Less Cash, More Class. A Real Wedding (On A Budget!) In York- Stef & Rich

June 13th, 2014 | Julia Braime

York Wedding by Emilia Smith

When Brides Up North reader Stef first contacted me asking if I’d like to share her Real Wedding memories, she made it clear that she was extremely proud to have planned her big day whilst sticking to quite a narrow budget (in comparison to the “average” spend), and very much wanted to show other Brides Up North that you can have the day of your dreams without getting yourself into debt.

It might mean that there aren’t any “getting ready” shots or images of Stef and Rich’s wedding breakfast to share today (they had mates ready with a camera for those bits instead) but it did mean that they start their lives together money-worry free.  An excellent trade off, in my opinion. They don’t seem particularly put out by the lack of all those “details” that we are conditioned to think should make up a good wedding either.

C’mon, I’m a wedding blogger – it goes without saying that I love a huge blowout bash – but I like a refreshing (and savvy) approach too.  Don’t be afraid to work out a budget for your big day and then – here’s the clever part – stick to it.  If there’s money in the pot and you want to, go large (and send me the photos!), but if you’d rather save a few pennies for rainier days, that’s fine too.

Kudos to you Stef, your wedding looks like it was awesome.

Stef says: We got engaged on holiday in Bulgaria. We went on holiday with a group of friends, their children and my step daughter. Rich said he wanted to take me out for a meal on our own.

Next thing I know a horse and carriage pulls up. I knew instantly what he was up to. I was so nervous… but very happy. He asked me on the carriage. We didn’t go for dinner as we decided to go back to the hotel, buy champagne and celebrate with our friends and later we all went for a wonderful meal on the beach.

The ring was perfect! So different and so perfectly me.

Our wedding date was 29th March 2014. I ran York marathon in October 2013 and after the marathon we walked round York and saw York Registry Office. We went in and had a look. We both instantly knew that was where we wanted our small ceremony to be. We paid the deposit without a second thought.

We picked vintage blues and pinks and went for a tea party style. I love pink and we like to coordinate outfits a lot (yawn!) so we naturally went for pink and blue.

I wanted a tea length 50’s style dress. I found it at Deborah Moore Bridal and it was by Pronovias. I was originally going to get a high street dress or a bridesmaid dress as our budget was so small but I went with my best friend to try on dresses and saw “my dress”.  It was in the sale at more than half price but it was a full length gown. We played around with some pins and I decided to buy it and alter it.  I was so delighted with it and it is still hanging over my bed! It fits with my style perfectly… it’s different but still elegant and very “weddingy”.

My husband got his suit from the internet. It was extremely cheap but we ordered it and had it altered. He wore all blue with a blue dickie bow and his favourite blue suede brogues.

As we were on a strict budget we asked all our guests to wear what they wanted and informed them of the colour scheme and theme of the wedding. Our friends and family know us well and all followed our wishes.

I had my beautiful step daughter as my flower girl. We got her (unworn) dress from a second hand bridal shop called Bridal Reloved in Beverley.  She wanted a dress similar to mine and we wore matching shoes that we won on an auction site and I bought pink near shoe clips to jazz them up.

My photographer was a friend of a friend. Her name is Emilia smith (freelance). She was brilliant and we had such a wonderful experience with her

I wanted silk flowers mainly to keep them forever but also as they cost much much less.  I found a lady who makes bouquets on Etsy and I emailed asking for a custom order. I sent her pictures of our shoes and general theme and ordered two bouquets, a hair clip, and a button hole for my husband.

I made button holes for the guests from wool and pipe cleaners. I was super pleased with how it all turned out. The registry office had flowers of their own and we didn’t feel the need to have any more.

My mum made wooden spoons with bells and ribbons on… this was for the guests to shake and wave when we came out of the ceremony room. They were a fun and quirky idea and the kids loved them.

We opted for a champagne afternoon tea at the Grange Hotel, York.

I was very informal, with no seating plan.  We arranged sofas and comfy chairs so people could sit with who they wished and it was very relaxed.

