Light On Black: Ian Stuart, Jenny Packham & Enzoani For A Styled Bridal Shoot At Middleton Hall

Is anyone still at their screens this morning, or have you all bunked off for the North West Jenny Packham end of line sale?!  In case there’s anyone still out there…I’ve started so I’ll finish…

.

There’s a lot of negative chat in the blogosphere about styled bridal shoots.  Now, I hate negative chat in general, but particularly when it’s based on unfounded generalisation.  Its unfair to generalise when there are creative, talented people out there working hard to do things well: whether that be styled shoots, wedding fairs (cough, cough!) or supplying excellent wedding services.  Some of us do things differently

In my opinion, styled bridal shoots are fantastic – an opportunity for talented suppliers to get together, forge relationships, show what they can do and work towards a common goal.  All it takes is their time and their imagination.  And when it’s done right – like today’s shoot (featuring not one or two but three Brides Up North Featured Suppliers no less – hello to the fabulous Stan Seaton Photography, Middleton Lodge and Make Up By Jo teams!) – the results can be spectacular.

.

.

Behind the scenes video by RL Films Co

This shoot, originally for editorial in Darlington Weddings’ latest issue (did you pick up your copy and catch up on my regular column?), tells the story of a bride who is persuaded to go over to the dark side… and is really just a chance to show off some beautiful gowns, a stunning venue and some really very striking bridal looks.  Enjoy this little piece of perfection.

.

.

Stan Seaton Photography

.

.

Jane at Stan Seaton Photography says:  Have you ever asked yourself what type of bride you want to be? Are you perfectly classic, and favour the more traditional simplicity in structure and style or are you more unconventional, pushing the boundaries and testing the limits?

.

.

Stan Seaton Photography

.

.

There is a focus on colours this season where soft blush tones and compelling ivories contrast fiercely with the daring black, adding drama and elegance to every silhouette.  Ian Stuart, Jenny Packham and Enzoani have allured us with their latest bridal collections, where beautiful feminine lines and softly contoured layers create a second skin in a world where nothing is as it seems…

Layers Of Lovely! A Real Wedding In The North East – Kerry & Lee

March 27th, 2013 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Grange Photography

.

.

This afternoon we join Kerry and Lee in the North East for their glamorous big day with personalised fun touches.  With images by Grange Photography and a venue to die for (my own choice for my own wedding day in actual fact, so I may be a little biased) this wedding was always going to be a favourite.  And then I clocked Kerry’s amazing dress…

.

.

Grange Photography

.

.

.

Kerry says:  We got engaged at Seaham Hall Spa on 19th August 2010, and were married on 30th June 2012 at St Cuthberts Church, Shadforth, County Durham then Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield for our reception.

.

.

Grange Photography

.

.

We chose the venue because of it’s amazing grounds for photo opportunities and because it’s a beautiful hotel that has a good reputation.  We opted for a marquee wedding with a colour scheme of sage green and white to bring the outside in.

.

.

Grange Photography.

.

.

I chose a Maggie Sottero white dress from Poppy Bridal at Darlington. This was every girl’s dream princess dress with layers of tulle and real Swarovski crystal.  I added a sparkly headpiece by Jenny Packham.  I wore my Nana’s necklace that my sister also wore for her wedding day and placed a photo of her by the wedding cake so she could be thought of on our special day.

.

I carried a bouquet of white roses by The Flowershop at Spennymoor.

.

My bridesmaids wore sage green full length dresses from Susan’s Bridal at Sunderland and the groomsmen the same as the groom. Lee wore a grey suit with matching waistcoat.  The suits were from Troughear Suit Hire in Durham. Everyone looked amazing!

My husband surprised me with a retro VW camper van form Go Retro Vehicle Hire to take us to the wedding and venue. They give you a pretend number plate with your new married name on it.

The whole day was amazing and just watching our family and friends enjoy our special day made our day fantastic and gave us memories we will never forget!

In the afternoon, Lickety Split ice cream parlour from Seaham came with their vintage ice cream trike to give all the guests ice creams of their choice.

After the wedding we honeymooned in Jamaica.

We had a two year engagement as this allowed us to save enough money and plan things that we wanted. My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to take time on your day to stand back and watch everyone for a few minutes. Enjoy every minute as it goes so quick!

Real Wedding Recap 2012: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! A Real Wedding In Yorkshire With Blue Shoes, Ice Cream, Parasols & A Bouncy Castle – Christina & Craig

December 24th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Over the festive period I’ll be recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy…

This fan-bloomin- tabulous Real Wedding was sent to me by Featured Supplier and friend Lynne of Stems Design, who worked her little cotton socks off to create the most stunning floral displays for her friend Christina’s big day.

