In preparation for a wedding a lot of attention is focused on the bride and what she will wear for her moment in the limelight. But we shouldn’t forget that the groom is also a main focal point and they too will want to look and feel their best on the big day.

Over time we’ve seen menswear designers branch out on the formalwear front to give style-conscious grooms choices beyond traditional top hat and tails and standard Prince Edward suits. This not only gives grooms the opportunity to be more fashion forward, but also means they can pick attire that will complement the bride, theme and even the setting.

To tell us more about current groom looks, we’ve called upon our expert friends at British menswear retailer T.M.Lewin, whose latest collection of luxurious tailoring includes up to 30 different cuts of suits in wool/mohair mix cloths, plus an unrivalled choice of beautifully finished 100% cotton shirts and finishing touches in the form of smart ties and dapper pocket squares.

Here they share their top five occasion wear trends for the upcoming season, and they’ve even gone to the trouble of matching them up to some of Brides Up North’s very favourite wedding venues. Handy eh?

cool contemporary – alnwick garden

A cool setting calls for a cool suit. Blue is perhaps the new grey when it comes to an alternative groom look so those planning a wedding in modern setting, such as The Alnwick Garden in the North East, should consider the handsome hue. We can easily imagine a groom in the bright and airy Pavilion Room taking his vows while overlooking the incredible gardens in a relaxed two piece suit. And to complete the look a crisp white shirt, tan belt and shoes, and textured bow tie. Finally, for the ultra-cool groom, a polka dot pocket square as men appear to be dotty about all things spotty at the moment.

urban elegance – braime pressings

City weddings give grooms the opportunity to mix up their look with some modern additions. For a venue such as 125-year-old steel factory Braime Pressings, attire that mixes old with new is an excellent choice as it will pick up on the venue’s heritage as well as its modern day surroundings.  We suggest a classic three-piece suit but in a slim-fit cut and edgy blue hue to strike the right balance. Through industrial, Braime Pressings, in the heart of Leeds, features impressive parquet flooring and a marble bar which call for a hint of elegance. This can be achieved in finishing touches of a fabric button hole and slim tie, complete with tie bar.

timeless traditional – allerton castle

Certain venues do lend themselves well to traditional groom attire including the likes of Allerton Castle in North Yorkshire. Its fairy tale interior and dramatic features give brides the opportunity to be a real princess for the day, but of course they need a prince to match, making a three-piece suit with waistcoat a top option. We find that light grey and tonal blue tailoring is an ideal choice for a formal wedding day and our 50s inspired pastel accessories will polish off the look perfectly, whether it’s a sharp mint green fitted shirt with textured cotton linen mix tie, or a colourful pocket square and stylish lapel pin.

country casual – hilltop country house

With an increase in country garden themed weddings it seems only right that designers have come up with fitting groomsmen attire. Whether indoors or out, a wedding at a countryside location, such as Hilltop Country House in Cheshire, gives grooms the opportunity to go for a more laid back look that complements with their surroundings. Our new casual blazers are ideal for those in favour of more informal attire. Woven in tweeds exclusive to T.M.Lewin, they’re still smart when paired with a pressed pair of cotton chinos and one of the season’s new plain, patterned or textured pocket squares. Those wanting a smarter look still can add a waistcoat and tie while those who prefer the simpler things in life can go for a blazer, chinos and open neck shirt.

Hilltop Country House 2015_03_02-06_TMLewin_0786b

modern classic – the mansion

Just as some old venues are brought up to date with a few cosmetic tweaks so too are classic suits. So for a groom saying his ‘I dos’ in grand stately home, such as The Mansion in Leeds, which boasts beautiful boutique style décor, we suggest a simple yet sophisticated two piece suit, with a one or two button blazer. The accessories can then be picked to suit the colour theme and/or bridesmaid dresses whether that means pairing with a pale pink or elegant blue shirt, tie and matching pocket square.

.

.

So, fancy a bit of eye candy on a Saturday?

.

I’m off to see the latest 007 this afternoon so I’ll be getting my kicks Daniel Craig-stylee, and thought it most unfair not to leave something lovely for you ladies to gaze upon, courtesy of Brides Up North Featured Supplier Stan Seaton Photography and Darlington Weddings (pick up the latest issue to see this shoot in print along with my spread on styling a winter wedding).

.

Plus, I’ve seen first hand that Affleck & Moffat – one of my amazing exhibitors at our Brides Up North Super Showcase Grand Wedding Exhibitions – really know how to dress a gent, so they’d be worth a visit for his wedding day styling.

.

If he asks: its wedding research.  Got it?

