all that sparkles. caroline castigliano a winter wedding at rudding park, harrogate – jessica & andrew

February 14th, 2017 | Alexis Forsyth

Today on the blog, Jessica and Andrew share with us their quintessentially classic wedding at the captivating Rudding Park.

We adore the couple’s minimalist palette of rose gold, white and blush pink combined with an understated glamorous vibe, and as for Jessica’s  Caroline Castigliano dress – you would never guess that she had such an arduous task in finding ‘the one’ as it is simply stunning.

Throw in some sparklers, fireworks, a seven-piece live band, plus face painting and soft play for he kids – and you have the most perfect wedding day for guests of all ages. Jessica tells us more…

jessica says: We got engaged on the 1st March 2015, at Center Parcs in the Lake District. We took a family holiday to get over the winter blues and Andrew surprised me by proposing in the cabin. As he got down on one knee, it began to snow. The day after, we announced our engagement by writing it in the freshly fallen snow. For someone who likes to plan every tiny detail, I was amazed at how Andrew managed to keep the engagement a surprise from me; only my parents knew. Andrew had asked for my hand in marriage a few days prior to our trip.

We got married on 11th December 2016. From the offset we set our hearts on a winter wedding in England and knew we couldn’t guarantee the weather, even in the peak of summer. So we went for a day where the sun set at 3.30 pm and we could have pretty much the whole celebration with beautiful low lighting, creating a very intimate feel.

A Winter Wedding at Rudding Park (c) York Place Studios (10)

We chose Rudding Park in Harrogate as our venue. We wanted a location half way between East Yorkshire and Manchester, so started looking at the Leeds area. Nothing we came across had that “feeling” until we walked into Rudding Park. Not only did they make us feel like VIPs from the moment we stepped through the door, they treated Millie, my little girl, like a celebrity too and she loved it there. Millie is three, and not a lot of hotels with Rudding Park status accept children – not only did they accept her, they encouraged her play, her mischievousness and made her laugh every time we went across. Family to us in key and Rudding Park definitely has that family relaxed feel, in a 5 star luxurious environment.

We selected a colour scheme of gold, blush pink, white, rose gold, complimented by a glamorous feel with chandeliers and fairy lights. We wanted a theme that would bring the sparkle, to celebrate the time of year, but not make the wedding about Christmas. We also wanted the colours to look beautiful in the dim lights, so opted for soft pure colours mixed with sparkle and metallic.

A Winter Wedding at Rudding Park (c) York Place Studios (13)

My dream dress was a fitted, fishtail, lace gown with sleeves. When I tried on this gown I couldn’t believe how much I didn’t love it. I was really upset. I had to go back to basics and try on a lot of different shapes and then fell in love with a high waist, A-line gown.

I tried on many, but nothing felt like “the one”. As soon as we walked through the doors of The Bridal Collection in Harrogate, we fell in love. The shop itself is magical; I will remember the smell of the Jo Malone candles forever.

I tried on a range of Jenny Packham gowns, again I was disappointed that they didn’t suit my style. I decided to have a look at some of the other designers on the rack, and I noticed a dress hung up that was nothing like I had tried on before. My stomach literally got butterflies when I saw it! Boat neckline, dipped back (not too low), button fastening, high waistline, pencil pleats, cathedral train, A-line, plain, white beautiful gown… the Caroline Castigliano, Hepburn gown! As soon as I stepped into it, I cried. I felt like a bride and this was the gown I was going to marry my best friend in.

Andrew wore a classic slim fit, black tuxedo from Creation Suit Hire, in Goole. He teamed his suit with braces and a self-tie bow tie from Moss Bros.

My bridesmaids wore a chiffon blush pink gown from ASOS. Meanwhile, the ushers, father of the bride, and father of the groom wore the same as Andrew.

Fantastical Fancy. Bold Colours & Big Skirts For A Real Wedding At Newton Hall, Northumberland – Gemma & Ivan

May 29th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Phil Nunez Photography

Gemma and Ivan started out with an all white theme.  That didn’t last long.

