Luxury Wedding Fairs With Top UK Wedding Blog Brides Up North

The Editorials: Something Blue

June 10th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

It was lovely to wake up this morning to kind emails from suppliers and brides to be congratulating us on another successful Brides Up North event at Rise Hall yesterday and the conclusion of a fabulous Spring season.  I could go on, and on (and on) about how much fun hosting these wedding exhibitions has been and how much I love each and every one of my readers and exhibitors, but all I’ll say is a massive thank you from me and my team for all of your amazing support – you rock! The Northern Revolution really is in full swing.

.

When I started the blog back in the dark ages of 2010 my aim was to show other soon-to-be-weds that you  don’t need to head to the smoke to source suppliers for your big day, and to demonstrate the levels of quality available from the wedding industry right on your door step.  These events are doing just that – stepping out from behind the computer screen and showing you exactly what these talented people can do for you.  If you missed our events this Spring, be sure to pop along to an event near you from September 1st.  We’ll be announcing the full line up shortly, but we have another nine events across three regions in the diary already.  Watch this space.  Exhibitors can also contact us for details by emailing contact@bridesupnorth.co.uk

.

.

Wedding Magazine

.

.

Another way in which I aim to spread our message is via the plethora of freelance columns that I pen on a monthly basis.  The deadlines here at Brides Up North HQ are always looming, let me tell you!  As well as contributing to many local bridal titles I am also proud to have been recognised as an influential UK wedding blogger and asked to write my own regular column for National glossy Wedding Magazine. This morning I am sharing a column that was published in one of their recent issues in case you missed it offline.

.

Girls, get ready to slip on those blue suede shoes… today we are on the hunt for your something blue!

I wrote: You know the words: Something Old, Something New… but when it comes to wedding day luck, style savvy brides are taking no chances by adding cooler colour details to their big day.

.

Almost everything looks bright against white, so take care when adding bold blues to your wedding day scheme. Pick an angle and go with it – choose crisp navy to define and formalise your colour palette or the palest pastel powders to soften and prettify the overall look.

.

Whichever shade you choose, all you’ll need to add is a silver sixpence for your shoe!

Blue Blooms

.

Never mind green fingers, the natural world is awash with pretty blue petals in varying shades. Add the freshest bluebells to your Spring bouquet or try hand-tied cornflowers for a relaxed Summer look. Towering indigo delphiniums or bleached out hydrangeas look stunning in centrepieces.

Forget diamonds – think royal. Copy the Duchess of Cambridge and sparkle in sapphires instead. Vintage magpies on the hunt for these pretty stones might find that they can cover their Something Old and Something Blue all at once…

Blue For The Boys

.

Most men that I’ve met are afraid of the fuchsia cravat. Win style and brownie points by suggesting that your boy plays it cool in blue. From pale tones, through oxford blue to nearly black navy, 2013’s sharpest wedding suits all seem to have a hint of the hue.

All In The Details

.

To add a dash of colour without feeling over committed, pay attention to detail. Try a pale petticoat under shorter frocks, a flash of a blue suede shoe, a pretty periwinkle vintage motor or piles of Parma violets for your guests to take away with them.

Sparkling White: A Real Winter Wedding In York – Anna & Lee

January 21st, 2013 | Julia Braime

York Winter Wedding - Dominic Wright Photography

Anna and Lee’s sparkling Winter wedding feels like the perfect way to begin a fresh new week here on the wedding blog.  With tons of twinkle, crisp whites and beautiful images by super talented Brides Up North Featured Supplier Dominic Wright Photography, Anna and Lee’s day is inspiration all the way.  Enjoy.

Anna says:  We got engaged at the Minster in York on the 14th February 2012. I wasn’t expecting it all at as Lee hates Valentine’s Day so I was very shocked and thrilled.

We were married on Sunday 23rd December 2012 at The Hospitium, Museum gardens, York.  We loved the 14th century building and the mixture of the stone work and pillars downstairs and more modern upstairs. We thought it would be the perfect Christmas wedding venue. The setting in Museum gardens meant that we could have beautiful photographs (thanks to our amazing photographers!) in the Abbey ruins that are in the grounds of the park.

