keeping it classic. ronald joyce for a pretty wedding at west tower – victoria & christian

September 3rd, 2015 | Rachel Parry

This afternoon on the blog we have another wedding that stands out, not for having an unusual theme or vibrant colour scheme, but due to its simplicity.

After finding a dream venue in the West Tower, bride Victoria set to work adding elegant touches for the classic wedding she’d always dreamed of.

We love Victoria’s stunning Ronald Joyce gown, her maids’ lovely latte coloured dresses, the chic looking cake and all the pretty peonies. Just perfect!

victoria says: We got engaged on Christmas Day 2012, three months after having our little boy so Christian asked me when he had got in from work as he was working that Christmas Day. Not very romantic but it was nice.

We picked the date the 30th May 2015 for the wedding because ever since we have been together the weather has always been nice around that time of year.

We got married at West Tower, Ormskirk. I was told about the venue by my florist, who I have known for more than 15 years. We went and took a look around and fell I love with it that much it made me cry. It was just what we were looking for, it had character but was modern at the same so was perfect for us.

I wanted an elegant theme just because it looks so lovely and classy. I think I went for this theme once we had found our venue and I had found my dress as it made me feel elegant so everything just fell into place.

I went with a latte type of colour scheme as again I thought it looked elegant and classy. I just knew I didn’t want bright colours.

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (22)

I chose a dress I didn’t think I would have as it had a high neckline and I always thought I would go for a strapless. It also had a lot of Swarovski crystals, which again I didn’t think of having initially. When I tried it on I was very surprised as it made stand up straight and made me feel so elegant – I just loved it. I did keep looking for a while but I just kept going back to the first one so that’s how I knew it was ‘the one’.

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (68)

My dress was by Ronald Joyce and my full length vail was by Joyce Jackson, both bought from Romantica in Wigan. My headdress was by Richard Designs and that was from a friend’s bridal shop, Bride 2 Be, in Leigh. My shoes where Jenny Packham from Debenhams and all jewellery was from Debenhams too.

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (26)

My husband, the best man and ushers all wore Moss London slim fitted suits with bid like waistcoats, which we thought really set them off. Their shoes were from Aldo and Topman and shirts from TM Lewin. Sue at The Wow Factor (who is amazing) made our son Harry’s full suit, the men’s ties and pocket ties and the bridesmaid dresses.

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (39)

For transport on the wedding day we hired a Daimler car from Grace Wedding Cars in Ashton Wigan, which was lovely.

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (44)

Our photographer was Teresa C Photography, who had already done photos for us in the past which we love so we didn’t hesitate at all in asking her would she do our wedding and the outcome was amazing. She is a very talented photographer and we would highly recommend her, as we always do.

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (12)
Our cake was made by Jane at Coco Cakes. I wanted a simple cake with pearls and a faded colour effect. We also wanted it to be all different flavours, as it was going to be our evening desert after our barbecue. We went for Victoria sponge, carrot, chocolate and then lemon drizzle, plus more chocolate in 50 cupcakes. It was all delicious. She is amazing at cake making and I’ve always got my cakes made by her. It was a three-day proses to make the cake, which was well worth it – she is a perfectionist!

Stacey Whitaker from Perfect Daze, in Wigan, created all the flower arrangements, including those carried by me and my bridesmaids. I wanted all flowers for table arrangements to be mainly hydrangeas and peonies so left Stacey to work her magic. She is an amazing florist and would highly recommend her and her team.

As favours we gave soaps to the ladies and scratch cards to the men.

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (20)
The entertainment for the evening was a band called Kings of the Dance Floor, who we found on the intern. They were an indie type of band and really got the place rocking! They were excellent all night and the dance floor was packed from beginning to end, which I guess you get with a very good band.

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (10)

Special touches on the day included my one of my best friends Olie, giving me away as my mum and dad have both passed away. I also had an old picture of my parents displayed on the day. The best man David did an amazing job of his speech and everybody has been talking about it since. He managed to get everyone clicking their fingers to the Adams Family!

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (59)

We would highly recommend West Tower to other couples, as they couldn’t do enough for us and the whole day ran smoothly. It was an amazing day, and one we will never forget!

