Real Wedding Recap Winter 2013: Molto Bella. Maggie Sottero For A Real Destination Wedding In Sorrento, Italy – Laura & Stuart

December 24th, 2013 | Julia Braime

Its holiday season here on the blog, and as the team take a break until to rest and recharge for what’s set to be the biggest and best year yet at Brides Up North HQ, we’ll be leaving you with a reduced blogging schedule so that you still get your daily dose of wedding pretty.

Usual service will recommence on 2nd January 2014,  but in the meantime watch out for recaps of our favourite Real Weddings in 2013.  Drop in every day for the very, very prettiest wedding inspiration and if you are a Brides Up North bride, to see if your Real Wedding was one of our top picks.

India Hobson Weddings

So here’s a thing!  Today’s real bride Laura has my job.  No, not my job as editor of Brides Up North, but my old job, the one I packed in to do a crazy little thing like follow my dreams and become a full time writer, events planner and professional wedding blogger.

I love my old work team (hello guys, I hope you are reading!) and Laura seems to fit right in, so I know that she’s a lovely lady.  I’ve never met Laura in person, but call it serendipity that when she announced that she was getting married, my boss Andrew told her about this here wedding blog and she was hooked!  She even sourced her suppliers via our Directory pages, and she’s here to share the results with us today.

Now that’s what I call a happy ending.

Laura says: We got engaged under a tree in the Borghese Gardens in Rome in September 2011. We’d gone to Rome for Stu’s 30th Birthday and it was very romantic.

India Hobson Weddings

We tied the knot on 3rd April 2013 at Cloisters of San Francesco in Sorrento, Italy. Our reception was held at Castore, which is a restaurant in the hills run by Don Pedro and his family.

When we’d spoken about getting married, we’d both agreed that we wanted to do it abroad. We chose Italy because we got engaged there and Sorrento seemed like the idyllic setting. We saw a picture of the Cloisters and fell in love with it. We hadn’t been before so it was a bit of a risk! We chose Don Pedro’s for our reception after reading reviews on Trip Advisor. We weren’t disappointed. Don Pedro and his family were amazing and couldn’t do enough for us. We drank local prosecco and ate an Italian feast!

We wanted the day to be fun and elegant and chose a teal colour base. I had a particular colour in my mind and I just couldn’t find a perfect match. In the end, we had various shades of teal for different things. My Mum reminded me that it didn’t really matter if the bridesmaids knickers didn’t match the wedding invitations and she was right!

My dress was a Maggie Sottero gown called Bernadette from Angel Brides in Horsforth. I’d seen it online and fell in love with it. Even from the pictures, I knew it was the one I wanted. It was simply a matter of trying it on to make sure. I absolutely loved my dress. It was completely different to what I thought I wanted. Heidi and the Angel Brides team were fantastic. They went above and beyond.

India Hobson Weddings

My bridesmaid wore dresses by True Bride, which we also got from Angel Brides. Stuart, his best man, my Dad and my brother all wore suits from TM Lewin in Leeds.

As we were married abroad, the majority of our suppliers were based in Sorrento. Don Pedro arranged the food, wine, flowers, car and a harpist for the ceremony. However, we decided to take our photographer with us. We met India after seeing one of her weddings on Brides up North. We knew after our first meeting that India would be fantastic and she was. She’s a wonderful person who is more than a wedding photographer. The images she captures are truly beautiful.

I carried a bouquet of white roses, rosemary and olive leaves. My bridesmaids carried white roses and olive leaves.

My favourite moment  of the day was when I walked into the Cloisters to Clair de Lune playing on the harp and saw Stu. All my nerves just disappeared.

India Hobson Weddings

We decided to write our own vows. It was such a special part of the day as it was really personal. It was quite funny because, even though we’d written our vows separately, the sentiments were very similar. It was really special.

We had compiled a few playlists on our iPad before we went to Italy. The evening reception was really good fun as our friends took it in turns to DJ. It caused a bit of a competition to see who could get the most people up dancing!

