Now We Are Two! Happy Birthday Brides Up North!

November 16th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

On this day, two looooong years ago, my life changed inexorably.  A couple of clicks of the mouse started a journey that at the time, I would not have though fathomable nor possible.  A journey that was, quite frankly, beyond my wildest dreams.  Brides Up North was born.

.

Brides Up North is Two!

.

.

Only the journey didn’t quite start on 16th November 2010.  I’d discovered blogs (those brilliant pages of escapism) and tinkered with some efforts of my own, all the time in the process of planning my own wedding.  Feeling increasingly frustrated with the constant focus on the South of the country in magazines and online and being surprised to find amazing vendors right on my door step, I toyed with the idea of a wedding blog devoted to brides in the North of the UK, and to the cause of championing the fabulous industry on my doorstep.  I didn’t know it, but in March 2010 as I sketched out plans for a pretty pink and silver site with space for a supplier directory and plenty of screen space for photographs, called my web designer and registered my self employed status, the Northern Revolution was hatching.

.

By Tuesday 16th November 2010, I was basically a construction lawyer (didn’t know about my past life?  catch up here) with a very pretty little secret.

.

The site was designed and I’d been writing (some very mediocre posts that at the time I thought were brilliant – practice makes perfect has never been more evident than in the blogosphere) “in private” for a few months, and was considering a soft launch (basically lifting my privacy settings, how I laugh now!) at the start of December.

.

But then, one HRH William went and asked one Catherine Middleton for her hand in marriage.

.

Suddenly, British weddings were BIG news.

.

That lunchtime, instead of grabbing my usual soup or sandwich, I hot footed it round to my local internet cafe (a blog was not something that work would have encouraged), wrote a quick post celebrating the Royal marriage and lifted my privacy settings.

.

Brides Up North had over 2,000 page hits within the first afternoon of it’s existence.

.

In the right place at the right time, with a huge dash of luck, but before and after that day has been a whole lot of late nights, early mornings, the hugest highs, the lowest lows, sheer determination and so much work.

.

A lot of the brand’s success has been down to the support of my fabulous readers (who I now know, thanks to nifty google analytics) are – as was exactly the idea – very predominantly located in the North of the UK (HELLO YOU LOT!) and the wonderful Northern wedding industry who has embraced me as their own and thrown themselves behind my cause.  I love you all.

.

I was recently updating the information on my profile page, and commented that handing in my notice as a solicitor to concentrate on growing the blog and brand full time was really only the very beginning.  This last year particularly has seen Brides Up North expand so rapidly (page hits are up 100% (100%!) from this time last year and I have hosted  ten (ten!) record attendance inaugural bridal events and six (six!) sold out wedding industry networking events since then) and I now wear the hat of full time editor, figurehead, brand manager, event organiser, freelance writer, public speaker, employer and chief operating officer. It’s been a crazy ride – hard, hard work – and I have a feeling that we are just getting started…

.

You can read my recap on our first year here, or catch up in full over on the about page, but in the last year, this is what Brides Up North has been up too (a bit, then).

.

In November 2011, one year since it’s launch, Brides Up North was officially registered as a trademark, profiled in a cover story two page spread Blogging It! in wedding industry bible Bridal Buyer Magazine, contributed to a feature on top UK Wedding Blogs 20 Amazing Ideas Blogged in Wedding Ideas Magazine, featured a Don’t Tell The Bride Real Wedding and of course, celebrated it’s first birthday with loads of cake!

.

December 2011 saw features in The Times, a double page feature in Wedding Ideas Magazine and a double page fashion trends feature in Pure Weddings Magazine. Julia was also invited to judge the Best Retailer Website Award for the prestigious Bridal Buyer Awards in 2012. To top off a Merry Christmas, Brides Up North was recognised as the best blog for Northern Brides by Channel 4 Beauty.

.

