Lovebugs. A Real Engagement In Durham – Claire & Scott

May 6th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Darren Mack Photography

To ease you back into the working week, we’re touring the town I grew up in this morning to help lovebugs Claire and Scott celebrate their engagement, with a little help from Darren Mack Photography.

They’ve been together for fifteen years and these two can’t wait to finally make it official.  Let’s hear their love story.

Darren Mack Photography

Claire says: We got engaged on Valentine’s Day 2012, on a muddy hillside in Upper Nidderdale, North Yorkshire. It was a bit of a surprise to both of us, we’d been together for 15 years but it never felt like the right time. But on that day it did!

Darren Mack Photography

We’re getting married in August 2014 at Crook Hall, Durham City, hopefully outside in the garden. It’s a tiny ceremony with five guests and a big party afterwards!

Darren Mack Photography

We met at University at St.John’s College in York in 1996. We both did degrees in Geography. We were, and still are, a couple of Indie kids!

The college Summer Ball 1996 was our first date and we’ve been together ever since. Yeah it was true love! It was a great summer; it feels like we went out every night and had a party.  We knew “that was it” when we both got temp jobs working nightshift in a factory making plastic packaging and loved it! We really fell in love during that amazing summer.

Darren Mack Photography

Darren Mack Photography

I love his big, kind heart. He’s one in a million.  Our biggest wish for married life is that it doesn’t change us or what we already have, and that we live happily ever after…

Darren Mack Photography

Darren Mack Photography

We decided to record our engagement on camera to learn to relax a little, we live in our own little world and not many people get invited in! I think it’s definitely made us less worried about the main shoot on our wedding day. Daz made us feel relaxed and we almost forgot that we were being photographed.

Darren Mack Photography

We’ll be looking in on Brides Up North in the run up to our big day!

Darren Mack Photography

Congratulations Claire & Scott!

Beautiful Love. A Real Engagement In Manchester – Martyna & Daniel

February 5th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Clare Robinson Photography

I always get excited to receive our engagement submissions for the blog because – and call me a nosy parker – I love reading every couple’s individual love story.  Without exception, every one I receive is full of happiness and hope for the future.

Martyna and Daniel’s engagement announcement is no exception, so I hope you’ll join me in wishing them congratulations, luck and love.  I’ll look forward to sharing their Real Wedding here on Brides Up North not too long from now.

With images by Clare Robinson Photography.

Clare Robinson Photography

Martyna says:  Daniel asked me to marry him on my birthday – Christmas morning. The best birthday and Christmas present ever!

Clare Robinson Photography

About 6 years ago we met at work and from then everything started!  On our first date we went out to Pizza Express, our favourite restaurant in Manchester. I remember what we ordered and where we sat on that day.

Clare Robinson Photography

Clare Robinson Photography

From the beginning I knew this was it! I saw Dan going out and spending time with his younger brothers and from that time I was sure about him.

Clare Robinson Photography

I love about Dan that he cares and respects me. Each time I need him, he is there. I love spending time with him, even when we don’t talk; it feels good when he is next to me.

Gothic Romance. A Day Of The Dead Inspired Engagement Shoot In Liverpool – Bex & Cara

October 14th, 2013 | Julia Braime

Nick Kennard Photography

I’ve been spending the morning planning our BIG Halloween party for #weddinghourlive (are you coming?!  click here for all the details), so how better to finish off the day with a gothic inspired engagement shoot in Liverpool?  Bex and Cara plan to tie the knot on Halloween next year, and judging by these photographs and hearing their plans,  these cool chicks are going to have one hell of a wedding

Let’s hear their love story.  With images by Nick Kennard Photography.

Nick Kennard Photography

Cara says:  Deciding to get married was a bit spontaneous really! We were on a romantic night out at our favourite bar, and after a little reminiscing we sort of just agreed to it – it’s not the most romantic proposal, but we’re just happy to be engaged! That’s good enough for us!

