Real Wedding Recap 2012: Sei La Mia Rosa – A Real Destination Wedding In Sorrento, Italy – Sally & Lee

January 1st, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Over the festive period I’ve been recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy… we’ll be returning to our usual schedule tomorrow!

In this fairly new trade, y’know, the modern profession of wedding blogging, one gets to see a whole load of gorgeous on a daily basis.  But just when you think you are nearing beauty blindness, along comes a Real Wedding that knocks your socks clean off.

.

This words cannot describe how stunning Real Wedding of Northern couple Sally & Lee – sent to me by my new favourite person and friend of the wedding blog Sheffield photographer India Hobson Photography – did just that.  Consider my socks knocked.

.

Thought the New Year was going to be dull?  Think again, as my forecast says jaw dropping!

India says:  Sally and Lee were worried that if they had an Italian photographer they may come across problems with the language barrier and came to me – and I’m so glad that they did. I flew over with one of Sally’s best friends, and stayed for a few nights around the wedding itself; it was a pleasure to be welcomed by all the guests and it was certainly picturesque.

.

.

.

Let’s chat to real bride Sally: We got engaged on Christmas morning at home by the Christmas tree in 2009.  Lee and I met in college and after 10 great years together, I was absolutely over the moon to be engaged and it was our most magical Christmas ever!  We married on 2 August 2011 at Cloister St Francesco in Sorrento, situated along the Amalfi coast in Italy.

We had both agreed on a wedding abroad but wanted to keep a more traditional feel to the ceremony, rather than a beach style wedding. Both Lee and I adore Italy: the food, the culture, the romance, the wine, and the Italian attitude to a laid back lifestyle, embodied in the saying: “dolce far niente” (The sweetness of doing nothing! And yes we have watched Eat Pray Love). After doing our research we stumbled upon the perfect venue, The Cloister St. Francesco in Sorrento, an old monastery dating back to the 8th century.

.

When you walk through the entrance and step into the open space surrounded by ancient archways, columns and pretty greenery, you find the perfect romantic setting to say your vows. When you step out of the Cloister, you are greeted with a spectacular view of the bay of Naples. It is a stunning location along the Amalfi coast and provided the perfect romantic backdrop for our wedding photography.

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

My father and I travelled from The Grand Hotel de la Ville by traditional Surrentine horse drawn carriage. It was a surreal moment and realisation of a dream come true made all the more exciting when spirited Italians sped past us on their Vespas shouting “Ciao bella!”.

.

.

The theme was vintage romance – the venue and setting spoke for itself really.  We chose neutral shades in fitting with the backdrop, coffee and cream for the bridesmaids.

The dress was from Catherine-May Bridal in Honley, near Holmfirth. From the offset it was clear that natural taupe, soft grey and earthy tones were best suited to my own skin tone and hair colour, as opposed to classic white or ivory. The style was a mermaid silhouette with strapless sweetheart neckline, an asymmetrical ruched bodice with shabby chic corsage at the hip and a chapel train. The fabric was French Taffeta in feather grey, which gave the dress a more vintage feel. Everyone commented on the colour, which really made a statement and was very fitting to the surroundings and romance of Italy. It was the only dress that gave me butterflies in my tummy when I tried it on and when I saw the look on my mum’s face, I knew it was ‘The One’. The headpiece was vintage lace with pearls, custom-made at Kula Tsurdiu in Nottingham.

.

My bouquet was a mixture of cream and vintage lilac roses and greenery. My bridesmaid carried cream roses whilst the flower girl had cream silk rose petals, in keeping with the romantic theme.

My chief bridesmaid, Katie, wore a dress by Leeds based fashion designer Lucy Bennett, who runs her own label Roc and Doll. I was able to assist in the design process and wanted the dress to have a Grecian goddess feel to it with flowing chiffon fabric. The dress was one shoulder with rose detailing at the strap, rouching at the bust, high waste line with coffee and cream panels on the skirt and a small train at the back. The flower girl, Rebecca, wore a cream dress from Monsoon with vintage lace detail top, capped sleeves, tulle layered skirt and silk bow tie at the back.

The whole wedding was arranged through a Sorrento based company called Sorrento Sunland, who sourced local suppliers for every aspect of the wedding. They provided an excellent service, responded quickly to queries and were both enthusiastic and supportive every step of the way.