Instead, this fun couple opted for bold brights, glam detail, fabulous florals and lots of entertaining extras.

Good choice.

Gemma says: Ivan asked me to marry him at T3, London Heathrow just prior to boarding on holiday to Mauritius! We actually met at T2 four years earlier after meeting on the internet. I was refusing to meet him and he knew I was flying out on business so just turned up, really glad he did now!

Phil Nunez Photography

We said I do at Newton Hall, Newton-by-the-Sea on 15th March 2014.

Northumberland has been a second home to me since a child as we have a family holiday home in Alnwick, so when we stumbled across Newton Hall whilst supping cocktails in Mauritius shortly after getting engaged it seemed fate.

We had to wait a few months before we could make the 300 mile journey up north to see the real thing so anticipation was high on the day.

We looked at other venues but for us nothing else came close to ticking the boxes – the location, the quirky style, the superior service & attention to detail, it felt completely right.

Phil Nunez Photography

Phil Nunez Photography

Our theme developed over the months, but from the offset we wanted something a bit different. We didn’t want pretty: we wanted full on, bold, fun, glam, quirky & wow. We wanted a wedding that reflected our taste and likes.

We found a Liberty print fabric that we fell in love with – we used this as basis for our colours scheme and the fabric itself for custom made ties & handkerchiefs. We also used the stag silhouette from Newton Hall as the stationery theme.

Phil Nunez Photography

We started out with an all white colour palette and decided to turn it all on its head as the theme developed using bold colours: pinks, blues, purples mixed with neutral colours and textures.

We really loved the idea of having a fun & colourful glam theme, especially at the weather in March was likely to be dull.

I chose a BIG dress – which was a complete shock. I set out thinking slinky & plain and landed up very fitted with a massive flamenco like bottom with a huge train.

I used Mariposa, a small bridal boutique close to home. They encouraged me to try different styles which was really helpful. Being a size 14 I felt nervous that everything would look awful but they were really good at choosing flattering styles.

In the end I wanted to wear something I would never had dreamt of, or have occasion to wear again.

Phil Nunez Photography

My bridesmaid wore an aubergine dress from House of Fraser’s own collection. Again we didn’t want a traditional dress, we wanted glam: it had a beautiful metal collar and a thigh high split with towering LK Bennett heels. Having just a single bridesmaid made the choices super easy.

We hired navy tails for the groom’s party and teamed them with duck egg linen waistcoats. Ivan wore the Liberty print tie, and the rest of the party ruches with Liberty print handkerchiefs. They looked super smart but edgy.

Phil Nunez Photography

Amy from Rose & Bird did our make-up and totally nailed what I wanted from the start. Kara from Kara Scott Hair catered for our hair needs. I didn’t have any specific ideas on hair so she worked through lots of ideas with me which was great. Both Amy & Kara we brilliant company on the day putting everyone at ease…and the make-up & hair lasted all day despite the crazy winds on the beach!

Phil Nunez Photography

Phil Nunez was our photographer and such an important part of the day. We wanted natural pictures, no posed formal shots – this was really important for us. Phil’s work is incredible, he gets the most beautiful of shots in the most simple of surroundings, such a talent. When we saw the results of the pre-wedding shoot we knew we’d hit gold.

Phil Nunez Photography

Phil Nunez Photography

I carried a hand tied bouquet of mainly deep and hot pink David Austin roses with elements of flowers being used in the table centres such as a splash sensation, lisisanthus, freesia & thistles to link to the buttonholes.

Phil Nunez Photography

Phil Nunez Photography

My favourite part of the day has to be walking back down the aisle as Mrs Scott under the raining confetti, to the whooping & cheering of friends & family – unforgettable.

Phil Nunez Photography

I had requested that the ladies go for fantastical headwear, keeping in line with the bold & glam theme. Newton Hall installed a hat line which we hung messages from – I loved this idea.

The Finishing Touch Company catered for all our flower and decorative needs. From the start Charlotte was great – lots of ideas and patience! Her work really did make our day. I actually cried when I saw our wedding I saw the rooms. I’m so glad we went for it with the flowers.

