Real Wedding Recap Winter 2013: You & Me, Always. Jenny Packham Aspen For A Real Wedding At Priory Cottages – Charlotte & Matt

December 19th, 2013 | Julia Braime

Its holiday season here on the blog, and as the team take a break until to rest and recharge for what’s set to be the biggest and best year yet at Brides Up North HQ, we’ll be leaving you with a reduced blogging schedule so that you still get your daily dose of wedding pretty.

Usual service will recommence on 2nd January 2014,  but in the meantime watch out for recaps of our favourite Real Weddings in 2013.  Drop in every day for the very, very prettiest wedding inspiration and if you are a Brides Up North bride, to see if your Real Wedding was one of our top picks.

Richard Wynn Davies

It’s a special one for me today as I’m sharing the wedding of two of my very best friends – Charlotte and Smithy (known formally as Matthew, Mathlete or whatever Charlotte feels like calling him).  Sod the leftover baby-weight, I was honoured to be a bridesmaid at Charlotte and Matt’s amazing, sun dapped celebration at the stunning Priory Cottages in Wetherby.

A woman who knows her own mind, Charlotte’s wedding was never going to be the same as everyone else’s.  Matt proposed on a group ski trip February 2012 and after all the excitement had died down, Charlotte looked me in the eye over a cafe au chocolat, and asked me to be her bridesmaid, adding:

“I’m going to ask all the guys to wear coloured chinos, and I want everyone in featherhead dresses and a rainbow cake”.  This was going to get interesting…

Budget summits – “Jules, persuade Matt that I need the Jimmy Choos, he listens to you” (she got them, he does) – dress dramas – a thousand “talking it over” cocktails and  a million Pinterest pins later, the wedding day arrived.  And I have to tell you, it was one of the most beautiful days that I have ever seen.  From a professional wedding blogger, that’s saying something.  The brand new Mrs Smith isn’t just a pretty face!

Charlotte says:  Matt asked me to marry him in February 2012, in an igloo in Mayerhofern whilst skiing for Jules’ 30th!  We tied the knot on 6th July 2013 at our local church, Saint Mary’s of Stainburn then reception was at Priory Cottages, Wetherby.

Originally we wanted to wed in the South of France. The venue looks like it could be in the South of France; It is gorgeous, it is a blank canvas (you don’t have to follow rules e.g what you have to drink, what the room will look like – rules which sometimes hotels impose) and you can exercise your creativity as you please. I wanted our wedding to be unique and creative, and we felt it the venue was perfect for this.

Serena, the venue manager is amazing… I think that’s the only word for her.

We asked our guests to wear loud and colourful chinos – we wanted the photos to look colourful, a little crazy and be lots of fun. In the evening I asked people to bring masks… for our own masquerade ball.  We wanted to keep to tradition but shake it up a touch.

Our colour theme was colourful (!) and we went with nude/ pale pink colours, for bridesmaids. We then added bold colour in the marquee with duck egg blue and turquoise.

My flowers were bright pastel colours, as was our cake. I didn’t stick to a specific scheme as such, I just tried to use complementing colours, and colours that worked well with skin tones and together.

I fell in love with the Jenny Packham Aspen, the moment I saw it. It was the second dress I tried on.  After weeks trying on many other dresses, it confirmed that Aspen was for me!  The dress was stunning, comfy, and light, just what you need on a hot summers day.  I was very conscious of not feeling too hot, or restricted. And, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t corseted so I could eat as much delicious canapés, plated BBQ and fish & chips!

I then chose a gorgeous sparkly pair of Jimmy Choos – I worked on the basis that I can wear a fabulous pair of shoes again and again; this is better than spending a smaller amount on a pair that will only get used once. Pounds per wear!

I wore my grandma’s grandma’s silver clasp bracelet. It was my ‘something old’ and made my outfit really special.

I then added a long veil, with crystals which was sparkly in a subtle way and I had a pearl hair slide hand made by a designer in Yorkshire.

Richard Wynn Davies

The bridesmaids wore wrap dressed by Eliza and Ethan at Pookie, Harrogate. The girls had gypsophila in their hair and wore nude shoes of their choice.

Our groomsmen wore specially commissioned bow ties, Paul Smith style in pink floral, suits from Marks & Spencer & brightly coloured braces (the brighter the better- of their choice).

We travelled by vintage Rolls Royce. My mum also had a vintage Daimler, and the bridesmaid travelled in a vintage VW Campervan.

The whole day was amazing, from getting ready, to the church, throwing confetti, the food, the dancing… I would have to say one of my favourite memories was arriving at the reception, following the church and seeing everyone in the courtyard waiting to greet us!

The driver sounded his horn, and everyone cheered and waved. The colours were spectacular, we were handed our blue cocktails, and we could hear the steel band playing.