Jane and Stan of Stan Seaton Photography say: We love photographing brides and ensuring that their wedding day photos reflect how amazingly beautiful and happy they looked and felt on their big day, but it is good to show our clients – and especially the girls – how good their grooms can look too!  When Darlington Weddings offered us the opportunity to do a featured menswear photo shoot for their latest magazine, in conjunction with Affleck & Moffat menswear, Paul David Hairdressing and Crathorne Hall Hotel, we couldn’t resist!

Spoil Yourself! Supplier Showcase: Elegance Bridal Boutique

August 18th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

What’s Saturday for if it’s not for spoiling yourself?  I know one lady – Brides Up North Featured Supplier Julia of Elegance Bridal Studio – who can help you to do just that.

.

With accolades for amazing customer service coming at them from all directions, you’d do well to direct your wedding dress hunt their way.

.

Have a fantastic weekend!

.

.

Elegance Bridal Studio

.

.

When did Elegance Bridal Studio open and what is your background?

.

Elegance Bridal Studio was born in August 2005. It was always an ambition of mine since I can remember to work in the bridal industry. I guess you could call it my vocation in life, my mum would have to drag me away from the local bridal shop window as I would insist on walking past it when we went to town shopping on a Saturday, just so I could catch a glimpse of all the beautiful dresses. Upon leaving school I enquired at two local bridal shops (there were only two at that time) but they were both family run and they had no vacancies for a 16 year old, so I had to put my dream on the back burner. I then had a mixed career in retail, beauty therapy and also hospitality working at 5* level, which looking back has been good grounding as I use almost all the skills and training that I learnt in my past employment, which has helped me build my business. I also sold my home to finance my dream, as I didn’t want to start my business in debt with a mortgage.  Given the recent recession it was the right decision to make and I do not regret it one little bit, however I wouldn’t recommend it for the faint hearted!

.

.

What lines of wedding gowns do you stock?

.

The designers that we stock have all been chosen not only for their amazing designs but also for their reputation and reliability within the bridal industry. We currently stock beautiful gowns by Trudy Lee whose designs are red carpet glamour with a touch of fairy-tale without the expense.  They give today’s bride excellent value for money.  Bride’s are often pleasantly surprised when they see the price tag.

.

Our next designer is the fabulous Jean Fox who has been making brides beautiful for over 80 years, they are an Australian company based in Sydney and they have a such a huge selection of designs.  It is always hard for us to choose from their new collections because they are all truly divine.  The internal corsetry within these gowns are absolutely superb and flatter any figure which eliminates the need for a bridal corset to be worn providing total comfort for the bride.  These gowns are so lightweight that they can be worn anywhere around the world which means that brides getting married abroad can have an actual bridal gown not just the typical floaty destination gown.  New for us this year are the Jean Fox couture silk gowns that have just arrived, these gowns are truly special, all handmade in Australia using only the very finest silks and embellishments whilst also giving brides so many options in change of design.  If you prefer a sweetheart neckline or maybe a shorter train or even some delicate straps, then you can have whatever your heart desires.  We actually witnessed a silk gown being made when we visited their workrooms in Sydney and, it was fascinating to watch the highly skilled seamstress create these beautiful gowns.  You could see how much care and attention went into each detail of the gown.  Whilst each crystal was sewn into place by hand, there is also a little finishing touch that every Jean Fox silk gown has which is her signature blue bow that’s sewn onto the inside of the dress, so you never forget your something blue.

.

Last but certainly not least are the show stopping designs by the multi award winning bridal designer Wendy Makin who is based in Brisbane, Australia. Wendy’s gowns from her Bella Donna Collection are fresh, modern & affordable with a choice of little added extras such as flowers, vintage brooches, sparkly belts and lace cap sleeves. Brides can simply change their look from day to evening whilst also having some flexibility in change of design and of course they are lightweight gowns that can be worn at home or abroad! We have just taken delivery of her new designs and we have fallen in love with them.

.

.

What lines of accessories do you stock?

.

We have a very sparkly selection of accessories due to my love for anything that sparkles! I have hand picked each accessory individually to compliment our gowns, so that brides can choose from several different pieces before they find a look that they feel confident and totally excited about. We stock everything from the traditional tiara & side tiaras to diamanté hair slides, pretty pearl combs, hair vines, veils, shoes, jewellery and even garters.  Our collection is always changing and we don’t like to sell more than two of the same accessory, which makes our brides look totally unique.

.

All our veils are hand made so we can change the designs and embellishments to compliment any gown.

.

.

Where are you located?

.

Our boutique is really easy to find and is situated at 2 Eastgate, Barnsley, South Yorkshire. We are in the town centre located only a five minute walk from the travel interchange, or if you are travelling by car we are a ten minute drive from Junction 37 off the M1. We can also direct you to the free car park that is available on weekends and evenings.