Phil Nunez Photography

We gave our guests a tea towel as a favour. A designer friend helped us create the design and then we had them printed on natural calico

Phil Nunez Photography

Phil Nunez Photography

Our table flowers were huge displays of roses in pinks of different shades, thistles, pink lisianthus, pink freesia, splash sensation, muscari, veronica, ranunculus, pink anemone and bouvardia – they looked spectacular!

Phil Nunez Photography

We hired in a photo booth from Snaparazzi and this really made the evening. The guests loved it and the pictures are a fantastic memory.

We also hired in big illuminated letters from Coco Luminaire which we used around the venue – such a cool backdrop.

For our evening entertainment wee hired in Func on the Rocks – we chose them by blind listening and they stood out a mile. They were fabulous on the night and totally played to the audience. We had so many compliments on the band.

One of my closest friends Jojo made our wedding cake – inspiration came from a wedding show we visited. She decided to create the wedding cake as our wedding gift and she certainly delivered. Jojo can barely cook an evening meal so this was a massive challenge and she delivered 1000%… even if she did leave half of it accidentally on the train to Edinburgh, only just getting it back in the nick of time!

Phil Nunez Photography

After the wedding we headed out to Marrakech for a mini-moon and are booked for two weeks in Bangkok & Phuket in the Autumn.

Phil Nunez Photography

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to have the day you want, don’t worry about what you think your guests expect. It’s such a monumental occasion, so make sure you research your photographer – their work will be your lasting physical memory for decades to come.

Phil Nunez Photography

Congratulations Gemma & Ivan!

Prima Ballerinas. Jenny Packham (Her) & Vivienne Westwood (Him) For A Real Wedding At Allerton Castle – Hannah & Kenny

February 26th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Joe Dodsworth Photography

I’ve been shouting loudly on these pretty pages about our fabulous Luxury Wedding Exhibition coming up at Allerton Castle this weekend (you ARE coming, aren’t you?), and this morning’s Real Wedding is just a little reminder of why I am so passionate about this beautiful venue.

Stylish ballerinas (how cool is that – dream job alert!) Hannah & Kenny chose this elegant setting for their beautiful, fun and touching big day.  With lots of luxury additions and a good dose of craft, this stunning couple’s celebration was both grand and personal.  Just lovely and – as Hannah is a dedicated Brides Up North reader – watch out for lots of our Featured Suppliers popping up too!

With images by Joe Dodsworth Photography.

Joe Dodsworth Photography

Hannah says:  We got engaged in July 2011 in Sri Lanka whilst on holiday, Kenny organised a private dinner on the beach. It was really one of the best moments of my life!  I am a huge fan of Brides Up North and just lived on it in the prep for our wedding!

Joe Dodsworth Photography

Joe Dodsworth Photography

We were married on 28th June 2013 at Allerton Castle, Knaresborough.  We chose the venue because it has such a sense of occasion and it’s all exclusive to you and your wedding party for the day.

We just wanted to have a fantastic day and an awesome party!   We didn’t set on any one colour or theme. We just chose items and colours that we liked and we felt went with the surroundings.

Joe Dodsworth Photography

Make Up by Jo and Hair By Dianne Minnes were my beauty team, these ladies made us so relaxed and my bridesmaids, bridesman and Mums had such a great morning getting ready.

Joe Dodsworth Photography

I wanted a dress I felt comfortable in and could move in but I still wanted it to be a wedding gown, something that you would only wear on your wedding day. I also really wanted Kenny to love it, and he has great taste so I did find the whole shopping for the dress surprisingly stressful. I went for a Jenny Packham ‘Lady Astor’ from The White Room in Sheffield. Chloe at The White Room is excellent and made the whole experience simple and yet still special. I treated myself to a pair of Christian Louboutin heels (I saved £1 a day for a year and a bit) and then I had a simple pair of earrings from Carat, a hair band from Jenny Packham (which I got on ebay) and a silver bracelet that Kenny had given  me for my 21st birthday.

