This cosy Christmas Wedding in Yorkshire, sent to me by Lissa Alexandra Photography, is a modern celebration with a real sense of old fashioned elegance and grace.  Add one very cute and smiley bride, a swinging ceilidh and a musical surprise and you have a day that deserves it’s place in the history books.

Let’s hear from Charlotte, the Bride: We got engaged on the Isle of Arran on the west coat of Scotland in September 2010. We got engaged on the rocks of the beach where I used to play as a little girl on her family holidays. The engagement didn’t go entirely to plan though, as we were caught out by the tide and after I had said yes, Tim was forced to carry me through the water to get back to the beach!

We were married on 10 December 2011 at St Mary’s Church in Boston Spa, a small village in Yorkshire where I grew up. Our reception was held at the Merchant Taylor’s Hall in York.

We are both foodies and set about searching for a caterer before the venue, as we wanted to make sure the wedding breakfast was of a high standard. Local firm, Poppy Caterers, were recommended by a friend and we noticed they were the exclusive caterers for the Merchant Taylor’s. After a visit to the hall we knew it’s oldy-worldly style and features would be perfect for a winter wedding; it had the exact romantic and cosy feel we were looking for and we fell in love with it instantly.

Fisherman’s Friend – A Styled Bridal Fashion Shoot By Lissa Alexandra

November 17th, 2011 | Brides Up North Wedding Blog

Something fishy’s going on today on the wedding blog.  But don’t get your tackle in a twist, it’s only the gorgeous Lissa Alexandra Photography with her fabulous seaside bridal fashion shoot.  Man the lifeboats!

.

.

.

.

Let’s hear from Lissa, who explains the concept behind the shoot.  She says: For ages I’ve wanted to do a bridal shoot, but with a twist. It’s very popular for photographers just to plonk a model in a field and shoot but I wanted more depth to mine. As a Yorkshire lass with a love of the sea, the North East coast seemed a perfect location. My style of photography is slightly vintage and I love rural/ traditional locations, so Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay fitted this perfectly. Rather than just have the girls walking round the villages I wanted to quirk it up a bit. For some reason the idea of a bride dressed as a fisherman made me smile and I hoped it would make the viewer smile too! So the theme for the shoot was born: vintage coastal life with a dash of kitsch.

.

My first task was to find the models. My fellow photographer buddy Ella jumped at the chance and her best friend Pam joined the fun too. Once I’d had their dress sizes I was lucky enough to borrow some stunning dresses from Sharon at Eternity Bride.  I wanted one with a really long train as I had visions of it bellowing in the wind on the beach. This was the champagne coloured strapless dress. The other dress was white and stunningly simple with just two string of pearls across the back. The final dress used in the shoot is from one of my client’s businesses Heirloom CoutureIt was a genuine vintage dress in champagne with a sage green coral style embroidery pattern. It was perfect for the shoot! All dresses are available for purchase, contact Lissa Alexandra Photography.

With my shots in mind, my next mission was to source the props. The lovely Rachel, from Simply Vintage Events was fantastic! After a random list of weird and wonderful things from me she came up with everything I wanted including anchors, fishermen’s hats, starfish, parasols, horseshoes, smoking pipes, bucket of flowers and much more!

.

Whilst at a wedding fair I met the very talented Katy from What Katy Did Next I was in awe of her stunning headpieces. I knew I definitely wanted to use her pieces for my shoot, and I think you’ll agree, they look amazing plus the models wanted to keep them all!

.

{Note: A What Katy Did Next headpiece is currently up for grabs on the wedding blog – click here to enter}

.
Katy then suggested I take a look at the button bouquets made by Emma at Beau Buttons
Again, wow, I fell in love! What fabulous bouquets and such a great alternative to flowers. I love the fact that they can be kept for life for passed down through generations.

.
One of the models had worked with the make up artist Natalie Greenwell.
Nat was a complete godsend. Not only was she brilliant at makeup and did exactly what I asked for but she was so jolly and upbeat. She even stayed the whole day and helped out as my assistant, superstar!

Finally the last piece of the puzzle was to find somewhere to stay. After doing a reccy of the villages I came across Staithes Cottages. Maureen sorted me out the perfect cottage dead in the centre of Staithes so we could walk about easily, which to the local and tourists caused much humour and intrigue!

The shots in all are a mixture of quirky, romantic and creative photographs which is generally how I cover my weddings. I like to capture natural moments sharing the subject’s personality. I also love to use props which I carry to all shoots with me. They’re a great way of helping people relax in front of the camera. By giving them something to do it really helps them with their confidence and they have a laugh with things, leading to more natural results, which I love!

Sing A Rainbow, A Real Wedding – Fran & James

July 22nd, 2011 | Brides Up North Wedding Blog

I dropped everything when I got this email from up and coming photographer Lissa Alexandra Photography and just, like, stared for a while.  Because this Real Wedding at Danby Castle (a Brides Up North Featured Supplier none the less!) is absolutely stunning and I can’t wait to share it on the wedding blog today.  With styling from the lovely Kim at The Fine and Funky Events Company,  I don’t even need to introduce it, or say why I love it.  You will see.  And then I’ll say “I told you so”.

Over to Miss Lissa: Fran and James got married on Saturday 9th July at Danby Castle. The theme was fun and vintage. It was very much a DIY wedding.  For the photographs, Fran and I discussed what props we could use in the photos in our first meeting and she organised these and we also used items out of the dressing up box provided by Danby Castle.

This couple certainly didn’t want a traditional affair!  They are both very keen cyclists so their bike had to appear in many of the photos as it was very special to them.

They had provided plenty of games scattered around the venue for the guests to play with but the best feature was a photo booth. Positioned on a tripod, the camera was facing a patterned backdrop and guests were encouraged to use the props and the dressing up box and take silly photos of each other. It was hilarious watching Granny and Gramps a bit tiddly, putting on Elton John glasses and mad hats.

It was also good fun when the ice cream van arrived, we kicked the ice cream man out of the van and got Fran and James to serve their guests their delights.

The day was absolutely fabulous but we were slightly unlucky with the weather – just as the ceremony finished the heavens opened and the bride and groom were held hostage by the weather whilst most of the guests braved it to the marquee (also which started to flood at one point!).

The true silver lining to this rain cloud was the delightful surprise that followed. I’d gone outside to check the state of the rain and couldn’t believe my luck. The rain had cleared and left over was a stunning rainbow positioned right in the middle of the valley as if a artist had painted it. I went running into the ceremony room where Fran was taking refuge calling her name and grabbed the both of them for the perfect photo opportunity. I’m so proud of that photo and I know they absolutely love it. If I was guaranteed a shot like that after every rain cloud then bring those babies on!

The bride says:  I cannot thank Lissa enough. We were keen to not have just the typical
wedding photographs and more wanted great artistic photos, that just happened to include us on our wedding day. And my word did we get that! I had never dared to imagine that our wedding photographs would be as beautiful as they are- they are breath taking. We are absolutely  overjoyed with them. And Lissa is fantastic. In pre-wedding meets I showed her the style of photos I liked, thinking we may get one or two that we liked, but Lissa blew them all out of the water- producing shot after shot- far better than those that I showed her. I just can’t believe these are OUR wedding photos- everyone is blown away with them. And not only are we happy (understatement of the century!) with the photos, but we can’t fault the way Lissa worked. Some photographers muscle their way in front of the guests- but not Lissa- she so subtle that we and our guest didn’t even notice her snapping away. Thank you a million times Lissa- I will be firmly recommending you to everyone I know (and even those I don’t!).

.

You just did Fran!
