full steam ahead! a special wedding blessing in The Lake District – heather & mike

December 17th, 2014 | Julia Braime

a laid back wedding blessing in the Pennines (c) Melissa Beattie (37)

What I love most about my job as editor of these pretty pages is the variety of stunning and special celebrations that I get to witness, albeit through a set of wonderfully curated images or a snappy wedding film.  I’ll be honest: sometimes I cry (in a good way).

One such submission that really touched me was the beautiful wedding blessing of ex-pats Heather and Mike, who returned to the UK following their Dubai wedding to celebrate with those they’d left back on English soil.  Their [pared down ‘second’ wedding day is stripped back to all that really matters on a wedding day – two people in love, their nearest and dearest (plus a killer gown, some great heels and a stunning backdrop always help).

I think it’s utterly beautiful.

With images by Melissa Beattie Photography.

heather says: We got engaged in October 2013 in Dubai where we live. I’d gone back to the UK to visit family and Mike used his time to go ring shopping. Mike proposed to me with a cup of tea (and a stunning ring) as I woke up the morning after a late arrival back into Dubai.

We actually got married on 6 April 2014 in Dubai but we wanted to have a Wedding Blessing and a celebration with our friends and family in the UK who could not make it. The blessing took place on 12 July 2014. As we are both teachers the dates for both events were rather un-romantically dictated by term time (and the hope of decent weather).

The Blessing service took place at St. Cuthbert’s Church, Edenhall, near Penrith. We chose this venue as it is a short walk from the family home where I grew up and where my family still live. It was a ultimately an easy decision as it is a beautiful church, in a beautiful setting next to the Eden River and with a stunning view of the Pennines.

After organising one wedding in Dubai, we were very lucky for our family to take charge of events in the UK. An evening party was held after the service on the ‘Raven’ Steamer on Ullswater Lake which was the brainchild of my Godmother Paula. Along with the jazz band that played throughout the evening.

We wanted the celebration to be laid back and relaxed. The overall aim was for us all to have a good time and catch up.

a laid back wedding blessing in the Pennines (c) Melissa Beattie (13)

I wore the same dress as I did for the wedding in Dubai much to the envy of many friends as I had the opportunity to wear it for a second time. The dress was handmade and embroidered by Lily Duds Tailoring, Dubai. The beauty of having the dress handmade was that I was able to get the dress just as I wanted and combine a variety of different designs I liked.

My Jimmy Choo heels brought an extra sparkle to my outfit and were even comfy enough to wear for the walk to and from the church.

I carried three hand tied peonies. Aunty Gillian and family friend, Yvonne Marples, arranged the flowers on the day. They wonderfully captured our relaxed theme through the flowers by creating a wild, country garden feel.

a laid back wedding blessing in the Pennines (c) Melissa Beattie (12)

Mike wore a 3-piece Prince of Wales check suit, which he had tailored at Ascot and Chapels, Dubai. His bow tie and pocket square were from Alexander Olch, New York, and his red brogues from O’Keefe.

Melissa Beattie was the photographer. She was also the photographer for our wedding in Dubai. We loved her photographs from this so much that we bullied her into taking the shots for the Wedding Blessing.

Her work is intimate, natural and she has a wonderful ability to make us look fabulous! We ultimately considered her one of our guests due to her warm and friendly manner.

She took a great deal of time and effort to ensure we got exactly what we wanted and edited and designed our wedding album beautifully

Hair and make-up was by Bridget Foster, Carlisle. Bridget is an excellent make up artist, who has a subtle touch and eye for detail, as well as having a wonderful personality.

a laid back wedding blessing in the Pennines (c) Melissa Beattie (28)

We actually only just made it to our own Wedding Blessing! Our passports were caught up in the fiasco with the UK Passport agency and were with the passport agency for 10 weeks and only arrived in Dubai 5 days before we were due to fly. A thank you to Rory Stewart, MP, and his office for all their help in chasing this matter!

A 1969 Red Double Decker Bus was hired from Stagecoach to take the guests and us to and from Glenridding Pier, to board the steamer.

Our favourite part of the day was simply being with family and friends, some of whom we had not seen in many years.

The steamer on the lake is a beautiful experience and loved by all of our guests. The scenery makes for a simply stunning backdrop – especially for us who spend most of our time looking at sand!

Due to the limitations for catering on the steamer itself, we went for canapés and mini meals from Bakerwood Marquees and Events who far exceeded our expectations. The food was fresh, delicious, plentiful and was provided to our guest by a very attentive team of waiters.

We created personalised brown Mr and Mrs sweetie bags, which contained personalised rock and Love Hearts sweets.

The Dixie Kings Jazz Band was chosen for the evening to suit setting of cruising down Ullswater lake. They provided fabulous entertainment, loved by the old and the young, and we all danced the night away.