Honeymoon-wise, we had a few days before and after the wedding in Italy. We spent a week in Rhodes at the end of June and have a trip to New York planned for November.

My top tip for other Brides Up North is a cliché, but do what you want to do and don’t worry about keeping other people happy. It’s your wedding. It’s the one day where it is acceptable for you and your future husband to be selfish!

Congratulations Laura & Stuart!

Classic Sparkle: Sottero & Midgley For A Real Wedding In The North West – Janine & Andrew

July 19th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

India Hobson Weddings

.

.

And (whoop) there it is:  Friday.

.

Today we are in Chorley to celebrate the wedding of Brides Up North Featured Suppliers Janine and Andrew of Itsy Mini Glass Bottles.  Their big day, shot by wedding blog favourite India Hobson Weddings, was a creative and classy affair, with just a touch of twinkle!

.

.

India Hobson Weddings

.

.

Janine says:  Our wedding, on the 30th March 2013, was held at Shaw Hill Golf Club in Chorley; a location that was only 30 minutes from our home town. As soon as we visited the venue, we fell in love with the building, it’s surroundings, the staff and more importantly – the food.

.

As soon as we got engaged, we couldn’t wait to get the planning underway and were eager to set a date. Once we decided on the venue and date, Andy created us a little website to inform guests of the main details, just for a bit of fun and to get everyone excited. The site is still live.

We decided to go with Easter bank holiday weekend because it’s generally pleasant weather around the end of March / start of April…or so we thought. Two days before our wedding the snow was still falling! Despite panicking slightly, I knew the day would be amazing whatever the weather decided to do on the day.

.

Luckily for us, the sun was on our side from first thing in the morning of the wedding and it decided to stay that way. Needless to say, everyone was smiling as a result! I could not have wished for better weather; it was absolutely glorious.

Picking my wedding dress was amazing, it was probably one of my most favourite parts of the preparations. I decided to go with a Sottero and Midgley dress from The Confetti Box in Eccles, Manchester. The colour scheme of our wedding was Midnight Blue, so our bridesmaids wore Dessy dresses from Alison Burgess Couture in Stockport.

.

.

India Hobson Weddings

.

.

Andy and I pretty much knew exactly what we wanted in terms of flowers, and once we met Kate from Kate’s Fabulous Flowers in Blackpool, we hired her straight away. Hiring people to work with on the day is very important, it’s not only about their talent, but you need to feel comfortable with them. That said, our hair and makeup artist was Sarah Meredith who was amazing on the day; she even gave us a full day of hair and makeup trials so the girls were all happy with what she did. It was also another excuse to have a girlie get together!

Andy is Co-Founder of Shape Design Studio, so he is very creative and wanted to deal with that side of things. India Hobson was an obvious choice for us and these are the pictures you are seeing today. She is an amazing talent and good friend, her images capture so much emotion and atmosphere it’s hard to describe. We just think her images capture our day perfectly.

For the wedding video, we chose www.myweddingdayvideo.co.uk. Our main aim was to produce a ‘story’ rather than just a typical wedding video. We wanted to capture the personality and atmosphere of the day. We now have something to show everyone that makes them laugh (as well as shedding a tear or two), and to bring back all them raw memories from the day. You can watch the wedding video here.

.

I am delighted with the video and can’t recommend this company enough. The boys even created a special video as some of our guests wanted to produce a ‘Wedding Harlem Shake’ for us as a surprise, which can be viewed here.

.

.

In terms of the ceremony room we decided to have an arch at the end of the aisle decorated with roses; an ivory carpet running down the aisle sprinkled with midnight blue petals; an extra rose in each end aisle chair; tall martini glasses full of ivory roses and lilies and also smaller martini glasses filled with my favourite chocolates Ferrero Rochers in the conservatory area.

.

.

India Hobson Weddings

.

.

India Hobson Weddings

.

.

Into the dinner, we wanted to give something personalised to our wedding guests as a favour, this was difficult because we wanted to keep costs down but also make it look special. Andy came up with the idea of giving guests a mini glass bottle filled with alcoholic spirits. To keep our theme of the invitations consistent, we included our wedding logo on a sticker on the reverse side. Everyone commented how much they loved the favours and I am so glad we went with that option. We now run our own online favour company called Itsy.

