A Winter Walk: A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Emma & Jonathan

February 6th, 2013 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

Wedding In Yorkshire by Richard Wynn-Davies

.

.

As a , I get the privilege of sharing a lot of couple’s most special of days – each different, each lovely.  Friends often ask me if I have favourites.  Of course there are styles I prefer, dresses I lust for and shoes that I sometimes even track down and buy (ahem!)…  but my very favourite celebrations are always the ones where the love shines through.

.

Cheesy, right?  Ah, so sue me.

.

Emma and Jonathan’s Real Wedding by Brides Up North Featured Supplier Richard Wynn Davies is one of those.  Sure, they had a cute theme and a stunning venue, but I didn’t really notice all of that -  I was blinded by their smiles.

.

Which is exactly as it should be.

Oulton Hall Wedding by Richard Wynn Davies

Emma says:  Jonathan asked me to marry him on 25th August 2010.   It was a big surprise, champagne and sandwiches(!), at the summit of Sca Fell Pike (the highest mountain in England) as part of a trip with our closest friends to the Lake District. Very romantic indeed.

.

We tied the knot on 23rd December 2012 at St. James Parish Church, Manston, Leeds with the reception was Oulton Hall, Rothwell.

The church was my childhood church, and her parents still have strong connections there.  We fell in love with Oulton Hall from the moment we walked into the entrance. It was the perfect setting for a winter wedding.  We chose a white and silver theme, with hints of brown pine cones.

My dress was a white duchess satin gown, designed by Jonathan and I. I then made the dress with my mum, and I did the holly leaf embroidery on the top of my dress by hand which took a long (!) time. My mum handmade every one of the thirty or so buttons and button loops which made a statement down the back of my dress. The final stitches were put in the dress the night before the wedding… but it was finished – something which at times seemed an impossible goal.

.

My veil was very vintage. It was my mum’s from my parents’ wedding 28 years ago, and it was still perfectly white. It was definitely my something old, and technically borrowed!

.

My satin and lace vintage style shoes were from Wedding Belles Of Otley. And my wintery hair-clip was from Glitzy Secrets.

Peta Franklin, a small independent hairdresser in Crossgates, did my beautiful hair.

Having designed my dress, we then designed and made the bridesmaid dresses (making adaptations from a basic pattern). The bridesmaid dresses were in a silver dupion satin, with a mini-version being made for the flower-girl.

.

We hand-made all nine of the gentleman’s waistcoats, ties and pocket squares from Vogue Patterns.

To make the suits was a slight step too far (though it was considered!) and these were hired from Moss Bros.

.

.

.

.

We also hired a 1947 Albion Vintage Coach from Yesteryear Vintage Vehicles which was superb. The staff were incredibly helpful and even managed to get our less able guests onto the coach.

Every single moment was perfect from the very first moment waking up to sunshine to finally collapsing in a super-king size bed in the honeymoon suite.  Our favourite moment has to be actually getting married, and finally becoming Mr & Mrs. It was so intimate-just beautiful.

We baked 200 mince pies the day before the wedding to give to our guests after the marriage service.

We sourced pine cones from Otley Chevin and Temple Newsam Park, to hand make my pine cone bouquet. We had to wash and dry hundreds of pine cones to find the best ones. Then they were all glitter sprayed and wired to form the bouquet. It looked rather amazing if I do say so myself.

Our photographer was the amazing Richard Wynn-Davies and his lovely wife Caroline, who captured our day perfectly.

Apart from all the sewing projects, we designed all our own table decorations, including sourcing fallen wood from a local forest, and cutting it into discs to form the table centre pieces. These then had a candle on, with a handmade, and hand collected, pine cone wreath surrounding them.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Jonathan hand-drew from an OS map our table plan, which was the map of Sca Fell Pike where we got engaged. We then used the places on our walk for the table names.

.

We designed all our own wedding invitations, menu cards, and order’s of service using my hand drawn design.

We are anything but a traditional couple, as you may have already gathered. Instead of a DJ, we had a pub style quiz, with a side order of cheese and biscuits, a few beers and wedding cake, organised by Jonathan’s brother.

.

Even more unusual was a game of Mr and Mrs, again devised by Jonathan’s brother. Very embarrassing, but great fun for all. Thankfully almost every one of our answers matched. The Groomsmen played live music for the first dance and Jonathan joined in once his dancing duties were fulfilled.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Jonathan planned a surprise honeymoon, and it did remain a surprise until we arrived outside our destination. We went to a small family run restaurant, with rooms, hotel in Sowerby, Thirsk called ‘Oswalds’ for Christmas period.

.

The service was absolutely fantastic, and we felt so special. Being greeted with champagne and strawberries, then sitting by the Christmas tree to open our wedding cards & presents was so special.  The food was out of this world, and we cannot wait to go back again soon.

.

.

.

.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to start planning early, and be prepared to change your mind. Prioritise the things that will make your wedding day special to you, and decide the things that you can compromise on.

Congratulations Emma & Jonathan!

Real Wedding Recap 2012: Glittering Romance: A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Amy & Chris

December 25th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Over the festive period I’ll be recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy…

.

.

A glittering beauty to welcome Christmas in.

.

We first met gorgeous bride Amy and her husband Chris back in November last year on these pages, when I featured their intimate pre-wedding “Limited Collection” shoot by Cat Hepple Photography.  Now they are back to share their even more beautiful Real Wedding images – again by the lovely Cat Hepple – with us.  What a pleasure!  Amy and Chris’ wedding day is a triple whammy of stylish, chic and romantic, which all adds up to an utterly stunning celebration.

Amy says:  Chris asked me to marry him at home on Christmas Morning 2010 and we tied the knot on 17th August 2012 at St John’s Church Oulton then Oulton Hall, Leeds.

