Real Wedding Recap Summer 2013: A Jenny Packham Gown For A Chic Real Wedding At The Baltic Centre For Contemporary Art – Emily & Jonny

June 24th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Its holiday season here on the blog, and as the team take a break until to rest and recharge for the second half of what’s set to be the biggest and best year year yet at Brides Up North HQ, we’ll be leaving you with a reduced blogging schedule so that you still get your daily dose of wedding pretty.

.

Usual service will recommence on 1st July 2013,  but in the meantime watch out for recaps of our favourite Real Weddings so far in 2013, plenty of eye candy, new features that we won’t be able to wait to share, some special supplier showcases and a couple of surprises too!

These pages just seem to be getting prettier and prettier…first shared on the wedding blog at the beginning of April, today we join Emily and John for their cool and contemporary Real Wedding on the banks of the River Tyne.  With imagery by Katy Melling Photography

Emily says:  Jonny asked me to marry him in November 2011 in the New Forest and we were married on 23 June 2012 at The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.  We chose the Baltic as we loved the views of the quayside and the feeling of space the venue offered.

We wanted a modern yet relaxed look and I hope that’s what we achieved.  We chose accent colours of grey/silver and white -  we wanted to go for colours that would compliment the venue and give us a classic look.

I wore a Jenny Packham gown which I was lucky enough to snap up at a sample sale in London and a bird cage head piece which I got from Browns Brides. I loved my dress and wish I could find an excuse to wear it again! Jonny wore a Spencer Hart suit.

The floor length silver bridesmaids dresses were from Monsoon. We had so many groomsmen that we simply asked them all to wear their own grey suits which was a bit risky as we didn’t have the chance to see them beforehand. Luckily they didn’t let us down and all scrubbed up very well!

Our flowers were from 5th Avenue Flowers on Queen Street in Newcastle – they did an amazing job.

We used Louise Lunn Makeup Artist and Katy Melling Photography both of whom we would highly recommend. We  were also very happy with the Malmaison Hotel where the bridal party got ready and where we stayed after the celebrations had finished.

A friend of the family very kindly put a ribbon on his posh car and drove me and the bridesmaids over the bridge from the Malmaison, where we were staying, to the venue.

Our favourite part of the day was probably the ceremony – it felt very special to be standing in front of such a lovely view of the Tyne saying our vows in front of all our friends and family. We also loved the evening celebrations – it was a relief to be able to let our hair down once the formalities were all over.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to do all they can to ensure that the staff at the venue know exactly what they expect in advance so that they can relax on the day. It’s over so quickly and you don’t want to be worrying about the finer details on the day.

Real Wedding Recap 2012: A Proper Winter Wonderland! A Real Wedding In The North East – Rachel & Ryan

December 24th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Over the festive period I’ll be recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy…

.

Rachel and Ryan's Wedding at Rockcliffe Hall, County Durham by Katy Melling Photography

.

.

Starting off our seasonal recap in style, today I am honoured to share the Real Wedding of one of my best girlfriends in the whole wide World, Rachel. I was lucky enough to be a bridesmaid for Rachel and Ryan, and was more than a little nervous that one of my favourite photographers and Brides Up North Featured Supplier Katy Melling Photography would be there to see me descend into drunken Christmas wedding merriment at what has to be one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever attended (you’ll see!*).

.

.

Rachel and Ryan's wedding at Rockcliffe Hall, Co. Durham

.

.

After all, elegance aside, this was also the wedding where I could be found singing shouting Christmas carols at 4am, where my husband set fire to himself on an aisle candle (yes really!) and where a faux snow fight left everyone twinkling!  Proper Geordie fun! I did catch Katy snapping a shot of me taking a big slug of white wine, but it hasn’t made it into the final edit.  Thanks Katy!

.

Without further ado, over to my best friend Rachel: We got engaged on 10th December 2010 in Central Park in New York and were married at home in County Durham on Sunday 18th December 2011, at Rockliffe Hall.  We said our vows in the Rockliffe Suite and then had a drinks reception in the Old Hall while the Rockliffe Suite was done up for the wedding breakfast.

.

.

As soon as we visited Rockliffe we loved it. On the practical side we had a large guest list and it was able to cater for 180. It also had 60 bedrooms so all of the guests who wanted to stay were able to be accommodated.

.

It seemed a bit more luxurious than some of the other venues we visited and was decorated to our taste. It is about 45 minutes away from Newcastle so was fairly easy for our guests to get to. It is just a lovely hotel and felt cosy and we thought it would suit the wintery/ Christmassy feel we were after. It has a lovely area called the Old Hall which we used for the drinks reception and also has a fabulous spa which our guests got good use of the day before and the day after the wedding.

.

.

