Here at Brides Up north HQ we like to see things doing things differently, so when we heard about today’s couple’s ‘back-to-front’ wedding, we were intrigued to find out more.
With guests coming from near and far to celebrate their special day, bride and groom Colette and Peter, were keen for their guests to mix up, get to know each other and have fun. To assist, Colette and Peter planned a tea, scone and drinks reception, games, speeches and the meal all to take place before the ceremony – so come the main event and party that followed, all were totally at ease and well acquainted. Guys, we like your thinking – this could catch on!

colette says: We got engaged on my birthday, 20th September, in 2014. Peter took me for a lovely lunch at a beach resort hotel in Ystad Sweden. After some food and wine we went for a walk along the beach and next thing he was down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes immediately.
Our legal wedding date was 16th May 2015. We got married at City Hall in Sweden, where we both live, when I was heavily pregnant. Although we were technically married I didn’t want to give up my dream wedding and dress so we decided to have a proper wedding and party the following year. The exact date was already taken at the venue so we decided to have it a week before. Now we can have two wedding anniversaries to celebrate!
I’m from Billingham in Teesside and so we had our UK wedding in the North East at Newton Hall in Northumberland. We chose the venue because we felt it was a romantic yet quirky venue with its modern and traditional twists, which suited our personalities perfectly. As we had friends and family coming from Sweden, Denmark and the UK, the venue’s good transport links to nearby airports and great accommodation for our guests was also a plus point.
The theme of the wedding was chic, romantic and fairy-tale. I picked this theme because I wanted my wedding to be my idea of a perfect wedding. I wanted to feel like a princess so I wanted a big dress, pink and sparkles but wanted it to be romantic and chic also.
We did our wedding sort of back-to-front so we had guests arrive at 1pm for tea and scones, then at 2pm a cocktail reception with Pimms and popcorn, at 3pm we had the speeches and sit down meal, at 6pm I went to change into my second dress, at 7pm the ceremony took place outside and then at 8pm we had the evening party with a live band.
We thought a back-to-front wedding would be a good idea to mix the wedding up a bit as we were already married we wanted it to be fun and for our guests to be relaxed and in good spirits. Also many of our guests hadn’t met each other before due to being from different countries so having the games and the speeches and meal first enabled them to get to know each other.

This morning we’re heading to the North East to relive the stunning wedding day of Lerina and Joelif.
Having fallen head over heels for The Grand Hotel in Tynemouth, Brides Up North reader Lerina set about organising a fun and fancy wedding in just six months! Certainly no mean feat but she pulled it off perfectly with a big day full of smiles, tears and laughter, as well as lots of pretty hearts and flowers. Who run the world? Girls!

lerina says: We got engaged the day after my birthday last year. Joelif decided that we should have a wonder into Tynemouth, where we live, for some food. We went down to Riley’s Fish Shack which is on King Edwards’s beach. It was a lovely bright, crisp afternoon. We had a hot chocolate and fresh grilled lobster salad whilst we sat overlooking the beach. When we finished, we walked back up the stairs from the beach when Joelif suddenly stopped and got down on one knee and produced a red ring box. He opened it and there was the biggest diamond ring inside. My jaw almost hit the round. He asked if I would marry him and I instantly said yes. He put the ring on my finger then was quick to tell me it wasn’t a real diamond, he’d decided that we could go ring shopping together as he knows I’m fussy with jewellery. After that we went to one of our favourite bars and sat outside in the sun drinking champagne to celebrate. I then called my family to tell them the exciting news! Just over a month later we had our engagement party at a local bar/bistro called The Sandpiper. It was a fantastic night.
Our wedding date was 7th May 2016, exactly 15-and-a-half years to the exact date that we first got together.
We got married at The Grand Hotel in Tynemouth, which is just a five-minute drive from our house. The Grand was the last venue we looked at as we had been guests at a number of our friends’ wedding there and didn’t think it would feel special if we held our own wedding there. However on the day that we attended an open event there we instantly felt excited about it. The venue had been refurbished since we had last been. It was so much brighter and fresher and had new furniture in the bar area. The ceremony room looked stunning, so classy and exactly what we wanted. When we went up the grand stairs to the main room where the wedding breakfast takes place, it over looks Tynemouth Longsands beach and it just took our breath away. Instantly we knew that we had found our venue. We thought we would enquire about availability or late summer 2016, however the latest summer date was 7th May so we immediately went for it and paid the deposit. This gave us just six months to plan everything.
We wanted the style of the wedding to reflect the venue, which is grand, classy and romantic, but at the same time, we wanted the wedding to be fun and relaxed to match our personalities as a couple.

