Real Wedding Recap 2012: A Proper Winter Wonderland! A Real Wedding In The North East – Rachel & Ryan

December 24th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Over the festive period I’ll be recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy…

.

Rachel and Ryan's Wedding at Rockcliffe Hall, County Durham by Katy Melling Photography

.

.

Starting off our seasonal recap in style, today I am honoured to share the Real Wedding of one of my best girlfriends in the whole wide World, Rachel. I was lucky enough to be a bridesmaid for Rachel and Ryan, and was more than a little nervous that one of my favourite photographers and Brides Up North Featured Supplier Katy Melling Photography would be there to see me descend into drunken Christmas wedding merriment at what has to be one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever attended (you’ll see!*).

After all, elegance aside, this was also the wedding where I could be found singing shouting Christmas carols at 4am, where my husband set fire to himself on an aisle candle (yes really!) and where a faux snow fight left everyone twinkling!  Proper Geordie fun! I did catch Katy snapping a shot of me taking a big slug of white wine, but it hasn’t made it into the final edit.  Thanks Katy!

.

Without further ado, over to my best friend Rachel: We got engaged on 10th December 2010 in Central Park in New York and were married at home in County Durham on Sunday 18th December 2011, at Rockliffe Hall.  We said our vows in the Rockliffe Suite and then had a drinks reception in the Old Hall while the Rockliffe Suite was done up for the wedding breakfast.

As soon as we visited Rockliffe we loved it. On the practical side we had a large guest list and it was able to cater for 180. It also had 60 bedrooms so all of the guests who wanted to stay were able to be accommodated.

.

It seemed a bit more luxurious than some of the other venues we visited and was decorated to our taste. It is about 45 minutes away from Newcastle so was fairly easy for our guests to get to. It is just a lovely hotel and felt cosy and we thought it would suit the wintery/ Christmassy feel we were after. It has a lovely area called the Old Hall which we used for the drinks reception and also has a fabulous spa which our guests got good use of the day before and the day after the wedding.

Obviously the wedding was very near Christmas so overall we had a bit of a Winter Wonderland theme.

We also had some Christmas touches like snow on the tables and bauble name holders (by Cox & Cox) and candy canes as favours for people to hang on their Christmas trees after the wedding.

.

Overall, I wanted the wedding to be very white. We had no colour in our flowers and I wanted the room to look white, snowy, twinkly and pretty.  The bridesmaids wore an aubergine colour which was reflected in the ushers’ ties but other than that the rest of the wedding was all white.

My dress was Jenny Packham. It was very detailed and glitzy around the neckline which went down my back and then it had a tulle skirt. I also had a Jenny Packham headdress. I tried on a Jenny Packham dress in a shop in Newcastle but then went to her shop in London as it was a good excuse for a weekend away with my Mum. There were a few that I liked but the one I chose was most appropriate for a Christmas wedding.

My bridesmaids wore aubergine one shoulder dresses.  The designer was Alvina Valenta and I got them from Lily White Bridal in Jesmond.

We had a lot of music and entertainment during our reception: my good friend Emma Kendall sang during the service, and then we enjoyed the Opus 4 String Quartet, carol singers and some singing waiters, before hitting the dance floor to Jeff Dingle and the Moonswing Trio.

.

Thinking about favourite moments, my mum and dad had organised the singing waiters as a surprise for Ryan and me. I loved this and we were all up dancing on our chairs for an hour so that was really fun. In general I just loved it all as I wanted it to be a massive party and that’s what it was. I also loved the girly time on the morning of the wedding with the bridesmaids and all my family.

We had a simple cake made by Gemma at Love Lily Cakes. It was all white and had a flower appliqué on it. We had 3 tiers which consisted of Victoria sponge cake, chocolate cake and lemon cake.

After the excitement of the wedding we had a mini moon for a few days to the Feversham Arms in Helmsley and we are hoping to go to New York at the end of the year. We live in Dubai so we wanted to stay in the North East to enjoy the rest of the festive season with our friends and families.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be just to enjoy it and try and take it in. It is such a fun day but it goes so quickly. We got married 6 weeks ago and it already feels like it was so long ago.

Grace says:  We got engaged in January 2011 at the Crab and Lobster, Asenby just before I went to Spain to ride in the Spanish Sunshine Tour for eight weeks.

.

We were married on 12th May 2012 at St Marys Church at Myton on Swale, the first wedding at the church for nine years, with our reception at Allerton Castle near Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.  Allerton Castle was the first venue we looked at and no where else compared, it was just amazing, a fairytale castle.

We didn’t have a particular theme and just wanted something simple but traditional.  The colours that we chose were ivory with touches of red.