.

.

India Hobson Weddings

.

.

India Hobson Weddings

.

.

During the dinner, we also wanted to engage and interact our guests as there was a handful of couples who didn’t know many people. We decided to do a little quiz about ‘the bride and groom’. The winner of the quiz won a bottle of Champagne.

.

.

India Hobson Weddings

.

.

India Hobson Weddings

.

.

Andy’s favourite part of the day was the speeches; he was looking forward to hearing what my dad and his best man had to say about him. For me, it was one of the highlights of the day: capturing the speeches on the wedding video brought back just how emotional and entertained we all were!

.

.

From the first whistle, the dance floor was filled at the reception. I danced that hard, I even forgot to eat the evening food!  I couldn’t have wished for anything better. Everyone decides to choose different themes and ideas on their wedding day, but I honestly wouldn’t have changed anything.

The Editorials: Va-Va-Groom!

February 18th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Wedding Magazine

.

.

In this new blog series, The Editorials, I share my pre-published offline content, online.  I write on a freelance basis for numerous regional and National glossies, and rather than be relegated to being rather posh chip paper, I thought that my words might be useful to my online readers who didn’t manage to pick up a print copy of my features.  Double the pretty!

.

.

Wedding Magazine

.

.

The second instalment in this series (click here to see the first, focussing on the trend for all white weddings) catches up on a column I wrote for Wedding Magazine before Christmas, all about giving your groom some va-va-voom!

.

.

Wedding Magazine

.

.

I wrote: The days of identikit grooms are long gone. You might be preoccupied with selecting the perfect wedding gown, but you can bet that your other half is also giving some careful thought to his own wedding day look. For him too, this is a day where he wants raise the style stakes and feel that little bit special.

Luckily, there has never been more of a sartorial selection for a groom to choose from. Whether he is a traditionalist looking for a classically cut morning suit or an individual wanting to cut a dash with quirky accessories, it’s now acceptable for the groom to look beyond a hired waistcoat and cravat. Whilst it’s true that his choice of attire should complement the overall style of the bridal party, some of my favourite wedding day images are those where the personality of the groom shines through.

The cravat caveat

Rather than sticking to the status quo, encourage your man to mix things up with by adding a special touch. How about a colourful bow tie, socks, braces, sharp shoes or a neckerchief?

For a relaxed celebration or destination wedding he needn’t be trussed up like a turkey. Work with the style of his surroundings and opt for light fabrics and a pale colour palette.

Botanic Beauty! A Real Relaxed Wedding In Sheffield – Anna & Matt

July 30th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

A Real Wedding in Sheffield by India Hobson Weddings

.

.

Morning Brides Up North!  How was your weekend?

.

I spent the weekend working on some special behind the scenes wedding blog projects and some new material for blog posts that will be appearing on your screen shortly.  Before running the Brides Up North blog, events and brand I couldn’t have imagined enjoying a fully working weekend, but they are now becoming the norm – and I wouldn’t change things for the world.  The need to put in even more extra hours stems from all the bridal freelance work that I have been taking on recently alongside developing the business on home turf.  Working hard to spread the Northern Revolution’s message beyond the pages of this site is definitely worth it.

.

This post was one of my very favourite to work on (somewhere between the early hours and brunch on Saturday morning), and certainly got my weekend off to a great start.  Sent to me by real Bride Anna and the fabulous Sheffield wedding photographer India Hobson Weddings – who also shot the official photographs for the Brides Up North Tweet Up Yorkshire this year – this pretty and personal Sheffield wedding at the Botanic Gardens is bloomin’ beautiful.  Happy Monday!

India says:  I loved shooting Anna & Matt’s wedding.  The weather held out for us, and the glasshouses gave such stunning light that it was actually a pleasure when it did start to drizzle a little! I love how relaxed Anna & Matt were, not only at the wedding but when I met with them before – they trusted me completely and I knew that Anna (a graphic designer) would love for me to be creative with the images.