.

.

I have never seen a bride use a parasol before so I felt this added a special touch, especially in the photographs and it also proved to be practical in keeping my face shaded from the sun. A perfect accessory for a wedding abroad! I provided female guests with fans to keep cool as they awaited my arrival to the Cloister.

A personal touch was the name labels on the favours. I attached old fashioned tags with lace and on one side wrote the name of each guest, on the other I wrote romantic phrases in Italian such as ‘per sempre insieme’ (together forever), ‘amo solo te’ (I love only you), ‘sei la mia rosa’ (you are my rose). All the guests were asking me to translate!

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

In Italy the cake was presented on a stand individually portioned and served to the guests as their dessert. Sorrento is famous for its lemon orchards so we chose the light lemon sponge covered in Chantilly cream. It was delicious.

Our reception was at Marameo Beach Restaurant, on a jetty out in the sea. We had our DJ playing chilled out tunes during dinner and as the sun was setting. Then the music got louder and we made our own entertainment! The setting by the cliff face and looking out to sea was absolutely stunning!

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

Both Lee and I agree it is difficult to choose one specific part of the day as we loved every single moment. One aspect we both agreed on was the fact that it was a very intimate affair with close family and friends (32 guests). This meant that we got to spend time with each other as well as our guests and felt overwhelmed by the love and support from all those who shared our special day. It was relaxed and informal. We both loved our first dance to Michael Buble’s ‘Everything’. Lee got very emotional and it was lovely when our friends and family joined in.

.

As the bride, if I had to choose one part of the day it would have to be stepping into the cloister and the ceremony that followed. It was such a fairy tale, overwhelming emotional moment floating down the isle with my Dad by my side. One I shall cherish forever. The string quartet playing Pachelbel’s Canon as I entered the Cloister was absolutely beautiful and the romantic music played throughout set the perfect atmosphere.

.

The romantic reading by my friend, Carolyne Gregory was also a special moment. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house.

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

We went to Thailand on our honeymoon. We spent 5 nights in Bangkok at the Banyan Tree Hotel, famous for its Vertigo restaurant on the top of the hotel on the 61st floor. We enjoyed dinner there on our last night.

.

We visited the Grand Palace Buddhist temples, watched Muay Thai boxing, visited the floating markets and had outfits tailor made. We then flew down to Phuket and stayed at the Indigo Pearl spa resort for two weeks the relaxing portion of the honeymoon.

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to relax, keep calm and take in every special moment of the day. Don’t let it pass you by worrying unnecessarily, it will all go to plan. Also remember to spend time with your new hubby as well as the guests and have fun together.

.

Anyone considering a wedding abroad should contact their local registrar who will explain the procedures according to where you choose to marry. I can’t recommend this enough, especially as you can do it all again on your return by throwing another big knees up and show off the dress of your dreams for one last time!

.

.

HEARTCongratulations Sally & Lee! HEART

Happy Valentines Day! You’re The One For me Fatty! A Real Engagement – Alex & Ged

February 14th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.i love you more than yorkshire pudding

.

Happy Valentine’s Day Brides Up North!  It’s true!  I do!  And I love Yorkshire pudding a whole lot.

.

However you are celebrating today, I’m sending a whole lot of love your way (and totally buying into the commercial “nonsense” – husband, take note!).  I’ll be snuggling up with my other half this evening at home and taking a very very very long overdue night off together.  Bliss.

.

I couldn’t let the day go by without a super lovely blog post and Alex and Ged’s loved up engagement shoot by India Hobson Photography does super lovely superbly.  Enjoy!

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

Alex says:  We got engaged at the Christmas dinner table in front of all of Ged’s family. Was a complete surprise! Ged had to borrow his sister in law’s mother’s ring! We are planning on getting married next January, in Rotherham as that is where we grew up.

Proposal DIY! A Self Portrait Real Engagement In Sheffield – India & Lee

January 16th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

Oh my goodness!  I am SO IN LOVE with this fabulous engagement story and DIT (do it themselves!) photo shoot from newly engaged couple (and professional photographers) India and Lee of India Hobson Photography.  Their lovely love story, stunning images and frankly, drop dead gorgeous style make this one of my very favourite wedding blog posts to date.

.