Kenny found a great outfit from Vivienne Westwood that was just right for him, individual and a nod to his Scottish heritage.

Joe Dodsworth Photography

Joe Dodsworth Photography

The bridesmaids wore Sapphire blue dresses from Dessy and they each had a pair of silver shoes from various places, wherever we found ones they liked! The best men had suits from Zara and our dad’s had suits from M&S, all the men had waistcoats that my Dad helped us organise from a tailor in Somerset.

I carried a bouquet of roses, lisianthu and gypsophila. My bridesmaids had very similar ones and the men all had roses or acanthium for button holes.  My mum did all the flowers herself!

I really enjoy a bit of crafting when I get time, so I had a go at adding lots of bits and bobs. I collected items from the time we got engaged, some things made the cut, other items are still in my loft. I made the table plan, place names with mini sweet jars, a letter box for cards and notelets that guest filled in instead of a guest book and the sweet buffet all the decorations for the staircase and the tables. It all took a long time but I enjoyed it and when I looked around on the day and saw all the bits and bobs that we had put all that effort into it felt like our day.

The ceremony itself was very special and like nothing we have experienced before, but every stage of the wedding was just wonderful. Getting ready with my bridesmaids, mum and mother in law in the morning, seeing each other at the altar, chatting with my dear friends after the ceremony, wondering around the grounds having our photos taken when the sun decided to show up (!) and the party and fireworks and the great food.

Joe Dodsworth Photography

Joe Dodsworth Photography

We are both professional ballet dancers so live music is a huge part of our lives and we really wanted to include that in our day. We were really lucky and had a singer for our ceremony and a band called Func On The Rocks for the evening. Other than that we had a huge box of garden games that went down a treat! Kenny’s parents treated us to a firework display which was so cool, by Ferrensby Fireworks.

Joe Dodsworth Photography

After the wedding we honeymooned in Singapore and Koh Samui in Thailand.

Joe Dodsworth Photography

Joe Dodsworth Photography

I got really lucky and won the money to pay for our wedding, so we didn’t have that worry but before I did that we had financial concerns. Please believe me when I say you really don’t need to spend a lot to have the time of your life. You are so lucky to have met that person you are ready to live your life with and those feelings will be felt 100 times over on the day and that is what is so remarkable about your wedding day.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to take a few moments to step back and view what is your day, and don’t rush, relax and be in the moment. Our families really enjoyed being involved and so hand out jobs big or small and give your people little bits of the day that they had a hand in. I dried my bouquet and have it in a vase and think of my mum when ever I see it. Just think about what is important to you as a couple and what you would like to have as your memories after the big day and go from there.

Joe Dodsworth Photography

Congratulations Hannah & Kenny!

Red Hot. Benjamin Roberts & Roses For A Destination Wedding In Cyprus – Annie & Lee

January 15th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Mandy and Louis Christodoulou

Brides Up North might know them better as members of the fantastic party band Func On The Rocks (trust me, I’ve partied with them – these guys really do rock, if you are looking for a band, check them out!) but today Annie and Lee are here to share their own wedding celebration on these pages, choosing a romantic red theme for their sunny big day in Cyprus.  Just what the doctor ordered on a cold Wednesday morning!

With images by Mandy and Louis Christodoulou

 Mandy and Louis Christodoulou

Annie says: Our’s is a real life ‘girl next door’ story. Lee was in a band with my housemate at the time and he moved in next door with another fellow band member. I used to go to a lot of their gigs and for a long time I was so shy around him that I couldn’t even make eye contact because I thought he was so hot! Eventually our eyes met after many fun nights out and the rest is history. Six years on, the bass player and lead singer were actually best man and maid of honour at our wedding.

Mandy and Louis Christodoulou

Mandy and Louis Christodoulou

After much pondering we decided to get married in Cyprus as we’ve had many memorable holidays there and have always had a soft spot for it.