In January 2012 Brides Up North was proud to attend the inaugural Wedding Industry Awards as a regional judge. Brides Up North was also nominated in the Best Wedding Directory category for The Bridal Magazine Awards 2012 and asked to contribute to Bridal Buyer Europe.

.

In February 2012 the first Brides Up North Wedding Exclusives in Yorkshire took place – with a sell out on exhibitor spaces and a record attendance at both venues. Julia addressed The UK Alliance of Wedding Planners in a special “Blogging For Business” seminar and also spoke at both the Forward Ladies’ Positive Womens’ Days in Runcorn and Leeds. Brides Up North also featured in Hitched Magazine and The Journal.

.

In March 2012, Julia hosted the first Brides Up North Super Showcase grand wedding exhibition in the North East (again a sell out on exhibitor space and another record turn out!) and was invited to join National glossy Wedding Magazine as a regular columnist. Julia also took part in and completed the Ski The World Challenge with Wedding Ideas Magazine for The Make A Wish Foundation.

.

In April 2012, the final two Brides Up North Wedding Exclusives in Yorkshire were another huge success, again complete sell outs and record attendances for the venues, Nostell Priory and Sarah Beeny’s Rise Hall. Julia was also invited to be the guest speaker at the North West Wedding Vendors Party with Caroline Castigliano.

.

In May 2012 Brides Up North reprised the successful Tweet Up wedding industry networking events with a sell out party in the North East (click here to see a video from the event). Julia was also invited to be headline sponsor and presenter at the North of England Wedding Awards to take place later in 2012, and re-invited to sit as a consultant judge for The Wedding Industry Awards 2013.

.

In June 2012 Brides Up North hosted two more sell out Tweet Ups in Yorkshire and the North West and Julia took part in a press trip to Cyprus with Brides Up North Featured Supplier Thomson Weddings on behalf of both Brides Up North and Wedding Ideas Magazine.

.

In July 2012 Julia saw her first monthly column published in National glossy Wedding Magazine, all about the trend for All White Weddings. Brides Up North also had a column in Mosaic Brides Magazine and was interviewed and took part in a photo shoot for Fabulous Magazine about the origins of Brides Up North and the rapidly growing brand.

.

In August 2012 Brides Up North had triple page features printed in regional glossies LovedUp Magazine and Darlington Weddings and Julia began to put the finishing touches to plans for a busy Autumn season ahead.

.

In September 2012 Brides Up North hosted three more record attendance bridal events – the Brides Up North Wedding Exclusives at Nostell Priory and Allerton Castle in Yorkshire, and the Brides Up North Super Showcase in the North East – beating even their own record footfalls in Spring 2012. Julia also hosted and presented two industry gala dinner awards ceremonies celebrating the winners and finalists in the inaugural North of England Wedding Awards. Brides Up North also saw another column printed in National glossy Wedding Magazine focussing on modern glamour for grooms.

.

In October 2012 Julia was invited to sit on the judging panel for the prestigious Wedding Ideas Magazine Awards 2012 and hosted two more record attendance Wedding Exclusives at The Mansion and Sarah Beeny’s Rise Hall. Brides Up North also announced plans for brand new bridal event venues in Spring 2012 and a very exciting collaboration with Manchester Fashion Week 2013 (MCRFW 2013). More news soon!

.

Happy Birthday Brides Up North!

.

I have high hopes for the continued growth and expansion of Brides Up North in 2013, with a huge Brides Up North Christmas Party, just a few more exciting bridal events in new areas, better blog content, a burgeoning Featured Supplier directory, more industry events, a brand new full time member of staff (Hello Kate!) and a few surprises too.  Not least a Brides Up North baby!  It’s going to be interesting!

.

What would be my blog birthday wishes?  Another exciting year in business like last one, but even better (aim high!).  More blog comments from my lovely readers… this is your cue to chip in on the discussion here as well as over on Facebook and Twitter (where there is no holding you back!), health and happiness for my family and friends and an easy labour. Please.

.