.

Now I don’t know if its the tiny page’s hats, the parasols or the huge feeling of glee I get from these images, but I feel like kicking up my heels and dancing across the rooftops a bit, Mary Poppins style!

.

Revel in it, and be inspired!

Let’s hear from today’s stunning bride, Christina:  We got engaged on a Med cruise in Venice on a small bridge away from all the hustle and bustle in September 2010 and married on 17 July 2011 at St Margaret’s Church Brotton with our reception at Grinkle Park Hotel in Easington.

I have lived in Brotton my whole life and have lots of fond memories of the church, my eldest sister was married here too which is my first memory of a perfect wedding.  Grinkle Park has always been in my family as the whole family go there one day over Christmas period to get together for dinner, this is a tradition that goes back long before i was born!

.

.

Keith Moss Photography

.

.

Keith Moss Photography

.

.

I loved it when my Dad and I got out of the car outside of the church, the feeling is indescribable, and my Dad shed a tear which was lovely.

.

.

Keith Moss Photography

.

.

Our theme was kind of vintage glam, but really it was just lots of bits and pieces that I love, rather than solely sticking to a theme. I love lace and pearls and wanted the whole thing to be very dreamy and soft. I also wanted it to be fun and relaxed, not too formal and very personal.  Colour wise, we decided on a mixture of pastels, mainly baby pink and blue.

.

.

Keith Moss Photography

.

.

My bridesmaids wore ivory 50’s halter neck tea length gowns with pale pink satin laced petticoats. I got them made to measure from Honey Pie Boutique and I was amazed at the quality when they came.  I had my three nieces as flower girls and they wore hand made dresses in pale pink. I made the headbands for my bridesmaids after seeing some I loved but didn’t want to pay the price for six of them! When we finished making them I loved them more than anything i had seen in the shops.

.

.

Keith Moss Photography

.

.

Keith Moss Photography

.

.

I went for a Pronovias fitted drop waist lace bodice with a full skirt made up of individual lace trimmed frills… I loved it! It was from Poppy Bridal in Darlington and the lady who worked there made my headdress to match using the same lace my dress was made of, I think I almost loved the headdress more than the dress!

Stems Design did all the flowers on the day – the most gorgeous blooms that I have ever seen!

.

To personalise things, I had collected lots of china tea cups from charity shops to use as my favours to our lady guests, we had whiskey bottles for the men with a picture of me and Craig together from when we were 12.  On the back of everyone’s name place was a memory myself or Craig had of that guest. We called each table after a bridge in Venice and we also hand made the invitations which included the actual invitation sewn onto a lace handkerchief for the guest to keep. Instead of a paper guest book I cut lots of squares of different pink and blue fabric up and pinned them to a scrap book for the quests to leave their notes on, eventually i will get round to sewing them together to make a patchwork quilt.

Treats wise, we hired an ice cream van and chose an ivory five tiered cake that reminded me of the lace on my dress. We had four different flavours including fruit, chocolate, carrot and ginger.

We both really loved the whole day,  but the first dance to the Beatles Twist and Shout was memorable! All our close friends got up after about a minute and joined in with us which we loved.

Craig’s dad booked us a surprise Western Med cruise for our honeymoon which we loved, we went to lots of places such as Barcelona, Southern France, Naples Italy, and Pisa.

.

.

.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to relax and enjoy every single moment of the day, don’t worry if your guests are having a good time. Get plenty of pictures and ask if your photographer will stay for after your first dance, our pictures of us and guests dancing are amazing! Also don’t forget to get some of your cake! I did!

Tis The Season: How To Plan A Winter Wedding

December 15th, 2011 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

This afternoon, I am happy to introduce another of my little Christmas elves (you know, the ones that do all the wedding blog writing whilst I laze on the sofa eating Quality Street and watching Downton Abbey reruns*) and guest bloggers, Rebecca from Chillisauce Events.  Rebecca is currently interning at Chillisauce and before she completes her training she has promised us a little series of seasonal delights, so watch the wedding blog for more from her shortly.

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: Stan Seaton Photography

.

.

*If only! An afternoon on the sofa (with Downton’s Cousin Matthew, thank you very much!) would be my dream date right now.  Instead I am hard at work planning some pretty amazing events for 2012:

.

HEARTFor brides, the MASSIVE in the North East (have YOU registered for your VIP Bride To Be Goody Bag yet?) and three fabulous Wedding Exclusives with Dine Venues in Yorkshire.  I am also currently in talks to add a North West event very soon!  Eeeek!

.

HEARTFor wedding industry friends, three more Brides Up North Tweet Ups – dates and locations to be announced soon.  Please contact me to join the guest list if you would like to come along!