.
I had endless conversations with their guests and every single one started with them saying "It’s such a perfect day isn’t it?" there was so much love for these two and it made me all warm and fuzzy inside!
I loved the cake, and I wanted to eat the flowers because they looked so good.

.

Our bride Anna says: We got engaged on 2nd March 2012. It was a really short engagement for us – which is what we wanted. We got engaged whilst sitting at home on the sofa. Matt had the ring tucked into his cardigan pocket.

We got married on 14th July 2012 at The Botanical Gardens in Sheffield with our reception at The Chimney House, Kelham Island.

.

We chose the Botanical Gardens because we had spent some time there before and thought it was really pretty. When we went to look around it was a beautiful sunny day, and it just seemed perfect. We had been looking for somewhere that we had both enjoyed visiting previously; that was quite informal but was still very special.  We fell in love with Chimney House before we even looked around. We knew that was where we wanted to have our reception instantly as Matt used to live near there and we love the area so such. Inside was even better than we could have hoped and everything just fit in perfectly with our idea of how we wanted the day to be.

.

We didn’t really have a theme, we just wanted it to be fun and relaxed. Our colours started as mustard and grey but ended up having some pale blue and pale pink thrown in for good measure! I found it hard to stick to a particular scheme because I kept changing my mind!

.

.

A Real Wedding in Sheffield by India Hobson Weddings

.

.

I definitely knew that I wanted a short dress. This proved quite hard to come by and many shops didn’t have many in stock. As we planned a short engagement, this also limited the kind of dress I could get in time.

I ended up going to The Bridal Rooms in Chesterfield and they had ‘the dress’- which was actually a bridesmaids dress made in ivory! It was perfect- very swirly and 50’s in its style.

.

We never planned to have the bridesmaids in the same dress, we thought we would just stick to a certain colour scheme. However when we went shopping, we saw a beautiful grey dress in Noa Noa and both of my bridesmaids loved it! It suited the colour scheme, it was so pretty and not too ‘bridesmaidy’ which none of us

wanted! The dresses were perfect and looked amazing on the day!

.

Matt bought his suit from Jigsaw and had shoes by Clarks Originals.

Where possible we wanted to choose very local suppliers. Our rings – and my engagement ring- were by Jennie Gill a jeweller working in Sheffield at Persistence Works. Her work is amazing and I knew I wanted a Jennie Gill ring way before we got engaged! Luckily Matt knew this and asked Jennie to design a ring especially for our engagement.

We got all of the wedding flowers from Fresh Ideas in Chesterfield. My mum had used this florist for years and they always did really beautiful flowers.  I really wanted quite a wild looking freshly picked bouquet. I wanted to bring in the yellows of my colour scheme. The result was such a delicate pretty bouquet with craspedia, spray roses and other little flowers.

We decided to have a wedding bus to take all of our guests to the botanical gardens and back to the Chimney House. We hired a London Routemaster from Vintage Vehicle Hire in Doncaster. This was such a success and the guests loved it!

.

It took the guests to the botanical gardens, then returning to the Leopold Hotel to collect myself and the bridesmaids.  After the ceremony it took us on a scenic tour of the Rivelin Valley around Sheffield. It was an excellent way to keep all of the guests together and keep in the party spirit!

We didn’t want to splash out on a huge cake as it wasn’t something that we felt was very important to us. We ordered a two tier cake from M&S that I decorated myself with pom pom trimmings and little ceramic birds.  Matt’s mum also kindly made us a yummy chocolate cake and buns that went down a storm.

We love soul music so we hired a local soul DJ – Debbie Soul – to play some tunes later in the evening to get people dancing.  We were also so lucky to have my bridesmaid’s brother Colin Taylor to play guitar throughout the meal. My top tip for other Brides Up North would be that you can totally arrange a wedding in less than 6 months!

Make sure that you think about what is important to you and what kind of wedding you want. Our wedding was exactly how we wanted it and everyone said the whole day was unique to us. This made it even more special.