.

.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

.

Our made to order gowns are priced from £695 – £2,400 and we also have our designer discontinued collection that starts from just £99 – £599, these gowns are available to buy off the peg, making them ideal for last minute weddings or limited budgets.

.

.

Do Brides Up North need an appointment?

.

Yes, we work by appointment only as we feel that choosing your bridal gown needs not only our expert advice and one to one personal attention, but also total privacy which means that when you book an appointment with us, there are no other brides present and you have the exclusive and sole use of our boutique making your visit to us comfortable and stress free.  Whether you are spending £99 or £1,999 you will receive the very same high standards of our award winning customer service and professional advice that you truly deserve.

.

.

What can Brides Up North expect when they come in for an appointment?

.

To be totally and utterly spoilt! We love our gowns and we love our brides and we would never, ever sell a gown to a bride if it didn’t suit them. Our award winning reputation walks down the aisle with every one of our brides, which is why we have created an oasis of calm in luxurious surroundings. We allow two hours for your first appointment with a comfortable seating area for your mum and/or best friend who we also love to spoil! At Elegance we guarantee you will have a truly memorable and enjoyable bridal experience that you will treasure forever and we always get the bubbly out to celebrate when ‘the one’ has been discovered as well as providing FREE Wedding Dress Insurance with every gown sold.

.

.

What is your current favourite gown that you stock and why?

.

Looking around our collection there isn’t one gown that I can say is my one favourite, I love them all and brides always comment on what a varied and beautiful collection we have.  They often pick so many to try on, which proves that we know what brides are looking for.

.

.

Is there a particular style of dress that is popular with your brides at the moment?

.

No, we attract such a varied range of bride from all age ranges, expectations and walks of life that we don’t have a particular style that everyone is choosing and we are always updating our collection with new styles, however we have sold a few more lace gowns since the Royal Wedding.

.

.

How does Elegance Bridal Studio provide a superior experience to other wedding dress boutiques?

.

When you visit Elegance Bridal Studio you will discover the most beautiful gowns in the world whilst experiencing our famous award winning northern hospitality. I am a total perfectionist and our standards are very high which acts as a guarantee to any future brides that we are the best and you will look amazing.

.

We have a few business awards under our belt for providing a service of excellence that are all proudly on display, giving brides total confidence when placing the dress of their dreams safely in our hands.

.

We also offer an in-house alteration service by our highly skilled seamstress who can make bridesmaid dresses and mother of the bride outfits. A bridal dressing service is offered as an optional extra: we will dress the bride and her maids on her wedding day to ensure total perfection. We also offer a gown cleaning and preservation service, so after the wedding day brides can leave their gown with us and when they return from their honeymoon, their gown will be cleaned and packed within a beautiful wedding dress box that can be treasured forever.

.

.

Do you stock Bridesmaid Dresses?

.

We don’t sell an off the peg collection of bridesmaid dresses, but our seamstress can make bridesmaid dresses to order which is proving to be a very popular service.

.

.

What about Menswear?

.

Our menswear department Sensational Formal Hire is located within the same building and is totally separate from our boutique, so that the groom can have the same one to one service by appointment only within an all male environment. Sensational Formal Hire is owned and operated by my husband John Carr and you will find suits to hire by the award winning Cameron Ross whilst also a range of suits to buy is also available. Sensational Formal Hire have just won a National Award ‘Best Wedding Menswear Supplier’ in the 2012 Wedding Industry Awards, which is an award that we are all totally proud of and is a cast iron guarantee of our high standards and of course the award winning customer service that every customer receives.

.

.

Are you married?

.

We were married on the 1st June 2006 in Cyprus.  I wore an a-line angel satin gown with a very long train in a light gold colour which looked fantastic on our beach photos.   John didn’t have his business then so he wore some linen trousers with a white shirt, waistcoat & scrunchie tie. We are planning to re-new our vows in a few years time and I cannot wait to choose another gown from our fabulous collection!

.

Suited & Booted! Supplier Showcase: Sensational Formal Hire

May 10th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

I’m recovering after an excellent night at the Brides Up North Tweet Up North East yesterday evening – more on this later – but before we move on a  massive thank you to the wonderful North East wedding industry for coming out in force and making it so special.  You are absolute stars!

.

.

More from the Limelight Hire Photobooth shortly…

.

.

After the success of last night’s event, and a super inspiring meeting this morning about a future very special project for the Brides Up North brand, I feel ready to take on the World! (See, I haven’t just been sleeping off a hangover!).

.

It’s onwards and upwards today as we meet another star, Brides Up North Featured Supplier John of Sensational Formal Hire, to get those grooms suited and booted.