Nick Kennard Photography

Nick Kennard Photography

We’re going to get married at Thornton Hall on the Wirral, we fell in love with the venue after we realised we could have an evening wedding under the arbour outside – it might be a bit chilly, but I’m looking forward to the magical look of lots of fairy lights and lanterns in the dark! Call us unconventional, but we’re getting married on the 31st October 2014 – spooky!

Nick Kennard Photography

Nick Kennard Photography

We’re both alternative models, so we met on the job! Our careers as models take us to all sorts of exciting events and places, with unconventional themes, and we get to work for some weird and wonderful companies! I guess our jobs meant we already liked a lot of the same things, tattoo culture, alternative clothing and colourful hair! We met over 3 years ago now.

Nick Kennard Photography

Our first date was at an awesome boutique bar in Liverpool called Santa Chupitos, I suppose it was just a night out, but if you’re with someone you love even the little everyday things become amazing.

Nick Kennard Photography

We’re both a bit in love with the paranormal, so we went on a Shiverpool tour! I know ghosts aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions a romantic date, but Beth was so scared she jumped straight into my arms! I didn’t want to let her go. That’s when I knew she was the one.

Nick Kennard Photography

Nick Kennard Photography

We’re adventurers at heart, so we’d like to buy a little retro motorhome and travel the world – maybe we could go and enjoy the Day of the Dead festival in Mexico that inspired this shoot!

Nick Kennard Photography

I know the engagement shoot trend is only just catching on in the UK, but we loved the idea of capturing how happy and in love we are – you’re full of electricity just after you get engaged, and that feeling is indescribable, so we thought we’d describe it in pictures instead!  We spent the day at Maya in Liverpool.

We loved it. It’s made the whole thing seem very real, and now we’re just counting down the days! We also got to have fun with the fashion – which is something we both love. We got these amazing bespoke shoes designed by Elegant Steps – we just drew up designs for what we wanted and ES dyed and embellished some of their shoes for us to make the designs a reality!

Our favourite images are going to get framed and put on the wall – but we’re also going to start a scrapbook of all our experiences together – a bit like the film ‘UP’. Hopefully when we’re old we can look back on it and shed a happy tear or two.

Nick Kennard Photography

We think the wedding industry is so concentrated in the South and in America that sometimes people forget that Northern brides are often more creative, thrifty and more willing to experiment with non-traditional weddings! We love that Brides Up North is highlighting this.

Nick Kennard Photography

We’ll be back to share our Real Wedding images.  It’s going to be an experience like no other, and it’s going to take a lot of planning, but I can’t wait for it!

Nick Kennard Photography

Congratulations Cara & Bex!

Sun Bleached Love: A Colourful Real Engagement In The North East – Beck & Gary

July 2nd, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

The Twins

.

.

And who was saying that there’s no such thing as a British Summer?

.

Today’s engagement shoot – sent to me by real bride Beck and North East photographers Caroline and Kelly of The Twins – is like a shot of pure sunshine (with a rather lovely love story thrown in).

.

Bask in it!  And SPF at the ready, because next week is supposed to be scorching…

The Twins

.

Beck says:  We got engaged on Christmas Day 2010. It was the first Christmas we had spent together despite being a couple for three years as our families lived in different parts of the country. Gary knows how much Christmas means to me and my family and stayed up North with me. We woke up together at my parents’ house and he hugged me a put the ring box in my hand! Huuugggge surprise! I never technically said yes apparently, I just cried…lots!

We are getting married in July at Woodhill Hall in Otterburn, Northumberland.

We met at a fashion brand’s head office, Gary was the junior accountant and I was on a year’s university placement, we first started talking at the photocopier!  On our first date Gary invited me to his flat and we ate lots of cheese Doritos and watched DVDs and then he walked me back to my sister’s flat like a true gentleman…with a cheeky kiss added in! And yes it was love from the start!