A Romantic Wedding at The West Tower (c) Teresa C Photography (69)

We have yet to go on honeymoon. We are planning that for next year as we have just done the two of the most stressful things in life – buying a house and getting married.

best dressed. supplier showcase: elegance of scholes

April 28th, 2015 | Julia Braime

Elegance Of Scholes (1)

Well, Brides Up North, last weekend’s events at Dine’s Allerton Castle and The Alnwick Garden were just magical! What an EPIC end to another amazing season of Brides Up North Luxury Wedding Exhibitions… stellar turnouts and I swear our exhibitors just get more talented and creative! Thanks to everyone – brides, grooms, our suppliers and our stunning venues – for their support and brilliance. We love you.

One fabulous supplier who we all got to know a little better this season was the lovely Cat of Brides Up North Sponsor boutique, elegance of scholes.  Today, she opens the doors of her beautiful bridal shop for us to take a closer peek.

Oh and FYI: we’re already planning an autumn season of events to knock your socks off..! Stay tuned.

Elegance Of Scholes (2)

When did Elegance Of Scholes open and what is your background?

cat says: Elegance opened around six years ago, but I bought it last August after deciding to embark on a bit of a lifestyle change! Prior to owning Elegance I was a full-time Corporate Event Manager, and I also had my own Wedding Venue Décor business. Both of these have set me up well with a lot of the skills needed to run my own business, and having worked in the wedding industry for a number of years I understand how brides feel and what they go through… and it’s lovely to be able to help them out with such a huge, special and important part of the journey!

Elegance Of Scholes (28)

Which wedding gown designers do you stock?

We stock Justin Alexander, Ellis Bridal and Mark Lesley. All three labels complement each other really well and we have a great selection of silhouettes and fabrics to suit all tastes.

What bridal accessories labels do you stock?

We stock tiaras and veils by Richard Designs, veils by Nieve Couture and Joyce Jackson, and tiaras/ jewellery by Blossom. We update our selection of bridal accessories on a regular basis so it’s worth keeping an eye out until we have your perfect piece! We also have a small selection of shoes by Rainbow, and are looking to expand this collection in the near future.

Elegance Of Scholes (7)

What makes you different?

We are a luxury boutique with an extremely high level of service. People are always taken by surprise by the size of the boutique once they enter (we get a lot of ‘wow!’ comments!), and we have two spacious private fitting rooms at the rear of the boutique so guests can relax and enjoy their experience in comfort and privacy. We also have an in-house seamstress so all alterations are carried out on the premises, meaning the dress stays with us until your big day.

Elegance Of Scholes (13)

Where are you located?

We are located in a small village called Scholes, which is close to Cleckheaton. Exit the M62 at J26 (Chain Barr roundabout), and we’re a couple of miles from there.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

Our gowns range from about £900-£1800, although we do also have a sale room for brides on a slightly lower budget.

Elegance Of Scholes (5)

Do Brides Up North need an appointment?

We do tend to run on an appointment basis, purely so that we can guarantee the bride our undivided attention. Our first bridal appointments tend to be around an hour long, and we would always start with an initial chat about a bride’s ideas/wedding/preferred dress styles. From there we let the bride (and any accompanying people!) browse the dresses and pull out those they want to try on. The appointment then evolves as we eliminate certain dresses from the running/ narrow the selection down to THE dress. Quite often we add in our own opinion of dresses that girls might like to try… with surprising results! It’s amazing how many girls come in with an idea of their perfect dress, and leave with something completely different!

Elegance Of Scholes (31)

What is your current favourite gown that you stock and why?

I have two current favourites (although it was pretty hard limiting myself to just two!)– Justin Alexander 8762 for the perfect princess ball-gown, and Ellis 11368, which is an absolutely stunning dress with lace sleeves and an amazing keyhole back… on the right figure it’s a definite show-stopper!

Is there a particular style of dress that is popular with your brides at the moment? What trends do you see being popular this year?