I wanted a winter wonderland with lots of foliage, twinkle and Christmas touches.  I used a lot of white sparkle and then greens through the bridesmaid dresses and the foliage.

We put a surprise guided bus tour on (with bubbly!) for all our guests. It picked the guests up from Hotel Du Vin, York and the guests then had a personalised tour of the city before being dropped at the venue of the wedding.

I wanted a huge princess dress that was very classy and beautiful. I bought my stunning Pronovias dress from Brides of Harrogate. I wanted the groom, best man and fathers to be in classic three piece suits. The groom’s suit was a William Hunt (Savile Row) suit.  The bridesmaid’s dresses were from Brides of Harrogate also and were made by the designer Mori Lee.

My make-up was by Julia Spink and the beautiful hair (bride, bride’s mother, bridesmaids and flower girls was all done by Hannah Green.

I had recorded the children in my school singing a beautiful and moving song to be played through ceremony (which had many of our guests in tears). Then we had Christmas songs playing throughout the drinks reception.

Its so hard to pick a favourite part of the day! The reaction of everyone (including the groom who cried) when I walked into the room, the relaxed atmosphere and the knowledge that everyone was absolutely loving the day and buzzing with it and of course wearing my stunning dress and seeing my groom looking gorgeous, as were all of my guests. It really was the most amazing day.

I carried a bouquet of white roses with eucalyptus and sparkle. I wanted something very simple and classic that wouldn’t date in the photographs.  Our florist was the amazing and talented Susan Dudley-Smith.

We had personalised crackers which matched the incredible stationery designed and made by my sister in law, Kate Wells. She made the most stunning ‘Advent Calendar’ invitations for our guests to open on the days leading up to the wedding. The guests loved them! There were also personalised teddies for the flower girls to open at the meal.

.

.

The delicious catering was by Bradshaws of York.  My mother in law made a beautiful ivory wedding cake with flowers on it to tie in with the theme.

Given the time of year and the fact that our daughter is only two, we didn’t fancy a long hall flight for our honeymoon. We ended up booking a luxury cottage in Northumberland, so we had five nights relaxing as a family, with meals out and beautiful walks on the beach every day.

My top tip for other Brides Up North is to make sure you stick to your guns about the sort of day you want. If you are happy and relaxed on the day all your guests will be too. Unfortunately the saying is true – you get what you pay for, so pick out the things that are really important to you and then see if you can cut back (or make your own) in other areas. Guests will love your personalised and individual touches.

Super Quirky Gorgeous! A Real Wedding In North Yorkshire – Edwina & Adam

December 3rd, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Dominic Wright Photography-North Yorkshire Wedding Photographer

.

.

I’m spending most of my day in trains and automobiles today as I head North of the Border for some exciting meetings about bringing the Brides Up North magic to my lovely Scottish readers in person (hello you, sorry it’s taken so long!), as well as catching up with some of my favourite suppliers in that part of the country.

.

My family has a strong Scottish heritage (my Mum was born and raised just outside of and my parents met and married whilst working in an Edinburgh hotel) so I always feel like a trip even further North is a little like coming home.  I’ve packed plenty of Winter woolies (as well as a dash of sparkle) for the two day trip and I can’t wait to feel that bracing wind blowing the colour back into my cheeks.

.

So, have laptop, will travel, and will look forward to sharing some news soon…

.

In the meantime, I wouldn’t go gallivanting without leaving you without something extra special to pour over.  Step forward Edwina & Adam and their absolutely stunning Real Wedding at the wonderful Crab Manor Hotel in North Yorkshire, with images by the disgustingly talented Dominic Wright Photography (a Brides Up North Featured Supplier no less!).

Adam took me to his parents house and proposed to me there. I didn’t have a clue.

We were married at Crab Manor, Asenby, Thirsk on Wednesday 5th September 2012.  We loved

how different and quirky it was with beautiful gardens and amazing themed rooms.

I chose a Justin Alexander oyster pearl lace dress which came up to the neck and was fitted into the waist with an oyster pearl satin band round the middle which went into a fishtail . It was from Blissful Daze, Sheffield. Such amazing staff and a top class shop.

