Super Fly! A Real Wedding In North Wales – Eleanor & Paul

February 26th, 2013 | Julia Braime

I should probably count my blessings that it isn’t sleeting, but I couldn’t let another dull, grey Tuesday finish without bringing you another beautiful Real Wedding

.

As it turns out, I had something rather special up my sleeve all along.  Eleanor and Paul’s big day (planned to perfection by Brides Up North Featured Supplier, Andrea of Fabulous Day) is cool, colourful, under canvas and full of surprise details.  Look out overhead!  And I say, let the sun shine!

Eleanor says:  Paul asked me to marry him in January 2012 in Central Park in New York and we were married on 15th September 2012 at  Llanasa Church in North Wales and then had the reception in the grounds of my family home “Bryngwyn” in Axton, North Wales.

.

.

Photography by Helen Venables

.

.

Three generations of my family have grown up at Bryngwyn and it’s a place that holds so many special memories. We didn’t look at any other wedding venues – there wasn’t really any question as to where we would have the reception – we were just really lucky that my parents were so accommodating!

.

However the idea of traditional ‘white marquee’ wedding really did not appeal – for us it was too formal and restrictive. As soon as we found Event In A Tent and their teepees we knew we’d found the perfect solution as they were original, unique, fitted in with the look of the farm and suited our personalities.

We really wanted to make a good first impression! We worked with Design Your Day who helped us deliver really unique wedding stationery. Paul is a pilot, with a lifelong obsession with planes so on Design Your Day’s suggestion we adopted the concept of ‘travel’ as our theme. The wedding invites were printed on luggage labels, with personalised photomontage postcards as RSVPs. We also used a small plane motif within the design which was then incorporated into the rest of the wedding stationary. We bound the invites and RSVP cards with specially designed ‘All you need is love’ cotton ribbon. This tag line also had wider connotations for us given that we met in Liverpool and love the Beatles and we incorporated it in other parts of the day. We also included the luggage tags within our table plan.

.

.

Photography by Helen Venables

.

.

We had no specific colour scheme- the one thing we didn’t want was uniformity. We wanted it to look seasonal – with all the colours reflecting the country location.

.

.

Photography by Helen Venables

.

.

My dress was lace and off the shoulder and I got it from Cheshire Brides in Frodsham. I really struggled to find a dress, however all the clichés were true, and when I saw my dress I fell in love with it!

.

The bridesmaids wore dresses from Maids to Measure. My bridesmaids were a range of shapes and sizes and I wanted everyone to feel comfortable in their dresses – I chose the colour and then, together with Maids to Measure, everyone designed their own dresses. Each dress was then handmade and tailored to them. They looked great! The groomsmen hired their suits from Swarbricks in Manchester. The range of stock they held made sure that everyone’s suits all fitted perfectly!

.

.

.

.

I carried sunflowers, together with mixed herbs and lavender by David Wayman Flowers – with the bridesmaids carrying smaller versions. Paul went for a mixed herb button hole. We also decorate the church with lots of sunflowers and at the reception we had lots of wild flowers throughout the tables.

.

.

.

.

For both of us, saying our vows were a really special moment. Also the fact that we had both organised surprises for the other throughout the day was really special.  Originally we had planned to use friends’ cars as wedding transport. However, unbeknown to me, Paul arranged for a horse and carriage to transport me to and from the church. This was a childhood dream and a complete surprise (and created lots of tears)!

Unbeknown to Paul and all the guests, I arranged for an aerobatic display at the reception by Mark Jefferies Air Displays – which was incredible. Everyone was in complete awe of the stunts by the reigning European aerobatic champion. We later heard that it brought traffic to a standstill over 10 miles away!

Helen Venables was our amazing photographer and we also had a wedding film created for us by Lemongrove Productions. The careful edit was perfect and captured so many happy moments. We didn’t originally think we’d get a video but on reflection, its one of our most treasured things from the day.

We were so lucky to have a very accommodating vicar who was more then happy for us to arrange for an owl to fly the rings down the isle when we exchanged our rings! ‘Snowy’ landed on the arm of my little brother, with the rings and it all went without a hitch. None of our guests knew about this and the look of surprise on their faces was brilliant!

For us, detail (and a few surprises!) were central to our day. For the decor this ranged from personalised rosette name places (I am a keen horse rider), personalised ‘Mr and Mrs’ Bunting, handmade personalised flower crates (made by Paul’s dad), personalised aprons for our nominated carvers during the meal, handmade lanterns, personalised dog outfits (!) and signs. We also had lots of hay bales scattered around as additional outdoor seating and provided blankets which came in handy when it got chilly later in the evening.

Vanilla in All Seasons were our caterers.  The food was incredible and everyone is still talking about it now!

We chose a brilliant band called Under the Covers. They played for us in the afternoon too whilst everyone was gathering for canapés.  We also had a photo booth from Picture Blast which was fun!

Straight after the wedding we went for a mini-moon to Cephalonia.  We are planning a trip to Antarctica later this year!