Lace continues to be popular, with the fitted mermaid-style being a particular favourite. We’re also seeing a move towards much more brides wanting sleeves or straps over strapless gowns, and the ‘feature back’ is also becoming more and more popular. As we were told when buying our new collections – “the back is the new front”… and it appears to be true!

Elegance Of Scholes (15)

How does Elegance Of Scholes provide a superior experience to other wedding dress boutiques?

We pride ourselves on our relaxed and friendly service, and certainly are not pushy sales-people. Our priority first and foremost is making girls feel comfortable and happy in their search for their dress. There’s nothing nicer than the look on a girl’s face when they look in the mirror and see themselves as a ‘Bride’ for the first time, and it’s a privilege to us that we get to be the ones to put that look on their faces! We feel that we are definitely doing something right, as the majority of our appointments come from recommendations from past brides who have had the ‘Elegance Experience’ – and the comments, reviews and photos we receive after the big day are testament to this, and lovely for us to receive!

Elegance Of Scholes (10)

Do you stock bridesmaid dresses?

Yes – we stock Kelsey Rose and Mark Lesley bridesmaid dresses, as well as flower girl’s dresses. Soft tulle seems to be the fabric of choice in bridesmaids this season (a lot of the new Kelsey Rose collection comes in this fabric), although chiffon is still (and I believe will remain) a very popular option. We continue to see dusky pink and pastels as key colour choices, but we have ensured we have a wide range of colours in stock to suit as many people as possible. Our bridesmaid dresses range in price from approx. £180-£280, and our flower girl dresses (from ages 6 months to 9/10 years) are approx. £69.

Elegance Of Scholes (42)

Who would be an Elegance bride?

Elegance brides tend to be people that want to enjoy their experience in a relaxed and friendly setting, and who appreciate the quality behind a true designer gown such as the ones we stock. The purchase of a bridal gown doesn’t stop with just that one transaction, and with alterations and so on, we can see a bride many times in the run-up to her wedding. For this reason, we pride ourselves on the relationships we build with our brides and its always a proud moment when we see them for their final fitting right before their wedding, knowing that we’ve done everything in our power to make their dress perfect for them.

Whilst not wanting to limit ourselves to a particular ‘type’ of bride, our dresses do fall into a certain price bracket so when someone comes in with a £300-£500 budget, the only way we would be able to help out is by directing them to the dresses in our sale room (which are also stunning, but are often discontinued dresses, or ex-samples that we need to sell in order to make way for new collections).

Elegance Of Scholes (23)

Are you married?

I’m not yet married… but engaged and getting married on June 4th 2016! Everyone is always surprised to hear that I’m the owner of a Bridal Boutique and have never tried on a wedding dress in my life. Before being engaged I didn’t want to jinx it until it was my turn, and now that I am engaged I keep putting it off! Having fitted dresses to so many different people however, I have an idea of the style that will suit my figure so will be limiting myself slightly in that regard (although I can’t say what that style is, in case my fiancé reads this interview!) – and I change my mind every couple of days on my favourite dresses as I see girls trying on the different samples, so who knows which will be my final choice?!

Elegance Of Scholes (3)

How can Brides Up North get in touch with you?

Our website is www.eleganceofscholes.co.uk, you can like us on Facebook, email Cat and the team at info@eleganceofscholes.co.uk or call us on 01274 876659.

Is there anything else that Brides Up North should know?

As well as stocking our beautiful designer gowns, our in-house seamstress (another Cat!) designs and makes bespoke bridal gowns… so if you’re struggling to find that perfect dress but have an idea of what you’re looking for, Cat will be able to make it for you. We also offer a dry-clean and box service, so you can keep your gown for years to come and re-live those memories as often as you like!

Just Dreamy! Supplier Showcase: Dreamcatcher Bridal

May 1st, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

Today I am proud to introduce you to Dreamcatcher Bridal, one of our fabulous Featured Suppliers and definitely worth a visit for all our North West readers on the hunt for their dream dress.  These ladies know their gowns, and goodness, what gowns they stock!  Let’s meet them…

.