Obviously the wedding was very near Christmas so overall we had a bit of a Winter Wonderland theme.

We also had some Christmas touches like snow on the tables and bauble name holders (by Cox & Cox) and candy canes as favours for people to hang on their Christmas trees after the wedding.

.

Overall, I wanted the wedding to be very white. We had no colour in our flowers and I wanted the room to look white, snowy, twinkly and pretty.  The bridesmaids wore an aubergine colour which was reflected in the ushers’ ties but other than that the rest of the wedding was all white.

My dress was Jenny Packham. It was very detailed and glitzy around the neckline which went down my back and then it had a tulle skirt. I also had a Jenny Packham headdress. I tried on a Jenny Packham dress in a shop in Newcastle but then went to her shop in London as it was a good excuse for a weekend away with my Mum. There were a few that I liked but the one I chose was most appropriate for a Christmas wedding.

My bridesmaids wore aubergine one shoulder dresses.  The designer was Alvina Valenta and I got them from Lily White Bridal in Jesmond.

We had a lot of music and entertainment during our reception: my good friend Emma Kendall sang during the service, and then we enjoyed the Opus 4 String Quartet, carol singers and some singing waiters, before hitting the dance floor to Jeff Dingle and the Moonswing Trio.

.

Thinking about favourite moments, my mum and dad had organised the singing waiters as a surprise for Ryan and me. I loved this and we were all up dancing on our chairs for an hour so that was really fun. In general I just loved it all as I wanted it to be a massive party and that’s what it was. I also loved the girly time on the morning of the wedding with the bridesmaids and all my family.

We had a simple cake made by Gemma at Love Lily Cakes. It was all white and had a flower appliqué on it. We had 3 tiers which consisted of Victoria sponge cake, chocolate cake and lemon cake.

After the excitement of the wedding we had a mini moon for a few days to the Feversham Arms in Helmsley and we are hoping to go to New York at the end of the year. We live in Dubai so we wanted to stay in the North East to enjoy the rest of the festive season with our friends and families.

Wild Thing! A Real Wedding – Alison & Tris

October 21st, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

I’ve saved something special to round off the week today as this Real Wedding submission comes from one very fabulous lady.  Today’s bride has travelled the World, beaten cancer, bagged a groom online and to top it all off chose to get married at the zoo, in one of my favourite Jenny Packham designs of all time.  She even recorded her feelings in the week leading up to her wedding for posterity on Facebook (see her sweet and hilarious status updates below!).

.

I am totally in awe of this remarkable lady and kind of want her to be my new best friend.  Alison’s positivity and life life to the full attitude shines through, and I love that.  With that in mind, have a brilliant Friday Brides Up North!

Alison’s Facebook musings, the week of her wedding:

.

.

Sat 4th June
Hells bells – this time next week I’ll be on my way to Chester to get married. Bl**dy hell ……. Bl**dy hell ……. but in a good way!!

.

.
Sun 5th June
I’m told that as this week progresses, I will plunge deeper & deeper into meltdown & that I should give daily updates so you can all chart my nervous breakdown! My main concern today is if I will be able to wear a vest under my wedding dress! I’ve been googling weather websites & finally found one for Chester which said it would be 30 degrees. I was very excited until I realised it was Chester Arizona!

.

.
Mon 6th June
5 days to go! Have discovered that magic knickers aren’t really magic at all. They just push the flab up into your arm pits. No bride wants B(r)ad Pitts on her wedding day.  Have emptied M&S of every kind of flesh coloured pants. Am not taking any chances!

.

.
Tues 7th June
Is very excited to confirm that the ceremony is being performed by a media celebrity! No, not Liza Minnelli – while watching the ‘Andy & Hannah from Colwyn Bay’ edition of ‘Don’t Tell the Bride’ (for the second time) – essential viewing for all Brides to be – I spotted our lovely registrar Carol, doing the ‘I do’. How weird is that!
.

.
Weds 8th June

3 days to go! Was woken up in the night by the cat trying to eat a dead bird in my new wedding shoes. If I could replicate what happened next, I’d be giving Usain Bolt a run for his money in next years Olympics! Bad Charley!
.

.
Thurs 9th June

2 days to go – and it’s also five years today since Tris and I went on our first date. What a 5 years – I’ve travelled round the world, been made redundant twice, Tris moved in, I got cancer, got engaged, I got a new immune system (& new hair), kicked cancer’s butt (hopefully) and in 2 days I get to marry the man who has stuck with me throughout this crazy roller coaster. I’m a lucky girl.  Manicure & pedicure – check. Lime & ginger scrub and body glow – check. I’m starting to transform into a bride!!!

.

