Wedding Blog Fashion Exclusive: Starlets! A Styled Bridal Shoot In Yorkshire By The Little Bridal Company

This afternoon I am proud to introduce lovely Brides Up North Featured Supplier Becky of Bradford based The Little Bridal Company as she debuts her first complete collection here on the blog.  Becky is fiercely proud to be a Northern bridal designer and draws heavily on design influences from bygone eras to create beautiful and distinctive designs.  And we are all for that around here!

.

Get ready to twirl, girls!

Becky says:  The photo shoot took place in the simply stunning The Midland Hotel in the centre of Bradford.  The idea behind the shoot was to bring together up and coming bright stars of the bridal business based in and around Bradford. Bradford has had a bad press over the last few years, resulting in a lack of jobs and opportunity. I wanted to show that there really is something good happening in our city so watch out!

My first complete off the peg collection is named ‘Starlets’  and my muse a young actress, especially one working her way up through the star system. This rings so true in so many ways. The Little Bridal Company with myself at the helm is at the beginning of its own journey through the star system. So too is a bride.

The inspiration behind The Little Bridal Company has many origins.

.

Thanks to my grandparents the love of musicals is deep-set: ‘Seven Brides For Seven Brothers’, ‘Wizard Of Oz’ and ‘Some Like It Hot’ (to name but a few). Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Sofia Lauren graced the screens with their true beauty – no air brushing needed – and they had womanly, hour glass figures. No wonder we are seeing a vintage revival with so many smoke screens in the world today! These films take you away to a fantasy world where the good prevail, the bad lose and everybody lives happily ever after.  Isn’t that what we need to pick us up in this time of austerity?

.

It isn’t reality but who wants reality 24/7 and what better time to embrace this feeling than on your wedding day were you do get your happily ever after and your knight in shining armour?! You are the star in your own show for that one day and just maybe if you work at it that feeling will stay with you for your entire marriage just like in the good old days.

The Little Bridal Company harps back to the days of elegance and sultriness of the 1940′s and 50′s glory days, with echoes of the war time ethos ‘make do and mend’ when dresses were made from old bed sheets and curtaining during the war and grow your own and self sustainability were encouraged.

.

In this current age we are encouraged to spend, spend, spend and told that new is best, but in the world of weddings this is not always the best way to go. Embracing the old and fashionably labelling it ‘vintage’ has helped the modern day bride personalise every element of her special day.  ‘Something old’ and ‘something borrowed’ has now taken on a whole new role and I applaud this.

‘Starlets’ is a soft, feminine collection created for my 2013 brides to be.  The collection is heavily influenced by ‘The New Look’ collection of 1947 by Dior:  this post war collection brought back the femininity, soft rounded shapes and full flowing shapes which had been lost during the war when women went to work to aid the war effort and fabric was in short supply.

.

The term fit or flounce was first penned around this time describing the quintessential silhouettes of the era. The dresses placed great emphasis on the narrowing of the waist, creating a feminine and curvaceous silhouette.

September Sunflowers! A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Liz & Andrew

August 10th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

A Yorkshire Wedding by JB Creatives

.

.

I thought I’d start Friday off with a cheerful September wedding, packed with smiles, sunflowers and personal touches.  Just perfect!  Many thanks to the fabulous Jane at JB Creatives and today’s reader and real bride Liz for making the countdown to the weekend that little bit more lovely.

.

Liz says:  We got engaged in April 2009 at the gorgeous Swinton Castle where we’d spent our first weekend away together. Andrew had arranged it all so that I thought I was going to a work event there, then when I got there he was there on one knee!

We were married on September 24th 2011, at St Mary’s Church in the grounds of Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal with the reception at the lovely Crown Inn in Roecliffe

.

St Mary’s is a very special church as it’s on the estate where I have worked as a wedding co-ordinator for the last four years, and is a redundant church which requires a special licence to be granted in order to marry there.

We chose a relaxed and a little rustic theme with bunting and lots of cakes, and with purple as the main colour to tie everything together.

I chose a lovely floaty simple chiffon and beaded dress from Award Winning Confetti & Lace Harrogate. I asked a local dressmaker to make a shoulder strap which was added on the day.

.

My bridesmaids wore purple dresses from LK Bennett and the ushers wore grey suits from Yorkshire Menswear in Harrogate.

I carried a hand tied bouquet of sunflowers, daisies and gerberas by the fabulous Greenhouse Florists in Ripon, and pretty much everything else was done by friends and family.

We hired a string quartet for the church and a live band for the reception which got everybody up and dancing.

My sister in law did a fab surprise cake table with homemade cupcakes, scones and cakes which went down very well with us and the guests. I made biscuits for the favours and a friend made some great vintage style bunting for the reception venue.

A Wizard Wedding: An Elegant Real Wedding In North Yorkshire – Leonnie & Mark

February 28th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Richard Wynn Davies Photography

.

.

When Richard Wynn Davies told me that he had a Real Wedding based on the bride’s love of Merlin to share with me, my mind boggled, but Leonnie and Mark’s big day is as far from themed as possible.

.

Instead of wizard hats and swords in stones (which actually could have been cool too, but perhaps not in keeping with the grand setting!) the bride drew influences from the things that she loves to put together an altogether classy and elegant wedding in the heart of North Yorkshire.  Fit for a Knight and his Lady, wouldn’t you agree?

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies Photography

.

.

Let’s hear from Leonnie:  We got engaged at Chester Zoo, on a cold rainy September day back in 2010, and were married on 19th November 2011 at Crathorne Hall Hotel, Yarm.

We chose Crathorne Hall after a long search of many other lovely venues. We chose the venue due to the lovely gardens and setting it provided for the day.  We had 70 guests for the wedding breakfast, and spacious rooms Crathorne Hall had to offer was ideal for us to spend the whole day in the same place. We also had 21 rooms booked for our guests!

.

.

.

I’m a bit of a Merlin nut so the table plan was set up in a “Knights of the Round Table” style. Our colour theme was purple.

I carried a bouquet of flowers, white and purple, based on Lisianthus. We asked our florist – Greenhouse Florist, Ripon – for a ‘wild, garden picked’ style. They were lovely!

My dress was from Confetti and Lace in Harrogate. It had a sweetheart neckline with some detail and corset body with an a-line skirt. (beautiful!).  My bridesmaids wore purple sweetheart neckline fitted dresses from Debenhams, (ideal, and a bargain!).  The boys’ suits were hired from Yorkshire Menswear

We had a live jazz band playing during the day, who played ‘Make you feel my love’ whilst we walked down the aisle. Later on in the day, we had a live band playing who kept the dance floor full all night!

Apart from the service itself, our favourite bit was dancing along to the live band – Sunshine Daze – with all our family and friends. It was a brilliant end to an amazing, special day.

After the wedding, we headed off to sunnier climes – Costa Teguise, Lanzarote.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to plan early. It’s amazing how quickly time goes by and you soon end up having to rush around making last minute arrangements. It’s also important to pick a great wedding photographer (we did!) as the photos are very precious memories of the day. We would also say make sure you take time during the day to stop, and have a few minutes to yourself to take it all in. You easily get caught up in the whirlwind of day and wonder where the day has gone. But above all, enjoy it!

.

.