So happy second birthday to Brides Up North, the Northern Revolution and all those who support it!  I hope that your Friday is filled with good cheer, and can’t wait to see what the next 12 months will bring…

.

And with that, I’m having the rest of the day off (again, in my wildest dreams!).

It’s been a while since we delved behind the scenes here at , so I thought that a catch up post was well overdue.  There have been quite a few ‘developments’ here at Brides Up North HQ over the past few months… not least a sell out season of super successful Brides Up North wedding exhibitions, becoming the host of the inaugural North of England Wedding Awards, adding new talent to the team in the form of a brand new regular guest blogger and a full time member of support staff (hello Kate!), more fabulous Featured Suppliers joining the Northern Revolution and swelling our ranks, many meetings about brand new Brides Up North projects in 2013 and some very exciting new venues for some huge wedding shows next year.  All whilst maintaining and (I think) improving upon our daily schedule of twice a day wedding inspiration, features and a real variety of stunning Real Weddings.  Oh, and a growing baby bump

.

It’s been one helluva ride!

.

As you do, I tend to take pictures of the *fun stuff* rather than the hours days spent hunched over VAT returns, contracts and spread sheets, but that’s what a wedding blog is all about isn’t it?  The fun stuff… and as it would appear, the use of a great under eye concealer to mask all those very late nights and almost as early mornings that go into making a growing business a success.

.

I’m also pleased to report that whilst all this has been going on, our exhibition attendances and blog hits have been reaching new record highs (that’s what it’s all about after all!) and that Brides Up North is happily sitting right up there at the very top of the charts with the other top wedding blog names for Great Britain popularity rankings on Alexa.com. The Northern Revolution is in full swing!

.

When I look back at how much fun it’s been, how much this brand has achieved and where I hope I can take it in 2013, it’s all worth it!  Some exciting times are coming up…

.

I hope you enjoy this peek into my World!

Before we look forward, lets take a moment to look back.  Just before Christmas, I sent out  a special edition of my monthly newsletter to all my wedding blog subscribers, charting what has been a really excellent year for Brides Up North and the Northern wedding industry in general.

.

It’s been fabulous, and I have each and every one of you to thank for that, so whilst we forge ahead with another year shouting about Northern talent, I thought it might be nice to reflect on how far the Northern Revolution has come in 2011, so I have decided to share the content of that bulletin on these pages too.

.

This blog post is dedicated to you, my amazing loyal readership and my wonderful wedding industry friends.  None of this would be possible without you… after all, I just write it down…

The blog celebrated it’s first birthday in November and I can’t quite believe how much the Brides Up North brand has grown in the past year and a bit.  Thank you to each and every one of you for all your friendship, love and support.

.

In November 2010 Brides Up North was born and went live just as Royal Engagement fever hit the airwaves.  Talk about being in the right place at the right time!  Thanks to Kate and Wills, everyone in the UK was wedding hungry and the site launched to almost overnight success.

.

In December 2010 Brides Up North began to shout about all the fabulous Northern bridal talent that is out there – and yours for the choosing.  The ranks of Brides Up North Featured Suppliers began to swell as more regional bridal businesses made it into the pages of the directory

In January 2011 it was all about me – as well as featuring my own Real Wedding on the site, me and the hubby appeared in an article on The Times’ Wedding Page, and my article An Honest Bride was featured in the Autumn/ Winter edition of Belle Bridal Magazine, a North East title.

.

February 2011 saw a follow up article in Belle Bridal – An Honest Wife – alongside more coverage of our own Real Wedding, plus I posed for a Trash The Dress shoot on Bamburgh beach.

.

.

In March 2011 Brides Up North was "Hitched" and the blog was profiled in the same magazine alongside Love My Dress – Meet The Brides Who Blog.

.

In April 2011 It was a month of Cool Britannia! Brides Up North ran a month of giveaways to celebrate the Royal Wedding, including the chance to win a Mia Sposa Wedding Dress worth £1,200, took part in a very special Rock The Royal Wedding photo shoot and contributed to an article in The Daily Mirror: Marry Like A Princess, Pay For It Like A Pauper.