We honeymooned in Zanzibar, which provided an ideal balance between relaxation and adventure.

My top tip for other Brides Up North is to enjoy the day! It is about you both not everybody else.

fancy footwork. the designer series: Charlotte Mills Bridal

September 8th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Charlotte Mills Bridal 2015 (c) Jonny Draper Photography (5)

A relative newcomer to the bridal design scene, Charlotte Mills is a bit of a genius.

Launched to huge acclaim within the industry, the talented designer (and all round lovely North West lass) offers affordable luxury to style conscious brides giving them a more fashion forward option to traditional wedding shoes.

We like her style.

And we want her shoes.

With images by Jonny Draper and Sarah Saddler (see little white book for full credits)

Charlotte Mills Bridal 2015 (c) Jonny Draper Photography (1)

Charlotte says: We create beautiful, elegant, fun, romantic designs we hope brides will fall in love with and want to wear again and again after their wedding day.

Charlotte Mills Bridal 2015 (c) Jonny Draper Photography (12)

What were your inspirations for this collection?

Love hearts provide the inspiration for collection each style incorporating them in a unique and individual way.  I love art deco and art nouveau, so studied heart shapes and also the lines used in the architecture of these era’s and gave them a modern twist to create the designs.  For as long as I can remember I have always has a passion for shoes. I couldn’t imagine designing anything else.

It amazing to be able to design something which some one will love and want to wear on their wedding day to show a little bit of their personality. I find this really inspiring.

Each shoe is hand finished with a silver sixpence and the leather sole is embossed with the phrase ‘Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue and a silver sixpence in her shoe.’

We have covered all bases. The Sixpence is also the Something Old, the Something New is the shoe, the Something Blue is detailed on the insock and the Something Borrowed will be inside the shoe box. Brides love this old tradition. This detailing is unique to Charlotte Mills Bridal shoes.

Charlotte Mills Bridal 2015 (c) Jonny Draper Photography (19)

What shapes, materials and embellishments were chosen for the collection?

The collection has been created using laser cutting, appliqué and embroidery techniques. Each shoe is handmade in Spain using finest materials such as Italian Kid Suede, silks, tulle or metallic and pearlised leathers and is embellished with large structured bows, embroideries, appliqués or Swarovski crystals.

What is your average retail price?

£250.00

Charlotte Mills Bridal 2015 (c) Jonny Draper Photography (23)

What does 2015 hold for Charlotte Mills?  What are you excited about?

I am busy designing lots of new styles to add to the range and working on a top-secret collection.

Seeing images of all the ‘Charlotte Mills brides’ is so exciting and as we have only just launched there is a time delay because people tend to buy so far in advance for weddings. It will be amazing to see our shoes featured in someone’s special day.

Charlotte Mills Bridal 2015 (c) Jonny Draper Photography (4)

What are your ‘best things’ in life?

Shoes Shoes Shoes!

My husband, family and friends, my dogs Meg and Coco, pink, holidays, cake, weddings and fashion – I could go on and on…

gorgeous grandeur. a simple & stunning wedding at sheffield town hall – dora & matt

July 21st, 2014 | Rachel Parry

A Wedding at Sheffield Town Hall (c) S6 Photography

When I was a journalism student I recall going to Sheffield’s Town Hall to interview Lord Seb Coe and being instantly struck by the opulence and grandeur of the impressive building. Fast forward several years and I was recently back there interviewing a long serving BBC radio presenter which reinforced just how stunning the iconic Sheffield venue really is.

So when I spotted Rob and Dora’s beautiful wedding, photographed by the hugely talented Jon at S6 Photography, I was desperate to share it here on the blog to show others just how special the building is.

Some may think a town hall isn’t necessarily the most glamorous venue – but I’m telling you, it doesn’t get any more regal than this – cue spectacular stain glass windows, fine chandeliers and one heck of a marble staircase.

All this coupled with Rob and Dora’s simple yet striking styling makes for an incredibly swoon-worthy wedding.

A Wedding at Sheffield Town Hall (c) S6 Photography

Dora says:  We got married on April 12th 2014 in Sheffield, which is where we met while attending Sheffield Hallam University. We chose the Town Hall in Sheffield, because of the amazing architecture and grandeur of the building. The amazing staircase in the middle of the main entrance was very appealing too.

We wanted the style of the wedding to be quite relaxed. In terms of colours, we used lots of green flowers against the white of the tables because we liked the country style feel. We also liked the clean white look and didn’t want anything too formal. Opulent Styling from Sheffield provided our chair covers and olive green sashes. Bev and Jean were great and helped make our day a success. We would definitely recommend them to other couples.

My dress was a vintage style gown from Phase Eight. I chose it because I wanted something a bit different, with embellishment, something slim-fitting (not meringue style) that was floor length, a detailed back, but especially I wanted it to be vintage style.