Well hello there readers, after a small blogging break we’re back, fired up and ready to go! To get things started we’re sharing this stunning rustic wedding, which took place at one of our Dream Venues, the gorgeous Healey Barn.
Letting the gorgeous building speak for itself, today’s bride and groom kept the décor simple with subtle nods to the season in their colour palette and flower choices. All in all a very pretty day featuring tears, smiles, kisses and laughter!

kay says: We got engaged in summer 2014, when we were on our ‘babymoon’ in Murcia. We went for a lovely romantic meal and half way through Neal got down on one knee and popped the question with the most beautiful ring – of course, I said yes. As we have always wanted a spring wedding we set the date for 18th March 2016.
Our chosen venue was Healey Barn in Riding Mill, Northumberland. As soon as we saw it we fell in love with the place. It is beautiful and was the perfect size for the wedding we wanted.
As the barn is so beautiful as it is there was no real need for us to ‘style’ or ‘theme’ the wedding and so our aim was purely to create a relaxed atmosphere for everyone. For the colour scheme we chose ‘happy’ spring colours as a nod to the season.
I wore a lovely fishtail style dress by Mori Lee, which I bought from a boutique called Brides Dream. I added a belt, for just a touch of sparkle, and wore cobalt blue heels as my something blue. Diva Dust then took care of mine and the bridesmaids’ makeup on the day of the wedding. Everyone looked beautiful.

This morning’s real wedding couple decided to make to plan a wedding that was pretty and personal rather than shaping it around one set theme.
The result is a very natural and romantic big day that’s brimming with beautiful elements; from the fairy tale style venue to the gorgeous blooms and delicate decor, this one has it all!

wendy says: We got engaged on the banks of Loch Lomond in February 2013. I’m from Helensburgh, near Loch Lomond and I love boats so Dave arranged for us to go on a boat tour for my birthday. After a beautiful, if slightly chilly, trip around the loch and a whisky to calm the nerves, Dave got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
Our wedding date was Saturday 6th June 2015. As we were getting married outside we wanted to choose date where we might have slightly less chance of getting rain.
We got married and had our reception at The Treehouse in Alnwick Gardens. We looked at a number of venues in and around my hometown and felt they were far too formal. I then started looking online for unusual wedding venues and came across the Treehouse. As soon as we walked up its walkway we knew we had found the right place; it’s so naturally beautiful, the perfect size and adorned with fairy lights!