Victoria Farr Hair & Make Up Specialist did my hair and make up.

My bridesmaids wore midnight blue dresses from Coast which were knee length with lace detail at the top.

The groomsmen wore a three piece handmade midnight blue suits made by King & Allen.

I carried a bouquet of cream roses hand tied with oyster pearl organza material, lined with pearls and feathers.

We had a harpist throughout the ceremony. A flamenco guitarist played after the wedding breakfast and a jazz band joined us for the evening.

We dressed the ceremony room with extra white flowers and had black organza bows tied round the chairs. For the wedding breakfast we had white chair covers with white bows.

City Chic! A Real Wedding In Manchester – Kate & Mark

August 8th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Due to behind the scenes technical issues here at Brides Up North yesterday afternoon (doh!), we only managed to bring you one instalment of lovely yesterday (double doh!).  Happily, things are all fixed now and it’s on with the show (yippee!).  And I’m definitely making up for the delay!

.

Keeping the pretty coming as we conquer Wednesday, with a beautiful black and white wedding in the North West, sent to me by Brides Up North Featured Supplier Dominic Wright Photography and real bride Kate.  Much shoe envy at Brides Up North HQ right now.

Kate says:  We got engaged in July 2008.  Mark arranged a secret trip to Budapest (a place I have always wanted to visit). He even packed my passport as I had no idea that morning we would be jetting off. By midnight we were standing on the fairy lit chain bridge overlooking the Danube where he proposed with a gorgeous sparkly ring.

We were married on 1st July 2012 at The Great John Street Hotel, When I first met Mark he had a flat opposite the hotel, and when we first visited it we were blown away by the style and attention to detail.

.

We walked onto the roof terrace and just looked at each other in agreement. I think I just knew that I could have the wedding of my dreams with no alteration to the venue and even no further decoration was needed: it was perfect.

Mark and I have similar tastes (which is lucky) We love the class and simplicity of Jo Malone packaging and The White Company so our theme became black and white with a pop of red (because I love red shoes).

My best friend and bridesmaid Gill has a brilliant eye for dressing figures and even though we set out with Grecian dresses in mind Gill knew my figure would suit an hourglass corseted dress and she was right. As soon as I tried the Maggie Sottero Anniston dress I loved my shape in it, I loved the sparkles, the lace and the tulle. Gill said the perfect dress is one you don’t have to alter and she was right. I bought the dress in Blush a bridal boutique in Uppermill where we lived at the time. My tiara was from Glitzy Secrets and my shoes from Kurt Geiger.

I wanted my bridesmaids to look glam and sophisticated but most of all I wanted them to be able to wear the dresses again. With help from Gill again we found these stunning little black tulle dresses on ASOS.

.

For the flower girls I set my heart on the Bridget dress from Monsoon which happened to be a best selling line that sold out online and in most stores. Fortunately we chanced upon the sizes we needed on day in King Street just when I was looking for a substitute dress.

.

Mark wore a gorgeous grey suit from Hugo Boss which they had custom fit for him and the groomsmen wore black suits with gunmetal grey ties.

I carried cream avalanche roses by Paula from Orchard Designs in Heaton Norris, she was very lovely and exceed my expectations.

Our cake was made to order by the very talented Andrea Eckersley at Cake BombShe makes the most delicious, moist, tasty cakes ever. We had vanilla and jam, carrot cake and chocolate with soft centre cup cakes and a devilish chocolate top cake – it was too good!

My favourite part of the day was the speeches.  The nerves were over for me, the champagne was flowing and so were the tears (of joy of course) and just to have everyone you love around you hearing lovely things about you as a couple was my happiest moment. I felt like all the planning was worth it at that point. My father, brother-in law and husband all made such sincere, lovely speeches and I was very proud of them.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be however much you plan your time add twenty minutes to it I had all day to get ready and I was still twenty minutes late. Also do everything you can as early as possible before the wedding, you need a day or two before just to unwind to feel ready.

.

.

Congratulations Kate & Mark!
