real wedding recap: a pink & gold wedding at lartington hall – florence & stephen

July 1st, 2016 | Julia Braime

It’s holiday season here on the blog, and as the editorial team take a short break, we’ll be leaving you with a reduced blogging schedule so that you still get your daily dose of wedding lovely. Usual service will recommence on Monday 4th July 2016 but in the meantime watch out for recaps of some of our favourite Real Weddings so far this year.

Drop in every day for the very prettiest, most unique wedding inspiration and – if you are a Brides Up North bride – to see if your real wedding was one of our top picks.

Before we start today’s post we must warn that it may cause serve weakness of the knees.

Florence and Stephen’s wedding takes place at what we believe is one of the most stunning wedding venues in the North, not only that, but it was held during one of our favourite months of the year, and it features our top hues of pale pink and elegant gold.

As a real family occasion with the bride and groom’s children fully involved, this is a wedding day that really is beautiful through and through.

We could seriously swoon over this one all day, but instead of rabbiting on we’ll let you see the pretty for yourselves – just make sure you’re sitting down first!

florence says: We got engaged in 2012 at Matfen Hall Hotel in Northumberland. We had been together a few years and I was expecting our son, Hugo. I was quite pregnant by this point and feeling tired. Stephen surprised me with a night away so we headed to Matfen and just spent the afternoon relaxing. He had booked the most expensive room in the hotel and I still had no idea. Just before we headed down to supper, he proposed in the window, overlooking the beautiful grounds. It was all quite relaxed. We ate in the Library Dining Room quite quietly excited to know we were finally going to get married!

Our wedding was on 31st October 2015, yes, Halloween! It most certainly was not a themed wedding, though there was a nod to the day with pumpkins scattered here and there. October is my favourite month and it was the last Saturday the venue had available – so we just went with it and now quite enjoy the looks on people’s faces when we tell them the date.

An Opulent Wedding at Lartington Hall (c) Nicola Helen Photography (27)

We initially wanted a venue that was very quiet and intimate, our local village hall perhaps. But we had fallen in love with a property in Lartington and knowing that we would be spending the rest of our lives there, we thought it would be wonderful to be able to tell the children that we were married locally.

Once we viewed Lartington Hall in Teesdale, we knew it was something special. My family are from Barnard Castle and my parents had stories about the Hall from years gone by. It just felt right. Once the hall was booked, things grew from there.

We Love Yorkshire: A Styled Wedding Inspiration Shoot

September 6th, 2013 | Julia Braime

Ruth Mitchell Photography

So, it’s official – Autumn has arrived.  The weathermen are saying that there’ll be no more sun for us, and I find my thoughts turning to new boots and winter coats (ah ok, I was thinking about those back in July… always a season ahead of myself)!  If you’ve got a September wedding coming up, don’t despair, I reckon we can still squeeze out an Indian summer yet.

If you’ve cracked open the black opaque tights and are anticipating lunch at your desk (forgot your umbrella?  Thought so) then today’s sunny styled shoot sent to me by Ruth Mitchell Photography and  celebrating our great Yorkshire countryside should take you back to less soggy times.

Be inspired… there’s always next year!

Ruth says: We all knew all along but now it’s official, Yorkshire has earned the title of the leading destination at the World Travel Awards. With it’s dramatic landscapes, stunning coastline and vibrant cities and great architecture what better place to get married?

Way back in April, Yorkshire Country Weddings decided that we wanted to share some of the natural beauty of the area with you.  Based right in the middle of the Dales and North Yorkshire Moors national parks in the area where James Herriot had his veterinary practice, we were inspired to have a photo-shoot with a simple country theme in keeping with the area.

We love some of the gorgeous themed weddings that brides choose but we thought that the beautiful landscape surrounding Laskill Country House in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park spoke for itself -so on a very windy day in April some of the areas best wedding suppliers got together to showcase the area and their products. See if you can spot anyone under the table hanging onto the tablecloth so that it didn’t blow away – again!

Due to the wind we were unable to take all of the outside shots that we would have liked to, but you can sample them for yourself on Sunday 22nd September when Yorkshire Country Weddings are holding a wedding fair at Laskill Country House which is near Helmsley and just along the road from the fabulous Rievaulx Abbey. After meeting the suppliers you can soak up the scenery with a free coffee, and a cake if your fancy takes you, and chat about the ideas and inspiration you have gleaned from your visit.