This afternoon on the blog we’re thrilled to introduce another of our very talented Brides Up North Sponsors, Paul of Paul Liddement Wedding Stories.
As the name of his business suggests, Paul is very much about getting to know his clients and telling their individual love stories through his images on their big day.
Looking at his work it’s clear to see that Paul’s personable approach pays off as couples relax in front of the lens and their genuine feelings for each other shine through. What’s more, Mr Liddement is also a master at capturing guests’ emotions and all the little details that bring the whole story together.
Now let’s hear from the main man himself about his work (and passion)…
How did you get into wedding photography?
paul says: I have a teaching background as a professionally qualified teacher, I taught media studies to 13 to18-year-olds as well photography classes. Having this background is essential to my work as I have to understand individuals’ needs and direct large groups of people.
I began dabbling in the dark room in 1998, and in 2006 I shot my first wedding. My professional company was set up in 2012 due to demand. One thing for sure about this game is, you can’t teach – art and creative styles is what sets photographers apart.
Why did you want to do wedding photography specifically?
I think it ticks a lot of boxes for me. I get to meet great people, travel the world, see fantastic venues and be amongst the loved up. Seeing two people’s connection come together in the setting of their choice is fascinating to me, the way they harmonise themselves and can be best of themselves at that moment in time is priceless.
What is your favourite thing about being a wedding photographer?
My favourite thing about my work is that I have a lot of creative freedom, so I can create people’s wedding stories the way they want them to be told and the way that I see them.
How do you get couples to relax on the day?
The best way to keep a couple relaxed is to a. keep your eye on all of the events and understand people’s needs and the structure of the day. b. be everybody’s best friend. Think like a person of action, act like a person of thought. Telling a wedding story requires a very personal approach.
Any advice to brides who don’t like to have their picture taken?
All brides are beautiful, which is why they are getting married. Understanding a bride’s feelings, their little traits, their little smiles and their little quirks should be the aim of the photography. Everyone takes a naturally good picture if you understand them.
What sort of makeup should a bride wear to look great in her pictures?
I think enough to complement a skin texture to keep it looking soft, as well as keeping a little vibrancy to catch the eye, but not too much.
Anything to avoid which might look bad in the wedding pictures?
Your wedding is about looking your best because not only is it the best day of your life, but it is the day you will always reflect and admire the most. Dress so you have some physical flexibility on the day and so you look comfortable in your images.
Which celebrity wedding would you most like to photograph and why?
My style is classy, creative and fun, so it is a perfect fit for a creative celebrity wedding, such as an actor, comedian or singer. I couldn’t put my finger on who because I’m too diverse.
Any really memorable weddings that you have captured?
I will always have a special place in my heart for my New York wedding. I had never been there before and we covered so much stuff together with the couple, the fact that I was taking pictures was kind of bonus. We toured the charm of Central Park’s many locations and vibrant entertainers and flew over Manhattan via helicopter and sailed by the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge by night which was breathtakingly romantic. We finished the wedding with a quirky, drunken trip to Times Square for some great fun with the tourists. An unforgettable experience.
Tell us about your wedding day?
My day was very traditional and for the first time I understood what it was like being the one getting married and afterwards I was able to reflect on what my requirements were. This was instrumental to my ‘wedding stories’ approach of my own business as I look at each wedding as if I’m in the clients’ shoes.
Any funny stories to share?
Plenty, but I have a non-disclosure policy (smiley face).
What sets you apart from other wedding photographers?
I don’t really see myself as having any competition and that’s not in an arrogant sense, as there are some remarkable craftspeople out there. But people are coming to me for my work and my approach to their day, which comes back to what I describe as art. I see myself as an artist and what sets me apart is that my clients have picked me because they love what I do.
What can a couple who book you expect on the day?
I’d say 40% storytelling, 20% friendship, 20% creativity and 20% documenting.
What is included in your ‘package’?
My work is very individual, so choosing me for your wedding isn’t simply about packages, it’s about hiring an artist. I tend to cover whole days only though.
Can you give us an idea on price?
My pricing is very reasonable, I currently charge £1325 for a full day and I am mostly fully booked for 2016. My work is tailor made and I am one of your guests for the day.

We just love the simplicity of today’s real wedding.
It’s not always about the most extravagant decor, the biggest cake or the most flamboyant flowers (though we do adore details) but simply about the love the bride and groom have for one another.
Paul and Marie’s big day was brimming with elegance but without being OTT thanks to a stunning choice of venue, attractive attire and a pretty colour palette.
We are also totally crushing on all the natural outdoor shots, especially the ones with the deer! Super classy!