Dreamcatcher opened its doors in July 2000, a family business run by mother and daughter team, Gill and Georgina. Having had some bad experiences ourselves during bridal gown shopping and realising that it would be necessary to travel long distances to find designer dresses, we set upon our venture to bring couture designer collections to the Preston area. Gill with a passion for beautiful fabrics and a background in the technical side of dress design and construction and Georgina with the business brains, artist flair and youthful enthusiasm, we knew we’d make the perfect partnership.

.

We have bridal gowns to suit all budgets with bargain sample sale gowns under £500 to new gowns from £650 to £3500.

.

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

Following months of research and planning, the designers at the top of our wish list were Sassi Holford and Suzanne Neville. Both designers of exquisite, classic gowns with amazing cut, structure and style, yet each bringing an individual twist. Sassi the pure genius with lace and Suzanne with the ability to create smooth sculptured bodices that somehow make all brides instantly drop a dress size.

.

At our very first Harrogate Bridal Buyer Exhibition, some 13 years ago, we were fortunate enough to be introduced to Benjamin Roberts and knew instantly that the label was just what we were looking for. With beautiful embroidery and stunning beadwork at amazing prices but still with the quality and structure we weren’t prepared to compromise on.

.

Over the years we have added new designers to our range including Enzoani and Essense of Australia. Enzoani offers a modern European style using soft satins, chic layers, signature high quality and rich detail using the finest Swarovski crystals. Essense gowns feature luxurious fabrics and just the right amount of head-turning sparkle. With the added option of a lace up or zip/button up back this diverse collection is a popular choice with both our staff and brides to be.

.

We are also extremely proud to stock beautiful designs from Anoushka G, perfect for destination weddings, Veromia, for the traditional fairytale wedding and Sonsie by Veromia, a stunning range specially created for the curvier figure. The newest addition to our extensive collection is Anny Lin, offering a definite WOW for the more daring bride. The usual fabrics and delicate, yet stunning beadwork make Anny’s designs stand out amongst the crowd.

.

Our range is so diverse with so so many amazing designs. If absolutely pressed our favourite at the moment is Faye by Sassi Holford. It’s a simple waisted style in rose damask with a plain duchesse satin sash with buttons and large bow detail down the back. The fabric is so unusual, simply subtle and stunning!  Currently lace gowns are particularly popular, with brides looking for a more covered demure look.

.

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

Loving all things that sparkle, we have a fantastic range of accessories, hand selected to complement each bridal gown. With designs from Halo & Co, Polly Edwards, Ellie K, Richard Designs and Bijoux Bec, all offering coordinating headpieces and jewellery handcrafted using Swarovski stones. A large selection of veils from Joyce Jackson and The Couture Veil, designed by Sassi Holford using gorgeous soft vintage tulles with a wide variety of lace edges which perfectly match Sassi’s superb bridal designs. There really is something for everyone!

.

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

We have an excellent selection of bridesmaid’s gowns with collections from JLM Europe, Watters & Watters and Veromia. With traditional bridesmaid’s styles to cutting edge designs all available in a variety of fabrics and colour options. We also have a beautiful collection of silk flower girl styles from Nicki Macfarlane.

.

Not wanting to leave out the Men, we offer an extensive range of high quality hire wear from Peter Posh and Highland wear from Cameron Ross, catering for both traditional and contemporary weddings. When everything’s available under one roof it’s much easier to co-ordinate styles and colours to ensure the perfect match.

.

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

It’s official! We stock some of the best in the business. The recent Bridal Buyer Awards proved to be very successful for some of our designers, not just Bridal designers, but Bridesmaids and accessories too. Massive congratulations to Sassi Holford, for winning British Bridal Designer of the Year 2013, Benjamin Roberts for winning Best Bridal Manufacturer 2013, Sonsie by Veromia for winning Best Plus Size Collection 2013, JLM for winning Best Bridesmaids Collection 2013 and Ellie K for scooping the award for Best Headdress Designer 2013. This we think proves we have fantastic taste and stock the best in the business!

.

Tell Brides Up North a little bit about Fable & Promise

.

Fable & Promise opened its doors in September 2011 but is not an entirely new company.