Mandy and Louis Christodoulou

Mandy and Louis Christodoulou

We wanted somewhere private and intimate, for just us and our nearest and dearest. We fell in love with Vasilias Nikoklis Inn, near Paphos as soon as we saw it and knew it was perfect. It had everything we wanted, true authentic Greek family run business with delicious home cooked food and beautiful surroundings. It’s tucked away from all of the touristy hustle and bustle, at the foot of the Troodos mountains. You can’t beat waking up the morning after your wedding to a view like that.

Mandy and Louis Christodoulou

My dress was a Benjamin Roberts design, bought from the lovely ladies at Confetti and Lace in Stanningley, Leeds.

Meanwhile, I am thrilled to introduce you to some of my Brides Up North Featured Suppliers who certainly know how to get a party kicking – the awesome Func On The Rocks.  If you are looking for your wedding band, check these guys out.  Now:  Hit it!

.

.

How did Func On The Rocks begin?

.

We all met at Music College in 2004 whilst completing our Jazz Degree and began gigging together professionally soon after. We have worked together on various original projects over the years and have grown into a very close group of friends.

.

.

Who makes up your band? Tell us about yourselves?

.

Cherie Gears, Singer/Songwriter – The boys in the band are like my big brothers! We have so much fun working, rehearsing and performing together. I have been singing for as long as I can remember and had the privilege of performing at Rowan Atkinson’s 50th Birthday Party along with a star studded audience. I was featured, performing solo on BBC’s Songs of Praise in 2005 and 2011, The South Bank Show and Sky 1 Don’t Stop Me Now. My biggest loves are writing songs and performing to a live audience!

.

Lee Walker, Pianist/ Backing Vocalist – Although the band are based in Leeds, I’m the only member who is actually born and bred in Yorkshire. I come from a very musical family and have been playing piano since my dad took me to my first piano lesson at the age of 8. Before Func On The Rocks I’ve worked in a number of different bands, including Queen and Amy Winehouse tribute shows. However, the last few years working with the guys from Func On The Rocks have definitely been the most rewarding and enjoyable as I love the music we play and we’re the best of friends on and off stage.
.
Steve Drinkwater, Drummer –
Baby of the bunch and proud brummy. You’ll always find me subconsciously tapping away on the nearest surface. When I’m not gigging, I’m teaching drums to the next Keith Moon.
Chris Glanville, Bass Guitarist – I’ve been playing Bass since I was 14yrs old and also come from a very musical family. I’ve performed at many events throughout the country since doing my degree at Leeds College of Music. The guys in Func On The Rocks have been a major part of my adult life, musically and personally, they’re all incredible people and musicians. It is well known that we love to "build the audience up into a frenzy!!!"

.
Eirik Svela, Lead Guitarist/ Backing Vocalist – Originally from Norway, I came to Leeds to study and now I never want to leave. After graduating from Leeds College of Music I have been working as a guitarist in a variety projects including the stage production of "9 to 5 – The Musical" and "Kathy Kirby: Icon". I always look forward to the gigs with Func On The Rocks because we have such a great time playing and the guys are so much fun to be around..

.

.

Func On The Rocks Wedding & Party Band

.

.

What sort of tracks/ music do you sing/ play?

.

Lee – Each member of the band enjoys playing and listening to different styles of music so we understand that our audiences will also have diverse taste. It’s important for us to play songs which will appeal to a variety of different people and bring them together on the dance floor.

.

Chris – We have a wide range of songs in our repertoire from Stevie Wonder to The Killers, Beyonce to Queen and are constantly adding to it so we stay fresh and modern. We will always put a set list together to suit a client’s taste, whether they’d prefer an evening of Motown, modern chart hits or old school rock classics.

.

Cherie – I love singing in all styles so a diverse repertoire is perfect for me, plus it keeps our audience up on the dance floor all night long.

.

.

What can a bride and groom who book Func On The Rocks expect?

.

