time to twirl. the designer series: Naomi Neoh 2015

September 2nd, 2014 | Julia Braime

Iconic Vivien Front

Say Naomi Neoh and I think ‘swish!’ This lady’s delightful gowns were made for movement, with swingy silk chffon, draping bows and the softest lace.  Dresses that wash the catwalks with delicate blush, dare you to twirl and encourage a little sashay.

You can tell I’ve fallen head over heels and I challenge you not to.  Let’s meet Naomi as we debut her beautiful collection for 2015.

Naomi says: I design my dresses for elegant, romantic women who have a sense of fun and want to feel glamorous yet feminine of their wedding day.

Iconic Josephine front

What were your inspirations for this collection?

My other half bought me a book about the life of the Hollywood costume designer Edith Head who is one of my heroes – I love her work.  This year’s collection was inspired by the iconic sirens of 30s 40s and 50s Movies, Lana Turner, Dorothy Lamour…

Iconic Marilyn back

What shapes, fabrics and embellishments were chosen for the collection and why?

For this collection I will be using some new Italian weaves, with some silk mixes to give the handle and luxurious feel of silk but with less creasing! My love affair with silk chiffon will also continue through into the new collection with subtle tones of blush and peach. There are also delicate embellishments throughout, hand beaded waist details, and of course the signature silk corsages.

Iconic Marily sitting

What is the favourite piece in the new collection and why?

It changes all the time, but at the moment I’m particularly loving Loretta – the silk satin chiffon of the skirt is my favourite fabric, and it’s a versatile dress which can be worn in so many different ways with the selection of jackets I have designed to co-ordinate.

Iconic Vivien Back

What does 2014/ 2015 hold for Naomi Neoh?  What are you excited about?

I’m excited about the launch of six new Naomi Neoh stockists from October so even more brides will be able to get to see our dresses! 2015 will be all about creating and fine tuning again a bigger and better collection for 2016 brides.

Iconic Heidi front

What are your ‘best things’ in life?

I like little things, sun rise, freshly mown grass, laughing, and beautiful flowers.

Iconic Rosalind front colour 2

the designer series: Charlotte Balbier

August 27th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Charlotte Balbier

We recently featured Ms Balbier’s new Iscoyd Park bridal collection for 2015 on these very pages, and today I’m proud to hear all about the inspirations behind my wonderful friend’s beautiful designs.  So Brides Up North, will you be a Balbier bride?  You lucky, lucky things.

Click here to view the extended collection.

Charlotte Balbier Collection 2014

Charlotte says: A Charlotte Balbier bride is confident and daring in both her wedding dress style and every day fashion choices. My brides certainly have their own sense of individuality. Whether you’re a relaxed boho bride whose bouquet choice is wild hand picked rural flowers or a city fashion forward bride who keeps it minimalist and chic. Some brides like a theme and some like to keep it eclectic, it’s a personal style and choice and both are gorgeous.

Charlotte Balbier Collection 2014

What were your inspirations for this collection?

The Iscoyd Park Collection is very close to my heart as I designed the collection based on my wedding day to Teddy. My wedding day took place at a venue called Iscoyd Park in North Wales last December. ‘The Iscoyd Park’ collection is made up of over twenty new gorgeous gowns in an array of styles to suit the modern day bride, their wedding and style. The new collection includes two dresses I actually wore on the big day called ‘The Charlotte’ and ‘Iscoyd Park.’ I am flattered we’ve had such a positive response to brides wearing the same dress as I did on my big day! The ‘Iscoyd Park’ collection was designed with love, close to my dear heart.

Charlotte Balbier Collection 2014

What shapes, fabrics and embellishments were chosen for the collection and why?

The Charlotte Balbier collection has always been fashion inspired.  Gowns that are forward thinking for the new generation bride. My signature style and look is using soft French laces. Charlotte Balbier is utterly feminine in charm and grace. My gowns are inherently traditional but with that added extra twist of fashion for a modern gown, bride and wedding day. The collection presents classical elegance and timeless gowns that never go out of fashion in array of styles, silhouettes, fabrics and a soft gold, pink and ivory colour pallette.

Charlotte Balbier Collection 2014

What sizes are your gowns available in?