I chose an ivory tulle dress from Andrea Bambridge of York with a long train of tulle, and flowers scattered across the bodice and skirt. I wore a veil and tiara previously worn by my sister Charlotte who was married six years ago and gorgeous Swarovski shoes by Gina.

.

My four adult bridesmaids wore red Anoushka G dresses from House of Frazer, and our four flowergirls wore ivory dresses with a red bow on the back.  Our pageboy who was two wore an ivory suit with a waistcoat but he decided he wanted to be like the girls so he wore one of the flowergirls’ cardigans during the ceremony!

The other guys wore traditional outfits by York Suit Hire

The church service was the most emotional and nervous part of the day and meant the most because our marriage is really what the day was about.

.

Vocalis Choir of Harrogate sang in the church.  Amongst other songs they performed ‘I Will Follow Him’ originally sung by the choir and Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act.

.

.

I carried a traditional shower bouquet of David Austin Patience Roses and Calla Lilies, and Dendrobium OrchidS.  My adult bridesmaids’ carried natural hand-tied bouquets of red roses and the flowergirls carried hearts decorated with Dendrobium Orchids, all provided by Elise Flowers. Two of the hearts are now hanging at either side of the fireplace as a momentum of the day. There were arrangements of flowers inside the church and there was an arch of flowers over the church door. At Allerton Castle table decorations were also provided by Elise Flowers and the staircase was decorated with ivy, fairylights and storm lanterns, and a wishing tree was placed in the conservatory.  This has now been planted as a reminder of our day.

A chimney sweep – Pete the Sweep – attended to wish us luck!  This is a tradition derived 200 years ago when King George II was riding his horse in a royal procession when without warning a stray dog began nipping the legs of the King’s horse causing it to rear up and the King lost control. As the crowd looked on in horror, a chimney sweep came from the crowd, regained control of the horse and returned to the crowd. After the procession the King was unable to thank the sweep personally for his bravery so he decreed that from that day onwards all chimney sweeps should be considered lucky.

During the drinks reception Pure Silk Jazz played to entertain 90 guests followed by Sounds Familiar, a local band from Tollerton, who played during the meal and then Pure Silk Cutz played in the evening.

Our first dance was a waltz, with a few twists and turns, to Take That’s Rule the World.  We rehearsed our first dance with The Butterfly School of Dance in Thirsk.

A Scottish Wedding In The Smoke! A Real Wedding, Nicola & Ed

September 14th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Today I have a simple and stunning Scottish themed wedding, which took place down South in the ol’ smoke, courtesy of Didsbury based bridal accessories designer Nicola of Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe, a wedding blog Featured Supplier.

.

Before we get down to the bridal inspiration and loveliness, Nicola would like to remind you all about the Vintage Wedding Fair taking place this weekend at the St George Hotel in Harrogate from 12pm – 5pm.  Nicola will be offering a 15% discount on all her garters on the day.

.

It’s a busy weekend for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe, as Nicola’s work is also available to view at The White Room Bridal in Sheffield this weekend as part of their Jazz Era Themed Stephanie Allin weekend.

.

Now, let’s check out this lovely lady’s own Real Wedding

Over to Nicola: We got engaged on Waterloo bridge in London on Monday 10th Dec 2006 during the rush hour! Ed faked a breakdown while I was on the back of his Vespa to get me onto the bridge!  We actually married on October 17th 2009 -a long gap as we went travelling for a year and a half after getting engaged and before getting married.  We actually planned and did the wedding in 8 months when we got back from travelling!

We were married at Islington Town Hall in North London- we had the council chambers there. The reception was held at the Empress of India a bistro style pub in Victoria Park, East London (sadly since shut down).  It was a beautiful round room and felt intimate even though it could accommodate 100 people or so. The reception venue was chosen as it was literally perfect for the relaxed reception we wanted and was pretty much the only one we found that could accommodate our numbers.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Rebecca Prigmore

.

.

Our wedding had a city of London theme along with a touch of Scottish-ness! My family are all Scottish and so coming down en mass was a real trip for them. We had a piper play as they were arriving. The London theme was run through from the big red bus that transported the guests to the reception to the table names being famous London landmarks.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Rebecca Prigmore

.

.

My dress was not a wedding dress – it was a cream silk evening dress by Roberto Rodriguez and I got it in Harrods. It was a complete accident – my mum saw it when we were being touristy there one day just before we booked the wedding. I tried it on with no make up, awful hair and no shoes but I knew it was exactly what I wanted. I am not a traditional wedding dress sort of girl and would probably have bought a vintage dress otherwise. I hadn’t ever really thought about what I would wear to get married until it was upon me and knew more about what I didn’t want than what I did want.
