It’s holiday season here on the blog, and as the editorial team take a short break, we’ll be leaving you with a reduced blogging schedule so that you still get your daily dose of wedding lovely. The stars of today’s post, Sara and Ryan, chose to have an entirely black and white wedding album to reflect the beautiful moments of their 1920s style big day.
Their photographer, Stu Ganderton explains: “I give all my clients a full colour version of their images and a limited black and white version. I always edit my black and white differently to the colour set, usually a lot more emotive and edgy. Sara and Ryan chose the albums for the parents in colour, but their album was entirely black and white. They felt it was more arty and creative, different and edgy. It also fits immensely well with the theme of the day. I shot virtually the entire day without interrupting Sara and Ryan’s day, so everything is very natural and all real moments. The only time I intervened was for the night shots right at the very end, and this was literally ten minutes. I find that keeping a couple in their comfort zone generates very real and honest images of their day which have a timeless quality to them.”
And we couldn’t agree more! While Sara and Ryan may look like the lead roles in an old romantic Hollywood movie, there’s nothing contrived about their beautiful big day, it’s both honest and opulent from beginning to end!

sara says: We got engaged on New Year’s Eve in 2014 while we were away in Verona. Ryan had planned a grand proposal in front of the amphitheatre but we ended up getting engaged in the hotel room while in our PJs playing Scrabble!
We set the wedding date for 10th December 2016. We chose this date as we love winter and this would give us enough time to get married and have a honeymoon before Christmas.
We chose the quirky Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield for our wedding venue and were able to have both the ceremony and reception in the same place.
Our theme was 1920s – it’s such a glam era! To work with this styling and also the winter season, we had a black, gold and red colour scheme.
I chose a fitting Maggie Sottero gown for my wedding day attire. It was a sleek design and champagne in colour, which was perfect for the theme.
My bridal hair and makeup was done by Peaches & Preen.

Today on the blog we bring you Hannah and Michael’s special day, at the beautiful five-star Grand Hotel and Spa, in York. The historic city was already close to the couple’s hearts and they were totally won over by the Edwardian venue’s truly romantic backdrop.
Opting for a gorgeous gold, bronze and blush pink colour scheme complemented by an abundance of candles, petals and even pom poms – this is a wedding exuding understated glamour and charm.

hannah says: We got engaged at home, in our living room, on 13th April. Everything was pretty hectic as we were planning a move to the Middle East with Michael’s job. It was just perfect, I was sat playing with our little boy, Archie, and Michael literally gave me the shock of my life as he appeared with a box and got down on one knee to propose. I couldn’t believe it!
We got married on 4th August 2016 – we didn’t want to wait, plus I had always really wanted a summer wedding. With it being last minute, we were limited by dates but after settling on August, this date just seemed right.
Our wedding venue was The Grand Hotel and Spa, in York. We knew the venue had to be in York as it has a lot of special memories for us – from our first date to the birth of our son, as well as it being my hometown. I fell in love with The Grand Hotel from the moment I saw the grand boardroom; the venue’s elegance and history was just perfect.
Our wedding theme was vintage glamour with a touch of romance. I wanted something with class and sophistication, and once we found the venue, I knew that the grand features of the hotel would work perfectly. As for the colour scheme, this focused on gold, bronze and blush pink.
I found my wedding dress at The Little Pearl Bridal Boutique in North Yorkshire. I always knew this would be my starting place, as I know the owner Diana through a close friend. As soon as I stepped into the boutique I knew my dream dress would be in there, somewhere. After trying every different style and fit, I finally found the one – that butterfly feeling was most certainly there! I chose an Enzoani gown in ivory; a vintage style silk and lace embellished dress. It matched the venue and style of the wedding perfectly. I could not recommend Diana and The Little Pearl more. I had the most magical experience from start to finish and felt like a true princess. Diana didn’t miss a detail and would go out of her way to accommodate any request.

Prepare to take note ladies, for this is how an elegant wedding is done!
Opting for a ‘black-tie’ theme, today’s bride and groom Laura and Dominic, wanted a classic wedding that would stand the test of time – and looking at these stunning images, we’d say that’s exactly what they had.
Highlights for us include the romantic lilac colour scheme, Laura’s stunning dress and those gorgeous blooms! Just wow!