Our sizing is from 0 to any size. Brides can choose the sizing they need and our stockist’s usually amend the dresses to fit the bride to perfection.

Charlotte Balbier Collection 2014

What does 2014/ 2015 hold for your label? What are you excited about?

Charlotte Balbier has been around for more than 10 years now and we’ve built a great brand. I am now embarking on a new chapter and looking forward to another 10 years, staying at the forefront of British bridal and looking to also take the Balbier brand International. Last year I won the Wedding Ideas Magazine’s Bridal Designer Awards and I’ve just been nominated for Perfect Wedding’s Best Bridal Designer. Winning Awards is a great achievement and honour to be recognized in the industry. Brides who’d love Charlotte Balbier to win can vote here.

Charlotte Balbier Collection 2014

What are your “best things” in life?

I am a very lucky lady because the best things in life surround me all the time! I’m constantly surrounded by lovely Charlotte Balbier bridal dresses and of course everything else in the bridal industry. I love shoes especially Jimmy Choo’s, Aruna Seth and Freya Rose. I love Clarins facials and enjoy one once a month religiously! I love my dog Buster and my dear husband Teddy!

the designer series: Lyn Ashworth by Sarah Barrett

August 12th, 2014 | Julia Braime

April Bloom

This afternoon I’m proud to introduce the latest collection by Sarah Barrett for Lyn Ashworth.  Sarah designs for all women, whatever size or age, and her beautiful line for 2015 is no exception.

Sarah says: My inspiration for this collection is quite simply romance.  Exquisite lace with a hint of delicate sparkle offers an air of aristocracy, while subtle pearlised metallic touches, with the prettiest of beadwork highlight tinted antique pale gold.  Soft silvers, blush pinks and serene cream tones are all complimented by the simplicity of crisp, pale, ivory tones.

This collection is a gateway to femininity, playful and romantic: capturing that hidden moment when it is just you and the man you love.  When you think no one else is watching, just the two of you in your private world!  That playful gaze!  That perfect, almost ‘peekaboo’, moment.

Ivory Vine

Billowing skirts drape and fold in beautiful soft satin organza giving a dreamy hazy transparency, the fluidity of which is almost liquid to the touch. Perfectly shaped bodices give structure under delicate overlays with the prettiest of sleeves, dramatic backs, low or high finished with button upon button.

Nipped in waistlines are emphasized by yard upon yard of fabric, tied off at the back to create bows adding further dynamics to the dress.  Finished with the prettiest of flower brooch pins in the softest shades and delicate feathers, the draping sash tails creating length and movement to the dress.  The most exquisite lace jackets create that day to evening look and the finest of soft silk tulles are used to create veils in which to compliment the collection perfectly.

The shapes and silhouettes of this collection can be changed with ease by simply adding or removing petticoats, offering the option of volume or subtle draping.

Lovers Kiss (2)

The key to a balanced life is love! Family and friends turn life into the “best thing” whatever I do am doing or achieving.

I am so excited to be launching my new Lyn Ashworth by Sarah Barrett 2015 collection and I have a few fabulous things on the drawing board and projects to unveil next year.  Watch this space!

Lovers Kiss

Lyn Ashworth gowns retail from £1,600 upwards.

call it magic. eye candy: terry fox’s “siren song” collection 2015

July 18th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Terry Fox Siren Song Collection 2015

“I approach designing a dress as if I have an artist’s brush and a blank canvas in my hands; I need the picture to move and change as your eyes wander across the design, focussing on detailed embellishment along the way, and finding something new and even more intriguing on the way back.” Terry Fox

Nothing like a bit of eye candy to get your Friday off to the right start, is there?

The Designer Series: Christos Costarellos

July 9th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Wedding Dresses by Christos Costarellos

Each spring, I’m excited to make my annual pilgrimage to the smoke to worship at the altar of bridal design at White Gallery, London.  If you think I sound a little enthusiastic, you’d be right: with a personal background in fashion, this is the event that I look forward to most all year.  A chance to see my favourite designers’ creations up close, catch up on the industry gossip, immerse myself in inspiration, lace, tulle and sequins.

Officially, White Gallery is one of the leading international designer bridal trade and press shows, gathering the best in British and international bridal design to preview and take to market the gowns and the gorgeous that will be landing in a bridal boutique near you next season.