Before Fable & Promise was born we were a much smaller business: Silver Lining Sewing Rooms, offering bespoke bridal design and professional alterations in Blackburn. Rachel worked there full time with me and mum giving up all our evenings and weekends to help out. We loved that environment and the opportunity to be really creative. We dreamed about the possibility of working together properly but the size and location of the business pretty much dictated how much we could grow. We’d effectively reached our limit in that environment and were looking at our future when we were approached by a local bridal shop looking towards retirement. They didn’t have to ask twice and the rest is history… 6 very short weeks later Fable & Promise was created.

.

.

ZT Photography for Fable & Promise   ZT Photography for Fable & Promise

.

.

What lines of wedding gowns do you stock?

.

San Patrick is our flagship bridal brand: we just love their innovation and style and the quality of their gowns is unrivalled. Their wedding dresses are simply stunning but we love them as a company too; starting out as lace manufacturer they are still a family company 90 years on and you can really tell they care about every one of their brides. It’s hard not to fall in love with them. Fable & Promise are a premier stockist meaning that we carry a wider range of styles than other retailers and we are the only stockist in Lancashire.

.

We are also very proud to stock Linea Raffaelli bridal gowns. Linea Raffaelli isn’t afraid to experiment and their designs really appeal to those brides with more adventurous tastes. Their exquisite designs can use fabrics woven with metal threads and their collections contain some beautiful alternatives to ivory that really flatter all skin tones. There was no hesitation in adding Linea Raffaelli to our collections.

.

We are also massive fans of Mori Lee. They have always been popular with our brides as their new collections are always fresh and extremely fashionable. They really know how to flatter all figures and add sparkle like no-one else. We’re really excited that we have also just extended our Mori Lee collections to include the Julietta range designed specifically for the fuller figure.

.

There is also a new range due in store in a couple of months but we’re keeping this one under our hats for a little while…

.

.

ZT Photography for Fable & Promise

.

.

We hear that you have a bespoke service? Tell us about it.

.

Our bespoke service is really important to us. There are many reasons someone might chose to have a wedding dress or mother of the bride outfit made but predominantly our bespoke customers are after something they can’t find in available collections. We’ve made everything from romantic and ethereal floaty chiffon wedding dresses to ultra dramatic black satin encrusted with blood red handmade flowers. The excitement we feel when we begin a new bespoke creation is just immense and seeing it take shape can be quite emotional.

.

I think there is something about the whole experience too… you bring all your ideas and inspiration, have them transferred to paper, see the design come together in toile form and then choose fabrics and embellishments which results in a totally unique, entirely original work of art that only you will ever wear. That can only be a special feeling.

.

Our bespoke service doesn’t just stop at creating the perfect wedding dress. Our mother’s can also have a unique experience and love being able to have shoes, bags and hats made to match their bespoke outfit.

.

Between the three of us we have a wide range of techniques and expertise under our belt; we love the opportunity to get creative with fabric flowers and intricate beading and Mum loves nothing more than unleashing her creativity on a flat piece of sinamay and turning it in to a cocktail hat or flamboyant fascinator.

.

.

ZT Photography for Fable & Promise

.

.

What lines of accessories do you stock?

.

We are a bunch of magpies and love accessorising. Since we make a lot of our own accessories we maybe expect a higher standard from the designers we stock. We are careful to only carry lines that are handmade with the highest quality materials using the best techniques. That’s why we stock both Richard Designs and Liza Designs -  they have very different styles but both are continually bringing fresh and inspiring designs in tiaras, veils and jewellery.

.

We are always on the lookout for new and interesting accessories to add that finishing touch. We have recently started stocking the most gorgeous crystal bouquets by Couture Crystal & Button Creations. They must spend hours collecting all the perfect trinkets to incorporate into each bouquet and the results are just beautiful. They can be completely personalised as well; adding family heirlooms and special charms or we can even save the hem lace from a wedding dress to be incorporated. We also love our line of lace parasols and bridal umbrellas by Chrysalin… entirely too practical in this British weather.

.

And we mustn’t forget our Rainbow Club and Rainbow Couture shoes and bags. Their designs are extremely fashionable and they offer a range of fits and heel heights. Their dye-ing service is also second to none and fantastic for bridesmaids and mother of the bride outfits.