Grace says:  We got engaged in January 2011 at the Crab and Lobster, Asenby just before I went to Spain to ride in the Spanish Sunshine Tour for eight weeks.

.

We were married on 12th May 2012 at St Marys Church at Myton on Swale, the first wedding at the church for nine years, with our reception at Allerton Castle near Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.  Allerton Castle was the first venue we looked at and no where else compared, it was just amazing, a fairytale castle.

We didn’t have a particular theme and just wanted something simple but traditional.  The colours that we chose were ivory with touches of red.

I chose an ivory tulle dress from Andrea Bambridge of York with a long train of tulle, and flowers scattered across the bodice and skirt. I wore a veil and tiara previously worn by my sister Charlotte who was married six years ago and gorgeous Swarovski shoes by Gina.

.

.

.

.

My four adult bridesmaids wore red Anoushka G dresses from House of Frazer, and our four flowergirls wore ivory dresses with a red bow on the back.  Our pageboy who was two wore an ivory suit with a waistcoat but he decided he wanted to be like the girls so he wore one of the flowergirls’ cardigans during the ceremony!

.

The other guys wore traditional outfits by York Suit Hire

The church service was the most emotional and nervous part of the day and meant the most because our marriage is really what the day was about.

.

Vocalis Choir of Harrogate sang in the church.  Amongst other songs they performed ‘I Will Follow Him’ originally sung by the choir and Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act.

.

.

.

.

I carried a traditional shower bouquet of David Austin Patience Roses and Calla Lilies, and Dendrobium OrchidS.  My adult bridesmaids’ carried natural hand-tied bouquets of red roses and the flowergirls carried hearts decorated with Dendrobium Orchids, all provided by Elise Flowers. Two of the hearts are now hanging at either side of the fireplace as a momentum of the day. There were arrangements of flowers inside the church and there was an arch of flowers over the church door. At Allerton Castle table decorations were also provided by Elise Flowers and the staircase was decorated with ivy, fairylights and storm lanterns, and a wishing tree was placed in the conservatory.  This has now been planted as a reminder of our day.

A chimney sweep – Pete the Sweep – attended to wish us luck!  This is a tradition derived 200 years ago when King George II was riding his horse in a royal procession when without warning a stray dog began nipping the legs of the King’s horse causing it to rear up and the King lost control. As the crowd looked on in horror, a chimney sweep came from the crowd, regained control of the horse and returned to the crowd. After the procession the King was unable to thank the sweep personally for his bravery so he decreed that from that day onwards all chimney sweeps should be considered lucky.

During the drinks reception Pure Silk Jazz played to entertain 90 guests followed by Sounds Familiar, a local band from Tollerton, who played during the meal and then Pure Silk Cutz played in the evening.

Our first dance was a waltz, with a few twists and turns, to Take That’s Rule the World.  We rehearsed our first dance with The Butterfly School of Dance in Thirsk.

The Wedding Institute

April 16th, 2012 | Julia Braime

Saltburn By The Sea Postcard

.

.

Stationer Vicky Trainor and Photographer Becky Mitchell are established national and regional businesses in the creative and wedding market. In January this year an exciting photo shoot ‘Rigwood Manor’ took place in an old manor house in the coastal town of Saltburn by the Sea. A shoot that was to bring together a wealth of creative suppliers who work in the wedding industry, all from the North East/North Yorkshire area, all designers and specialists with a passion for working in creative and interesting ways.  Click here and here to see the results of that very special shoot.

.

.

Their passion for promoting northern based artists, designers and makers is now continuing through the forming of ‘The Wedding Institute’ a very visual, community spirited and exciting event, a new twist on the wedding fair.

.

“A wedding fair with a sprinkle of pretty and a little dash of vintage”

.

“A small intimate affair, we want you to come and ‘hang out’ with us and not just ‘visit’. We want you to leave with a refreshing cluster of new suppliers to help you with your styling and wedding planning. We would love for you to make new friends, to have fun, to laugh, to have a day out, to be totally immersed in the creativity and vintage style of organising your big day. We want to inspire you to allow your personality to come through into the styling of your day and for your wedding to be true to you and the love you have for each other”.

.

“A place where you can come and be inspired, escape with your imagination, take time to chat with suppliers, relax in our tea room at the heart of the exhibition, listen to live music, indulge in a 1950’s make-up session with our make-up artist or a pretty collection of ‘victory rolls’ styled in your hair by The Wedding Institute’s stylist”.