For our evening shindig we served curry and cake. We had such a wonderful peaceful day – we wanted our night party to be a good knees up and it was!

York Wedding by Emilia Smith

The best part of the day for me was having the photographs in the city with just me and my husband.

We got a lot of attention and it was so much fun. We wanted the photos to be fun and capture our personalities and we wanted them to be natural. The weather was fantastic and it was such a wonderful buzz. We were on cloud nine!

We went to Tunisia for our honeymoon. Again we were on a budget and we shopped around. We did lots of activities like wine tasting, camel riding and had a spa day. It was a lovely hotel and as it was “out of season” the value for money was unbelievable… ultimately all that mattered to us was a bit of sun and seven days to be together.  Everything else was a bonus.

York Wedding by Emilia Smith

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to do what you want and don’t do things because they are expected. We feel that people spend a lot of money on things that are forgotten. We had a budget of £3000 and that had to include the honeymoon. We had a wonderful experience and we are now married and we don’t have any debts to pay. Don’t be afraid to ask friends for favours… we did and it was the best move we made, and also included them in our day.

.

Congratulations Stef & Rich!

Simply Stately. Sottero & Midgley For A Real Wedding At Rise Hall, East Yorkshire – Lois & Alex

January 8th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Rise Hall Wedding by Inspire Images

Brides Up North reader Lois chose a stately pile I know very well for her beautiful wedding celebration this summer:  the location for three Brides Up North Luxury Wedding exhibitions in 2012 and 2013 and Ms. Sarah Beeny’s country home – Rise Hall.  Good choice Lois!

Lois says:  We got engaged soon after we moved into our first home together in February 2012.  We were just at home – it was so cute.  We were married on 30th August 2013 at Rise Hall, East Yorkshire.

Rise Hall Wedding by Inspire Images

We had looked round several lovely venues in East Riding.  I first visited Rise Hall with my mum, because Alex was busy preparing to compete in the London 2012 Olympic Games – so time away from training was difficult to find.  We drove down the drive and the view was truly amazing – from that moment, I knew I was going to get married there.  We booked it straight away, even without Alex seeing it!

“Hello I Love You” A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Amy & Matthew

July 19th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

This afternoon’s post is a little different to most on the wedding blog, but at the same time, so, so similar.

Amy and Matthew’s wedding day was the most lovely and joyful of days, but sadly their wedding had to be brought forward because the groom was suffering from Hodgkins Lymphoma, from which he never recovered.  Amy and Matthew’s day, full of happiness, really celebrated their love for each other, and I am so thankful to Amy for sharing their photographs with Brides Up North this afternoon.

.

Next time you are stressing out over favours or finding the exact shade of peony to match your bridesmaids’ dresses, take a minute to remember what it’s all about: love.  We don’t all get our happy ending and as some wise men once said, love is all you need.

.

Andrew of Insight Photography says: It was the highlight of my UK career when Matthew and Amy ‘tied the knot’ at St Andrews Church in Kirkella and held their enormous celebration at The Hallmark Hotel on a glorious Bank Holiday.

.
If you’re a celebrity voyeur, you will no doubt have come across Matty – he is one of the UK’s most highly decorated hair stylists working with the internationally renowned icon
Mark Hill for over 25 years.

.
I met Amy about six years ago when I returned from my nine years of ‘retirement’ whilst living in Canada and when they approached me to cover their special day, I was totally honoured. Matthew had been battling Hodgkins Lymphoma for over 2 years however due to the rigours of his treatment, the couple pulled out all of the stops to move their wedding to Bank Holiday Monday.

.
Their wedding day was nothing short of one of the most moving experiences I have ever witnessed. Just to put Matthew’s popularity into perspective, personal messages were read out during the speeches from Fearne Cotton, Ant & Dec, Jonathan Ross, Trevor Sorbie and Nicky Clarke – all apologising for not being able to make it due to the ‘other’ Royal wedding which is apparently happening the following weekend!  A true legend married his bride in a style that only Matthew and Amy could pull off under such incredible circumstances.