Our top tip for other Brides Up North would be to consider hiring a wedding planner! We totally underestimated the amount of planning that goes into having a wedding at home – and it never once crossed our minds that we have to arrange and plan for things like generators, toilets and outside catering requirements! Luckily we managed to secure the services of Andrea Swift at Fabulous Day. Andrea was amazing. She took all the stress away from the planning process we meant that we could concentrate on the little details as ultimately we cared a lot more about the small touches and making things personal to us.

Ice, Ice, Baby: An Antarctic Real Wedding In The North East – Lucy & Michael

September 3rd, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Wynyard Hall Wedding by Holden Jones Photography

.

.

I went to school with today’s real bride, albeit that Lucy is a couple of years younger than me (ahem!), so it was a pleasure when she contacted me telling me how much she enjoyed the website when planning her wedding and would I consider featuring her wedding photographs?  Er… would I ever!

.

Lucy and Michael’s wedding at the gorgeous Wynyard Hall – with images by Holden Jones Photography – is a study in how to pull off a quirky theme with elegance.  It’s also oozing with good old North East charm, and was a joy to put together for you this morning.

.

Enjoy.

.

.

.

Lucy says:  Mike proposed on July 7th 2010 in Altea, Spain. We went out for a lovely meal, there was a fantastic atmosphere in the town as Spain had just won their place in the World Cup final. When we got back to the villa, Mike walked me to the balcony, which had been decorated with lanterns and flickering candles. There was chilled champagne and chocolates waiting for me – the whole thing was completely unexpected!

.

.

.

.

We were married on Saturday 19th May 2012 at Wynyard Hall

.

My parents live at Wynyard, making Wynyard Hall the perfect location. No other venue was even considered! Mike knew that Wynyard Hall was the only place for us so when he proposed in Spain he not only presented me with a fabulous ring (from Green & Benz in Manchester), he also gave me an invitation to our wedding! He had asked for my Dad’s blessing and together they secured a date at Wynyard. Victoria Kelley, one of the wedding coordinators at the hall, was fantastic and I would have been lost without her!

We chose Antarctica as our theme! Our table plan showed the route we took on our recent Polar Circle Quest. We named our 18 tables after the wildlife we saw and the various landing sites we visited in Antarctica. We used our own photographs on each of the tables. It really was the trip of a lifetime!

.

Our colour scheme was sapphire. A month after we got engaged, I went to Dublin with my sister and spotted a pair of sapphire Manolo Blahnik heels… that was the colour scheme decided!

I wore a Blue by Enzoani gown called Calistoga and I bought it from Dreamcatcher Bridal in Kirkham where Mike’s sister bought her wedding dress back in 2006. It’s an A-line gown with a ‘fan’ neckline and large details below the bust, on the hip and on the lower back. The ladies at Dreamcatcher were fantastic and knew exactly what would work. When they picked my dress out, I didn’t think it looked particularly special on the hanger but I decided to give it a go because it was clear that they really knew what they were talking about. As soon as I put the dress on I felt fantastic and when I walked out of the changing area it was great to see that everyone liked it as much as I did.

.

My four bridesmaids wore floor-length, sapphire, satin Dessy dresses and they looked gorgeous. Two of them went for strapless and the other two went for a scoop neck. It took a little while to sort out as they are all different in height, shape and hair colour… but we got there! As for the men, they wore silk grey suits by Cameron Ross. They all looked fantastic in their tailcoats. I bought their cravats from Dessy so they matched the bridesmaids’ dresses perfectly. All of the outfits were from Grace the Weddings Co in Darlington.

My dad and I travelled to Wynyard Hall by horse and carriage. The two Black Friesians, William and Harry, are the most handsome horses I have ever seen and it was a pleasure getting to know their owners, Glenda and Robert of Greencroft Classic Carriages.

I carried a bouquet consisting of roses and calla lilies. It was perfect for me, as I wanted something small, simple and easy to carry! Adam Prest did a spectacular job with all of the flowers from the buttonholes (which had a magnetic fastening!) to the eye-catching centrepieces. Adam is so friendly and creative and he has a real passion for what he does.

The ceremony itself was hugely important to us and we wanted to make it really special and personal. My uncle is a retired Catholic priest and Mike and I knew from the start that we wanted him to be as involved as possible in our ceremony. Although he was unable to actually marry us, he was able to do a reading and say a few words, which made the service incredibly special.

.

.

Holden Jones Photography

.

.

Without a doubt, my favourite part of the day was the London Community Gospel Choir singing O Happy Day and the vicar getting the whole congregation swaying and clapping! This was an emotional point in the day and made the ceremony so unique and personal to us. The choir sang six songs in total, all of which we chose. Their voices were unbelievable.

Rob Jones and Brian Holden of Holden Jones Photography were our photographers. We couldn’t have picked better photographers. They were so professional and they were friendly, putting us both at ease. A pre-wedding shoot was included in our package, which meant we were able to get to know them beforehand and talk through everything in detail. Having two photographers meant that we could have photographs of both of us in the morning, which was really important to me. We are so happy with our photographs – Rob and Brian really captured the moment… without me even realising that they were in the room half the time!

