a modern monroe. a styled bridal portrait shoot

March 4th, 2015 | Julia Braime

a styled shoot inspired by Marilyn Monroe (c) Julie Lomax Photography (38)

To me, Marilyn Monroe is the ultimate Hollywood icon – all curves, pout and platinum locks – so when a talented North West collective of wedding industry suppliers asked me to share these styled bridal images of a modern day Marilyn, it was lights, camera, action

a styled shoot inspired by Marilyn Monroe (c) Julie Lomax Photography (19)

Photographer Julie from Julie Lomax Photography has been running her own business in Bolton for 10 years. As well as weddings she does a lot of portrait work so really enjoys working with people to ensure they’re comfortable and at ease so that she gets the best shots possible.

julie says: When we first started to plan this photo-shoot we’d been inspired by the undeniable and timeless beauty of the fabulous Marilyn Monroe. Our model, Melissa Jade Cheetham has that enviable petite figure, killer smile and cropped blond hair and was the inspiration behind the look that we eventually created. However, Melissa’s classic features were brought up to date with a more edgy side complete with tattoos and piercings, elements that really showcased her personality and made us want to bring Miss Monroe bang up to date!

After doing some research and creating some inspirational mood boards on Pinterest, we decided that to achieve a more up-to-date, on-trend bridal look we would have to add in some sparkle and chose gold metallics combined with black to create our look.

My style of photography requires plenty of natural light which is why The Dance Mill, Halifax was perfect, it has fabulous big industrial windows and a large mirrored wall for the students to practice in which reflected all the light beautifully, enabling me to really show off the details on the dress and capture the colours perfectly.

With over 10 years of designing and dressmaking experience, Charlotte Yates and the team at Legend Bridal, Lancashire have a spectacular reputation with customers travelling from all over the UK. As well as designing and creating fabulously unique, made-to-measure wedding dresses, Legend Bridal also create all manner of dresses, costumes, ball gowns, mother of the bride outfits and a wide range of accessories from bridal head pieces to corsages, bags and hats. Between them, the team have a wide range of training and disciplines, from design and couture, to embroidery, beading and millinery.

charlotte says: We thought of the iconic ‘Marilyn’ dresses; the signature empire cut and nipped in waistline. We took those elements, updated it with gold sequins and added a Legend twist teaming it up with jagged tulle and black petticoats.

Hair and Make Up was by Debra Schofield at Ruby Red Lips and Lucinda at Lucinda Kay Hair Design.

Debra opened Bolton’s first make-up studio and works with her team of talented make-up artists at Bolton’s Last Drop Village. The team have a loyal customer base for weddings, special events and proms and work with their clients to achieve their desired make-up look whether that be a natural look or full-on glam.

debra says: We wanted to work with Melissa’s natural pale skin tone but add some classic Marilyn elements by giving her statement eyebrows, fabulous long fluttery eyelashes, bold rep lips and of course that iconic beauty spot!

Lucinda is a freelance hair-stylist based in the North West but travels all over the country creating spectacular hair styles. With over seven years of experience, Lucinda started the business two years ago and has seen it go from strength to strength, even styling the hair for the prestigious Miss World Competition last year. As well as bridal hair, Lucinda specialises in colouring, cutting, and styling for photo-shoots and shows.

lucinda says: I used heated tongs to create the curls and then set the hair to get that retro look. Once cooled, I brushed the hair out and created volume using a backcomb spray before setting with hairspray to make sure it held throughout the shoot. The look was finished with a shine spray to make sure it looked perfectly glamorous, just like Marilyn!

The styling for the shoot was done using a selection of props including some on-trend giant lit letter M’s courtesy of Hollywood Letters, fabulous florals from Victoria at Lancashire Floristry and beautiful cakes created by Rachel at Marie Antoinette Cakes.

Phil Ingram started Hollywood Letters in 2014, based in the North West, they supply giant lit letters for any occasion or event. Whether you want individual initials, full words, giant love hearts, or even smaller table top letters, the team at Hollywood Letters can help. Their large white M and smaller black M were perfect for the shoot and really helped bring that classic Marilyn look up to date.

The team asked Victoria from Lancashire Floristry to create some beautiful floral arrangements for the shoot and she didn’t disappoint. Embracing the colour scheme, Victoria, who works from her shop in Bolton, supplied arrangements in a selection of rose gold vases teamed up with whites, pale pink and black to complete the look.