paul says: I proposed to Marie on her birthday while we were staying in a cottage in the Lake District. I gave her a bunch of silly presents and a wax jacket that she really wanted and I’d put an envelope inside the pocket containing a card asking her to marry me. When she opened it the envelope fell out and she didn’t notice it so I had to grab the card quickly and hand it to her once she’d sat down again. She opened the card and I got on one knee.
Our wedding was on 20th June, 2015. We booked this date as it seemed far enough away at time of booking to be able to get everything done and we thought the weather should be ok at this time of year.
Both our ceremony and reception were held at Whitworth Hall, Spennymoor. We chose the venue for its location, grounds and layout. Also due to the feeling we got when we visited it.
We didn’t have a cast iron ‘theme’ but we were working from the vintage end of things, not in a way which restricted us, but that merely gave the appearance of wedding continuity. Examples of this could be seen in our table names and seating plan as they used the same text fonts and floral illustrations as on all of our other stationery, but to add a little personal touch we named the tables after locations from the Lord of the Ring books, which we love. We also went for a vintage mute colour scheme. So overall, vintage meets middle earth subtly.
Marie wore the Leigh dress designed by Sophia Tolli, which she bought from Elizabeth George in Middlesbrough. On the wedding day her hair was done by her sister Stacy and her makeup was done by her sister Dawn. Marie looked beautiful so I think it would be fair to say we would recommend her sisters.
I wore a conventionally cut grey suit with a white shirt and silver tie. These were hired from Troughear Suit Hire, Durham. The night before the wedding I had a hot towel shave at Guappo Hair Design in Shotton. It was fantastic and helped to relax me – I’d definitely recommend this to other grooms.
The bridesmaids’ dresses were all from Debenhams.
As a photographer myself, I was very picky as to who I would pick to capture our day. After some time researching, we chose Paul Liddement because of his style and the obvious quality of his work but mostly because of his approach and the fact that we felt comfortable with him.
On the wedding day Paul was relaxed, focused and very well prepared. He managed to take lots of photographs that we were completely unaware of and seemed very good at catching that moment when you are more yourself. He also fitted in with the guests and spent time getting them at ease with him. We were blown away by our wedding images when we received them. We had high expectations based on the quality of our engagement shoot but the wedding photos far exceeded our expectations and managed to put an extra shine on an already magical day.
Marie arrived at Whitworth Hall buy classic car, along with her maid of honour and bridesmaids who travelled in a separate car, both of which were hired form Classic Wedding Cars, Durham.
We designed and made all of the wedding stationery ourselves. A time consuming process as we wanted to get it just right and put a lot of thought into it, but it was the right thing to do as we ended up with exactly what we wanted and it made the wedding more personal. We are immensely proud of the results.
In terms of flowers, Marie and her bridesmaids had vintage style bouquets and we had corsages for the mothers, female grandparents and the guests who did readings. The groom, best man, ushers, fathers, grandfather and all the male partners of the bridal party then had matching button holes. All were supplied by Elvet Flowers, Durham.
For decoration, we had another small arrangement of flowers on the top table also supplied by Elvet Flowers, Durham. We also had a miniature handmade birdcage made from pages of a book, which was positioned in the middle of the top table. This was made by a friend of ours, Gillian.
All the other tables at the reception had a vintage bird cage on them, which were put together by Marie and her sister Dawn (although myself and my brother-in-law Jona did put one together each and I think these were the best!) We purchased the materials from a variety of sources including Country Baskets, Home Bargains and eBay.
We handmade all of our favours; historically accurate 13th Century medieval coins for the men and angel charms for the ladies.
Our wedding cake was a three tiered spice cake. It had a very subtle vintage rose colour icing, with a lace like pattern piped down one side (as if a doily had been draped down on side). There was also an arrangement of icing sugar flowers on the third tier. The cake was made locally by a lady called Vicky who makes them more as a hobby than a business.
As a special treat we also had a sweetie table, which we put together ourselves. The sweets were bought at B&M and Home Bargains, which is where we also got the giant martini/wine glasses and other glass bowls from that held the sweets.
To fill the lull period after the meal (while the venue staff rearranged the room for the evening do) we arranged for the medieval re-enactment group The Dawn of Chivalry, of which I’m a member, to put on a combat display for our guests in the venue’s grounds. We chose this as it was something a bit different & again made the wedding more personal to us. For the evening do we had the venue supplied disco, during which my brother-in-law managed to take on a guest DJ spot much to everyone’s (apart from the actual DJ’s) amusement.
Following our wedding we would definitely recommend Whitworth Hall to others. The venue was brilliant, they were very accommodating and great on the day! The venue has plenty of space for people to mill around and relax and it is possible to find a quiet corner if you need some space providing you are not either the bride or groom, in which case you won’t have time to catch your thoughts! It lends itself very well to weddings as the ceremony room is very tasteful and has plenty of scope for some lovely photo locations without ever having to go too far from your guests.
Looking back, my favourite part of the day was the moment I first saw my wife-to-be in her dress. I fell in love all over again and then couldn’t see anyone but her.
We have not yet been on our honeymoon yet as we are planning to go to New Zealand (see Lord of the Rings sneaking in again) and it is currently winter there.
Our top tip for other Brides (and grooms) Up North would be to set a realistic budget then be honest with yourself and really set an actually realistic budget. Look at what you can actually afford and what you really feel is absolutely important. This will help you strip away a lot of the gimmicky, frivolous I wants.
We paid for the majority of the wedding ourselves by saving up and doing over time at work, but we also had some very generous gifts from family members. All in all it’s a party, so look at it as such – people are there for you and not what is on the tables or festooned around the room.
