The Editorials: Maids In Heaven In Wedding Magazine

May 14th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

The Editorials is a series bringing the offline bridal freelance writing that I do on a monthly basis for numerous glossy magazines (both National and regional) online.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog in Wedding Magazine

.

.

Although the blog has been whirring away as usual these last eight weeks, with a small baby it’s harder to get to the shops – so my lovely friends at Wedding Magazine have just sent me a job lot of glossies to catch up on.  Today, we visit their April/ May issue, and my column about keeping your team on side.  After all, you want some friends at the end of it all, don’tcha?

.

I wrote: These days, bridesmaid duty doesn’t have to equal sartorial disaster. There are plenty of options out there for dressing your best girls and still staying friends at the end of it all. Not a hoop skirt or Little Bo Peep impersonator in sight, unless you are being intentionally ironic!

.

Whilst a strong vintage, alternative or high glamour focus might demand a certain look, there’s nothing worse than overstepping the mark between theming and fancy dress. Once you’ve chosen your own dress, the best bet is a set of bridesmaid frocks that will flatter and contrast with your own styling and suit your chosen venue. And when it comes to adhering to a chosen dress code, the bridal party always should lead by example.

.

Consider your wedding day colour choices and inspirations carefully, but don’t feel that every collar and cuff has to match. Think about what will look best in your wedding photographs: bridesmaids’ should help to create a beautiful background to show off their leading lady. Try offsetting an all-white palette with deeper tones in the Winter, choose all over florals for a fresh and contrasting Spring time look or complimentary rosy hues for warmer weather.

.

.

.

You First

.

Pick your own gown first. You might be dead set on a certain style, but tastes are often known to change once shopping starts. That way, you can be sure that your style selections will enhance the overall look. A sash of lace around a bridesmaid’s waist can set off a matching wedding dress beautifully.

Maids To Measure

.

Would It Work For You?

.

Be fair. If you wouldn’t be seen dead in it, why should your best mate? Do show some consideration of their shape, size and usual style. Do they all have to wear exactly the same? Equally, remember that your guests do know you, and how tall you are. Forcing your girls into unflattering flats or sky high heels when they would rather be wearing the opposite is just cruel, and discourages dancing. That’s never a good thing.

.

.

.

Shop Around

.

Don’t feel pressured to buy for your bridesmaids in the same boutique as your wedding gown. Whilst this can be advantageous in terms of ease and pricing, there is no need to narrow your options if you want to look elsewhere. Gems can be found in independent fashion boutiques, online, via the big name bridal houses and never, ever rule out the Great British High Street.

Dare To Be Different

.

Just because everyone is working rainbow brights, contrasting cuts or pastel pales doesn’t mean that you have to. My favourite bridesmaid styles this year have all been in elegant tones and classic shapes with a quirky twist. Don’t shy away from unexpected colours or a bit of embellishment. After all, everyone loves to sparkle.

Lunch With Caroline: A Castigliano Designer Day At Lace Bridal

December 20th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

.

.

Life as a is actually a little different than I expected to be.  High level event planning, a busy blog and feature writing schedule, looking after sponsors and exhibitors and all that lovely admin that comes with running a business on a daily basis is time consuming stuff.  Rather than floating around on a cloud of tulle attending long lunches with fabulous people (yes, I did think self employment might be a bit like that) a lot of my days are spent putting in 12 hour shifts in a messy office, albeit a messy office overflowing with pretty wedding bits.  It’s not a tough life, granted, but it’s a busy one.

.

Once in a while though, a day comes along that is exactly what I thought a full time life as a professional wedding blogger would be (clouds of tulle, long lunches and all), and then all that hard work is so worth it.

.

.

.

.

Step forward the lovely Katie and Lesley of Lace Bridal, Ailish at Keep Calm & Marry On, fabulous photographers Katy Lunsford and Martin Hambleton, Craig at Unforgettable Memories, assorted bridal press, one Caroline Castigliano (wedding dress designer to the stars) and celebrity chef Simon Rimmer.

.

.

Caroline Castigliano at Lace Bridal by Katy Lunsford Photography

.

.