(I long to be this cool.)

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

Let’s hear from this talented Bride To Be: Lee proposed to me not long after midnight on New Year’s Eve/day in one of our favourite bars where a lot of our friends work – I’m not really fussed about celebrating NYE & was particularly grumpy about this one as all our friends would be working, hence ending up there! Lee asked me if I’d like to get engaged, and I said ‘yeah!’ like it was just a normal question, then he put a ring in my hand and I was so shocked and elated that I cried for about 10 minutes before I could coherently tell my friends!

.

It was a complete surprise because Lee’s rubbish at keeping secrets, so I was amazed that I didn’t suspect anything. He knows that I didn’t want him to do it in front of everyone, so this was the perfect way to do it and still be able to share with everyone that I’m close to.

.

He gets extra points too as the ring fits perfectly!

We’re both creative, and don’t really have a taste for the traditional ‘wedding’ thing, and ideally we want to get married outdoors, but we’ll be compromising a little as we don’t want to go abroad – so the search is on for that place we both feel is right. Some time next year I imagine, because we both want to handle most of the details & to involve the artistic skills of our friends & family.

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

We met when we both studied photography together at the Manchester School of Art, he’s from County Durham & I’m a Sheffield girl.  I was the geek at uni that most people probably had reservations about; put my hand up to answer every question, teacher’s pet, smart remark-for-everything-kind-of-girl. I worked solidly for my first year and hardly talked to anyone on the course.

.

Something changed in 2nd year, and I started to make friends, especially with the boys & found that I just wanted to spend more & more time with Lee. He made me laugh, we talked photography & work non-stop & found excuses to see each other (he stole my keys once to get to come to my house!) and went to a house party where I was sure he’d make a move. I felt 15 all over again! I was so disappointed when he didn’t kiss me.

.

Of course, eventually he did.

.

.

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

We’ve lived together from almost the beginning, and I’ve never lost that nervous feeling in my stomach; we studied together, worked together & rarely spend time apart – I don’t think there was a lightning moment of “this is it” realisation, it’s something we’ve grown into.

.

.

Lee makes me laugh uncontrollably, makes me feel safe & puts so much effort into doing special things for me – and gets really annoyed if they don’t work! Working in the industry that I do (I’m a photographer & artist) I really value that he appreciates what I do, & understands that although it’s not a conventional occupation, it’s what I do. Lee knows exactly when I need a bath, a drink or a chippy tea! I love that he gets obsessive about his bike, and puts everything into what he does. That’s inspiring.

.

Lee says: I noticed India at uni because I didn’t really know where she was from, she has an exotic thing & kind of foreign look so I was curious. She’s got a good sense of humour & doesn’t fuss or get all sensitive like most girls, plus she’s a tank at work. And she’s hot.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

India Hobson Photography

.

.

.

We decided to do this DIY shoot as after telling all of your family, and changing our facebook status it felt like a natural progression! My personal practice as an artist involves a lot of self portraiture, and I work as a wedding photographer also, so we thought it would be something unique to bring the two together. We’re both resourceful & creative and approached it the way we do with everything else…

.

I especially enjoyed it – mainly because Lee was so embarrassed & I got to make fun of him for once! We prepared the quote cards & took to the roof – we both moved to my hometown of Sheffield & fell head over heels with the city, hence the skyline as a backdrop. We both love the elements, and the sky fits us both perfectly.

.

We used a tripod with the self timer and also the shutter release that I have and played around. Luckily we’re both photographers so it wasn’t really a problem shooting it, and that represents us too. It’s a fundamental part of our relationship so makes sense.

Since becoming engaged I’ve got the wedding bug and have been hooked on wedding blogs – Brides Up North does exactly what it says on the tin and features local suppliers and stories, so is much more relevant to me than most. Its a great source of inspiration too.  I’ll be back to share our Real Wedding photographs too!

Well hello there!  I’ve a little couture treat for you this morning on the wedding blog to ward away those post Christmas blues.  Call it a BRIDAL FASHION EXCLUSIVE!

.

.

The White Room Maid/ India Hobson Photography

.

.

Just before the festive break, I blogged about the forthcoming launch of The White Room Maid by Kate Harrod, a bespoke bridesmaid collection especially for The White Room Sheffield

.

.The White Room Maid/ India Hobson Photography

.