The cakes were designed and created by the photo-shoot’s co-organiser Rachel from Marie Antoinette Cakes. Based in South Manchester, Rachel has been creating people’s wedding cakes for the last three years and has quickly developed her own signature style.

rachel says: The colour scheme and theme were a dream for me, pastels, gold and black are just so popular right now and styled shoots like this really give me the opportunity to show clients what can be done when it comes to their wedding cake. Cake decorating has really come on leaps and bounds in recent years and there’s just so much possibility. We used a selection of techniques to create three stunning cakes, including edible gold leaf, edible gold sequins, sugar ruffles, and a selection of handmade sugar flowers. The whole look really came together when teamed with the other elements of the shoot, we’re really pleased!

outdoor elegance. a romantic real wedding in the north west – kerry & anthony

November 6th, 2014 | Julia Braime

vintage mauve countryside wedding (c) Julie Lomax Photography (38)

This morning we join newlyweds Kerry and Anthony for their oh-so-pretty wedding in the North West.  A gorgeous gown, beautiful blooms and a softly romantic colour palette proved the perfect recipe for a stunning celebration.

Le sigh.

With images by Julie Lomax Photography.

Kerry says: We got engaged in Barcelona. Anthony took me away for the week after my birthday, he made a scrap book with pictures and quotes in it of our time together over the previous 5 years. It included our first Christmas and our first holiday together along with other special occasions. On the back page it read ‘Will you marry me?’ and he was down on one knee when I looked up.

The women in my family all share our wedding anniversary in August. Keeping up with family tradition we chose 9th August 2014. We were married at St Peters Church RC, Middleton. This is a family church, my dad and my granddad made built the entrance to this church and the original altar.

The wedding had a rustic country garden feel, with a vintage twist. We are both very down to earth people and wanted people to feel comfortable and enjoy the day. We feel like this came across on the day, a lot of people commented on the feeling of romance in the theme and style.

We chose a colour scheme of vintage mauve, in keeping with the country feel.

My wedding dress was a Jenny Packham gown, called Ruby (also my birth stone)! I only tried three wedding dresses on and knew straight away that ‘she’ was the one. It was in keeping with the style and feel of the wedding and I felt a million dollars wearing it.

I bought her from the girls at The White Closet in Didsbury.

Anthony wore a morning suit, in deep navy, with an ivory cravat from Groom in Manchester.

The girls wore twobirds Bridesmaid dresses, They loved them! Everyone commented on how gorgeous they looked. The girls wore their dresses differently, to reflect their different personalities and styles. The colour I wanted had not been released in the UK so had to be shipped to the shop from America.

We had a VW camper Van, our all-time favourite! We hired her from Nick Connah Camper Hire. The guests travelled in a 1961 AEC Bridge Master vintage bus hired from Yorkshire Heritage Bus Company.

Our photographer was Julie Lomax, We met her at a wedding fair in Manchester. She was very approachable and very professional, however after spending time with her felt like she was a long-time friend. She knew exactly how we wanted our wedding photographing and it really felt like she was one of our guests on our wedding day. We were totally at ease working with her.

Rebecca Reville was our videographer.  We cant wait to see her master piece from our wedding day, another amazingly talented person who made our day so special. She worked amazingly well with Julie our photographer!

We had birdcages with tea lights hanging from the inner side of the cage. This sat on a bed of flowers (in keeping with flowers in my bouquet) and in the centre was a layer of moss, sitting on a tree trunk plinth.

Scattered on the table were numerous tea light holder in different sizes and styles. These really added to the country garden effect and added that extra romance in the evening once it had gone dark.

Our flowers were by the amazing Victoria from Lancashire Floristry. Her hard work and commitment in the run up to our wedding day was outstanding. I loved my flowers!

Everyone received a scratch card and a miniature spirit bottle, these were in a personalised favour box with our names and the date of the wedding. These were printed by Cotton Letterpress. We individualised the favour boxes by giving each person their favourite spirit.

Our cake was four tiers made by the wonderful Rachel Hanna, owner of Marie Antoinette Cakes.

Sheila O’Sullivan our wedding singer sang in the Church, adding to the romance with her perfect voice. There wasn’t a dry eye in the church! Our wedding guests still comment on her talent.

We hired a casino and a magician to keep everyone entertained whilst we had our pictures.

Our band for the evening cancelled on us on the week before the wedding, after being booked for 14months. After everyone chipping in to help find a replacement, Champagne Skies came to the rescue. They were amazing and totally pulled it out of the bag for us.

vintage mauve countryside wedding (c) Julie Lomax Photography (54)

My favourite part of the day was walking down the aisle. It was day I dreamt about for so long. I couldn’t wait to see Anthony and his reaction when he saw me, but I also knew that once I got to the end of the aisle and met him, I’d soon be his wife. After 9 years together, it was a moment I was so looking forward to.

