Behind The Wedding Blog: The Brides Up North Christmas Party At The Stunning Thorp Perrow!

January 7th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

So. I’m a little confused.  It appears to be January 7th, the Christmas decorations have come down (in fact, due to our home and office move, ours never went up – sob!) and I’m not sure if I can’t quite believe that it’s already January 7th, or can’t quite believe that it’s only January 7th.

This Christmas season and (especially) this first week in January has been the busiest time ever here at Brides Up North HQ. And we are loving it!  Visits to the blog are looking seriously healthy (hello to our new readers, welcome!) and numbers over on our lovely Twitter and Facebook pages are swelling.  We look set to pip the 10,000 point soon over on Twitter!  Wow.  Join the party over there too!

.

After a busy few weeks behind the scenes we also have some amazing new talents to add to our Featured Supplier Directory over the next few weeks and introduce to you here on these pages too.  Brides Up North would be nothing, nada, without the fabulous regional industry that supports it so wholeheartedly, and I am thrilled to be able to spread the news about these great wedding suppliers right on your door step.  Forget that train ticket to London, spend the cash on sparkly shoes instead!  That’s my kind of budgeting.

.

December was also a very social month for us at Brides Up North.  We hosted our first ever Christmas party at the wonderful Thorp Perrow, which was an unbelievably marvellous occasion – more on that in a minute – and also threw open exhibitor bookings for our brilliant set of luxury wedding exhibitions at hand picked venues across the regions for 2013.  You can read more about our choice of dates and venues – and get involved – by clicking here

.

.

January will see a little more hibernation from me, as I get ready to welcome our first Brides Up North baby in a couple of months time, and that unfortunately means no jaunts to the capital to see who picks up the prizes in the two awards ceremonies that I was honoured to judge this season – The Wedding Industry Awards (this Wednesday) and The Wedding Ideas Magazine Awards (this Friday).  Aside from the fact that I have no sparkles and sequins to fit – and only sparkles and sequins will do – Champagne is off the menu and I get a little cranky past 9pm these days.  I hope that you all have a wonderful time and I’ll see you next year – when Champagne, sparkles and sequins will be very much back on the agenda! I only judged the Southern categories and those that didn’t include my Featured Suppliers, so I am rooting for my home grown talents to bring home the shiny mantelpiece furniture! Go guys!

.

.

Just because I’m being a little quieter this month, that doesn’t mean that things here on the wedding blog will be!  If anything, I’m overcompensating (I’m like that).  I have an action packed schedule of gorgeous ready for you and am putting the finishing touches to those inspiration packed bridal events that I mentioned earlier.  Take note: this season is going to be good.

.

.

Ruth Mitchell Photography

.

.

I also am joined in our new office by our first member of staff (say hello to Kate, I’ll be introducing her properly later on) who’ll be helping with bookings and generally being scarily efficient and organised, so at last I have someone to bounce my (sometimes crazy) ideas off!  If you come across her, as always, give her a kiss from me. Thing’s ain’t slowing down around these parts.  Why would they?  We’re Northern… we like challenges!

Before we get too excited with all things new though, lets take a moment to look back and recap on the fantastic Brides Up North Christmas Party, with some pretty pictures from friend of the wedding blog, Ruth Mitchell Photography.

.

On a cold, foggy night in December, over 150 (!) of the regional wedding industry’s finest (some travelling for up to four hours to be there – you guys are amazing) descended upon the beautiful stately pile that is CWC Events’ latest baby, and brand new Brides Up North luxury wedding venue, Thorp Perrow, North Yorkshire.

.

Brides to be: if you haven’t booked your venue yet – you HAVE to check this place out.  Contact Clive at CWC Events who not only knows how to prep the perfect “advanced canapé”, but also has extremely good taste in wedding venues and will be more than happy to assist.

We came, we cocktailed, we quaffed champagne, we feasted on those gorgeous canapés, we posed, we caught up and we partied.  And – I don’t say this lightly – it was truly fabulous (and very Christmassy).

.