We had a BBQ and the summer Olympics (sports day) the night before the wedding.  This was great fun and was a chance to catch up with guests ahead of the wedding. This was a great tactic!

Richard Wynn Davies

We made our own cake- well Matt and my grandmas made the cakes! I chose a traditional fruit cake. It was decorated by a family friend, and was going to have white chocolate truffles on the side in pastel colours. However, because the weather was so hot, we had to change the truffles last minute to icing! The cake also leaned a touch!

Richard Wynn Davies

The wedding party spent hours tying 100 lanterns to the marquee roof with ribbons, and tied ribbons to the chairs. More hands make light work, and I think we did a great job!

Richard Wynn Davies

Richard Wynn Davies

I had to ensure we had fabulous food and drink all day. This was the most important thing for me- great food.  We used MCK Catering.

We had a plated BBQ of fillet steak, lamb and prawns, with sauté potatoes for our wedding breakfast. Friends of Ham, Leeds supplied the beer. We chose a Yorkshire white wine, which was delicious- Lethenthorpe.

Later on in the evening, we wanted people to have traditional beer munchies- fish & chips with a twist. (tapas with lime and chilli batter).

Richard Wynn Davies

Our wedding favours were bags filled with a coin, a teddy bear, a piece of string, a marble a rubber and a heart. Inside was a special message relating to the reasoning behind why the object was included e.g.:- ‘a marble, because we all seem to have lost ours’ ‘a piece of string to bind us together wherever we are in the world.’ The cost of the wedding favours went to a school in Ghana.

Richard Wynn Davies

We chose a string quartet for the church, a Caribbean Steel Drum band for the reception, and for the evening we had a band.

We honeymooned in the south of France (I secretly wish I was French!)

We stayed at the Hotel Crillon Le Brave in Provence (stunning) saw the Tour de France Stage at Mont Ventoux, visited lavender fields, went horseback riding and then drove in a sports car to the Fairmont in Monte Carlos, via St Tropez, Cannes and Antibes. We chilled out & drank cocktails and hit the Casino of course! We then took the helicopter back to Nice airport.

Fantastic trip; can we do it again?

Richard Wynn Davies

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be don’t be afraid to break the mould and try non- conventional ideas. People will raise eyebrows, but be true to yourself, do what you want to do. You’re a unique individual couple, so be creative!

Richard Wynn Davies

Congratulations Charlotte & Matt!

East Goes West. Jenny Packham For A Welsh/ Indian Real Wedding In North Wales – Nina & Keith

August 28th, 2013 | Julia Braime

JAY Photographic Images

Today we join Nina and Keith in North Wales for a wedding marrying two very different cultures.  Keeping an extended family happy can be tough, but this couple manage to pull off a unique and very special celebration with style and grace (and fabulous fashions).

With images by JAY Photographic Images.

JAY Photographic Images

Nina says:  We got engaged at the Yorkshire Dales Falconry Centre on the 21st May 2012. I was taken by complete surprise as I wasn’t expecting a proposal that day. Keith had organised with the staff for the ring to be attached to a barn owls foot. The owl flew down and landed on my glove and Keith took the ring and went down on one knee. It was the best surprise ever!

We were married on 1st June 2013 and the wedding was in North Wales. As it was a mixed Indian/Welsh wedding we had the civil ceremony at Mold Registry Office and the Hindu ceremony at Keith’s parent’s house in the garden in Hendre.

Patent Red: A Real Wedding In The North West – Lucy & Nick

April 5th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Editor’s note: Due to spikes in traffic, we have been experiencing some delays with our server over the past few days.  It turns out that you can be too popular for your own good!  Be rest assured our web team are working hard behind the scenes to restore super quick speeds.  Please bear with us!

.

Well, when I saw today’s bride Lucy’s choice of shoes (patent red Jimmy Choo Mary Janes people!) I just knew that the rest of her wedding to Nick at Combermere Abbey in Cheshire was bound to be very fabulous indeed.

.

With images by Yana Photography, I wasn’t disappointed!  This is a very beautiful way to finish off the week.

Lucy says:  We got engaged in Cornwall during a weekend away. Nick proposed on top of a cliff overlooking the sea one evening at sunset. We then went back to the cottage where we were staying and celebrated with champagne he had waiting.

.

.

Yana Photography at Combermere Abbey

.

We were married on 8th September 2012 at Combermere Abbey, Cheshire.  Combermere has beautiful walled gardens and a stunning glasshouse for the ceremony which opens out on to a fruit maze. The reception was held in a lovely permanent marquee they have in another part of the walled gardens. Nowhere else we looked around compared to Combermere. The gardens are fabulous and we were lucky as the weather was perfect on the day which added to the relaxed atmosphere.