I knew he was the one when he told me I looked beautiful when I first wake up in the morning, when I have crazy bed hair, I’m half asleep and can’t see (I wear contacts!) He even proposed to me when I had just woken up!

We loved our engagement shoot with Kelly & Caroline! It has made us much more relaxed about the big day and helped us to get used to the camera. We’re planning on printing some of the photographs out and framing them to give to the Mums on the day of the wedding as a gift.

Summer Shutdown! And A Colourful Real Engagement Shoot –Nicola & Michael

June 17th, 2013 | Julia Braime

Pixies In The Cellar

.

.

Everyone needs a holiday, right?

.

It’s Summer Shutdown season here on the blog, and as the team take a break to rest and recharge for the second half of what’s set to be the biggest and best year year yet at Brides Up North HQ, we’ll be leaving you with a reduced blogging schedule that will make sure that you still get your daily dose of wedding pretty.

.

Usual service will recommence on 1st July 2013,  but in the meantime keep dropping in on a daily basis and watch out for recaps of our favourite Real Weddings so far in 2013, plenty of eye candy, new features that we just won’t be able to wait to share, some special supplier showcases and a couple of surprises too!

.

So without further ado, I officially declare Summer 2013 open – come on sunshine!

.

.

Pixies In The Cellar

Starting the Summer Shutdown off with a burst of colour, today we join Nicola and Michael as they share their sweet story and excitement about their upcoming big day.  With images by Pixies In The Cellar.

Nicola says:  We got engaged in the beautiful Maldives on 6th June 2011.  It was a complete surprise – just us at the end of a jetty on a beautiful island.  Michael had a candle lit dinner planned and we sat outside celebrating under the stars on a private deck over the edge of the beach. Just us and a – very discrete – waiter. It was the perfect proposal.  He’d also asked my Dad’s permission before we left.

We met at the gym in June 2006. After three weeks of eyes and smiles, I asked him on a date!  We went for a drink at a nearby hotel. Neither of us were looking to meet ‘the one’ but couldn’t deny that there was an instant attraction on both sides.

After casually dating for a few months, Michael was given the chance to go out and play rugby in New Zealand. As we hadn’t been dating long, we left it at “tTanks for a great Summer, it’s been fun’. No pressure to keep in touch – I simply wished him good luck as he flew off in late November.

.

Then, before long, emails turned to texts and texts turned to calls and on New Year’s Eve 2006, we both said those three magic words. Neither of us could deny our feelings and longer.

.

After finishing my degree in May, I flew out to New Zealand for an amazing Summer together before both returning to England in August.

.

Seven years later, I guess true love really does conquer all!

I love Michael’s love of life and how he never fails to make me smile. He is not only beautiful on the outside but also one of the nicest men you could ever wish to meet. He is smart, loving, incredibly witty and, often, the yin to my yang – the calming voice, when I worry too much!

.

Michael:  Nicola makes me laugh. She is my best friend and, to top it off, smokin’ hot!

We’ve been engaged for two years now and are just weeks away from getting married. Wishing we’d had some photographs done when we first got engaged, we decided that it would be a lovely memory and keepsake to treasure as part of the build up to our big day! The ‘just before we were Mr and Mrs’ shots. It also gave us and Peter (our amazing photographer – Pixies In The Cellar) chance to get to know one another before the wedding; rather than have a stranger turn up on the day.

Snowkissed! A Real Engagement In The Lake District – Amanda & Aaron

March 8th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Lee Scullion Photography

.

.

Nothing like a bit of fresh air and a lovely love story to round off the week!  Amanda and Aaron are getting married this very weekend in the North East (congratulations!), but first, we join them and their wedding photographer, Brides Up North favourite Lee Scullion, at the spot – of immense natural beauty – where Aaron got down on one knee.

.

