The Editorials: Surfer Chic. Brides Up North Talks Online Wedding Planning For Loved Up Magazine Spring 2014

April 1st, 2014 | Julia Braime

Brides Up North For Loved Up Magazine Spring Summer 2014

Away from the pages of the wedding blog, I’m frequently commissioned to write freelance pieces for various glossy magazines (Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out, eh?) and quite often like to share that content again here when I think it might be interesting or relevant to my readers.  Or genuinely because I’m just really, really proud to see my work in print.

Loved Up Magazine, to whose pages I’ve been contributing for – goodness! – actual years and years now got in touch to ask me to compile a feature sharing my “top clicks” for online wedding planning content, a subject close to my heart.

Yes, I’m a first and foremost a blogger, but I’m also a consumer.  Shock horror!  I read other blogs.  And I’m a prolific consumer of wedding media especially.  I like to keep up with the industry news, the creativity of my peers and to be honest, it’s still fun for me.  Yes, even after four years of blogging about weddings twice a day and 40+ branded bridal events and exhibitions under my Brides Up North belt… I still love it.  I’ve a full blog reader, test out any new bridal app going and don’t even get me started on social media.  39,394 tweets down at the time of writing, I’m well aware that that’s my unwritten novel, right there on Twitter (hey, come follow me, I’ve clearly a lot to say!)

So, here’s my current top picks of the online wedding World – emphasis on current there: trust me, I could have filled the whole magazine with links.  So, have fun exploring, but come right back again afterwards  y’hear?!

I said:  In my role as editor of one of the top wedding blogs in the UK I spend a whole lot of time at a computer screen. Mostly its bonafide blog business, but I also spend some time every day keeping on top of what’s new in the online bridal world. It’s as much about checking out the latest cyber products for my bride-to-be readers as staying ahead of the competition, and I’m here to share some of my favourite online resources with you.

Blogging Bride

Wedding blogs are a dynamic, easy to access and free source of wedding planning know how, with a personal touch. There’s a blog out there to suit almost every bride, so bookmark your favourites and return daily for a rapid turnover of ideas, inspiration and tips.

My Top Clicks

Brides Up North (well, obvs.)  – our site and branded bridal events are a must for local ladies who want to see just what the fantastic wedding industry suppliers on their doorstep can do. Every fabulous feature on Brides Up North is sourced from the regions, be it a supplier showcase, styled shoot or real wedding.

Rock N Roll Bride – a cute and colourful site packed full of diverse and different wedding inspiration. If you fancy trying your hand at blogging yourself, creator Kat also runs courses for aspiring writers at her worldwide Blogacademy.

Festival Brides – if you’d rather host your own “wed-stock” party under canvas than hire a stately home, this is the blog for you. Focusing on outdoor and festival weddings, the site is a little bit of summer sunshine delivered to your blog reader daily.

Appy Days

There are apps galore for wedding planning on the move. From finding your dream dress to keeping track of your gift list, a few clever downloads can make the whole process a little less daunting. Take a break from Candy Crush and try out some bridal apps that might just save you time and money.

My Top Clicks

WedPics – An alternative to disposable cameras, this nifty tool gathers all your guests’ pics and videos in one private place – and gives you a record of your big day through your nearest and dearest’s eyes.

AppyCouple – A fully personalised online space that your guests can access to obtain all the key details for your celebration including addresses, gift list info, directions, dress code and timings. They can even RSVP and make menu choices, leaving all the information to hand when table planning hysteria sets in.

Find Your Dream Wedding Dress  – A fashionista’s fantasy – browse different design features and come up with a selection of gowns that meet any given criteria, then find the shops that stock them. The dress hunt made easy.

Social Club

Use social media to network your way from engagement to altar. Here you can get real time responses to your queries and supplier searches on a no obligation basis.

My Top Clicks

FacebookMost industry professionals keep their Facebook page more up to date than their brochure or websites, making it easier for you to get a sense for their current work.

Pinterest – If you love a mood board, you’ll adore this image sharing site, also available as a smartphone app. Build online boards by pinning your favourite wedding inspiration images to build up a visual idea of your wedding style. And if you don’t want to spoil the surprise – simple – you can now make secret boards too!