I was very privileged to be the only wedding blogger invited to the launch of the Caroline Castigliano 2013 collection at the gorgeous Lace Bridal in Hale, Cheshire, followed by a private lunch with just the designer, the Lace Team and the talented Simon Rimmer at his beautiful eatery Earle – handily right next door!

.

.

An afternoon of to-die-for dresses was followed by a gorgeous gossip over a fantastic three course spread.  Trust me, if the Lace ladies look after their brides as well as they looked after me – and I very much suspect that they do – then you are in very good hands indeed.

.

Here are just a few images and a special film from the day, to give you a sneak peek at Caroline’s beautiful new collection.  Watch out for light and airy full skirts, perfect detailing, delicate lace and the softest flashes of colour.  What we gossiped about over lunch?  I’ll take that to the grave!

Katie, owner at Lace Bridal told me: “We are thrilled to launch the Caroline Castigliano 2013 collection to our brides. They are the most luxurious and incredibly well made gowns – any bride that wears a Castigliano dress is in for a special treat!”

.

Caroline said: “I am delighted that my collection will be available to brides in the North West at Lace Bridal.  My aim is to always make a woman look more beautiful on her wedding day than she ever has done before. I believe in excellent structure to ensure great silhouettes, draped in the softest fabric to create the allure of understated feminine glamour.”

The Caroline Castigliano name is synonymous with understated chic and contemporary designer style.

Castigliano’s signature is a silhouette which is unquestionably feminine and effortlessly elegant. Her unique ability to cut and construct garments enables her to create a gown that is confident and sexy, yet exudes a deep sense of style.

.

Everything about a Castigliano gown is unique – from the exquisite choice of fabric, to the foundation of the gown, which is created using unique corsetry and undergarments techniques.  Each gown is meticulously handcrafted in the UK for a flawless result and the collections are offered bespoke or made to measure.

.

Caroline’s vision is to ensure that when you walk down the aisle in a Caroline Castigliano wedding dress you will feel the most confident you have ever felt in your life.  You will gain this confidence by knowing that you look incredible from every angle. With every step, you will sense the power of the gown; the beauty of its movements; its amazing cut; its total simplicity and undeniable elegance.

It’s Just A Little Blush! A Styled Bridal Shoot From Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

October 31st, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

Anais Lace Headpiece £150

.

Today’s absolutely stunning styled bridal shoot comes to us courtesy of the lovely Nicola at Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe, a fabulous Brides Up North Featured Supplier who is keen (and rightly so!) to share her stunning new blush collection with you.  I’m excited to announce an exclusive Brides Up North discount with Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe coming soon in the New Year, but for now, with images from my lovely friend Katy Lunsford Photography, lets enjoy one last moment in the sun, with Nicola’s exquisite, keep-sake bridal designs.

.

Swoon.

.

.

The softest chiffon florals, intricate yet delicate beadwork and romantic sheer edging whisper the arrival of Blush, the third collection from vintage inspired bridal accessories designer, Silver Sixpence in her Shoe.

.

Each beautifully hand-crafted accessory nods to the elegance of decades past and yet is the definition of modern bridal adornment, as much inspired by designer Nicola Wellard’s recent travels in Europe and beyond as they are by the romance of a bygone era.

Katy Lunsford Photography shot on location in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. The golden sun-dappled images perfectly demonstrate Katy’s instinct for capturing a bride’s beauty in natural light whilst showcasing the most delicate and breath-taking of details in the Silver Sixpence collection.

Nicola says:  My new veil and headpiece collection layers whimsical chiffon and tulles, creating a soft-focus finish to my brides’ look. Added to the antique cream and ivory of my previous collections are blush, antique rose and hints of sepia and gold.

Versatility is a notable aspect of this season’s collection. Alongside the collection’s new finer birdcage veils are a number of pieces designed to work as a headpiece, wrist corsage or waist sash, perfect for the modern bride who wishes to refresh her look throughout the day.

.

Additionally, several of the collections’ headpieces can be worn with a variety of different hairstyles and with or without a veil, providing a solution to a common concern for brides who purchase their accessories before finalising their overall big day look.