.
Fri 10th June
1 day to go – and Charley is now wearing his special wedding collar! To all our guests travelling from far and wide today – have a good journey and travel safely. Am so excited, trying hard not to bubble over and peak too soon. Oh My God – I’m now entering the ‘Wedding Weekend’ planning spreadsheet!  The Sale and Altrincham Messenger have been on the phone – and we’re on! They want to do an article! I’m like Max Clifford!  Tris is in Chester, I’m in Sale with Dad and sister. I’ve ticked the last thing off my list. Night night Alison Staples. Tomorrow a whole new chapter begins!

.

.
Sat 11th June – Wedding Day!
Holy Matrimony Batman! I’ve had no sleep – but the sun is shining. Right – breath – gather – shall I go and get married? Absof*****lutely!!

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: FourT4 Photography

.

.

Over to Alison for the full story:  Tris and I met when I fibbed about my age and went boy shopping on the internet three weeks after having booked a five month around the World trip.  We not only survived this separation, but my cancer diagnosis which culminated in me having a stem cell transplant in April 2010.

.

.

We got engaged just after I became ill on ‘The Lovers Island’ (pure fluke) off Anglesey with Tris buying me a fabulous vintage style Steven Stone engagement ring which was much admired over the next eight months by my chemo nurses!

.

After a positive scan result we took the plunge and decided to set the date (timed to put enough distance between my illness and the wedding for my hair to grow back). There was only one place that felt right. With my degree and PhD in Zoology and Tris having lived in Africa for two years – Oakfield Manor at Chester Zoo was perfect.  In addition, with all the help and support that we had received from family and friends, I was determined to put on a really big party to say thank you and with nearly 50 children invited what better place than the zoo?

.

.

.

When you have a fabulous venue like a zoo, you don’t need to worry any more about other gimmicks or themes, though there were quite a few blue butterflies dotted around on invitations, orders of service and bridesmaids dresses.

.

I tried hard to save money where I could so that the budget could be used to invite more people and add little touches which would make a big difference. For example, as a nod to Tris’ London roots we booked a red London Routemaster wedding bus to transport guests from the centre of Chester out to the zoo, while I arrived in a peacock blue Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.

.

I continued the butterfly theme by wearing a Jenny Packham dress called Papillon and a Flo & Percy headpiece. My flowers were huge blue and purple orchids sculptured by The Design Element.

Winter Elegance, A Real Wedding – Chloe & Kieren

October 20th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Whoot!  You go away for three days and it’s chaos when you return!  Right now my life is all deadlines, deadlines, deadlines, but you know what?  I wouldn’t have it any other way.

.

It’s easy to let everyday stresses - especially when you are planning a wedding – get on top of you, but this week, just try to take a moment to just sit back and smell the roses.  It’ll do you the world of good.

.

Even if you’re not due a proper break, promise me you’ll just spend an hour or so at the back end of this busy week curled up with a good book, cuddling your other half,  wandering aimlessly round the shops like you did as a teenager, playing with your cat, flipping through a glossy mag or watching reruns of Downton Abbey.  Whatever floats your boat.  Basically, call a time out on real life, wedding planning, the school run, family politics, work stresses or whatever it is that’s getting you down.  And breathe.

.

I had a lovely (and much needed) break this week with my hubby in the Lake District (we stayed here – and snuggled up with DVDs in bed while the wind and rain lashed outside) to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.  I think it’s the first time that I have been able to take a breath and reflect on just how far this little wedding blog has come in the past year and how much my own life has changed.  I am so very happy, and have YOU to thank for your support.  I hadn’t realised that I had needed a rest so badly, but now my batteries are recharged and I am raring to go!  Good job, as I have come back to an inbox positively swelling with amazing wedding inspiration that I can’t wait to share with you.

.

Talking of deadlines, the Brides Up North Bulletin (a monthly newsletter with all the gossip, giveaways and gorgeousness delivered straight to your inbox) is just about ready for me to press send. If you haven’t subscribed yet, use the black box at top right to do so.  You can also follow the blog on Twitter and Facebook (nearly 4000 others have) for all the news as it happens.

.

As I get to it, check out what is making me happy right now, and send your own happy list to julia@bridesupnorth.co.ukSPREAD IT!

.

This afternoon, it’s back to the Real Wedding fabulousness with a submission from one of my sponsors (and, I am happy to say, new friends), Chloe from White Room Bridal Sheffield.  Chloe’s fabulously stylish winter wedding is full of the glamour and grace that I have come to expect from this lovely lady and as I write this, wrapped up in an old woolly jumper and fluffy slippers, I can’t help but feel a teen tiny twinge of seasonal excitement!  If you are planning a winter wedding, enjoy every moment.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Gary Roebuck

.