.

In May 2011 and June 2011 the seed of the idea for the inaugural set of Brides Up North Tweet Ups was planted.  An invitation to what I imagined would be a tiny get together at my local pub got 250+ overnight responses and soon became a series of three regional networking events, scheduled for August and September.

In July 2011 Brides Up North had it’s first Expert Advice column in Wedding Ideas Magazine, was invited to become an Associate Contributor to Hitched Magazine and Wedding Ideas Magazine lent their support and became official sponsor of the Brides Up North Tweet Ups.

In August 2011  I hosted the first ever Brides Up North Tweet Up North West and handed in my notice as a lawyer to concentrate on the blog and brand full time.  Brides Up North was also crowned Blog Of The Week on the Wedding Magazine website, produced a Guest Edit for Wedding Magazine online and launched a regular column in Hitched Magazine: Rock The Dress With Brides Up North.  I also styled and modelled in a bridal fashion shoot featuring a collective of North East wedding suppliers which later featured in The Evening Chronicle – Glamorous Brides Go Vintage – and was profiled as Champion Of North Brides in the same title.

In September 2011, Brides Up North was officially on tour at exhibitions across the North as a guest of Wedding Pages, The Wedding Affair and The UK Wedding Shows, amongst others.  To celebrate, the blog launched an amazing competition to win your wedding dress with The Harrogate Wedding Lounge.  Two more regional Brides Up North Tweet Ups in Yorkshire and the North East followed.  Not quite ready to pack up my party dress, I unveiled plans for some branded Brides Up North Wedding Showcase events in Spring 2011.

In October 2011, Brides Up North was invited to be a regional judge in The 2012 Wedding Industry Awards, presented to the Forward Ladies on Blogging For Business at their Positive Women’s Day, appeared in Wedding Ideas Magazine with an Expert Advice tips column Wow Factor Weddings For Less, The Times Online as a contributor to the article Will we ever get sick of a Vintage Wedding? and styled a Winter Bridal fashion shoot for the Sunday Sun.

.

There was no easing into Christmas gently, as the blog was busier than ever last month.  December 2011 saw features in Wedding Ideas Magazine, Pure Weddings and The Times and Brides Up North was been invited to judge the Best Retailer Website Award for the prestigious Bridal Buyer Awards.  Brides Up North was also recognised as the best blog for Northern Brides by Channel 4 Beauty!

What A Do! Supplier Showcase: What A Do Weddings

August 16th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Today on the wedding blog I have the pleasure of introducing a fabulous North East wedding stationery (and other wonderful stuff) designer that I have been working with recently.  Her name is Helen, of What A Do Weddings and her fabulous designs need no other introduction.  She is a real artist and her services should be snapped right up!

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: What A Do Weddings

.

.

How and why did What A Do Weddings begin?

.

I’ve designed wedding stationery for years as part of my job as a graphic designer. I’ve often thought why are no graphic designers offering couples this service? The kind of agency service you would expect for any other type of design, where you discuss what the client is looking for, propose a few concepts and work with them to visualise something they love.  So while on maternity leave this year I stopped wondering and started doing. I chose the name ‘What A Do’ to reflect the amazing weddings I’d be inviting people to through my designs. I get excited when I receive a quality invitation (not very often).  I believe it sets the standard or feeling for what’s to come and adds to the excitement and build up to the event. I have designed many invitations for birthdays also and corporate and charity events so the grand plan was to have mini-sites for What A Do Parties and What A Do Events.

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: What A Do Weddings

.

.

Are you married? Did you make the invitations for your own wedding day?

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: What A Do Weddings

.

.

I’ve been married 6 years, and designed my own stationery. I look back on it with fond memories: it was and still is very personal to me. I couldn’t help but brand my day, something I now like to do for others. Having that little touch that reminds you of the event you are at or have been to is one of the things that makes it unique.