Massive thanks must go to the superbly talented Joanna at Twisted Willow Floristry, who worked tirelessly to turn the beautiful grand rooms into a floral paradise with her own “twisted” take on Christmas.  Twinkling trees, blood red blooms, flickering candles, piles of juicy apples, pale pink roses entwined around storm lanterns and a rather marvellous twiggy amaryllis Christmas tree festooned the place and created a wonderland.  Just the look we were going for!

Live carols at the piano along with the dulcet Christmas swing tones of Glen Roughead (he’s seriously good) filled the air, followed up later with classic crackling Christmas and party tunes from Vintage 78 DJs’ decks.  Looking for music for your big day?  Look no further than these two original acts, whether it’s smooth swing or an authentic retro vibe that you are going for.  You can catch both of them at some of our Brides Up North Luxury Wedding Exhibitions this season.

.

Kelly’s Event Boutique lent their event dressing skills to provide some poser tables around which we could, er, pose, and Robineau brought along the tastiest mince pies to compliment CWC Events’ smorgasbord of delights and spicy mulled wine.

.

Steven from Forever Film was there to capture the action as it unfolded – more from him later on – and the girls from Limelight Photobooth Hire brought their roomy booth to capture the sillier moments.  Catch up on those photos by clicking here

All in all, a cracking night in at Thorp Perrow, and one that I think the wedding industry will remember for a while.  As I fell into bed – absolutely cream crackered – at 2:30am, I felt really proud to know such a bunch of people who know how to party so fabulously.

.

Until next time!

.

If you would like to see this amazing wedding venue for yourself, and it’s even better in the summer, then make sure to diarise our first ever Brides Up North Luxury Wedding Exhibition at Thorp Perrow on Sunday 12th May 2013.  Over 40 of the region’s finest luxury suppliers will be in attendance in our marquee, and the house will be open for viewing too.

And Action! Choosing Your Wedding Videographer

January 4th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

You’re nearly there… just Friday to go and then it’s the weekend.  Thank goodness.  Maybe it’s the weight of all those resolutions on our shoulders – or perhaps the weight of that rock sparkling on your finger – but why does the first week back at work after Christmas always feel like such a marathon (especially when there is wed-min and dress shopping to be done)?!

.

Speaking of wedmin, our regular guest blogger Rachel of Mosaic Brides knows just how to handle all of that - and, handily, is here to offer her expert advice to you too.  After a little Christmas break she is back at her best with her two cents on choosing a wedding videographer.  Get ready for your close up.

.

And action…

.

Rachel says:  It may sound a little sad coming from a single girl but I’ve become totally obsessed with wedding videos.

.

Holly & Toan from hdmoments.com on Vimeo

.

.

At one time the suggestion of a wedding videographer sent shivers down my spine as thoughts of shaky home video productions sprung to mind but having recently taken the time to explore the wonderful world of wedding videos I can now honestly say most productions give me shivers of a different kind.

.

Dispelling thoughts of cringe-a-minute amateur footage, professional videographers produce seamless, high quality and personal productions which reflect the individuality of a couple as well as the true beauty and emotion of their wedding (reader warning: such productions should be watched only when armed with a box of tissues).

.

The Brides Up North Yorkshire Tweet Up 2012 by the amazing Steven at Forever Film

.

Granted a good videographer comes at a price but also provides a stunning solution to the common complaint of brides and grooms that the day passes too quickly and they miss out on important elements as they can’t be in two places at once.

.

While photographers are amazing at capturing wedding day magic as a timeless set of stills (and I wouldn’t swap that for the World!), videographers can go beyond static images. They capture the essence of a wedding day through both visual and audio footage to give couples, as well as their friends and family, the opportunity to look at their wedding from a different perspective and relive the special day time and time again.

.

Research, research and a little bit more research is the best way to find a videographer that is right for you and your wedding. Get online and watch lots of show reels/example videos on lots of different videographers’ websites to get an idea of the talent that’s out there and what they can offer.  Ask yourself:

.

What style is the wedding video shot in?

.

