We’re filling your Thursday afternoon full of pretty with a swoon-worthy styled shoot captured in the North East.
Shot by Andrew Sturrock, this shoot provides stunning inspiration for a bold and beautiful bridal look, including the dress, hair, makeup and bouquet, all topped off with one of the most fabulous floral crowns we’ve ever seen.
The rich berry tones could also help spark colour scheme ideas, with the romantic red, plum and pink hues lending themselves to celebrations of all seasons.

andrew says: This shoot provided a great opportunity for each of the suppliers to get together and let their creative ideas flow, with a model Caitlin showcasing their talents.
As one of the top wedding venues in the North East, Matfen Hall’s grounds, gardens and views over the golf course made the perfect back drop for the shoot.
We shot close to Valentine’s Day and so decided to go with a loved-up romantic theme – hence the pink and red flowers! The stunning arrangements were created by florist Becca Angus of Charisma, based in Wallsend. She decided to go for the traditional red Rose with a pop of colour using unusual Freaky Avalanche Roses, Gloriosa and some beautiful wild foliage.
In terms of the hair and beauty for Caitlin, we wanted to stick to a fairly natural look and let the flower crown be a striking focal point and make our ‘bride’ really stand out. Jenny of Make-Up By Jenny Green took care makeup, with a bright lip to match the flowers. Meanwhile, stylist Kelly McFall of Timeless Mobile Hairdressing, created Caitlin’s tumbling down do.

We’re fortunate to host our Luxury Wedding Shows at some of the north’s finest wedding venues, including The Mansion in Leeds – a truly gorgeous stately home set within Roundhay Park.
Not only is this venue beautiful on both the inside and out, but it also boasts first class catering and wedding planning services provided by hospitality and event experts Dine.
Ahead of our spring wedding fair at The Mansion this Sunday (which we are SUPER excited about!), the Dine team invited us to experience the incredible food and service that they deliver to wedding couples at the venue during a Dine Ambassadors’ Dinner.

Joined by fellow wedding professionals, we were told to expect an evening of “food & flowers” – two of our very favourite things – and so we were highly intrigued as to what lay in store.
Much to our delight, the event began with a floral crown making workshop, hosted by wedding floristry specialist Twisted Willow. Owner director (and all-round flower wizard) Joanna Cairns demonstrated creative uses for the armfuls of flowers, berries and foliage that span across the tables in The Mansion’s Garden Room Café, before we were let loose on the roaming piles of roses, ranunculus and hydrangeas.
Each of the ladies present, including ourselves, fully embraced the challenge by carefully wiring the stunning blooms to create some really bold and beautiful designs. To brides-to-be out there toying with the option of a flower crown for their big day, we simply say, do it! Nothing feels quite as pretty (or strangely, as empowering) as a beautiful ring of florals to top off your attire!
After a sea of selfies to show off our horticultural creations, it was onto the ‘food’ element of the evening, and boy we’re we in for a treat! Bucking the new year trend of abstinence, the canapes and three-course meal followed a theme of indulgence with chocolate cleverly incorporated into every course.
A treat for all the senses, each stage of the meal was beautifully presented and the aromas were nothing short of divine, not to mention the taste!
After canapes of venison tartare on chocolate spätzle discs; ham hock and smoked Wensleydale croquette with apple gel, and Caprini goats cheese cones with tomato and dill concase and fig and balsamic caviar, we took our seats at beautifully dressed tables in The Mansion’s Colonnades Room for the main event.
Each course was served with paired wines, supplied by Hoults wine merchants, to educate and excite our taste buds further. To start, we served crab and saffron risotto, pan fried scallops and tempura soft shell crab, followed by a main course of fallow deer with spiced Umbrain lentils, choucroute, smoked kale and chocolate jus. And as if we weren’t already in food heaven, the best was yet to come – dessert! As part of an ‘indulgence’ menu we were particularly looking forward to the sweet course, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Dark chocolate and rosemary tart with fennel ice-cream, orange sherbet and baked white chocolate – pure pudding perfection!
The whole evening was a true treat that showcased The Mansion’s stunning rooms, whilst inviting us to learn a new skill and sample the incredible cuisine created by Dine’s awarding-winning chefs. Foodies and fans of fine interiors alike will fall head over heels for this wonderful venue as we do time and time again!