.

.

.

.

.

.

What designs are available to order?

.

My website showcases bespoke designs (some of which could be used or tweaked for others) as well as some more generic designs which are not venue or couple specific. Any of these are available to order and not just as you see them. I work to various sizes and formats such as pocket, boxed and greeting card format, and am happy to alter designs, and obviously change them to suit any colour scheme. The designs so far cover vintage, damask, floral, swirls, ornate and illustrative.

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: What A Do Weddings

.

.

Can you do bespoke designs?

.

This is my strength and I believe what sets me apart from other stationers. I love to design, and the nature of design is to create something visual from a discussion – something new. I relish a new challenge or request and would only ever turn it down if I did not think I could make it look good. My bespoke designs to date include the following…

.

Lumley Castle

.

I photographed the interior and picked up a heart shape in a fireplace which was repeated into a frame with the couples name inside.

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: What A Do Weddings

.

.

Gibside Chapel

.

Two designs: one features the unique rose ceiling inside the chapel, the other a more obvious photograph of the Chapel but still stunning and one of my favourites.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Beamish Hall

.

A friendly illustration style of the Hall itself.

.

.

.

.

And my biggest challenge to date – a Sunderland fan getting wed to a penguin fan!

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: What A Do Weddings

.

.

What is your favourite design and why?

.

Can’t help but love vintage. My favourite design is my French vintage invitation. Unfortunately this was not for a real wedding but for a photographer who wanted to feature a French vintage invitation in her new book. I’d love someone to use it though – calling all brides to be! I have another vintage style with torn edges. I love this too.

.

.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

.

Absolutely everywhere. I take pictures of all sorts. I love typography and will always snap any old signage, textures to use in designs, anything ornate, architecture and landscapes. I also love doodles particularly children’s doodles as they have a unique way of simplifying things. I am passionate about art particularly print making. I screen print and have bought an Adana machine to eventually create letterpress stationery with. I like to attend and take part in local art exhibitions. I own a couple of original antique letterpress posters and have a collection of Victorian labels which are going to allow me to develop this style into invitations. Music, quotations, eclectic styles, design, the list goes on.

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: What A Do Weddings

.

.

What products are available in each design?

.

Where does it stop? Obviously the usual suspects, rsvp’s, place cards, table plans, menus, save the date, evening invitations, thank you cards etc. but I also do wedding websites, kids colouring packs (venue or couple specific), hen do t-shirts (I have even done posters for a large hen do), save the date magnets or bookmarks. Whatever a customer may ask for I’d like to think I will have a way of doing it. I welcome any new ideas. Couples can have the original illustrations (if this is their stationery design) framed and kept as a keepsake also.

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: What A Do Weddings

.

.

Who would be your dream client, and what sort of design would you envisage for them?

.

Any bride to be who wants something different, even slightly whacky or arty. Now I’ve said this I don’t know if any fall into this category, but I’d love to push the boundaries, do something new and wow. If I had to put it on a personality I’d say Gwen Stefani (even though already married). I’d reflect her style and personality with something bold and arty. Love the fact her husband is Gavin Rossdale so would want to mix the rock style in too.

.

I also love a themed wedding. Anything special to that particular couple that they can translate into a style across their whole event. Retro, garden, childhood sweethearts theme or anything that is new, something different that I haven’t done or seen before.

Does all the stationery have to match?

.

It should work as a set. There should be a common element whether it be a font, paper type, colour scheme, but other than that it is nice to have a little variation. I usually push the colour scheme as far as I can before it looks too different, so if you are using 2 or 3 colours I’d try and use all of these colours as a solid background on different items, not just apply one colour background, one colour text etc. but I always discuss this with the couple as I work. This is my way of working as a designer, other stationers will have different ideas.

.

Where are you based and where can you supply?

.