Generally wedding videos are shot in one of two styles; cinematic and documentary. Cinematic is more posed and edited for dramatic effect and mood whilst documentary is a fly-on-the- wall style, simply capturing the day as it unfolds. While some professionals will stick to just one style others will use a combination of the two.

.

Tiffany & TJ – From New York to Ireland from Deneemotion Wedding Cinema on Vimeo

.

.

How good is the quality?

.

Watching example videos will give you an idea of the quality a videographer’s work and the equipment they use. Those who use high quality equipment should be less intrusive on the day and will produce a polished final product with clear picture, good lighting, complementary colour and crisp sound.

.

.

How much of the day is captured?

.

Most couples request a videographer’s services all day to document the wedding in full, focusing on the main events as well as those all important little touches. Alternatively some couples may be looking for a videographer to capture just specific parts of the day in full such as the vows and the speeches.

.

Anjali & Ben – Loch Ness Wedding from Deneemotion Wedding Cinema on Vimeo

.

.

How well has the production been edited?

.

Experienced wedding videographers will use a variety of professional techniques when editing in order to deliver a final production that flows like a feature film. Watching examples of their work will give you an idea of their capabilities. Look at how well one scene moves to another, are sound bites from the day included or is the footage just set to music? Is the music complementary or overbearing/distracting? Are any special effects?

.

.

How do they work on the wedding day?

.

Ask what equipment they will be using on the day and if/how it will interfere with the wedding. Most professionals use small unobtrusive, high-tech digital cameras that are lightweight, mobile and don’t require extra lighting meaning minimal disruptions to the proceedings. You might also want to enquire how many cameras will be used – while one is not generally enough to capture all the action, more than three might look like a Hollywood film set.

.

Amy & Tim – Highlights from Forever Film on Vimeo

.

.

What do you get for your money?

.

Just like photographers, videographers offer a variety of packages to suit different budgets. Look at what’s included in each package such as how many copies of the film you will receive and in what format. Most include an edited feature film showing the best parts of the day – as an added bonus some will also include the ceremony and speeches in full. Further extras can include a wedding trailer showing a snapshot of the big day and/or an engagement shoot where a couple are interviewed prior to the wedding about their relationship and what they love about each other which is then edited into the main wedding production.

.

That’s a wrap!

Nice To Tweet You! The Official Photographs From The Brides Up North Tweet Up Yorkshire!

June 27th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

.

So, this time last week I was busy lugging boxes of props and goodies, cupcake towers, bay trees, hydrangeas, giant silver urns and wicker hearts up the rather magnificent staircase (below) in readiness for the descent of well over 100 of the Yorkshire wedding industry’s finest upon the Brides Up North Tweet Up Yorkshire 2012 at Dine Services’ The Mansion, Leeds!

.

I was also feeling just a little bit nervous (thank you to my friends Sarah and Shona from Leafy Couture and the wonderful India Hobson – who took all the beautiful photographs that you see before you – for talking me down!) It’s always super scary planning and hosting a party for your peers and although I had a completely sold out guest list in one hand, the twelve year old inside me was still whispering “What if nobody comes..?”

.

But it turns out that you like me, you really like me (or you like buttercream frosting, one of the two) since    all the planning, plotting and heavy lifting was well worth it and my industry friends and colleagues showed up in scores to raise a glass, feast on canapés, cake pops and cupcakes, pull some poses and generally get their chat on.

If you are new to the wedding blog, and are wondering what the beejezus a Tweet Up is, then let me explain.  Once a year or so I like to say a big thank you to all my sponsors and colleagues who have supported Brides Up North and it’s message so wholeheartedly since it’s inception (Join the Northern Revolution!) and these events – supported by my friends at Wedding Ideas Magazine – are my way of doing just that.

.

They are not for profit events solely for everyone to get together in beautiful and inspiring surroundings, knock back a few drinks, enjoy themselves and hopefully forge some long lasting business connections (although no one’s forcing anything – this isn’t speed dating) in a relaxed environment that will last for seasons to come.