.

All these ranges are supplemented by our own in-house ranges of bridal headwear, birdcage veils, handmade flower bouquets, shoe clips and garters. All of which can be modified to your heart’s content.

.

.

.

.

Where are you located?

.

We’re located in the centre of Blackburn, Lancashire – the heart of the textile industry (or it was). We’re lucky to be within easy reach of the M6 and M65 meaning we’re privileged to see brides travelling from Liverpool, Manchester and further afield. You can’t miss us really. We’re on the main road into Blackburn from Preston and fortunate to have off road parking.

.

.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

.

We are firm believers that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get beautiful design and quality fabrics. Our designer wedding dresses start at just £500 up to £2000 and with our bespoke service we really are able to tailor your design to your budget.

.

.

.

Do Brides Up North need an appointment?

.

We would always recommend making an appointment as we understand that it can be daunting to know where to start and difficult to navigate your way into layers of tulle and lace. We prefer to work by appointment as this allows us to manage our time and the workroom effectively and ensures you have our undivided attention. It is particularly worthwhile booking an appointment if you want to snap up one of our coveted evening or Saturday appointments and is essential if you know you want the bespoke service as space is limited. Don’t worry if you don’t have an appointment though as we will always try to make ourselves available and will endeavour to help our brides discover their style and find the perfect dress.

.

.

What can Brides Up North expect when they come in to Fable & Promise?

.

Fable & Promise really does offer something different to most bridal boutiques. We have a fantastic team who really do look after our brides. We’re also slightly eccentric which really appeals to those brides who want something more individual. We have been complimented time and again on our friendly and accommodating manner with many of our brides really valuing our ability to cater for the whole wedding party. Our brides really appreciate that we can take the stress out of making sure everything matches and everyone has found something that they really love to wear.

.

.

What is your current favourite gown that you stock and why?

.

This is one of our favourite games and one that has developed its own rituals. Whenever a new collection arrives at Fable & Promise all work stops, the boxes are broken open and the dresses brought out in a flurry of tissue paper and cellophane. The process of scrutinizing the designs begins and we love watching the team assess each new dress. This has actually recently developed into our ‘Dress of the week’ feature on Facebook … with nine of us at Fable & Promise there is definitely a wide range of tastes and it’s great to see how popular our choices are.

.

My personal favourite at the minute is Calais by San Patrick. I love the elegance and 1920’s influence and adore the effect that meters and meters of super soft tulle creates. It’s also flattering for every body shape and beautiful in any size.

.

.

Is there a particular style of dress that is popular with your brides at the moment?

.

We are noticing a couple of trends at the moment – 50’s inspired elegance with crisp lines and nipped in waists and romantic layers of lace.

.

.

How does Fable & Promise provide a different experience to other wedding dress boutiques?

.

The main difference of Fable & Promise is that you really can get everything your heart desires… without compromise. We have fantastic designer collections but if there’s nothing in our collection that ticks all the boxes we have the ability to turn your wildest ideas into reality. Nothing is beyond our grasp.

.

We are also passionate about helping people find other details for their wedding and like to encouraging relationships with other wedding professionals. There is some amazing talent in the wedding industry and it’s great to work with people who also share your passion.

.

We also love to play out and experiment with staged photo shoots and we had such fun with Zoe from ZT Photography and Gail and Kelly from Couture Crystal & Button Bouquets on our exclusive photo shoot for Brides Up North in Blackpool that it really didn’t matter that it was teaming down with rain and as blustery as anything on the end of North Pier.  The day was coordinated by the The Wedding and Party Boutique with fabulous hair and make up by Hazel Tyler.

.

.

.

.

.

Do you stock bridesmaid dresses?

.

We have some stunning bridesmaid dresses to choose from and currently stock Mori Lee, Romantica, Ronald Joyce and Forever Yours bridesmaids. We usually have roughly 30 bridesmaid’s designs in our collection and with all of them available in up to 75 colours, up to size 34 and various lengths the options really are limitless. We also have a new range due in store in August. You could say we have a bit of an addiction. Rachel in particular is a sucker for a rainbow… if our suppliers arrange their collection in a rainbow it somehow seems essential that we have it all. Needless to say if you can’t find what you want from our collection you can always have something made.