Meanwhile, over to Chloe:  We got engaged on 21st March 2008 at The Walnut Club, Sheffield and married on 22nd December 2009 at Great Fosters, Egham, Surrey.

.

We originally were going to get married in Bermuda, on the beach where my father and step-mother live, but then the recession hit and close family and friends were losing their jobs.  Money was so tight that we didn’t want to put pressure upon anyone so we made the decision to have a winter wedding, a 1950’s themed registry office in London followed by a blessing the day after at another venue.  We went to see Great Fosters after seeing it online and hoped to get the Sunday for our blessing. However, when we got there, the Sunday was taken and they only had a Tuesday left.  We walked around, I fell in love so we scrapped all of the above and booked the whole wedding to be there, on Tuesday 22nd December 2009.

.

With it being so close to Christmas, we decided to have an ‘anti Christmas’ colour scheme, so decided on winter elegance rather than Santa’s grotto! The venue would have beautiful trees and decor but we wanted to add glamour to this rather than chintz so went for loads of candles, black vases, real fires and ivory roses. Really simple but really effective.

.

.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Gary Roebuck

.

.

We chose black and champagne as our colour theme, sort of James Bond meets Hollywood glamour as I love Marilyn Monroe and Kieren wanted a sharp black suit! We had ivory flower arrangements with elements of black and some sparkle thrown in too.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Gary Roebuck

.

.

After trying on what felt like hundreds of gowns, I had a top three which to this day I could have married in. I however, finally made the decision that the Jenny Packham gown I tried on at a designer weekend in Sheffield was the one for me. I chose ‘Lida’ which was a beaded gown with straps and a delicate tulle skirt. I paired this with a fake faux shrug and a birdcage veil which I made myself. For the evening, I had a Flo & Percy “Clarice” headband and cuff to take the look from day to night. My love for Jenny Packham was one of the reasons why I wanted to become a stockist of her gowns at White Room Bridal Sheffield and love having her gowns on my racks, such a fan!

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Gary Roebuck

.

.

The bridesmaids wore black satin gowns with a champagne edge from Coast and the best men wore black suits with an ivory tie. We also had two ‘best women’, Kieren’s sisters who wore bespoke ivory gowns with a black sash to mirror the best men!

.

.

We used a small and independent florist in Surrey, Nicola Eve who made me a beautiful bouquet and made all of our wedding party corsages, wrist corsages for the bridesmaids and decorated the tables too.  I had Anemone, Ivory Avalanche Roses with black stems and diamante.

The gorgeousness goes on…

A Wedding Blog Styled Shoot – Winter Bridal Style by Brides Up North

October 10th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

I was recently invited along by the Sunday Sun to act as stylist on a winter bridal fashion shoot at Rockliffe Hall in Darlington.  The edit, plus some advice on winter bridal style courtesy of this was published in the paper yesterday – did you pick up a copy?

.

The team, consisting of Stan and Jane from Stan Seaton PhotographyHooker and Young Darlington, The Rockliffe Hall Spa, Hart Company, Poppy Bridal, Leigh Hetherington and myself worked all day to produce some stunning images.  I share my personal favourites here.  Be inspired!.

The nights may be longer and the wind may be sharper, but tying the knot during the winter is a great fashion choice. The fabrics can be richer and more sumptuous; the colour palette more flattering; there can never be too much sparkle and you can go overboard on fabulous accessories.

For a true snow princess look, think layers of crisp white tulle, big skirts and lace detailing. The gorgeous gowns by Leigh Hetherington are straight out of a fairy tale. You won’t need a lot of colour, but to keep it pretty, add colour contrasts of pale blue and green. This look is all about the drama, so add a full length veil and touches of diamante sparkle to a pale hydrangea bouquet.

If you prefer a sleeker silhouette, chose fluid fabrics like silk and chiffon and go to town on the accessories and detailing. Feathers, pearls and crystals all work well to create a stylish look with a nod to the season. When it comes to winter bridal accessories, more is more. Jenny Packham has created a complimentary line of feathered shrugs , bejewelled hair vines and crystal cuffs that set off her dresses gorgeously (Jenny Packham is available at Poppy Bridal, Darlington).

Bridal Blog Eye Candy: Jenny Packham SS 2012

September 13th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  Nope, I’m not talking back to school or even Christmas.  I’m all about the new bridal collections.

.

I’m off to The British Bridal Exhibition in Harrogate today, to catch up on all the latest trends in wedding gowns, shoes and accessories.  I’m looking forward to a good chinwag with some of my favourite bridal couture designers and experts and I’ll be reporting back here on the wedding blog afterwards.

.

But for now, lets kick the new season off with something kinda ooh!  Ladies, its only the new season collection from Her Majesty Jenny Packham.  Form an orderly queue.  There is plenty of loveliness to go around…