I’m all for making a wedding your own and that’s exactly what Keli and Pete did when they tied the knot (and their hands) at Windy Harbour Farm Hotel in the beautiful Peak District. The couple not only made their reception individual, but the ceremony itself too by having a secular service that reflected their journey to marriage as well as a handfasting with an elemental blessing.
The stunning outdoor setting gave way to carefree fun with the newlyweds and their guests enjoying garden games, afternoon tea and personalised beverages before burning up the dance floor in the evening.
One particular individual element that I adore about this wedding is that Pete had two best women! Breaking down yet another traditional wedding barrier, I think it’s fabulous that Pete asked those closest to him to fulfil the honourable role, regardless of their gender.
Keli said: We got engaged in the summer of 2011, the same summer we’d left our lives in London and gone travelling around England in a tent for three months. Pete and I had finally made it home, to my parents, where we would start to look for a new house and start building our new life up north.
We decided to take advantage of the last sunny day in September and go for a final walk in Castleton that included Mam Tor. Unfortunately our map reading skills were a little exhausted from the travelling all summer and we couldn’t seem to find the main path leading to the summit. So – fearful of never getting there – we turned off the beaten path and started up the side. Turns out we picked one of the steepest slopes to climb; we were exhausted and almost gave up halfway but Pete was persistent. When we got up there is was rather windy and rather crowded with people – which was not part of Pete’s plan – so we moved over the crest of the hill to sit out of the wind looking out over the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. After some lazy minutes Pete asked me to close my eyes, gave me a kiss and then produced the ring. I think my first response was “Are you sure?” And then lots of crying and laughing followed, and of course my answer, Yes!
Windy Harbour Farm Hotel was the first venue we visited and only because it was just up the road from our new home in Glossop, Derbyshire. However as soon as we walked in both of us were struck by how friendly and how right it felt. The size was perfect for the 50 to 80 guests we planned to invite and the garden area was beautifully kept, which was essential as we knew we wanted an outdoor ceremony with our mixture of pagan and secular traditions. Our country fair theme would need to include things like hay bales and garden games so we were lucky to find owners who were not only happy for us to do all this, but also happy to source things like the hay bales for us.
We both wanted a ceremony that was unique and individual to us, more so than a church or civil ceremony can be. Added to that, I’m a Pagan and was determined to get married outside, surrounded by the natural world. We found Kate Gee, a Humanist celebrant who was happy to incorporate elements of Pagan ritual into a secular service that reflected our lives and the journey that had led us to the moment of marriage. We still exchanged rings and used vows similar to those in the Common Book of Prayer. We also had a handfasting with an elemental blessing, undertaken by one of our maids of honour. Everyone commented on how poignant and moving the ceremony was and we couldn’t have been happier with the way we were able to seal our marriage.
As soon as we picked the date in May we knew we’d have a May Day themed wedding. We both love the May Day holiday and spent many years travelling to Hastings and various other places to celebrate it. So we knew we wanted lots of ribbons, greenery, games and folk music; as you would find at a May Day festival. We didn’t have a particular colour theme but we did end up using dark ivy green as the main contrasting colour. We also used a simple bright blue, yellow and red combination to accent it all – these mostly popped up as ribbons.
I wore ‘Fadella’ by Cymbeline which I found at The White Room in Sheffield. It was nothing like the dress I’d imagined myself wearing to be wed but it was the one dress that made me feel like a bride. Being light and not too bulky it made perfect sense for the venue and the outdoors, informal nature of the whole day. In the end the lace matched Pete’s country suit perfectly and the small train meant it was great to dance in.
Pete wanted something that was quite ‘countryside’ and immediately thought of a tweed jacket which he ended up getting from Next. He wore it with a grey waistcoat and brown trousers from Debenhams. His tie was also from Next. The two fathers wore the same jacket and tie as Pete but created their own combos so they didn’t all look the same.
Although untraditional Pete had best women – Zoe and Lyvia, two of our closest friends from university. The two of them and Pete were a very close trio throughout our time there and they both coached him through a lot of good times, bad times and rather mad times. They wore navy blue dresses from Next with matching taupe shoes.
I knew from the start that I didn’t want lots of bridesmaids as choosing from all my friends and family would mean all the female guests would have ended up in the wedding party. Instead I asked two of my closest friends to be maids of honour on the agreement they would be available to help out with all the wedding planning and stop me from succumbing to the dreaded Bridezilla too often in the run up to the wedding. Their dresses proved very difficult to find, especially as they both live quite far away and work a lot and we had to take into account the two best men, who were also wearing dresses. In the end we found two light summer dresses in Dorothy Perkins and they were the perfect complement to my lace dress and the best womens’ navy blue dresses.
Having good photos was vital to our day and we were keen to find a photographer who would fit in with the whole event and not feel like an outsider. We wanted mostly informal shots and pictures that took in the beautiful landscapes around us. Jon Rouston provided all that and more, giving us relaxed shots of our guests enjoying themselves as well as glimpses of the day we never would have seen otherwise. He also created some gorgeous portraits of us using a variety of local landscapes.