We didn’t have a theme. I like simplicity so nothing too fussy or wedding(y)!  We chose a colour scheme of black and white with a splash of red for colour – again to keep things classic and clean.

I wore a Maggie Sottero gown from a boutique in Chester. I picked it as it was different to anything else I had seen before and the fit was perfect.  My shoes were from Jimmy Choo. I originally went in to buy from their bridal collection but after seeing these striking red shoes I knew they were the ones for me. I also wore them a lot when we went for dinner on our honeymoon.

.

A bouquet of red roses which were so beautiful I didn’t want to put them down.

.

My bridesmaids wore dresses from Coast. I don’t like traditional bridesmaids dresses so I picked dresses that I thought were smart but also really suited the girls.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to put together a detailed running order for the day a few months prior to the wedding so that you can identify where there might be any lulls and you can fill these gaps with entertainment – this will also ensure your day flows really well. For example to avoid a lull after dinner our casino kicked started the evening for guests and got everyone out of their seats and talking.

Congratulations Lucy and Nick!

Golden Bubbles! A Real Marquee Wedding In The North West – Vanessa & Dan

October 3rd, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

I think it’s high time for another beautiful Real Wedding, don’t you?  Thought so.

.

And this one is a cracker.

.

.

Marquee Wedding by Anna Louise Crossley

.

.

This afternoon’s feature, sent to me by Anna Louise Crossley and real bride Vanessa, is jam packed with sensational details.  Super stylish Vanessa and Dan chose a classic colour scheme with dashes of lace and lashings of champagne for their love and laughter filled marquee wedding.

.

This is one wedding that I would love to have been invited to.  Vanessa, will you be my friend?

Vanessa says: Dan asked me to marry him at home in May 2011 and we were married on 26th August 2012 at St Michaels church in Dalton, Wigan and then the reception in a Marquee in Dan’s parents garden which is also in Dalton.

.

.

Anna Louise Crossley

.

.

Dan’s parents have an amazing garden and we thought a marquee would work for us as we could have the day exactly how we wanted it without any restrictions. Also, we only decided to get married in January 2012 so most of the venues we looked at were already booked for 2012 weddings.  We opted for a mainly black and ivory colour scheme.

I had a lace Elie Saab dress from Eternity Bridal in Warrington. They are amazing and I would recommend them to anybody.  I finished the look off with a pair of gold Jimmy Choo heels.  I carried a bunch of cream roses, which Dan’s mum made.

.

The guys wore morning suits from The Bride & Groom in Preston and my bridesmaids were in floor length black lace.

She’s A Star! A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Steph & Nathan

May 11th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

A Real Wedding In Yorkshire by Agan Photography

.

.

For me, Friday has always been a day of celebration – the end of the working week, the start of the weekend, a few cheeky drinks, a long lunch and a sneaky Crunchie.  Totally floats my boat.

.

What better way to get the Friday feelings flowing than with a simply stunning real wedding sent to me by real bride Steph and Matt of Agan Photography.  This wedding has it all – fashion, fun and food.

.

And oh!  The fashion and the food… swoon.

.

.

A Real Wedding In Yorkshire by Agan Photography   A Real Wedding In Yorkshire by Agan Photography

.

.

Over to Steph: We got engaged on 10th August 2009 at Center Parcs Elvedon and were married on 10th September 2011 at The Star Inn, Harome, North Yorkshire.  The venue is filled with a quirky, rustic charm – and made an impression on us as soon as we walked in. The village setting is also lovely – and we already knew the food would be fantastic too, so it was a very easy choice!

We tried to keep everything simple, local and handmade if possible. All the food cooked at The Star is locally sourced and our evening menu was all from local suppliers in our home village (including a homemade wedding cake). The table decorations and favours were all handmade and the confetti was hand-dried petals donated from different friend’s and family’s gardens

I chose to wear Maxime in Azure by Ian Stuart Belle Epoque Collection from Blush in Uppermill. My head dress was by Vivien Sheriff and dyed to match.  I carried a bouquet of roses, calla lilies, gladioli, heather, elderberries, bear grass and lavender by Gerts Flowers in Honley.

.

My bridesmaids wore eggplant gowns by Jim Hjelm from Limelight Occasions in Lepton.

The boys wore suits from Marks and Spencer.

Spread The Love, A Real Wedding – Sarah & Tom

May 31st, 2011 | Julia Braime

Jenny of Jenny & Keith McAvoy Wedding Photographers sent Brides Up North a corker of a Real Wedding to share with you this morning.  What really makes this set of photographs stand out to me as a wedding blogger is the people in them – whether it’s the cheeky children or the excited bride, weddings are first and foremost about people.  The one that you love, and all the ones you hold dear.

If that doesn’t give you a warm fuzzy feeling Brides Up North, I don’t know what will.  Enjoy.