.

.   Sensational Formal Hire

.

.

When did Sensational Formal Hire open?

.

We opened in June 2009. I have a varied, colourful background that has always been based on excellent people skills. I have worked for transport companies, oil companies, ran social clubs and been a full time Union Official. I have at times managed up to 75 petrol tanker drivers and done things others would not believe. My wife at Elegance Bridal Studio, Barnsley had planted the seed around five years ago, however until 2009 I had visions of Mr Grace and "I’m Free" and did not fancy the opportunity.

.

.

What lines of menswear do you stock?

.

I stock Cameron Ross Menswear and Highlandwear which are the hire products and I sell suits by Torre and Lloyd Atree & Smith. The shoes I sell are by Loake, however they are sold to order at a Barnsley price. Cameron Ross are the market leaders in hirewear and cannot be beaten on quality in my opinion. The suits I sell are good quality, value for money and start from £140.

.

Accessories wise, I stock waistcoats, ruches, ties, dickie’s, cumberbunds and cufflinks. I pride myself on being able to offer any colour ruche to compliment the bride’s colour theme. I also do a great line in Groom, Best Man, Father of the Bride and so on matching cufflinks and socks, which my customers enjoy at a discounted rate.

.

.

Sensational Formal Hire   Sensational Formal Hire

.

.

We hear that won an award recently?

.

Yes I did, it was a great honour bestowed upon me and I am now officially the best at what I do. I won the Best Wedding Menswear Supplier Award for the North East and the whole of England at this year’s Wedding Industry Awards. However, my feet are firmly on the ground and I know I have only set the standard.  I do intend to raise it though. As the award was based on customer feedback, what my customers had to say was not only invaluable to the judges, but more importantly invaluable to me. There were some great comments, I did not realise the difference I make to peoples’ weddings. All feedback has been evaluated appropriately and has been acted upon.

.

.

Where are you based?  What if a member of the wedding party lives elsewhere?

.

I am based in Barnsley, which surprisingly is in the centre of the country. I am in a town centre location 50 yards from the Transport Interchange. If members of the wedding party live in other areas they too can be supplied using Cameron Ross’ Roaming Wearer service. I have supplied customers who have sent their details from Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Ireland, Dubai, Hong Kong and Spain. I have supplied suits for weddings in Poland, Malta and Cyprus.

.

.

What about the price?

.

As I deal in quality and excellent customer service, I am not the cheapest. However, why chance your photographs being ruined for the sake of an extra £10 per suit? Prices are based upon a customer’s individual requirements and tailored to their needs.

.

.

Sensational Formal Hire

.

.

Do we need an appointment?

.

Yes, I work by appointment only. This is due to there only being me here and more importantly the customer then has my undivided attention during their initial two hour appointment. I offer appointments Tuesday to Saturday until 8pm and Sundays if the need arises. As most of my customers work, evenings and Saturdays do get booked quickly.

.

.

What can brides and grooms who come to visit your showroom expect?

.

They can expect to receive the friendliest and warmest Northern welcome available. They will be invited to sit down and then be offered refreshment (also Northern style). Everything will be explained, I shall be attentive to their needs and offer honest and expert advice. I offer a stress free and no nonsense approach that cannot be matched.  Enjoying themselves is all part of the experience.

.

The feedback I receive is that I am a breath of fresh air within the Industry and I don’t just get the one time customer, my grooms all return time and time again to hire suits for other social occasions such as a day at the races, so that they can again enjoy my famous “Sensational Service”.  Sensational Formal Hire is only three years old in June and the amount of recommendations I receive from my customers proves that I genuinely care that my customers look their best on their big day.

.

.

Are any styles particularly popular?

.

Some outfits, styles and colours look better on some than others. I would not suggest a 4 foot 6, 15 stone man to order a tailcoat outfit and I would not put someone in something if it did not suit them or look right. I do not have a particular type of customer, most are honest, straightforward, uncomplicated northerners, who appreciate the service that I strive to provide.  In conclusion, my favourite look is what will look best on the groom and all groom’s are different.  Navy and Silver are fashionable at the moment, as is any form of Grey.

.

.

Sensational Formal Hire

.

.

Are you married?

.

Yes I am married, we got married in Cyprus in June 2006 and there was a heat wave! I was married in a pair of linen trousers, a cotton shirt and a silk waistcoat with matching ruche. When I do it again (we are to renew our vows in 2016) I shall wear sun factor 75 and the biggest hat I can find! Seriously though, the most lightweight trousers available, another 100% cotton shirt and whatever else my wife wants me to put on.

.

.

How can wedding blog readers get in touch with you?