The start of every season always begins with a flurry of freelance commissions here at Brides Up North, and days spent with my head buried in my laptop feeling like “a proper writer”. Of course, the end product is rarely very different from producing features for my own blog, but when it’s for someone else’s publication (and they’ve entrusted you with one, two or even four of their precious editorial pages) and it’s actually going to be “in print”, the stakes somehow seem higher.
Respected North East bridal title Belle Bridal Magazine celebrated their fifth birthday this season, and so, when they bestowed upon me the honour of selecting the hots and the nots of the wedding world for spring 2014, I was thrilled. But oh, the pressure!
So, with a lot of industry knowledge behind me, and a little bit of crystal ball gazing, these were my predictions for the trends that’ll be topping the charts (and sliding off the scale) at a wedding near you soon. Tell me, are you incorporating any of these trends into your big day?
Blame Jay Gatsby, but flamboyance is back in a big way. A little party never killed nobody, but why do things by halves? After these mean recession years, we’re ready for some fun. Expect heavy embellishments, cascading blooms and excess all areas.

It started with the tipi, and now there’s an outdoor option for almost every theme. Whether it’s a Scandinavian hat, Mongolian yurt or Bedouin tent, it’s still chic to say I do under canvas. Just remember to budget for a generator too!

Amongst all the usual layers of lace and tulle a new breed of wedding gown is emerging: clean lines, sharp edges and super cool. Closer to catwalk trends than a Royal Wedding, these frocks are for the slick chicks who don’t want to leave their personalities by the church door. Choose bold shapes and structured satin (not a sequin in sight) for strut-your-stuff wedding day style.

Platinum will always be precious, but all the best dressed ring fingers are going for gold this season. Romantics should try rose gold and pave diamonds for an on trend look that’s forever timeless.

Colour Me Pretty
Adding a touch of complimentary colour to your wedding day wardrobe is nothing new, but this is a trend that refuses to fade. Pastels are huge on the catwalks and in the bridal boutiques for 2014 and designers are upping the ante with all over washes of warmth or layered ombre lace effects. Go on, live life in colour! If a dip dye wedding dress isn’t for you, you can still give a nod to this pretty trend with colourful stationery or blushing blooms.

Forget the humble tiara, 2014 is the year that bridal headwear gets big and bold. From glittering bunny ears and feather head-dresses to vibrant flower garlands, the fashion forward bride will dare to decorate herself in colour and originality. Still not sure? Stick to simple for the ceremony and style things up for the after party!