Get Crafty! Introducing: Silver Sixpence “Made By You” Home Kits

April 30th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

If you can’t make it to Brides Up North Featured Supplier Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe’s fabulous workshop this week (click here for all the details and how to book) – and what a pity! – then you’ll be wanting to get your hands on a “Made By You” Home Kit.

.

To inspire, here is Nicola’s How to Guide for creating your vintage inspired headpiece at home!

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

Inside your pretty pot:

.

Sinamy round base

Crocodile clip

Selection of vintage fabrics

Russian veiling

Jewels

Buttons

Feathers

Needle & thread

Little note from Silver Sixpence

.

In addition you will need:

.

Scissors

Fabric glue (optional)

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe   Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

Nicola of Silver Sixpence says: My “Made By You” home kits cater for all levels of sewers. From those of you who learnt your tips and tricks from your Nanas to those of you who experience utter frustration when trying to thread a needle, we’ve all been there! Each pretty pot is individually made using an array of vintage fabrics in different colour ways and textures. Each home-kit also contains a selection of hand-picked gems that you can use to glam up your head piece.

.

*Secret Tip*

.

The key to making your headpiece look really professional is to layer your fabrics upon one another to hide any stitching and making sure you sew as tightly as possible, knot off your threads and make sure you trim any loose ends.

.

Step 1

.

Pop open your pot.

.

Step 2

.

Arrange your pretty pieces and think about what you are looking to create.

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

Step 3

.

Position your croc clip on the back of the sinamy base and sew securely in position as demonstrated from front to back of the base, this is so it will be hidden on the inside. Knot securely.

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

Step 4

.

Decorating your design! Here are a few suggestions to help you decide.

.

You can bow or gather your Russian veiling as shown above! This is a really simple but really effective idea!

.

To make a cute bow from your pre-cut fabrics, fold inwards and pinch in the middle and secure by sewing.

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

If your kit contains a spiky goose feather, try curling it to form a pretty shape as demonstrated in the picture and wrap with thread at the base to secure.

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

Another interesting way to play with feathers is to layer them on top of each other, to create a ruffled effect.

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

Step 5

.

Take your pre-made bow and sew this where you feel it looks best, I find they always look best when arranged at an angle.

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

Step 6

.

Buttons/Jewels/Gems – The devil is in the detail!  The next few images show a variation on to use your embellishments. Use them to make your headpiece really personal to you!

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

*Secret Tip*

.

If your kit contains any old vintage earrings where their backs have been removed, you will need to sew through the holes on the back.

.

Step 7

.

*Careful Caution*

.

When decorating your headpiece with tiny headpieces or sequins by really careful when using fabric glue, try using an ear bud to apply.

.

.

Et voila!

.

.

Katy Lunsford Photography for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe

.

.

Apply your favourite lipstick, style your hair and start wearing your “Made By You” headpiece! Don’t forget to post me a pic on my Facebook page, I can’t wait to see what you’ve all created!

.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing the results too! Visit Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe to order your own kit.

Nicola of Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe explains: An accidental gift of a box of old handmade laces and appliqués was the inspiration behind the 2012 collection.

.

Including my signature headpieces, birdcage veils and exquisite garters, this season sees the addition of quirky shoe clips and unique decorated horseshoes. The collection is designed to appeal to the modern bride who wishes to create a perhaps vintage inspired, certainly individual look. Using antique laces and adornments, each piece is handcrafted and one off. The Delilah headband for example has been made using a tiny lace collar lovingly restored and embellished with tiny crystals.

I also offer a bespoke service, and encourage my clients to bring family heirlooms, such as jewellery, to their consultation, allowing me to create something beautiful and entirely unique with a personal emotional attachment for the bride.

It was hard to find accessories that matched the style I wanted for my own wedding day, so I put to use the skills I had learnt throughout my degree in Fashion and Textiles to produce my own unique look. I launched Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe a matter of months later, and the company now supplies brides as far away as Sydney, Australia, with their wedding day accessories!

.

My unusual company name was inspired by the traditional wedding day rhyme, ‘Something old, something new’ which dictates that, for a married life of wealth and happiness, a bride should place a lucky silver sixpence in her left shoe.