.

HEARTPlus some other very exciting TOP SECRET projects for 2012.

.

So whilst I get on with all of the above, I’ll leave you in Rebecca’s capable hands, as she talks about planning a Winter Wedding…

.

.

.

Rebecca says: At this time of year there are lots of seasonal elements that could make your wedding a Winter wonderland from log fires and rich green Christmas trees to fairy lights and snowscapes. Winter is a very romantic time of year and the perfect time to say I do.

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: Stan Seaton Photography

.

.

Winter Wedding Venues

.

December weddings can be amongst the most beautiful as you can tie in a wintery venue with oak beamed ceilings and the warmth of candlelight, as well as taking advantage of existing Christmas decorations. Incorporate seasonal flowers into your wedding that will be readily available at this time such as Holly, Roses, Ivy and Mistletoe.  These will look both romantic and festive. Having your wedding at Christmas does not mean you have to stick to traditional; keep it contemporary using white and gold as opposed to red and green.

.

Things to consider: If you are planning a traditional Church ceremony, many Anglican and Catholic ministers refuse to marry during Advent, which runs until Christmas Eve.  With regards to venues, you may struggle to decide on a date that is available and suits the majority of your guests. Venues will be booked up with Christmas parties and so will your guests, so make sure you make arrangements far in advance.

.

January and February can be great for saving money on venues and your honeymoon as there will be lots of deals on at this time. With the New Year being a quiet time for venues, you can easily bargain cheaper prices for the same space and this will give you more options to splurge elsewhere with your wedding budget. Forget three year waiting lists: over the winter months dream venues will have more availability and suppliers will often be offering discounts too.

.

Things to consider: You will need to be super organised especially if your wedding is in the early New Year, planning ahead of the Christmas and New Year lull, as many companies will be closed and out of contact during this time. Also consider the weather as snow and strong winds might throw a spanner in the works! Be prepared to have an action plan should guests have difficulty making it on the day.

.

.

Brides Up North UK Wedding Blog: Stan Seaton Photography

.

.

Winter Wedding Food

.

There are great ingredients and produce unique to Winter. In December you may want to keep it traditional with turkey, parsnips and swede, both colourful and warming veggies. In January and February duck and halibut are great meats to experiment with for main courses, with beetroot and pumpkin as considerations for starters and apples and rhubarb as great Winter desert ingredients.

.

Include the Christmas theme all the way down to the favours, thinking Winter all the way with snowflake shaped cinnamon biscuits or red and white striped candy canes. Why not serve mulled wine or wintery cocktails like a Pom Cosmo – just replace cranberry juice with pomegranate for a festive touch.

.

.

Stan Seaton Photography

.

.

Winter Wedding Bridal Style

.

The great thing about winter weddings is that you can really accessorize with shawls, gillets and fur or make a statement with long sleeves. Lace and fur are very on trend, so would look great, especially during winter.  Twinkle is never going out of fashion and more is more in the darker months!

A Wedding Blog Styled Shoot – Winter Bridal Style by Brides Up North

October 10th, 2011 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

I was recently invited along by the Sunday Sun to act as stylist on a winter bridal fashion shoot at Rockliffe Hall in Darlington.  The edit, plus some advice on winter bridal style courtesy of this was published in the paper yesterday – did you pick up a copy?

.

The team, consisting of Stan and Jane from Stan Seaton PhotographyHooker and Young Darlington, The Rockliffe Hall Spa, Hart Company, Poppy Bridal, Leigh Hetherington and myself worked all day to produce some stunning images.  I share my personal favourites here.  Be inspired!.

.

If you would like to work with me on a styled shoot, please get in touch!

The nights may be longer and the wind may be sharper, but tying the knot during the winter is a great fashion choice. The fabrics can be richer and more sumptuous; the colour palette more flattering; there can never be too much sparkle and you can go overboard on fabulous accessories.

For a true snow princess look, think layers of crisp white tulle, big skirts and lace detailing. The gorgeous gowns by Leigh Hetherington are straight out of a fairy tale. You won’t need a lot of colour, but to keep it pretty, add colour contrasts of pale blue and green. This look is all about the drama, so add a full length veil and touches of diamante sparkle to a pale hydrangea bouquet.

.

If you prefer a sleeker silhouette, chose fluid fabrics like silk and chiffon and go to town on the accessories and detailing. Feathers, pearls and crystals all work well to create a stylish look with a nod to the season. When it comes to winter bridal accessories, more is more. Jenny Packham has created a complimentary line of feathered shrugs , bejewelled hair vines and crystal cuffs that set off her dresses gorgeously (Jenny Packham is available at Poppy Bridal, Darlington).