This evening I’m sharing a pretty little gem of a styled bridal shoot from my Featured Suppliers Walker & Walker Photography. Call me fickle (and you’d be right) but yesterday I readying my gloves, scarf and bobble hat with glee, and tonight, I’m wishing for summer. That’s what a flower crown will do to you…
Ben of Walker & Walker says: This shoot was a joint collaborative project between Walker & Walker and Wayside Flower and was produced with an audience so potential clients could see how we work.The shoot was staged at The Little Organic Bakery in Bridlington and we hand picked the venue for the colourful selections of flora, foliage and rustic walls that had an English secret garden charm.
Our model was Sophie. She was chosen by us as she’s curvy and demure with beautiful long dark hair and showcased the vintage white wedding dress, floral head wear, shrug, underskirt, shoes and jewellery supplied by Wayside Flower beautifully.
The floral hand tied spray was made up by Lynn Walker from Next Flowers and the vintage wedding ring belonged to Lynn’s great grandmother. Lynn also prepared the props and set styling.

Sometimes in the wedding World, it seems like everything is always more, more, more. More lace, more skirts, more flowers, more guests, more details… more money. So sometimes, it’s nice to strip everything right back and rejoice in the simple.
This Friday morning, I bring you a small, simple and absolutely beautiful little styled bridal shoot from a group of Yorkshire wedding suppliers whose work I really rate (some of them are even Brides Up North Featured Suppliers). So grab a cuppa and a KitKat, and prepare for something blissful.
Hayley of The Harrogate Wedding Lounge says: The initial idea for the shoot was very ethereal so the location on the Yorkshire Moors was perfect! We set up shop in a lovely warm local inn to do Hair, Makeup and dressing before heading out into the wind and rain. Our beautiful model Amy was a true professional and coped well with the difficult conditions.
We wanted to demonstrate a more simple laid back look and what you can achieve with your bridal look by adding different accessories including belts, shoes, headwear, flowers and dashes of colour. The gowns we used were beautiful yet very simplistic.
We chose Mistletoe from the Mia Mia collection by Alan Hannah and the Ghislaine Dress from the Enzoani collection. Mistletoe is a stylish long sleeved Silk Chiffon gown with pretty covered buttons and a flowing sash. The Ghislaine is a full skirted lace and tulle gown with a beautiful beaded belt. we teamed this gown with a fabulous lace edge cape by Joyce Jackson. Both gowns are available in my boutique, The Harrogate Wedding Lounge.
The flowers on the shoot were from Emma’s Home and Garden and featured beautiful details used in unique ways. We styled three looks including: an arc of pale pink astilbe; an asymmetrical head piece of lisianthus, lavender, craspedia, gypsophilaand wax flower and a flower crown of lisianthus, craspedia, lavender, tree fern, and dried protea plus a simple hand tied posy of faded lilac limonium finished with vintage velvet ribbon.
Hair and Makeup on the day was styled by the super talented Victoria Farr Hair & Make Up Specialist.
Victoria says: The brief was to create a look that is different to what we have seen on this type of styled shoot with lots of creativity. Think ‘Vogue’ with statement lips and eye liner!
Our model had the most beautiful elfin features and short blonde pixie hair which is perfect to let the makeup speak for itself. Our first look was to show the eyeliner and using lashes on the lower lash line instead of the top, which created the illusion of wider eyes and using an almost white colour on the lips with a matt finish kept the look editorial. The lashes were removed for our second look which concentrated on Amy’s lips. Using the floral arrangements as inspiration and our location, a dark plum was used on the lips to stain them, giving a natural just bitten finish.
Jess of Jess Petrie Photography says: In regards to overall styling I always free-style… it’s the way I work! It helps me have more creative freedom on the shoot. When something is planned expectations are under-met and/or “panic mode” sets in if something is out of place, unexpected, or different. To work on a shoot I have to be calm and embrace things as they happen naturally. The worst thing you can do is over think it!
Everyone had an input on the overall styling, which is what I prefer, as I like to involve the team. It’s not all about the photographer, everyone is bringing the shoot together and working equally as hard.
We are trying to help brides bring out a little creativity in their overall bridal look and feel and by using matching accessories i.e belts, flowers, shoes and so on, you can style a dress in a very unique and individual way.
The colours are always important, especially for great pictures. I would advise brides on choosing pastel colours for their accessories and flowers. It’s nice to create a colour theme throughout and have complimenting colour schemes towards your dress and venue.