Oulton Hall is just around the corner from our house, Chris plays golf there most weekends every weekend and because it’s so close it meant it was accessible for all our friends and family, which was important to us that they could all get there hassle free, although my Momma T might disagree, they flew in from Arkansas!

.

I drive past the church and Oulton Hall every day on my way to and from work and I have to admit, it is beautiful, it was a great venue. The event staff on the day were fantastic, despite a couple of power cuts and it scrubbed up nicely with the help of some amazing suppliers! I will hold Oulton Hall fondly in my heart, full of happy memories.

I read blogs religiously and scrapbooked and tumblr’d for months.  I knew what I wanted but I wouldn’t call it a theme!  We opted for a colour scheme of greens and whites.

.

Jo Bilham did my makeup and Kizzy at Charisma Bridal did my hair.

I tried on a dozen dresses (around 50 to be more specific), in a dozen different stores spread across Yorkshire. I never really fell in love with any of them. So I started researching Yorkshire designers, I found James Steward Couture and the rest is a fairy-tale.

.

From the first meeting with James I felt like he got me, he knew exactly the look I wanted to achieve and had no problems executing it, he is beyond words talented. We started the dress fittings and I felt like Cinderella, minus the bluebirds and the singing mice!  It was so exciting, starting with calico and pins to the final fittings when I was stepping into the finished silk dress we had been creating for nine months, it was perfect, it still makes me want to cry, it was and still is (excluding the mucky hem and fake bake smudges) the most beautiful dress I have ever worn. I could genuinely swoon about my dress and about James all day long.

.

My shoes were Jimmy Choo, the last pair in the country in my size, it was obviously fate!

.

HF Couture created my stunning couture hairpiece.

My grown up bridesmaids also wore James Steward Couture whilst the younger and flower girls were in Topshop and Tigerlily.  Chris and his groomsmen wore Slaters suits & James Steward Couture cravats.

.

.

Cat Hepple Photography

.

.

Helen at Twigs in Barwick has been a friend of my Mum’s for years and I always knew it would be Helen that did my wedding flowers, long before I knew who my husband was!  I wanted a collection of all my favourite flowers, most importantly orchids, hydrangeas, freesias, avalanche roses and lots of greenery. I wasn’t specific apart from to stick to whites and greens and let Helen do her thing, they turned out beautifully, I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

We had Trio Vivo by The Event Music Company booked for the church ceremony right through the wedding breakfast with the addition of a surprise as we left the church.  Chris and I watch Love Actually every Christmas, it’s a little tradition we have, so I knew I had to recreate the wedding scene.

.

Chris Hilton at Event Music pulled it off seamlessly, planting a singer and two extra musicians amongst our guests, so as we were leaving the church they started playing ‘All You Need Is Love’, trumpet, singer and all, it was fabulous, I just wish we could have done a second walk out the church so I could have listened to them longer!

Thierry and Rebecca at Dumouchel are great friends of ours and gifted us our stunning cakes as a wedding present – I’m a very lucky girl.

.

We had a macaroon tower, with custom blended green; lavender, rose and white chocolate macaroons;

a stunning croquembouche with a mixture of chocolate ganache and crème patisserie filling and a traditional iced and tiered fruit cake.  They were so delicious and looked amazing.

.

They were all themed together with the addition of the hydrangea petals and the most beautiful edible paper butterflies that came from SugarRobot in California via Etsy.

We had a custom monogram designed and used it on the invites, which were made by Cutture, fabulous laser etched mirrors, on the order of service and the table plan.

.

Our table plan and the numbers were created by Chris and an amazing local glass supplier, it was his baby, he’s very proud of it!

.
The monogrammed butterflies were also a favourite of mine.

I loved every second of the day.  In particular, the speeches were pretty epic and our last dance was quite special.

In the evening we used a band called The Wedding Smashers.  Max smashed it, everyone danced till they dropped, my Choos were discarded and I lost all bridal elegance winding to Bobby Brown and I can vividly remember bouncing about the dance floor to Katy Perry’s Firework with all my girls, I was deliriously happy. Our last dance was All You Need Is Love, it was the way we started our party and the way we finished it. Happy smiley people!

After the wedding we honeymooned in the Maldives at Lily Beach. The most perfect place on earth.

My top tips for other Brides Up North would be to do whatever you want to do, don’t be led by other people’s opinions or what’s ‘on trend’. Don’t get stressed by family politics, if they love you enough they’ll let it drop for just one day!  Enjoy every second of the day! Spend the biggest chunk of your budget on a really amazing photographer: it’s worth every penny.

Deck the Hall, A Real Wedding – Sarah & Darren

December 13th, 2010 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Brides Up North Featured Supplier and The Bridal Mag wedding photographer of the year 2010 Adele Haywood of Blue Lights Photography sent me this beautiful Real Wedding in a perfect Yorkshire setting, Oulton Hall.

.

Sarah and Darren

.

Over to Blue Lights Photography: I met Sarah and Darren at The Yorkshire Wedding Show in Feb 2010 at
Savilles Hall, Leeds. It was such a snowy day, and they had travelled over from Manchester for the Bridal Fayre. They weren’t disappointed  and also booked me on the day.

.
Neither Sarah or Darren actually like their photographs taking, so they were happy to not look at the camera, and to let me "take their  photographs" without them being too highly posed.

.
The Wedding Ceremony started at 4pm at Oulton Hall, Leeds with a sit down meal afterwards going into drinks in the evening.

A lot of family had travelled from all over the country, and a lot were travelling back in the early hours of the morning. No evening reception was held, just drinks in the back of the room – a fabulously chilled out affair.

The Staff at Oulton Hall were very accommodating for both the couple and me.  I also did their Pre-Wedding Shoot at the venue for their guest signed framed print instead of a guestbook.