The whole reason that Brides Up North works for my sponsors and is enjoyed by my readers (hello, you!) is that it’s almost like chatting with a friend – just one who never gets sick of talking about weddings!  I’m here to refer, suggest, enlighten and basically show you just how fabulous the Northern wedding industry is.  Everything I post is at my own discretion and although I promote my sponsors on these pages I won’t take on a sponsor or feature anything that I don’t personally like or believe in.  It’s like one big conversation.

.

I do think it’s important though to carry on the online conversation in real life – and that’s why I think events like these – to let me and other members of the industry connect together and share ideas and recommendations – are so vital to the success of Brides Up North and to the industry as a whole.

.

After some lovely bubbly fuelled chats last week I have so many new ideas and avenues to explore and hopefully as a result lots of fabulous new content and very talented supplier suggestions to share with my bride to be readers – watch this space people!

.

Speaking of conversations, there is a constant one going over on the Brides Up North Facebook page, where we are building a real community of brides and suppliers and a great forum to interchange ideas.  Come over and join us today!  In addition, don’t be shy!  I would also love to see more debate and discussion on the actual blog too – don’t be afraid to leave your comments on blog posts – this blog is written for you:  I love to hear from you!

To the wonderful, efficient and ever perfect Dine Services  team – thank you as always for looking after us so well.  The team are the best in the business and I believe that their venues are among the best in Yorkshire.  For a gorgeous, perfectly catered, classy and stress free wedding day look no further than this super squad and their beautiful collection of stately homes, castles and houses.

.

I count myself seriously lucky to work with Dine hosting the Brides Up North Wedding Exclusives (the Autumn dates for which have just been released – click the banner at the top of the wedding blog to reserve your VIP bride to be goody bag) and can’t wait for the next season.

Next up, huge snaps for the super talented India of India Hobson Weddings who created such a beautiful photographic record of the event.  This lady has massive talents and anyone looking for the prettiest wedding pictures should give her a call.  You will not be disappointed.

.

The ever lovely Steven of Forever Film was also there to capture all the action on film… big love to him and more from him later…

Massive effort on the part of Sarah and her team at Leafy Couture meant that the Mansion room and staircase were transformed into an indoor garden, bursting with colour and scent.  The Leafy Couture girls are exceptionally creative florists and super friendly to boot – working from a very slim brief from a busy wedding blogger they created floral displays to die for.  I’d recommend them wholeheartedly for your big day – whether it’s a huge affair or small soiree!

Helping the Leafy team to dress the venue was Alex from Simply Bows & Chair Covers, a company that works right across the Country to beautify your wedding day furniture.  Alex used dreamy shades of turquoise, pale pink and purple to create a soft and float Midsummer’s look.

Limelight Photobooth Hire were the absolute hit of the evening with their amazing (and brand new!) flocked vintage style booth.  With dozens of props and endless patience, the ladies looked on as we all – getting more and more merry – struck our crazy poses.  For a fun way to tackle your guestbook and break the ice, give these girls a shout.

Another man that everyone was talking about was the super slick Glen Roughead (the new King of Swing) – find him on Twitter here – who kept us entertained with his rat pack perfect set.  Seriously, someone give this man a recording contract!  I’ll be screaming in the front row!

*Waves* From The Sofa: In Recovery Following The Brides Up North Tweet Ups!

June 22nd, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Good afternoon!

.

India Hobson Weddings for Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog

.

.

I’ve been in recovery this morning after two days ON TOUR (I like that, it makes me feel a little bit Stacee Jaxx) for the Brides Up North Tweet Up wedding industry networking events.

.

.

Tom Cruise is Stacee Jaxx for W Magazine June 2012

See the likeness? Ok, maybe not.

.

.

I say “networking events”, when what I really mean is huge, beautiful parties with all my industry friends.  I have had the very, very best time over the last two days, seeing all my hard work organising something bigger and better than last time – like you do! – come to fruition.

.

A massive thank you to all who gave up their own time to help to create something really special, including:  Simply Bows & Chair Covers, Laurel Weddings, All Wrapped Up Events, The Cheshire Cat Cake Company, Lilybud Cupcakes, Fonix Music, Martin Hambleton Photography, The Belle Epoque, Dine, Leafy Couture, India Hobson Weddings, Forever Film, The Whimsical Cake Company, Buttercream Cupcakes, Glen Roughead, Icing & Lace and Wedding Ideas Magazine

.