For our honeymoon we went to Mexico, Rivera Maya. It was total luxury and relaxation. We had both worked so hard in the 12 months before the wedding and it was just what we needed. We spent two weeks bonding and being together. Plus Anthony surprised me to swimming with Dolphins during our second week out there, number one on my bucket list! Daily massages on the beach, tea on the beach in the evenings and plenty of drunken nights on tequila.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be that although at times the planning can be very stressful, remember the main reason why you are doing it. It really will be the best day of your lives if you relax and take it all in. Make sure you make time for each other on the day too! It goes so quickly and before you know it, it’s the last dance, but make sure to enjoy the day together, we stayed by each other’s side throughout the day.

If I had the chance to do it all again tomorrow… I would!

Deco Does It. A Modern Art Deco Wedding Inspiration Shoot In Morecambe.

April 30th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Julie Lomax Photography

Earlier this spring a group of North West wedding suppliers got together to collaborate on a contemporary art deco styled wedding photo-shoot at The Midland Hotel in Morecambe on the North West coast.

Brides Up North exhibitors (you can meet them both at our Hilltop Country House event in just under two weeks – click here for details) photographer Julie Lomax and cake specialist Rachel Hanna of Marie Antoinette Cakes teamed up with Vicky Cruse at The Midland Hotel to create something really special. The Midland was originally built in 1933 and is the epitome of art deco elegance and glamour. In 2013 it was lovingly restored and transformed to perfectly blend the original grandeur with a luxurious modernist style.

Julie Lomax Photography

Julie says: As the hotel sits right along the Lancashire coastline, it provides the perfect setting for a wedding filled with seaside chic with incredible views, particularly from the fantastic bridal suite with its huge secluded balcony featuring a private hot tub!

Inside the hotel you can make use of several different spaces for your wedding but it’s the huge Art Deco staircase that we really love with elegant sweeping lines that just seem to go on forever, a chance to get some truly unique and timeless photographs.

The team spent a long time searching for the perfect suppliers to collaborate with and certainly struck gold with a beautiful selection of headpieces, statement jewellery, flowers, dresses and a classic black tuxedo.

I was keen to keep the shoot as in-keeping with my natural-light style as possible, something that was relatively easy at The Midland given it’s huge windows. Capturing all of the different details whilst strongly featuring the character of the hotel was something really important to me and I spent time assessing the location prior to the shoot to ensure that I got the best photos possible on the day.

Julie Lomax Photography

The beautiful dresses were a selection of beaded Jenny Packham gowns – Rose, Eden and Esme from Mears Ghyll Bridal in Lancaster who also stock a wonderful selection of gowns from designers Alan Hannah, Charlotte Balbier and Suzanne Neville. The stunningly simple Maggie Sottero Oriana dress is from Butterfly Bridal in Lancaster who are also stockists of gowns by Justin Alexander and Essense Australia.

Samantha from Isobel Hind Couture is a very talented jewellery designer and her collection of jewellery and headpieces is really something special. Her unique style translates wonderfully to this collection which caught the eye of celebrity stylist and designer Kate Halfpenny who now stocks pieces from the range in her London showroom.

Jane from HF Couture in North Yorkshire has been designing bespoke and unique headdresses, tiaras and bouquets for over five years and they really are beautiful. If you’re looking for a one off piece that will fit perfectly with your dress then look no further. Jane has recently been commissioned by British bridal designer Madeline Isaac-James to create a range of accessories to match her 2015 bridal collection.

A wedding isn’t complete without flowers and Bolton-based florist Victoria from Lancashire Floristry didn’t disappoint when she created two stunning bridal arrangements with matching buttonholes for the groom. The first was a collection of black call lillies, ivory roses, brunia, black eyed chins and gorgeous succulents. Victoria also made an amazing art deco style fan of flowers using pipped hyacinth heads, tulips and beautiful white orchids, all wired together with a jewel beads.

Julie Lomax Photography

Rachel, my fellow organiser, from Marie Antoinette Cakes created a black, white and silver art deco themed cake for the shoot with clean lines, sharp edges, geometric shapes and patterns. Her award winning cakes are renowned for their eye catching design and deliciously moreish recipes. Rachel uses the best quality ingredients and takes the time to really understand your cake requirements in a free, no obligation consultation. Her designs include the increasingly popular Simply Antoinette range which was launched in 2012 but bespoke designs are equally as in demand. Not only does she create tiered cakes but also makes cupcakes, cake tables, dessert tables and wedding favours.

Debra from Ruby Red Lips Makeup is based at her studio at the beautiful Last Drop Village in Bolton and has a real passion for makeup and really making you and your bridal party feel extra special. Debra takes the time to really understood your skin and the look you want to create in a pre-wedding trial so that everything on the day runs smoothly and you and your bridal party can really enjoy the experience and feel pampered. For this shoot so created really strong eyes and lips and took inspiration from the flowers with deep purple on the eye lids and on the lips.