Leave those stilettos at home!  It’s walking boots at the ready as we are headed to the great (and gorgeous!) outdoors…

Aaron says:  We got engaged in April 2012, in the Lake District. Amanda guessed it was going to be that weekend. It was at Aira Force. It’s a waterfall, with a stone bridge over it (we have a tradition of kissing in the middle of every bridge we walk over together). We went to the lakes for the weekend, and we climbed Helvelynn on the Saturday. Amanda thought that I would propose at the top, but I didn’t, so she was a little upset that night. I waited until the Sunday night, just before we were due to come home, and I got down on one knee on the bridge as it was pouring down with rain. And she said yes, of course! We were both very excited and did a bit of jumping around and kissing each other!

Amanda came to the UK to study at the University of Nottingham and we met when some mutual friends and family went out to dinner.

Amanda asked me if I would be her tour guide as she wanted to travel around England. I suggested taking her to the Lake District for a long weekend! It seemed to start out as a sightseeing trip, but I think we both had ulterior motives. By the end of it we knew we wanted to be together.

When Amanda had to go back to America after her visa expired and I couldn’t bear the thought of being without her,  I knew she had to move back as soon as possible.

We love how happy we make each other, and our biggest wish for married life is to grow together and be there for each other through thick and thin.

We chose to have an engagement shoot as we wanted to capture and share how we felt in the beautiful setting where I proposed. It was also a great opportunity to get to know our fabulous wedding photographer, Lee Scullion, and get used to being photographed before the big day.

.

We would like to make a small album and use our favourite photo for a signature frame at our wedding ceremony for all our guests to sign. We are also using two more photographs to give to our mums as thank you presents since our wedding is on Mother’s Day. After seeing the photographs, we have a lot of confidence in our photographer and are extremely excited about having him on our wedding day. It was a great decision to have the engagement shoot! I would recommend it to everyone.

Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside! A Real Engagement In The North West – Chriss & Ritch

February 14th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

North West Weddings & Portraits | Photography by Ashton Photography

.

.

Happy Valentine’s Day my lovelies!  I’ve obviously written this post in advance, as I anticipated that I’d be far too tied up clearing the hallway of all those love notes landing on my welcome mat…

.

In reality though, there’s only one man for me, so Happy Valentine’s Day to my lovely husband Alan – our last as a family of two!

.

I’ll let you into a secret – I absolutely LOVE Valentine’s Day.  Commercial racket yes, but so is Christmas (my other favourite holiday)!  Let’s just say I’m a marketer’s dream!  I think it harks back to the excitement of my school days: seeing if my of-the-moment crush liked me enough to pay a visit to Clinton Cards.  Generally not.  But hey!  I may never really have got any cards to write home about (except the ones from you, thanks Mum), but it was all about the anticipation!

.

Today, we celebrate by meeting a couple full of anticipation for their wedding day, having all but given up on finding long term love before connecting online.  So dip something sweet in your cuppa and enjoy their love story, with images by Ashton Photography

.

.

.

.

Chriss says:  We had booked a mini break trip to the beautiful city of Verona and had planned to visit all of the usual landmarks. I hadn’t been too bothered about going to visit the “Casa di Giulietta”, but Ritch really wanted to go, so reluctantly, I braved the hoards of French and Italian kids on Shakespearean educationals and we bought our two tickets into the house. Once inside and touring the various rooms it was thankfully quite peaceful as most of the crowds were gathering in the courtyard, staring up at the balcony or otherwise trying to encourage eternal luck and love by rubbing Juliet’s right breast! As we entered the room and waited for a group to leave the balcony, Ritch was hanging back and, with hindsight, I suppose seemed to be a little preoccupied. He encouraged me to go out onto the balcony; I looked down on the school kids in the courtyard… they looked back up at me.  I turned around to go back inside and Ritch was down on his knee beside me, with that little box in his hand: “Will you marry me?”

.

Of course I said “Yes”! All very romantic and, for me, the perfect proposal…the boy done good!

.

As soon as we announced our engagement one of my best friends offered to host our special day in their beautiful home in West Lancashire – a truly unique venue. We planned it for October 6th 2012 and can’t wait to share our wedding photographs with Brides Up North soon!

