Nostell Priory Luxury Wedding Exhibition Autumn 2013

Well, well, well  it’s been one exciting week so far – a fantastic show last weekend at the gorgeous The Mansion in Roundhay Park where over 160 brides and their families turned out to meet our fabulous exhibitors, then a blink and you’ll miss it trip to London to pick up our first ever Wedding Blog Award for “Best Big Day Inspiration” from National glossy Wedding Magazine. It’s all a bit of a blur, really.  Is it really only Wednesday?!

Lucky for us, the weekend isn’t going to end on an anti-climax, as we’ve got our really rather lovely luxury wedding exhibition at the beautiful, exclusive use venue that is Nostell Priory this Sunday.  Hurrah!

.

This afternoon it’s the turn of Brides Up North’s newest Featured Supplier, Aaron of Gilpin Photography, to take to these swirly silver pages, tell us what makes him tick (and click!) and show us a little of what he can do.  He’s offering quite a hefty discount for Brides Up North readers too, so let’s give him a warm welcome…

How  did  you  get  into  wedding  photography?

.

About  6  years  ago,  I  found  myself  stuck  in  a  rut  in  a  job  I  didn’t  enjoy  and  I  needed  a  change.  My  wife  Debbie,  asked   me  if  I  could  do  any  job  what  would  it  be?  It  didn’t  take  long  for  me  to  reply,  a photographer!  I  have  always  been  the   creative  type  and  enjoyed  art,  graphic  design  and  photography,  but  I  never  really  thought  I  could  make  a  career  out  of   it.  We  decided  that  I  should  go  do  a  photography  course  at  my  local  college.  That  led  to  another  then  another  and  two  years  later  I  had  well  and  truly  fallen  for  photography.  For  the  next  few  years  I  became  a  family  portrait  photographer,   until  I  was  offered  that  chance  to  photograph  a  relative’s  wedding.

What  is  your  favourite  thing  about  being  a  wedding  photographer?

.

To  photograph  a  couple’s  wedding,  is  truly  amazing.  To  be  invited  into  the  biggest  day  of  their  lives  to  capture  those   special  moments  as  they  unfold,  knowing  that  the  pictures  I  create  will  be  treasured  forever,  I  don’t  think  there  is  a   bigger  honour  than  that.

.

.

How  do  you  get  couples  to  relax  on  the  day?

.

I  know  how  stressful  a  wedding  can  be  so  I  like  to  offer  my  clients  an  engagement  shoot.  This  helps  us  all  get  to  know   each  other  a  little  better,  and  they  get  to  see  how  I  work.  By  the  time  the  big  day  comes  we  will  have  had  2‐3  meetings   so  there  shouldn’t  be  any  awkwardness.    A  couple  of  glasses  of  bubbly  on  the  day  normally  helps  too (just  kidding)!

Any  advice  to  any  brides  who  don’t  like  to  have  their  picture  taken?

.

I  totally  understand  that  some  people  don’t  like  having  their  picture  taken,  I  know  I  don’t.  My  style  of  photography  is   more  documentary,  I  capture  the  moments  as  they  happen,  unnoticed.  However  I  do  normally  take  an  hour  during  the  day  to  get  the  bride  and  groom  portraits,  but  that  is  totally  optional.

.

.

Which  celebrity  wedding  would  you  most  like  to  photograph  and  why?

.

I would  have  loved  to  have  been  one  of  the  photographers  at  Prince  William  and  Kate’s  wedding, but  unfortunately  I   was  overlooked!  Maybe  next  time…

Are  you  married?  Tell  us  about  your  day.

.

Yes!  We’ve  just  had  our  three  year  anniversary  this  month.  I  popped  the  question  on  Christmas  day  2007.  I  hid  the  ring   under  a  cushion  on  a  chair  she  never  normally  sits  on.  The  plan  was  to  pull  it  out  after  she  had  opened  all  her   Christmas  pressies,  as  a  final  surprise.  Well  that  WAS  the  plan  until  Debbie  sat  on  it.  Anyway,  she  said  yes  and  2  years   later  we  had  our  ceremony  at  the  Guildhall  in  Hull.  We  then  bussed  all  of  our  guests  to  the  other  side  of  the  city  where   we  had  an  amazing  meal  and  party.  We  flew  out  to  the  Maldives  the  next  day  for  a  whole  week  of  no  shoes,  no  news.   Perfect.  We  also  had  a  trip  to  Las  Vegas  booked  as  a  wedding  gift  but  that  had  to  be  cancelled  when  we  found  out  we   were  getting  a  baby  boy  instead!

What  sets  you  apart  from  other  wedding  photographers?

.

I  think  photography  is  like  ice  cream…  (I  know,  stay  with  me).  There  are  many  different  flavours,  and  not  everyone  will   like  everything.  My  “flavour”  of  documentary,  mixed  with  a  little  contemporary  portraiture,  suits  most  brides.  Taking   photography  away  for  a  second,  I  think  the  most  important  thing  I  can  offer  is  great  customer  service.  I  will  do  my  best   to  look  after  the  couple  and  not  just  on  the  day.  From  the  moment  they  contact  me,  I  am  only  a  phone  call  away,  even   if  they  have  a  question  or  need  advice  that’s  not  photography  related.

.

.

What  can  a  couple  who  book  you  expect  on  the  day?

.

A  couple  who  book  me  can  expect  to  just  enjoy  their  day.  I  will  never  get  in  the  way  or  ask  them  to  change  things  to   make  it  easier  for  me.  It’s  their  day  and  I  will  be  there  to  document  it,  how  ever  and  where  ever  they  decide.  I’ll  be   relaxed  but  focused  and  always  professional.

What  is  included  in  your  "package"?

.

I  have  3  collections.  The  10”  Collection,  The  12”  Collection  and  The  14”  Collection.  They  all  include  an  album  and   digital  negatives.  All  the  details  of  what  is  included  can  be  found  on  my  website.  I  can  also  create  a  bespoke  collection for  brides  that  require  something  different.  I  often  get  asked  why  all  of  my  wedding  collections  include  an  album.    I   understand  that  almost  everything  is  digital  these  days  but  I  believe  photographs  look  best    printed  (and  that’s  coming   from  a  complete  tech  geek).  We  all  love  looking  back  at  our  favourite  childhood  photo  albums,  of  us  blowing  out   candles  on  birthday  cakes,  tearing  up  wrapping  paper  on  Christmas  day,  that  holiday  at  the  seaside.  These  days  we   take  more  photos  than  ever,  especially  of  our  kids,  trying  to  capture  them  at  their  most  expressive.  It’s  sad  to  say  most   of  them  never  leave  the  screen  of  our  phones,  computers  or  Facebook  profiles  and  this  is  true  of  digital  only   wedding  packages  that  seem  to  be  popular  these  days.  My  aim  as  a  wedding  photographer  is  not  just  to  create  a  set   of  images  to  sit  on  a  couple’s  hard  drive,  but  to  create  stunning  bespoke  hand  crafted  albums  that  will  last  a  lifetime,   and  can  be  enjoyed  by  the  whole  family.

.

.

Can  you  give us an idea on  price?

.

My  collections  range  from  £1,200 ‐ £2,500.  Bespoke  collections  can  be  created  for  smaller  budgets.  I would like to offer Brides Up North readers £100 off  the  10”  Collection,  £150  off  the  12”  Collection  and  £250  off  the  14”  Collection  – please mention Brides Up North when booking.