.

Offering a capsule collection of bridesmaid gowns and a couture service for Mother of the Bride to compliment the boutique’s range of gowns by Jenny Packham, Cymbeline, Claire Pettibone and Stephanie Allin, Kate, the winner of the “Bridal Buyer 2011 Student Bridal Designer Of The Year Award", will operate under the “White Room Maid by Kate Harrod” label.

Today, in this Brides Up North bridal fashion exclusive, The White Room Sheffield and Kate Harrod unveil the Spring/ Summer 2012 collection with a special curtain call shoot at The Lyceum in Sheffield, a beautiful theatre which has been an iconic Sheffield space for many years.

.

.

.

Chloe Curry of The White Room Sheffield says:  Great design, intelligence and thought went into The White Room Maid’s initial creations. We took inspiration from real women: those who embody femininity, timeless elegance and rock and roll glamour and created four capsule gowns in chiffon and silk with leather belts and tulle skirts to create a modern and memorable bridesmaid look.

.

The White Room Maid

.

.

We wanted to create a sense of “getting ready for the show”, so used the models to create a sense that they together were helping each other perfect their own look to support the leading lady – the bride – even though she wasn’t there on set.

GwenA bold and eclectic gown combining soft charcoal chiffon with ash grey leather, we took inspiration from Gwen Stefani, one of the celebrity world’s recognized fashion trend-setters. With a rock and roll feel and a Hollywood glamour undertone,  Gwen encapsulates the heart of our collection, where we seek to play with new and interesting style influences, fabrics and textures to make bridesmaid wear feel very 2012.

Evangeline – Drawn from a vintage influence, we wanted to embody retro looks without looking dated. Evangeline is constructed in a platinum pink chiffon and silk, with a 1920′s inspired bat wing sleeve that can be worn draped over the arm or pinned with a dress brooch to create a one shoulder effect. Debbie Carlisle of DC Bouquets has made some beautiful pieces to wear on the sleeve including a soft metal clip with a striking vintage brooch. We suggest pairing this with a ’40s pin-up, swept-up hairstyle or ’20s-style hairpieces for a striking look that embodies looks of old but looks very now.

Marilyn - Named after the icon herself, Marilyn is a full skirted tulle and silk chiffon gown which was influenced by Monroe as her sole purpose for dressing was to show off her body in a fun, flirty and sexy way. This is exactly what Marilyn does whilst resonating with 50′s femininity and 2012 modern, clean lines and colour. Pair with a soft platinum leather belt for a kooky, rock and roll edge to a soft and flirty gown.

LottieThe girl of the group – soft, short and angelic – Lottie is created from stardust chiffon and silk to create a gown with fluidity, movement and sway. We wanted to make a gown that looked young and fresh, that is perfect for the country wedding with a tea party twist or the cocktail party where the gown is just effortless and sassy yet screams couture. Pair with one of DC Bouquets’ soft leather headbands or platinum embellished cuffs for a rock and roll edge.

Chloe Curry of The White Room Sheffield says: We are delighted to announce Kate Harrod as our in-house designer.  Initially launching with a capsule collection of bridesmaid gowns and offering a couture service for Mother of the Bride to compliment our range of gowns by Jenny Packham, Cymbeline, Claire Pettibone and Stephanie Allin, Kate will operate under the “White Room Maid by Kate Harrod” label.

.

We want The White Room Sheffield to be about individuality and dedication to a Bride’s desires for her wedding.  We wanted to bring something contemporary and fresh into the industry.  The initial range launches in the New Year and will be extended throughout 2012 to offer a full range aimed at meeting the needs of all members of the bridal party, concentrating on the co-ordination between the wedding gown and the need for other to express their own personality and flatter their individual body shape.  We want to make the whole process of dressing the bridal party a fun, refreshing an uplifting experience that sets the tone for the big day, factoring in modern elegance with wear-ability and comfort.

.

The initial collection will revolve around offering an alternative to the High Street and off the peg ranges that currently exist.  A large amount of effort has gone into ensuring that we hit an “achievably exclusive” price point for our brides and her party.

.

.

To compliment Kate’s new label, a range of exclusive accessories by Debbie Carlisle of DC Bouquets will be launched.  The designs promise glamour, sparkle and a few textural surprises.