Unofficially, it’s heaven.

Today, in our first Designer Series feature of 2014, I’m proud to introduce a new name to the pages of this wedding blog, a designer whose work really resonates with my own personal style.  Showing for the first time in London this April, and currently without a UK stockist (lets start the campaign now girls!) Christos Costarellos is one to watch.

Costarellos has produced a beautiful, forward thinking collection for 2015 with influences from his Greek heritage and vintage icons.  The result?  Stunning, new-boho gowns that are totally on the fashion nail for next season.

Oh. YES.

Wedding Dresses by Christos Costarellos

What sort of woman do you design for?

Costarellos says: I don’t think I have a specific woman ‘type’ in mind when I design my dresses, but I believe that my work combines a classical, understated elegance with bold femininity and sensuality. In that sense, I design for women who have a strong personality and are not afraid to show it!

Wedding Dresses by Christos Costarellos

What were your inspirations for this collection?

The Greek landscape, history and tradition is at the heart of each of my collections, and my new bridal collection is no exception. Lace patterns found on Greek islands are combined with lines and forms inspired by one of my favourite designers from the past, Jeanne Lanvin. The collection also pays tribute to another great couturier of the early 20th century, Charles Worth – especially his luxurious embellishments which I find fascinating

Wedding Dresses by Christos Costarellos

What shapes, fabrics and embellishments were chosen for the collection and why?

In order to achieve a sense of vintage allure and lightness, transparent and very fine fabrics have been used in various ways – for instance, we have used 25 meters of tulle for a single skirt so that it would appear both playful and proper. We have also used lace extensively: as a fashion house we have many years of experience in the use of lace, and our new bridal collection is really a celebration of that tradition. Our expertise allows us to combine different kinds of lace in even more daring ways, in order to get a more contemporary look. Naturally, simple lines and forms that reference Ancient Greek dresses have also found their way into this collection, as well as more luxurious silhouettes and materials such as silk organza and embroidered fabrics.

Wedding Dresses by Christos Costarellos

What does 2014/ 2015 hold for your business?

I’m really excited about how our bridal collection has been received so far – it is the first time we have present our gowns abroad and the response has been very positive. We are also presenting our pret-à-porter summer collection in Los Angeles this year, at the Fashion Forwards showroom. As usual, we will be showing our new Spring-Summer 2015 pret-a-porter collection in Paris during fashion week in September and then we will attend NY bridal week in October.

Works Of Art. The Designer Series: Raimon Bundo

November 21st, 2013 | Julia Braime

Celine by Raimon Bundo

As I mentioned yesterday, this year I have been in the privileged position of obtaining access to all my favourite bridal designers for a series of exclusive interviews here on Brides Up North.  Now that the collections have landed in a boutique near you, I’ll be recapping the series daily on the Brides Up North Facebook page. Click here to like the page and stay updated – I’ll be giving you a sneak peek at their newest designs, sharing the inspirations behind the collections and giving you a glance into their (very beautiful) world.  Otherwise, you can search “Designer Series” here on the blog and get lost in the lovely right now.

Today, it’s time to add one more talent to the party, as another of my favourites, Spanish designers Cristina and Ivonne of Raimon Bundo show off their 2014 collection.  So what do you think, have I saved the best till last?  I’d love to know your thoughts.

Please introduce Raimon Bundo and tell us a little about your brand?

Raimon Bundo is a family company based in Barcelona with over 40 years experience in the bridal industry. Everything is hand-made in Spain by a team of artisans who put lots of love into every dress. Designers Cristina and Ivonne create four very different collections per year but always share and promote the same values of quality, modernity and simplicity in everything they design. The collections launched to UK brides in 2012 and have had an amazing response from stockists and brides alike.

What were the inspirations behind this very beautiful collection?

Art is one of the pillars in my life and I use designing bridal wear as a vehicle to convey my feelings to the outside world. My work is a reflection of me and of the brides who wear my designs, brides who obviously have their personality that they want to express. This expression is what inspires me to continue my work in this field.

Ariadna by Raimon Bundo

Where do you look for inspiration?