.

You actually rock.  For real.

.

.

India Hobson Weddings for Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog

.

.

But with a manic schedule, lots of chatting to lots of people, lots of time up ladders, lots of time lugging enormous boxes, props and flowers, lots of miles clocked up and lots and lots of standing up in ridiculously high heels, comes an absolute energy fail.  Arriving home after last night’s event – and a drive back across the Pennines at 3am – stone cold sober and (despite all the beautiful canapés that I inhaled) completely starving, I felt totally wiped out.  But it was totally worth it.

.

.

India Hobson Weddings for Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog

.

.

Flash forward and after an unheard of before morning off – whoop whoop! – with a huge lie in, a mountain of hot buttered toast, a bubble bath and a blow dry I feel restored and ready to go.  So I’ll be back bright and early tomorrow to round of a week of gorgeous here on the wedding blog (I haven’t left you hanging have I?!) with a gorgeous Real Wedding from Georgina Harrison Photography – watch out for it.

.

.

India Hobson Weddings for Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog

.

.

All the Tweet Up photographs, a little film and a full round up coming soon.  And boy, do I have some pretty lined up for you next week.  Watch this space.

February 8th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Did you see this first part of this gorgeous styled bridal fashion shoot this morning on the wedding blog?  If not, be sure to scroll down, you are in for a treat.

.

For now, let’s head back to Masham, North Yorkshire, where I spent the day with Cat Hepple Photography, The Harrogate Wedding Lounge, Forever Film, Victoria Farr Hair & Makeup Artist and two rather gorgeous models, creating these beautiful images.

.

And just when you thought it was going so well for our couple…

.

(Told you I’d saved the best for last!)

And a quick reminder that our gorgeous groom NICHOLAS SHAW is a finalist in the TOP MODEL UK competition, being judged at the London Hilton on 17th March 2012.  We think he’s going to go all the way, but you can help to make it a certainty by taking a moment to vote for him by clicking here.  Go on!  He’ll love you forever!

Its Here! We’re Gonna Rock Down To Electric Avenue – A Styled Bridal Fashion Shoot

.

A couple of weeks ago Brides Up North took part in a very special collaborative photo shoot with a group of amazing Yorkshire wedding suppliers, on location in the tiny village of Masham, North Yorkshire.

.

It all began when Hayley of The Harrogate Wedding Lounge and I were standing around chatting and admiring the dresses in her gorgeous boutique (as you do!) and she commented that the fab Cat Hepple (of Cat Hepple Photography) and herself had floated the idea of a styled bridal shoot inspired by the concept “Electric Avenue” – no flowers, no fuss, just beautiful, beautiful gowns with colour pop glitter accessories and shoes a la Harriet Wilde thrown into the mix, all against a wholly contrasting backdrop.

.

Well she clearly didn’t need to ask me twice.  Right up my street!  Or should that be, my Electric Avenue!

So after much pinning of mood boards over at Pinterest, lunches at Rudding Park (entirely necessary), phone calls, emails and tweets, we gathered together a few more partners in crime – step forward Steven of Forever Film (more from him shortly!) and Victoria Farr Hair & Make Up Artist, and we were set.

.

Hayley came up with the brilliant idea of shooting in the market town of Masham – as far from neon as you can imagine – and got in touch with Bah Humbugs sweet shop, who were more than happy to be our hosts and line our stomachs with sugar!

What made the day even better for me was that our models for the day were two of my very closest friends, Kylie (a lawyer by day!) and Nicholas (my nearest thing to a little brother!).  Nick and Kylie were brilliant sports and had no trouble getting up close.  Well, girls… would you have trouble!?.

.