Chris – A day of live entertainment they will never forget. We offer everything you could need to make your day as special, memorable and unique as possible. We tailor the entertainment around your wedding requirements to suit your musical tastes and personalities. With our lighting for the stage and dance floor, complimentary DJ station, plus the band performing your first dance (a song of your choice) as part of all our packages, we are the solution to your entertainment needs.

.

All you then need to consider are any optional extras. For example, an instrumental jazz trio playing during your wedding breakfast, vocal duet during the drinks reception, or perhaps to walk you down the aisle. You can even choose to add a brass section to the 5 piece band to really give the evening some extra func!

.

Cherie – Through our many years of professional experience we’ve gained the confidence to create a day as extravagant, or as intimate as a Bride and Groom wish. Playing together for so many years creates a natural rhythm within a band and we pride ourselves on the ability to turn our hand to any music style request thrown at us.

.

.

Func On The Rocks Wedding & Party Band

.

.

What sets you apart from your competition?

.

Cherie – We work and socialise together every week, rehearsing, writing, arranging and this really shows through our performances which are always tight, fresh and fun! We’ve invested in a fantastic PA which ensures great sound quality no matter how big or small your venue. We understand our responsibilities are not just to provide a fantastic performance, but also take pride in our ability to set up quickly and efficiently, arriving smartly dressed. Manning the DJ station all night to take requests from guests and packing down safely are all part of our service with a smile!

.
Steve – It’s a real team effort, no-one tries to steal the show and we all enjoy putting our own individual mark on the set list. We’re a solid band where unlike a lot of other function bands, we are exactly the same group of people on every gig, not just session musicians. We know each others strengths and personalities inside out which really shows on stage.

.
Lee – It’s important for a Bride and Groom to feel confident in a band that have the experience and professionalism to provide a day that they and their guests will always remember. You can count on us not to let you down.

.

.

What is included in the service?

.

Our standard evening package consists of:

.

.

Func On The Rocks Wedding & Party Band

.

.

What if a Bride & Groom ask you to learn a song? Can you do that?

.

Eirik – Absolutely. We love learning a song for our brides, it makes the night really special!
.

Cherie – I feel so lucky to perform for Brides as they walk up the aisle to be wed or sing their first dance, it’s such a special feeling.  Live music has such a magical effect on people. Songs can hold so many beautiful memories and create new ones.

.
Lee – The first dance together at a wedding is one of the most important moments to any Bride and Groom. With us taking the lead, the couple can relax in the knowledge that their special song will be performed professionally and with the care and attention to detail it deserves.

.

.

What are your personal favourite pieces to perform at a wedding/ what really gets a party started?

.

Cherie – I love Stevie Wonder and anything with a funky groove, watching the audience get into a circle and take turns to free style is so much fun! Bringing everyone together. I also love singing Beyonce and Chaka Khan too.

.
Chris – Personally as a bass player, I like to play anything with an underlying groove. So anything Motown, James Brown or Michael Jackson, suits me down to the ground.

.

Eirik – We find alot of the Kings of Leon numbers always go down really well.

.

.

Func On The Rocks Wedding & Party Band

.

.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

.

Steve – We understand how expensive planning a wedding can be, and try to provide a competitively priced service. Our complimentary DJ station is an excellent way to save hundreds of pounds immediately, whilst still guaranteeing great quality live music for the rest of the night.  Our packages start from around £995, and vary slightly depending on the time of year and day of the week.

.

.

Where are you located and will you travel?

.

We are based in Leeds but will travel anywhere.

.

.

Func On The Rocks Wedding & Party Band

.

.

Are there any really memorable weddings that you have performed at? Any good stories?

.

Cherie – I love to see a couple learn a dance routine or pick a funny first dance that is really special to them. We once performed ‘Never Can Tell’ from Pulp Fiction and the bride and groom did the real dance which went down really well. It’s so nice to see everyone in a big circle around the Bride and Groom at the end of the night singing along with us! Finishing the evening with a bang.

.

Steve – We recently had the opportunity to perform with Narina Pallot. By coincidence, she was a friend of the Bride and we were able to perform the first dance and a couple of other songs with her, which was great.

.