I am based in Durham but see no reason at all why I can’t work for anyone anywhere. I finished a job for a couple earlier in the year from London. I never spoke with them or met them it was all done on email and through the post. The surprising thing is I felt like I got to know the bride much better than most with our long late emails to each other. I find every couple I’ve worked for different and I am very much led by how they wish to work.

Tell us about other products?

.

I am planning lots of other products targeted at the gift side of weddings. I already sell ‘bride to be’ bags, kids colouring packs and personalised mounts. I hope to extend this into a range of fabric gifts for weddings such as personalised children’s bags (various styles and sizes), as well as personalised Mr & Mrs Aprons, tea towels, hen do t-shirts and a lot more. Wedding congratulations cards and personalised memory boxes are other ideas. Very early days on these but I’d love to hear any thoughts not just from couples but anyone in the industry. Something else I’d like to build on is work for and with other wedding suppliers and venues. It could be a unique set of stationery, a dedicated wedding website, kids colouring packs with illustrations of your venue, or promotional materials such as flyers and banners.

What are your prices, are you doing any special offers?

.

My prices are good! I use quality papers and often do bespoke designs at no extra charge. Invitations start at £1.50. I offer 10% discount on orders over £400. If you mention and order before November 2011, you can choose from 10 free kids colouring packs or a free mounted memory (mount with your wedding details and names on for you to ask guests to sign or keep and put your own photos in – details on request).

.

.

How long do you take to turn around an order?

.

If you request a design I already have and you send a swatch through for me to colour match, I will have a sample to you within 10 days and following your approval can deliver an average order 3 weeks later. If you are looking for a new design I prefer 3 weeks to get the initial proof to you, but if further amends are to be made it can become impossible to put a time on it as all new designs are different. I can prioritise an order if needed, however your wedding stationery is something that should not be rushed.

.

How can I get in touch to discuss my requirements or place an order?

.

The best way to contact me is by email (helen@whatadoweddings.co.uk ) or phone (07545 216339). If you have any ideas and images of things you like it is best to put these all onto an email and send it across for me to digest and come back with my thoughts. I have a website (www.whatadoweddings.co.uk ), facebook page and I am always on twitter (@whatadoweddings).

I’m a visual person so when I cast my eye over the for the first time I was instantly sucked in by the amazing photography. Julia has an eye for showcasing the best and as I looked closer through the images I was pulled in deeper by the ideas, dress, decoration, accessories, venues and overall detail which make these shots and weddings so stunning. I will never tire of the content because lets face it us gals love a wedding, but admire the way the content is constantly changing and yet always such a high standard. It is a must not only for brides to be but suppliers looking to be the best at what they do also.

What is the future for What A Do Weddings?

.

Possibly premises, definitely letterpress stationery. More collaboration with event planners, products into shops and boutiques, online shop, wedding gift range including congratulations cards and fabric gifts, lots of happy customers, new wedding industry friends and colleagues, get into wedding magazines and blogs, make a bit of money. Am I aiming to high?!

Delicious Details: The Brides Up North Tweet Up North West…And What The Twitteratti Said…

August 8th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Last night’s first ever Brides Up North Tweet Up North West with Wedding Ideas Magazine was, I’m relieved to say, a resounding success.

.

The pre-registration list for the next North West event is, unbelievably, already starting to fill!  If you want to come along, get your name down!

.

Thank you so so much to everyone who came along to support the event and packed out the beautiful host venue, Didsbury House Hotel (scroll down to this morning’s post to see their Dream Venue interview), and to my fabulous support team: All Wrapped Up Events, The Didsbury Flower Lounge, What A Do Weddings, The English Rose Bakery, Love Gets Sweeter Wedding Films and last but not least, Jenny & Keith McAvoy Wedding Photographers

.

A full round up of the night is coming up later on the week (once I have had a chance to draw breath) but in the meantime, here is a sneak peek at some of the delicious styling details (be inspired, these looks are easy to create for your own sugar spun wedding or celebration!) and what just some of the Twitteratti had to say about it!