After years in the relationship wilderness, we have both said that we had all but given up.  Our first date was “last chance saloon” for the on-line dating game!  Good job that evening in June 2010 was successful!

.

.

North West Weddings & Portraits | Photography by Ashton Photography

.

.

We arranged to meet half way between where we both lived and our first date was at a riverside hotel bar where we sat outside and laughed about each others’ online dating experiences – always and good ice breaker!  There was definitely a mutual attraction at first sight, love, however, took a little longer

We didn’t have any decent photographs of us together and neither of us felt very comfortable in front of the camera, so the option to have an engagement shoot was a great addition to the wedding package and a chance to get a bit of practice in. Steph of Ashton Photography gave us a few tips on how to get the best photos – but she did all of the hard work.

.

We had a great day out with Steph. We live in Blackpool and spend a lot of time with our dog Jack, on the beach and prom.  Ritch is also a hard core cyclist who clocks up many a mile up and down the sea front on his two wheels; this was the natural place for us to use as a backdrop for our pre-wedding shoot.

Even for someone that works within wedding industry and who knows what to expect, planning your own wedding can still be very daunting! The thousands of pages in the (very expensive!) glossies and limitless web coverage available to brides and grooms is overwhelming. I’ve found Brides Up North to be an invaluable place to get real ideas and real information from real people relative to the area that we live in… great weddings happen Up North – fact!

Autumn Leaves: A Real Engagement In Manchester – Faye & Anthony

November 13th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Manchester Engagement by David Stubbs Photography

.

.

Time for another love story.

.

.

Manchester Engagement by David Stubbs Photography

.

.

Glee! Could a set of woodland engagement photographs capture the season any more joyfully?  I love these images sent to me by Brides Up North reader Faye and David Stubbs Photography.  We’ll let Faye and Anthony get on with their dancing in the leaves shortly, but first let’s hear Faye tell us more…

.

.

David Stubbs Photography

.

.

Faye says:  Anthony proposed in May 2012 when we visited the island of La Palma in the Canaries. After nearly four years I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping he would soon, but I was surprised! Anthony seized a beautiful moment so didn’t propose with a ring, but true to tradition Anthony proposed on one knee in front of the amazing sunset we were watching over the sea. We chose a ring together when we returned home from our holiday, just two days after my birthday, a birthday to remember!

.

.

David Stubbs Photography

.

.

At first we explored the possibility of getting married abroad, mainly because we wanted amazing photos to be able to look back on and we didn’t want traditional English weather to ruin them. However, after much deliberation we decided it just wasn’t us to get married abroad we wanted to stick with our Northern roots. I did some research and found a photographer (David Stubbs Photography) that I am confident will get amazing photos whatever the weather. We will be getting married at St John’s church in our home town of Failsworth and our reception will be held at Brookdale Golf Club in Woodhouses, Failsworth.

.

.

David Stubbs Photography

.

.

We first met six years ago when we were 18, through mutual friends. We dated for a few months but being young we went our separate ways. After 18 months apart we decided we didn’t want to be apart any longer and have been together for four years now.  True to the saying, you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. When I still felt the same way about Anthony 18 months after separating I knew there was something special. When our paths met again I knew he was the one.

.

.

David Stubbs Photography

.

.

Reunited, our student and apprentice wages took us on a lovely burger and a beer for a fiver first date at Lloyds bar in Manchester! We weren’t complaining though, we continued the same date routine both in Liverpool where I was at University and Manchester for the next seven months!

.

.

David Stubbs Photography

.

.

For both of us we love each others sense of humour, they’re both stupid! For me, I love that I can be completely myself and silly with Anthony and he’ll always laugh!

.

.

David Stubbs Photography

.

.

Our biggest wish for married life definitely that nothing changes. I love Anthony just the way he is and would not want marriage to change anything about our relationship.