Everywhere I can! I try to fill my free time with as much exposure to the arts as possible and I also try to spend time with the brides themselves at our shops in Barcelona and Madrid. That proximity to the needs and desires of each bride is always a major source of inspiration.

Arola by Raimon Bundo

What sort of woman do you design for?

The Raimon Bundo bride has a timeless identity present in every collection we do. She is elegant, unfussy, natural. Our bride values style, quality and feeling good on her big day. The four collections we produce each year have something for every bride so she can chose a design that best suits her personality and her wedding.

Bella by Raimon Bundo

What fabrics and embellishments were chosen for the new collection and why?

Fabrics are so important to us and we only deal with European mills.

Customers always comment on the quality of the laces, satins and organzas we use. Alongside our signature laces, satins and organzas in a variety of hues you will find the most amazing soft silk tulle as used in our Diana dress. We have also continued to push our light-as-air brocade fabrics as used by Oscar de la Renta and worn by the lovely Jennifer Lawrence when she fell up the stairs at this years Oscars!

Do you have a personal favourite from the new collection?

I don’t have a favourite dress but if I had to chose a favourite collection it would be Ir by Bundo. I have quite a lot of freedom when designing this collection which I find very inspiring. Almost anything is possible so we often have a varied and daring palette of colours and unconventional designs. For me, the average wedding is sometimes a little too conventional so I try to break with the more traditional with this collection and move towards a bohemian and vintage style. There is a certain courage and desire that I express in this collection which I don’t have to hold back or limit in any way.

Gala by Raimon Bundo

What jewellery would you pair with this collection?

As you will see at our catwalk shows we tend to favour floral-inspired pieces be they boho or classic. We also like jewellery inspired by certain periods of history so may find the odd Austen-esque brooch or 20’s deco item popping up here and there. Jewellery is quite a personal choice; some girls like to add a bit more bling or sparkle to their look and we encourage girls to customize the look to their personality wherever possible. It’s your big day after all!

And what beauty look?

We love the idea of a classic dress contrasted by darling red lips that hint at the passion of the wedding night. For our more whimsical or bohemian brides we love a paler, mother-of-pearl effect.

Do you have a signature piece?

The collections are hugely varied but at the moment I would say we have two signature styles: The classic clean structured look of Igueldo with its full skirt and stiff satin fabric. And then we have the lace/tulle combinations of dresses like Diana and Infanta.

How do you decide on the names for your gowns?

Although there is very often a very strong art bias in naming the collections we take reference from everywhere. It could be architecture one year, history the next, or wonders of the natural world as you will find in this years mainline where we have names like Iguazu (a waterfall on the borders of Brazil and Argentina or Igueldo (a mountain in San Sebastian, Spain).

What is the process for your clients from finding “the one” to the final fitting?

All our dresses are made-to-measure and created by hand in our Barcelona studios. We strive to turn all orders around within 3 months from date of order.

Brides need only visit one of our lovely stockists, decide on their dream dress and get measured up. The rest is just a case of one or two fittings in-store before the big day.

What is the retail price range for your designs?

Mainline and Ir by Bundo collections retail between £1,850 – £2,500. Our Kiss collection retails between £1,400 – £1,800.

What sets Raimon Bundo apart from other bridal brands?

All our dresses are made to measure for no extra cost and our lead times average 2-3 months from date of order. We also allow changes to style for little or no cost (depending on the change requested) and if brides want a custom-made matching jacket or to add more boning to their dress it’s no problem!

How did you get into wedding dress design?

Creativity and business run through our family. Designing is the way I express myself.

Was there a defining point in your career that made your business the success it is today?

There have been many along the way but opening our own shops in the most prestigious streets in Madrid and Barcelona was pretty special. And being invited back every year to show on the catwalk at Barcelona bridal week is always a good buzz!

What are your plans for the future?

To keep doing what we enjoy for many more years to come.

Is this your dream career?

I wouldn’t want things any other way. I enjoy painting and designing womenswear but there is something very special about that connection with a bride on the most important day of her life.

Where doo you go to relax?

We have a place in Formentera which is so beautiful and unspoiled, the water is so clear. It is where I feel most at home and where I enjoy spending time with my children.

What are your “best things” in life?

Family, doing a job I love and art – in that order.