Alex Lee from Sarah’s Hair in Bolton was the hair stylist on the day and spent time beforehand understanding the models hair, researching art deco hair styles and understanding the headpieces before deciding upon a style. She used thin tongs to create curls which were then softened to create a modern, softer version of the classic finger wave. Alex was then on hand throughout the course of the day to fix various headpieces into place which she made look a lot easier than it actually is!

Chelsea Leigh Edgar – Miss Bury 2014 – was the stunning bride for this wonderful shoot and looked amazing next to our groom, Peter Smithson. Chelsea is studying for a degree in Fine Art but enjoys modelling in her spare time having worked with me on previous shoots.

Behind The Blog: Brides Up North Goes Vintage At The Bowdon Rooms, Cheshire

May 23rd, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Martin Hambleton Photography

Ellie and I taking a breather!

.

If you follow the wedding blog over on Twitter or Facebook (and why ever not?! – go get involved) and catch my feeds of a Sunday, you will know that the last few months have been absolutely manic behind the scenes here at Brides Up North HQ.  And I’m talking every. single. weekend.

.

We are verrrrry near to completing a full season of fabulous Brides Up North branded luxury wedding exhibitions for Spring 2013, with just one to go (diarise this: we are at Sarah Beeny’s Rise Hall on Sunday 9th June, bringing together the best wedding suppliers in East Yorkshire under Ms “Restoration Nightmare”’s very, very lovely roof) and with eight (EIGHT!) under our belt since the season kicked off back at Allerton Castle on a frosty morning in early February, I’m ready for a summer holiday!

.

I think I have aged at least ten years since New Years Eve.

.

Each event is hard, hard work and takes months of planning, promoting, sales and admin.  Oh the admin!  Luckily I have a full time assistant here at Brides Up North HQ now (hello Kate!), but this blog and it’s related events are my (other) baby, and I invest a lot of time and energy into making sure that each and every event is individual, venue appropriate and just right.

.

.

Martin Hambleton Photography

.

.

Last Sunday, it was time for my tiny team to head North West for the very first time, to the unique and authentic vintage venue that is The Bowdon Rooms, Altrincham.  Just on the doorstep of Hale and Bowdon, this delectable dance hall with it’s high cornices and sprung floors is prime for a wedding party.

.

.

.

And what a swell party it was!  Our wonderful team of wedding industry suppliers decorated the venue from head to toe with their vintage and luxury loveliness.  Feathers, sequins, beading, antique lace and the odd cloche hat sat beautifully alongside fresh blooms and pretty printed papers.

.

.

Martin Hambleton Photography

.

.

It didn’t stop inside either, outside Matt Bowen Photography brought along his gorgeous new girlfriend: Florence The Vintage Caravan (available for hire as a photo booth on your big day) and Event In A Tent and Woodland Weddings invited visitors into their cosy tipi for delicious canapes by Greengages.  As the weather – amazingly – was in our favour, the garden also played host to an impromptu jam session from Dominic Halpin and his swing band, who also entertained hourly on the main stage.

.

.

Martin Hambleton Photography

Pretty florals from Barkers The Florist, who beautified the whole venue with their blooms

And oh! the music.  The venue is an operating jazz club, so I was keen to reflect this on the day.  Performances from Dominic and the boys along with Minerva Ensemble, It’s A Wind Up! vintage DJs and with Phil Lyons and his New Vintage Band on site kept the place buzzing all day long.

There wasn’t much time to chat once doors opened!  My wonderful friend Ellie and I (big love to Ellie) were on our feet all day greeting brides to be and their families, and shifting a whole lot of Brides Up North goody bags.

.

Luckily, my friend and fellow exhibitor Martin Hambleton Photography was around to catch a bit of the action in these beautiful images showing off the talents of our other suppliers, although even he got a little bit side-lined!

.

Martin says: Well done on organising such a brilliant show!  I’m sorry there aren’t as many images of brides browsing – every time I moved away from the stand looking for shots, someone stopped to look at my albums so I had to dash back (that’s not a complaint)!

.

Martin, that kind of distraction I absolutely do not have a problem with!

If you didn’t make it on Sunday, we are doing it all over again in November!  As part of our Autumn tour, we’ll be back in Altrincham on Sunday 3rd November 2013 for another beautiful event filled with wedding inspiration and some winter vintage sparkle.

.

But first, a little rest, if you please!

.

Enjoy these images and do visit our wonderful exhibitors’ websites when sourcing your wedding suppliers.  I would personally recommend each and every one of them.