Rob wore a blue Reiss three-piece suit and with a light check while the groomsmen all wore grey three-piece Occasion suits.

My bridesmaids wore floor length grey/purple dresses from Coast.

I carried a bouquet of flowers from Floral Magic, based in Stocksbridge, Sheffield. I had a mixture of white tulips, paper whites, thesspi green bell, freesia, anemones, ranunculus, and a dusky pink rose.

Jon Dennis of S6 Photography was our photographer. I would highly recommend Jon because of the exceptionally high quality photos we have of our day. We knew that this was a once in a lifetime day and we are so glad that we have it documented from such a great photographer. Jon made us, and our guests, feel relaxed all day and all of our guests noted how good he was.

Our favourite part of the day was the ceremony itself. We were both nervous about seeing each other but as soon as we got together and hugged each other after walking down the aisle we relaxed. It felt very important that we were sharing our vows with all of the people who are important in our lives.

Candy Floss Kisses! Supplier Showcase: Love Is Sweet Company PLUS 15% OFF For Wedding Blog Readers!

August 1st, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Yesterday, after a virtuous early morning workout at the pool, I took a two mile detour on the way home to stop at the corner shop for a mix-up.  Not so virtuous, I know, but maybe there is something psychological left over from my swimming lessons days which tells me I need candy just after swimming lengths!

.

Personal psychoanalysis aside, one thing is for sure – I am a big sweetie fan – so when I met Featured Supplier Rachael of Love Is Sweet Company at the last Brides Up North Super Showcase Grand Wedding Exhibition, I knew it was going to be a lasting relationship.  Rachael was even kind enough to fuel my North East Tweet Up wedding industry event with sugar spun candy floss (she was a big hit!) and I can’t recommend her sweet services enough.

.

Let’s meet the lady holding all the love hearts.

.

.

Love Is Sweet Company by Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography

.

.

How did Love Is Sweet Company begin?

.

Love is Sweet Company began after planning my own wedding. I absolutely loved being involved with the wedding industry! I was just finishing my BA (hons) degree in Textiles and Surface design at the time, so thought I’d put this to use in creating decorative and beautiful sweet displays.

.

Sweet bars were fast becoming the new trend for brides and grooms to be. But I found there was a gap for really decorative and personalised designs.

.

.

Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography

.

.

Tell us all about your sweetie table and candy floss cart service?

.

I’m passionate about giving my brides and grooms a really personal service to create beautiful sweet displays. Most of my glass wear is uniquely sourced so no two sweet bars are the same! Sweet bars are designed to match colour schemes or themes, I can add items from vintage tea cups and tea pots to candelabras and flowers and bunting. Give me a theme and I’ll design something to match.

.

For a personal touch I add traditional sweet cones to every bar with your big day details on them, these make fab little favours for your guests to take home.

.

Everyone loves candy floss! Bringing the fun of the fair right to you, our fabulous cart is perfect for every occasion. The cart is hired by the hour and supplies you and your guests with as much floss as you can possibly eat! Freshly spun in front of your eyes, it’s like magic!

.

Why not try our gourmet package? This allows you to get create and add tantalising flavours to your floss. From strawberry and cherry to watermelon and blueberry, yummy! And to top it off you can add popping candy to the top of your floss, for a real exploding experience.

.

.

Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography

.

.

What can a bride and groom who book Love Is Sweet Company expect?

.

Every bride and groom can expect a truly unique and personal service. I’m passionate about customer service and feel getting to know my customer is an essential part of this.

.

And of course you can expect that your wedding will be a ‘sweet’ one when hiring Love is Sweet Company.

.

.

What sets you apart from your competition?

.

I offer a number of services all in one place from the sweet bars to candy floss, popcorn to sweet favours.

Unlike some other sweet bar companies I stay with your bar for the hire period to make sure its clean and tidy from beginning to end.

.

I provide my clients with a memorable and personal experience.

.

.

Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography

.

.

Why is booking Love Is Sweet Company a good alternative to wedding favours?

.

Just like the sweet bars I can match your favours to colour schemes and themes. They all come personalised with your guests names on too, which double up as unique place settings.

.

You can order jars filled or empty. Our empty jars work fabulously alongside our sweet bars, allowing guests to fill up their own jars from the bar.

.

.

Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography   Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography

.

.

We hear that you have a popcorn cart too? Tell us about it?

.

I’m proud to welcome a new addition to the Love is Sweet Company family, our Popcorn cart!

Love Hearts, A Real Wedding – Anita & Chris

So you survived the festivities! To celebrate, a very special Real Wedding sent to me by the lovely Caroline of Candy Snaps, my latest Featured Supplier.

Caroline gives us the low down: This is Anita & Chris. They got married on 4th December at the Oran Mor in Glasgow. It was a very small intimate wedding with only their close friends and family present.