Twitter – You’ll find that the wedding industry is live and loud on the Twitter airwaves: keen to offer advice, sell their services and attract new customers.

Like Me, Like Me, Like Me! Find Brides Up North On Facebook

September 7th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

I’m off beautifying myself and double checking scripts today, in preparation to host the first ever North of England Wedding Awards.  I am sure that I will be reporting back on progress throughout the day at Twitter and Facebook, trying to keep those dreaded nerves at bay.  Watch out for a blog post (and frock update!) coming up soon.

.

.

.

.

In the meantime, I thought that I would rudely hijack the wedding blog this morning to ask you if you like me, if you really like me, and if not, why not?  Wait.  Don’t answer that!

.

I mean over on Facebook of course!

.

I am pleased to report that unique hits here at Brides Up North are higher than currently ever – hooray! – we have well over 7,000 followers on Twitter and that judging from pre-registrations (and an absolutely fantastic turnout at our first show of the season last weekend at Nostell Priory) that the Brides Up North wedding exhibitions this Autumn look set to be a huge success.  So I think you like me…

.

But have you liked the Brides Up North Facebook page yet?

.

.

.

.

This isn’t just one huge plea for popularity (I promise!), and our numbers over at Facebook are hugely swelling day on day (I’ll admit, I neglected Facebook a little at the beginning of this Brides Up North journey) but because I want to make you aware of the fabulous Brides Up North community that is growing over there.

.

Facebook is always the place I’ll head when I want to share brand new news, sneak peeks or breaking stories with brides – it’s quick, easy, and it gets the gossip off my chest.  I really do feel like a little community is hanging out over there – and often you engage more and leave more comments there than on the blog itself!  Please note: I love blog comments (and would encourage you not to be shy and leave more – especially for my real brides!) but it’s nice to hear from readers over on Facebook in real time too – and it’s quick, easy and gets your gossip off your chest!  Note to self: it seems that billion pound businesses are built on quickness and ease.

.

.

.

.

I’ll also share news of events, breaking featured supplier discounts and giveaways, brand new competitions and the like over there first (and sometimes only there!)  A recent competition to win a free copy of The Wedding Diaries was posted on Facebook and closed half an hour later, with all ten copies snapped up.  You really have to be in it to win it, it seems.

.

.

.

.

I love to hear your news too – leave me a message on the Brides Up North Facebook page wall, or send me a direct message.  It’s just another great way of staying in touch.

.

And you might meet some of the fabulous wedding suppliers who hang out there too!  Mates rates!?

.

So, I’m feeling a little dirty, like I’ve just sold my soul to Mark Zuckerberg or something, but before you put down that morning cuppa, click through to my page (or search for Brides Up North once logged into Facebook tonight at home if your work has got mean and blocked it!), LIKE the page, and let the good times roll.  And why not let some of your engaged friends know about the site too?

.

Spread the LIKE!

.

I’m off to wash my Facebook loving mouth out with soap.

For Japan With Love

March 30th, 2011 | Julia Braime

Unite to Help

.

.

You may have noticed that there was a Bloggers Day of Silence on 18 March 2011, to raise money in aid of the terrible crisis following the Tsunami in Japan.

.

You can see the post here.

.

Lucia, from Utterly Engaged, who launched the campaign, emailed Brides Up North this week.  She said:

.

The response "For Japan With Love" has been overwhelmingly amazing! We could not have asked for more.  We, at Utterly Engaged, truly appreciate all the support and love.  Thank you ever so much for being a part of the Bloggers Day of Silence. Because of the Day of Silence we were able to to raise $50,000 to have 50 Shelter Boxes help 500 people in Japan and other disaster areas. And you played a huge part in
making this happen! As of today, we are at $60,297!

.

Wow! A huge well done to each and every one of you that clicked through my link and donated to ShelterBox.

.

.

Thing is, Japan still needs your love.  Utterly Engaged has created one more last campaign to raise awareness on 30 – 31 March 2011.