This is probably the last time that Mr NICHOLAS SHAW (remember the name, we discovered him!) will work without a whopping fee as he is currently a finalist in the TOP MODEL UK competition, being judged at the London Hilton on 17th March 2012 – with the editor of Vogue on the panel no less!  I die!  There is a judges’ prize and a public vote and whilst I reckon he’s a serious shoo in for both, it would be amazing if you could take a moment to vote for him by clicking here.  Go on!  He’ll love you forever!

Lucky For Some! A Real Wedding – Gillian & Dave

November 23rd, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog - Image Newcastle

.

.

Happy hump day everyone!  Today’s first dose of pretty on this wedding blog comes to you from Northumberland in the form of Gillian & Dave’s Real Wedding.  Their classically elegant day was caught on camera by Image Newcastle and made into a gorgeous movie by the ever talented Steven at Forever Film.

Gillian & Dave actually found Forever Film via Brides Up North so it is my pleasure to welcome them to these swirly silver pages today. If you do one thing this morning, watch this video – it really brings their day to life! Enjoy.

.

.

.

.

Let’s hear from Gillian:  Dave asked me to marry him on a stormy night in a private viewing room at the top of the Baltic Art Gallery on July 13th 2010.  We married on August 13th 2011 at Doxford Hall in Northumberland.  13 has become a lucky number for us!

We picked Doxford Hall because we needed somewhere that was geographically in the middle for both of our families as the majority of my family is in Scotland and the majority of Dave’s in Cheshire. This was perfect! I call Northumberland home and Dave has been based up here with his job in the Air Force for a few years so it was the natural place to be. We wanted a country house feel but modern at the same time and from the moment we visited Doxford we were blown away by the whole setting. The grounds were perfect and the hotel itself simply stunning!  Add to this the service by Leanne the wedding coordinator and we couldn’t have picked a better venue!  We went for a vintage country garden theme, with lots of sage green and pink.

I wore Geneva by Maggie Sottero which I finally found after many weeks of hunting for a dress! I loved it from the moment I saw it on another girl trying it on in the shop on the day I bought it.  I bought it at The White Tulip Wedding Company in Prudhoe who gave the most lost bride to be the biggest smile on her face!

.

My bridesmaids all wore different dresses but in the same colour of celadon green by Dessy and they were bought from Mia Sposa Bridal & Menswear in Newcastle.

.

I carried a bouquet of hydrangeas, David Austen roses and rosemary by The Flower Barn and my  bridesmaids each had a simple bouquet of cream roses.

To add personal touches to our day, I am Scottish and my mum had made a request for a bit of Scotland in our theme. Unfortunately the theme we had in mind didn’t really allow for this so we hired the wonderful North East Piper to pipe the cars up the driveway as a surprise. We also used homemade strawberry and champagne jam and brown ale chutney with fudge for our favours which were made by Dave with the assistance of the wonderful Sandy at Fourway Foods (My dad is the business development manager for local food producers) and Kenspeckle.

Lucy Bewley played on piano for our ceremony, I walked down the aisle to Florence and the Machine Cosmic Love which Lucy played beautifully.

.

Dine Services at The Mansion (stunning venue with attentive, slick and professional service); the beautiful, organised, calming and outright fab Katie from Perfect Days Vintage; the gorgeous and very very cool Jo from Vintage Twee; lovely lovely Lynne from Stems Design – an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic florist who decided that an orchid centrepiece just wasn’t good enough – we needed a tree (!); creative cake lady Skye from The Whimsical Cake Company (who made some teeny tiny white rose cupcakes and some very moreish pink cake pops); the fabulous girls at Fancie who branded my scrumptious Brides Up North cakes to the max; the amazing Andy Garfitt and Matt Tordoff of Greyeye Photography who constantly have me in stitches (book them now!); the super cool dreambooth – have a go, you’ll love it!; an amazing string quartet The Dotted Crotchets who rock pop songs better than Katy Perry herself; the super fun Sean Elliott Photography with his chalk board of one liners; Andrea from the online treasure trove And All Things Nice; Sheree at Cute Maps for, well, making the maps cute; fantastic sport Forever Film on cameras (Spielberg better watch out for this Steven) and the super talented Helen at What A Do Weddings who designed my kick ass goody bags.