.
I am really proud to say it was definitely a defining moment for me and a total privilege to capture the most special of days and I will never, ever forget seeing Matthew’s face as Amy walked down the aisle and the beam of light that emanated from this couple all day will never leave me.

Amy says:  Matthew and I got engaged on Sunday 17th January 2011 in The Wheatsheaf, Kirk Ella, the same place we met 8 years earlier.

.

We arranged to get married on Saturday 4th June 2012, however with Matthew’s diagnosis worsening, we brought the wedding forward and got married on Easter Monday, 25th April 2011. Everyone was great, suppliers couldn’t do enough for us and friends rallied around to make things happen

We were married at 12 noon at St Andrew’s Church, Kirk Ella, with the reception at The Hallmark Hotel, North Ferriby. The reverend Jonathan Juckes conducted the service and we were joined by over 200 guests. The village was brought to a standstill from well wishers, it was amazing!

We both wanted to get married in Church and our village church was just the perfect choice. Jonathan Juckes had really supported Matthew through his illness and I had known him for a long time too as I run the local Brownie unit. He was more than obliging to anything we wanted, including moving the wedding to get married on Easter Monday.

There wasn’t a theme as such. I put my mark on the day and Matthew had his spin on it too. It all fitted just so well together.  We both chose a colour. My favourite colour is pink and when I asked Matthew, he said black… I said try again, how about silver? He said OK!

I went to Deborah Moore Bridal in Hessle as I loved Maggie Sottero dresses I’d seen on the internet. I tried lots of dresses on… all the same style… I just didn’t put ‘the one’ on.  As I was leaving Deborah’s mum said to me, “Amy, just try this…” She pulled a dress out, I didn’t like it at all, it wasn’t anything like what I had tried on during my appointment. I put it on and immediately said I want it. Sonya by Maggie Sottero,  one-piece, corset, strapless gown with A-line skirt and chapel train. Satin are chiffon bands are ruched on the bodice. The side hip is accented with a crystal brooch. Fluted chiffon cascades from the side hip to the hemline. I love it!

.

For the bridesmaids, I knew exactly what I wanted. Matthew was a massive MOD and the guys would be in dapper suits (by Moss Bros).  My bridesmaids wore a calf length 50’s style dresses. It took me ages to find it, then driving through a local village one day, there it was in the window of Jacqueline’s. I made an appointment for the following Saturday and all the girls loved it too.

.

Hair and make up on the day was done by The Mark Hill Salon and Jan Lloyd of Lloyds Hair & Beauty, Hull.

I carried a bouquet of hot pink gerbera, orchids and roses by The Flower Stylist in Kirk Ella.  The adult bridesmaids carried white orchids with bright pink centres, wrapped in aspidistra leaves and my little bridesmaids had hot pink gerberas.

The boys arrived at the church on Vespas. Matthews got a retro vespa which is the replica of Sting’s from Quadrophenia, they looked amazing.  I travelled to the church by horse & carriage from KRM Carriages , which Matthew and I left in afterwards too. The bridesmaids, the groomsmen, my mum and Matthew’s mum travelled in cars supplied by Marshalls of Hull.

As favours, we gave every guest a packet of gerbera seeds.  Everyone has planted them this year in remembrance of our special day.

In the evening we had a band, Kinked, and then a DJ with karaoke. Matthew loved to sing and I’d give it a go too… it was just one big party!  Matthew was a massive Jim Morrison fan and the band did a full Doors set with Matthew, him singing as Jim Morrison, he loved it.

We went to Lanzarote on Honeymoon.  Lanzarote was where we first went on holiday together in October 2003, 6 months after we met. We got the OK from Matthew’s doctors to go away for a week, we pushed them and eventually they let us away for 10 days!  We stayed at The Sandos Papayago Arena in Playa Blanca. It was lovely.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be plan ahead, don’t think you’ve got ages to sort things, time creeps up on you very quickly. You need to be ‘too’ organised when you’re planning your wedding, there’s so much to do.