.

.

David Stubbs Photography

.

.

David Stubbs Photography

.

.

We chose to have an engagement shoot because we’ll really enjoy having photos to look back on; they trigger the exact memory from the moment in time they’ve captured.  David was fantastic! We were both nervous for the engagement shoot but both really enjoyed it. We’ll be more at ease for the photos on our wedding day now and can spend all our time worrying about saying our vows!

.

.

David Stubbs Photography

.

.

I love Brides Up North because many blogs aren’t specific to any area in particular. Bride’s Up North is perfect for us that are always unwilling to stray too far from our roots!  We’ll definitely be back to share the photos from our big day with Brides Up North!

.

.

HEARTCongratulations Faye & Anthony! HEART

She Said Yes! A Real Engagement – Sam & Andy

Maybe I’m super nosy (ok, definitely), but I love featuring engagement shoot and stories!  It’s a real privilege to share all the details of how a couple met, what they love about each other and their plans for the future.

.

Today we are dipping into the love story of Brides Up North reader Sam and husband to be Andy, who headed off to the beach for an engagement photography session with Photography by Sarah and Joanne.

.

Let’s hear from bride to be Sam…

Sam says: We got engaged in Rhoda Bay, Corfu, on 15th June 2010.  Andy proposed at night on the beach, down on one knee.  It was a total shock despite being together for five years, I thought it wouldn’t happen for a while yet!

.

We are getting married in June 2013 at Kirkley Hall, near Ponteland.

We first met at college when we started hanging around in the same group of friends.  We had previously been at school together but didn’t know each other then.

Our first date was just a meal and a few drinks (as you do!) and it was true love right from the start!  I knew that we were meant to be together as I had never felt that feeling ever before.  I used to describe it like “a mould”: we just fitted together perfectly and it felt so right.

I love the way he looks after me and lets me know how much I mean to him, and our biggest with for married life is a happy, healthy and fulfilling future together.

In seven years we have never had any pictures taken so decided to have an engagement shoot to put that right!  We thought that it was a good idea to get used to having pictures taken together in the run up to the wedding.

We loved the shoot and had lots of fun after we relaxed in front of the camera.  We plan to frame a selection and make a memories album with the rest.

It’s Thursday.  The weekend approacheth.  If you need another reason to be cheerful, then how about this  beautiful twosome’s lovely love story, with a gorgeous set of engagement photographs by the superbly talented (and a Brides Up North Featured Supplier to boot!) Jess Petrie Photography.  I was saving this for my Wedding Magazine column, but thought that I would share this with you lot here too!

.

I just love what this gal does with colour, tone and light.  Super fresh, romantic and just what the doctor ordered!  Get her booked for your big day, pronto.

.

Let’s catch up with Brides Up North reader Jennie and her husband to be Andrew as they take a pre-wedding walk through one of their favourite beauty spots.

Jennie says:  Andrew proposed up Loughrigg Fell in the Lake District. We were all on our own overlooking a view of Lake Windermere and the ring was in the lunchbox for our picnic!

We are getting married this month at The Gibbon Bridge Hotel in Chipping, Lancashire. The plan is to have a garden wedding, weather permitting!

We met at 6th Form College through mutual friends in year 2000 and became a couple in 2001.  Our first date was both of us (and a hundred other people!) at an after show party. We became a couple on a Tuesday and the party was on the following Saturday. It was our first chance to socialise due to the show I was in that week.

I think I knew Andrew was the one when he suggested we move in together.  I love Andrew’s smile and the way he gets on so easily with people around him.

We thought an engagement shoot it was a great idea to get to know our photographer, Jess Petrie Photography, and her style. We knew it would help settle any nerves in front of the camera for the big day! It was also great to have some professional pictures taken in one of our favourite local walking spots!

We had a lovely afternoon for our engagement shoot and it helped us to relax. We have shared the photos with our family and friends which has stirred up the excitement for the big day!