laura says: We got engaged in October 2014, it was at home and a total surprise! It was a Saturday night and Dom had cooked a lovely meal and then after dessert he said he had another dessert! I just thought yay! Two desserts! So he went to fetch a little plate with loads of macaroons on (my favourite) and in the middle was a box with a Haribo ring in (we had a running joke that I wanted to get married so much I would even say yes to Haribo), of course I said yes and cried a lot and was quite proudly wearing my Haribo! Then a few minutes later he nipped upstairs and gave me my beautiful ‘real’ engagement ring.
We got married on 16th April 2016. We originally wanted a winter wedding but Dom’s sister lives in Australia and is a teacher so we couldn’t quite fit it in with the dates. That said, I’m so glad we had a spring wedding now, the weather was great, daffodils were in full bloom at the church and even the date itself had a good ring to it.
We got married at St Peter’s Church in Edensor, which is a small village in the Chatsworth estate. Dom and I have visited Chatsworth all our lives and it’s a very special place to us, so it just seemed right!
We had our reception at Hassop Hall, we had been to Hassop for meals on numerous occasions and always loved the ‘old worldly’ vibe. But as soon as we walked into the ballroom, we knew it was perfect for the wedding and nowhere else really seemed to compare!

Today’s real wedding couple are such fans of the north of England that they chose to tie the knot in Sheffield where their family roots lie rather than in the South of France where they currently live.
James and Ruth’s dreamy day says glamour and romance and is captured beautifully by Jon Dennis of S6 Photography – we particularly love the moody countryside shots!
We’re also huge fans of the ladies’ faux fur jackets, Ruth’s gorgeous lace bolero and those incredible blooms!
ruth says: We got engaged in Barcelona in a beautiful hotel called Gran hotel La Florida overlooking Barcelona up on Mount Tibidabo. I had no idea as we had just returned from a trip to Dubai and I thought we were taking a connecting flight back to France (where we live). James had other ideas! It was very romantic with champagne and a stunning suite. He got down on one knee to pop the question and of course, I said yes!
We had a Valentine’s Day wedding. Although we don’t really celebrate it, we didn’t want a long engagement so we decided to take advantage of my work holidays (I work in an international school) and get married during the half term. The date worked, so we booked it!
We were married at Christ Church Gleadless in Sheffield and our reception was held at Whirlowbrook Hall, Whirlow. We chose the church as it is the church where James’ parents and grandparents were married. We chose the reception venue because we loved the setting, grounds and the rooms there. As soon as we visited it we knew it was right because the Whirlowbrook team were so welcoming and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble.
There was no specific theme, although navy blue was the colour of the bridesmaid dresses and boys’ cravats. The flowers and decorations were a little rustic and my dress had a slight vintage feel.
I’d say the colour scheme was navy blue and white. James is a Sheffield Wednesday fan and they are the colours of his team so it worked quite well!
My dress was a simple evening gown with a long sleeved lace bolero jacket over the top. It had a slight train at the back and was an A line shape. I chose it because I wanted something simple and elegant that I wouldn’t struggle to move around in.
James wore the Royal Ascot morning suit from Moss Bros in grey and black with the navy cravat.
The best men wore the same as James and the bridesmaids wore long navy blue evening gowns with lace and beading around the neck line.
I travelled in a Rolls Royce Phantom III Wraith which we hired from Cupid Carriages in Wales Bar.
Jon Dennis from S6 Photography was our photographer and he was just perfect. I would highly recommend him to anyone for their wedding as he is so friendly and professional and the photos he took were stunning.
Jon took us out towards Derbyshire for some photos in the countryside on the day which was a great idea and really added to the photos. It was special because the area was a big part of both mine and James’ childhoods so it felt important to include that in our wedding shots.
I carried a bouquet of seasonal flowers and berries in blues, purples and greens. It had ivy trailing down and a fabulous succulent that we named Stanley! The succulent is now growing in a pot at my sister’s house. The bridesmaids had bouquets of gypsophila and some in the hair too. All of the flowers were provided by the lovely Tracey Campbell of Campbell’s Flowers in Sheffield. She was an absolute dream and I couldn’t have been happier with everything that she created for us.
Tracey also provided the flowers for the centre pieces which were candelabras with a wreath of gypsophila. The top table had a wreath of gypsophila at each end around lots of candles. It was very elegant and simple, exactly what we hoped for. She also proved a beautiful garland to go down the staircase at Whirlowbrook Hall and few extra vases of gypsophila.
Favours were three macaroons in a box. We wanted to have a little nod to our French life so it seemed the perfect choice.
We chose a three tier cake; one tier of chocolate, one of sponge and a top fruit tier. It was made by a wonderful friend called Sarah Axe who makes cakes and just asks for donations to her charity; Memories from Isla which creates memory boxes for grieving parents who have lost babies early on. The cake was delicious and was decorated with white icing and white cake lace with navy ribbons. Tracey the florist added some gypsophila for the top of the cake.
For our wedding meal we went for the Whirlowbrook gala buffet which included lots of delicious meats and salads. A whole poached salmon and lamb. There was also a curry and everything was delicious! We wanted to keep it reasonably informal and allow people a huge choice. We chose a white French wine; Colombard Ugni Blanc, Richelieu and a red Rioja Tempranillo as we used to live in Spain and it’s one of our favourite wines.
We chose a band called Downtown Underground to provide the entertainment who were a soul/funk seven piece band that we found online. They were fantastic and the dance floor was full all night.
We also had a photo booth from Meridian Entertainment which was so much fun and everyone stuck a copy of their photos in a photo album for us so we had a lot of laughs looking at the photos after the wedding.
We would absolutely recommend our venue to other couples. It was beautiful inside and out and the whole day ran smoothly due to the professional team there. We didn’t have to worry about anything from the planning, to the setup, to the running of the day. They took care of everything and were so friendly and fun.
For me my favourite part of the day was saying our vows in front of all of our family and friends. It’s something I will never forget and was so special. James loved having a big party with everyone – we love and watching me walk down the aisle to him!
We went to Budapest and Vienna on our honeymoon. We had tonnes of fun – eating, drinking and exploring the cities. We love city breaks and as we only had a week due to our work commitments it was the perfect ‘mini-moon’. In Budapest we went to the Thermal spas and food markets and did a walking tour. In Vienna we went to beautiful restaurants and took in the sights of the city.
My top tip to other Brides Up North is organise your budget early on and try to stick to it. Invest in a great photographer. On the day, relax! It’s so much fun if you take it as one big party and celebration. The day goes so fast so make the most of every second!