After a delicious cake-tasting session at Robineau Patisserie, we chose a 5-tier chocolate rose and sugar flower wedding cake. We chose different fillings ranging from lemon sponge to hazelnut praline. Jane Robineau was fantastic throughout the whole process. We loved our cake so much that it has its own 2-page spread in our wedding album!

In the evening, we had a photobooth provided by Picture Blast, casino tables, a big screen showing the Champions League, the Aaron Bayley Band and fireworks through 21st Century Fireworks.  We had fantastic entertainment and a great crowd. The two really came together and created an incredible atmosphere, our guests really threw themselves into the day and embraced everything that was going on. This was so important to us because we always wanted our wedding to be about having fun and spending time with all of our friends and family.

.

.

Holden Jones Photography

.

.

We didn’t have a honeymoon.  I went back in to work on the Monday because I’m a (dedicated!) primary school teacher and it was term-time.

.

However, we did manage to visit my sister in Cologne a couple of weeks after the wedding and I may have already booked our first anniversary trip to make up for it!

.

.

Holden Jones Photography

.

.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be this: It sounds like a cliché, but the day is ultimately about you and your husband-to-be/wife-to-be celebrating your relationship, so it is bound to be a big day for the two of you. It’s also a big day for your friends and family, so there can be a lot of (sometimes conflicting) ideas and opinions thrown into the melting pot. It can be difficult to consider everyone’s view and ultimately you just have to go with whatever the two of you feel is right. Again, it is a cliché, but it was genuinely the best day of our lives… so we must have managed to get everything right in the end!

Fit For A Princess! A Real Wedding In The North East – Kirsty & Christopher

June 30th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Welcome to Saturday my lovelies!  I can bet that a few of you will be walking that aisle today, and if you are I wish you all the luck and happiness in the World.  Remember to enjoy it, take some time to enjoy a quiet moment with your new husband and work that gown, girl!

.

Maybe, like me, your day won’t be spent so glamorously – and perhaps you’ll be catching up on some wedmin.  Watch out for a new series of posts coming soon to the wedding blog designed to help you wade through all that necessary wedmin with the minimum of fuss – with tips from brides who have been there plus some super slick industry professionals.

.

For now though, it’s all about the pretty, as Brides Up North reader Kirsty celebrates her fairytale wedding, with images by Dirk Van Der Werff

Kirsty says: We got engaged on 25th September 2010. Chris took me to London for the weekend. On the Friday he took me to the champagne bar Vertigo 42. He had a table reserved overlooking the city and proposed with a beautiful princess cut diamond ring!

We were married on Easter Monday – 9th April 2012 at Wynyard Hall.  Christopher’s mum and I went to look at a few venues together (Chris used to work aboard and he told me wherever I loved he would love too). When we walked into Wynyard Hall we both knew this was the one even before we had looked around. I just got a feeling that this was where I should get married. I took Chris when he came home and he loved it too.

.

We went for a “Vintage Fairytale” theme, with a peaches and cream colour scheme.

I loved getting ready with my seven bridesmaids, mum and flower girl on the morning of the wedding, all in our pink dressing gowns sipping on champagne getting our hair and makeup done by La Belle Vous.

I chose a vintage lace backless dress by Jasmine Bridal Couture from Miranda Marie Bridal Boutique in Yarm. I also had a vintage two tier crystal embellished veil, Jenny Packham bracelet and Jenny Packham headpiece.  I carried a hand tied bouquet of white peonies by Wild & Wonderful

.

My bridesmaids wore custom made dresses from Miranda Marie Bridal Boutique Yarm also designed by Jasmine Bridal. They were strapless, silk dresses in peach. They had cream satin shoes, peach and gold bracelets, gold and pearl earrings and real flowers in their hair.

My father and I travelled by horse and carriage to the ceremony, whilst my bridesmaids, flower girl and mother of the bride went ahead in a vintage Rolls Royce from G W Holmes & Son.  Our wedding guests travelled by vintage red bus.

My favourite moment was waiting outside the mirror room with my Dad and him telling me he loved me. Then the doors opening and seeing Chris stood at the bottom of the aisle. I will never forget that moment, he looked so gorgeous. We both couldn’t stop smiling at each other.

cosmopolitans and mojitos – during the reception.

We had a lot of music on the day to add atmosphere. The Minerva Ensemble string trio played through the wedding and champagne reception, Val Boyers sung during the wedding breakfast and Jeff Dingle and the Moonswing Trio and the Ultimate Wedding DJ provided evening entertainment.

During the wedding breakfast, Val Boyers was singing Song Bird by Eva Cassidy and I just started crying tears of joy. I looked around the room, saw how beautiful everything looked and how happy all our guests looked and I just knew I was having the perfect day.

We went to Venice for four days straight after the wedding and stayed at the Hilton. We are going on our honeymoon in July for three weeks visiting Las Vegas staying at the Venetian, then travelling to Hawaii and then LA. We are both very excited and are wishing the days away till we go.

My top tips for other Brides Up North would be to enjoy the build up as it’s such a special time.  Pick your photographer carefully – a good one will help make you feel so special (like Dirk!) and try and do some things yourself – my guests loved all the personal touches.
