

I chose a fit and flare Stella York gown with an illusion back from Abigail’s Bridal Boutique in Leeds. After a couple of unsuccessful appointments, I really wasn’t sure what I wanted and what suited me. Margaret at Abigail’s was absolutely brilliant, and I tried on lots of different styles. As soon as I tried my dress on, I could picture myself walking down the aisle and knew it was the one! I chose to wear a lace edged Cathedral length veil and shoes by Miss KG.

Martin chose a navy suit from Next with a silver tie and the rest of the groomsmen wore the same suit but with a navy tie. He wore tan brogues from River Island.

A Real Wedding In Yorkshire by Richard Wynn Davies

Nothing like a stunning castle wedding in the Yorkshire Dales to round off another wonderful week of wedding inspiration here at Brides Up North.  With words by real bride Hannah and a stunning set of images from Brides Up North Featured Supplier, Richard Wynn Davies, this is one for the romantics!

Hannah says:  Mark asked me to marry him on 7 April 2011, on a bike ride over Threshfield moor above Grassington, and we were married on 2 June 2012 at St Oswald’s Church, Askrigg followed by a reception at Bolton Castle, Wensleydale.

We chose both venues for the character, the fact that it was a place that we visited often and both loved and for the gorgeous views and that there was plenty for the guests to explore on the day.  We chose a colour scheme of aubergine and ivory.

We spent the morning getting ready and my make up was done by Jo Leversuch of Make Up By Jo.

The best bit of the whole day for me was the church service and saying our vows. We also very much enjoyed the dancing in the evening!

We don’t like fruit cake so we had a three tier sponge cake with chocolate, lemon and plain flavourings.

We had a ceilidh band in the evening and all the guests were taught various traditional dances.

After the wedding we honeymooned in Thailand for 16 days travelling to Bangkok, Chaing Mai and Koh Phangnan.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to relax on the day and enjoy the getting ready process. There’s no point stressing over last minute things at that stage, just enjoy it!

We Make Rainbows! A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Olivia & Jon

August 23rd, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

A Real Wedding in Yorkshire by Anna Louise Crossley

.

.

Is it raining where you are?  Yeah, me too.  Those pesky Southerners, thinking they know it all about weddings (we know better!) and now hogging the sunshine too?!

.

Anyway, we don’t care!  If it rains on our parade, we just do it in style – as proved nicely by today’s real bride Olivia and her wet and wonderful race day wedding captured by Anna Louise Crossley.  Olivia made sure that her big day was so bright, colourful and packed with personal touches that when it rained, she made rainbows.

.

…and sourced her wedding using entirely local suppliers.  Good girl!

.

I love this.  Enjoy.

Olivia says:  We got engaged at home in October 2011. Jon asked me when he got home from work. I had the day off and was watching the news, drinking tea and eating Jaffa Cakes.  We were married on

June 30th 2012 at Holy Trinity, Ripon then afterwards at Ripon Racecourse

We are both sporty, we like racing and we wanted somewhere different for our wedding. Most of our friends and family weddings have been at stately homes or hotels and we fancied something quirkier. We also wanted lots of outdoor space for children.

The wedding had a vague newspaper theme because we are both journalists and met each other while we worked at rival papers in East Anglia, with a colour base of sea green, turquoise and pink.

I chose 1950s style tea length wedding dress with a full skirt and halter neck, from Carlton Couture in Ripon. It was quite a simple and plain design  (I am a tomboy you see!!)  I also had a little jacket with collar which stood up and a bird cage head dress. We wanted to keep everything as local as possible to help businesses in Ripon. {Editor’s note: hear hear!}

.

My bridesmaids wore turquoise/sea green dresses from a shop in Florida – it’s the only thing we bought outside North Yorkshire!

I walked down the aisle carrying a beautiful bouquet of peach, pink and white roses, sweet peas and hydrangeas by Twisted Willow Floristry, who also provided the flowers for my bridesmaids and the wedding reception.

The ceremony was so brilliant. I couldn’t stop grinning. When we got to the altar Jon told me he had written L and R on the soles of his shoes – but the wrong way round, that’s what he’s like.

.

The vicar Rev. Isaac Lawrence was quite inexperienced. He is originally from Pakistan and after the marriage part of the ceremony he produced a mirror, which he said was a Pakistani tradition. It was lovely and made a great photo opportunity. This was my favourite part of the day because I had been nervous and it was just so amazing to be surrounded by all our favourite people in the world.

We asked as many people to make things for our wedding as possible. My mum made a banner for above the top table, my father in law created a “newspaper front page” celebrating our wedding. My dad made ceramic hearts for place names and a DVD slideshow of us growing up which was played during the signing of the register. My mother in law made the cake and a lolly tree for the children. My father in law drove us in his car – which should have been convertible except it was raining! – and my sister made our invitations!