Rena and Yianni’s big and beautiful white wedding celebration, filled with flowers and candles, oozes old Hollywood charm. Their unique and beautiful venue and white on white colour scheme sets the scene perfectly for a day of glamour and elegance (and energetic Greek dancing)…

rena says: We booked a long weekend away to Belgium and Bruges for my birthday and to enjoy the Christmas markets. I didn’t realise that Yianni was planning to propose while we were away. We went out for a romantic meal on the first night and I found it really odd that he wouldn’t give the waiter his coat and thought it was because he didn’t trust them so I did the same thing! I didn’t realise it’s because he had the ring with him. He then asked me to go for a romantic walk around the palace gardens but I opted for chocolate waffles instead and put his plans for a proposal on the first night to an end!
On the second day we took a day trip to Bruges. Yianni asked me to go for a romantic horse and carriage ride but I again opted for waffles instead and ruined his Plan B. We then climbed 400 steps to the top of the Bell tower and Yianni asked me to pose for a photo with him. I didn’t realise he’d set the camera to video mode and before you know it he was down on one knee and had manage to catch the proposal on camera.
We were married on 27 April 2014. Exactly two years from the date we first met.
We wanted to get married in a venue that was unforgettable. The Devonshire Dome reminded us of a piazza and we knew it was the perfect choice for our wedding.
It’s a gorgeous drive up through Derbyshire to Buxton which is such a picturesque place. I knew I wanted an iconic and memorable building for our special day and was keen to avoid using a hotel. There aren’t many places that fit 450 guests for a sit down meal and we were so lucky to find the Dome!
I really wanted a garden wedding full of blossom which is why we picked the Spring date. I also wanted a twist of both Hollywood and Grecian glamour. Not an obvious combination, but it all seemed to come together on the day.
I wanted a classic princess style dress and loved the pearl and diamante detail around the waist and the sweetheart neckline.
Yianni wore a black tuxedo which we bought while shopping in the USA.
My bridesmaids wore nude blush maxi dresses from Lipsy. They all looked stunning. The girls had bouquets of white hydrangeas and I wanted to incorporate that into my bouquet. I wanted a bouquet that was completely rounded so you could see flowers from all angles. I incorporated white roses, stocks, hydrangeas and white berries with stephanotis, provided by Nadia Di Tulio.
We had flowers matching my bouquets on the candleabras and the top table which were also provided by Nadia Di Tulio. We hired in blossom trees and a top table blossom arch from Essential Wedding Hire.
For favours, we gave out mini whisky bottles for the men and crystal heart tea light holders for the ladies.
Cupid Carriages provided a white vintage Rolls Royce for us on the day.
We had a three course meal along with Greek bread, starters and dips and bacon sarnies for those who stayed to party until the early hours with us.
Delicious Designs in Belper made our wedding cake. We chose a 6 tier wedding cake covered in blossom petals with scattered diamantes. Rather than traditional fillings we had white chocolate chunks with fresh raspberries.
To round off a fabulous day we had a live five piece Greek band with lots of Greek dancing.
My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to choose a timeless colour palette. I wanted to keep everything quite neutral to ensure that I wouldn’t look back on my pictures and regret the colour I’d chosen or think the colour looked old fashioned.