.

.

Are you married? What did you wear on your wedding day? What would you choose to wear now?

.

My husband and I got married 7 years ago. Of course we made all our outfits ourselves back when Rachel was seamstress for another bridal shop and the idea of Fable & Promise or Silver Lining was only a dream.

.

I’m a dyed in the wool Goth and the idea of wearing Ivory brought me out in a cold sweat. I knew I wanted something unconventional and right up until buying the fabric I had planned to wear red.  At the last minute I changed my mind and wore black. It was absolutely the right decision and I’ve actually worn my wedding dress several times over the years.

.

If we were getting married now I would probably choose something very similar but having developed so many techniques for embellishments would probably end up even more dramatic.

Do you have any events coming up that Brides Up North should know about?

.

We are actually hosting a wedding marquee as part of the Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society Countryside Experience in Witton Park, Blackburn on 20th May.  We have some fantastic wedding professionals on board offering a wide range of services from wedding flowers by Ewood Florist and photography by Colette Davies to the gogopod photo booth, Sweet Sensation Sweet Trees and Beautifully Vintage china hire. We also have some fantastic catwalk shows lined up showcasing some cutting edge designer gowns and excitingly for us we have invited some of our customers who have had bespoke creations made to come and strut their stuff on the catwalk too! We simply can’t wait!

.

We are also holding a fantastic Prize draw where we have decided to offer up to £1000 off a wedding dress at Fable & Promise as the main prize! If you want to get tickets or more information they can click here.

.

It’s going to be completely different to your standard wedding fair; for a start it’s in a marquee rather than a hotel or stately home. It’s also forming part of a much larger event and is just one of the attractions organised for the day. You will also be able to take in some fantastic craft making, community activities, classic car shows, animal displays and much more. It promises to be a fantastic family day out.

A Wedding Blog Styled Shoot – Winter Bridal Style by Brides Up North

October 10th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

I was recently invited along by the Sunday Sun to act as stylist on a winter bridal fashion shoot at Rockliffe Hall in Darlington.  The edit, plus some advice on winter bridal style courtesy of this was published in the paper yesterday – did you pick up a copy?

.

The team, consisting of Stan and Jane from Stan Seaton PhotographyHooker and Young Darlington, The Rockliffe Hall Spa, Hart Company, Poppy Bridal, Leigh Hetherington and myself worked all day to produce some stunning images.  I share my personal favourites here.  Be inspired!.

.

If you would like to work with me on a styled shoot, please get in touch!

The nights may be longer and the wind may be sharper, but tying the knot during the winter is a great fashion choice. The fabrics can be richer and more sumptuous; the colour palette more flattering; there can never be too much sparkle and you can go overboard on fabulous accessories.

For a true snow princess look, think layers of crisp white tulle, big skirts and lace detailing. The gorgeous gowns by Leigh Hetherington are straight out of a fairy tale. You won’t need a lot of colour, but to keep it pretty, add colour contrasts of pale blue and green. This look is all about the drama, so add a full length veil and touches of diamante sparkle to a pale hydrangea bouquet.

If you prefer a sleeker silhouette, chose fluid fabrics like silk and chiffon and go to town on the accessories and detailing. Feathers, pearls and crystals all work well to create a stylish look with a nod to the season. When it comes to winter bridal accessories, more is more. Jenny Packham has created a complimentary line of feathered shrugs , bejewelled hair vines and crystal cuffs that set off her dresses gorgeously (Jenny Packham is available at Poppy Bridal, Darlington).

A Beauty of a Boutique! Supplier Showcase – The Harrogate Wedding Lounge

July 10th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Yorkshire ladies.  Stop. Right. There.  Before you even think about ordering your wedding gown, pay my lovely friend Hayley at The Harrogate Wedding Lounge a visit.  This wedding blogger wants to move in to Hayley’s gorgeous boutique and sit on her flumpy sofas, flicking through planning guides and ogling the gorgeous wedding dresses forever more!  That ok with you Hayley?

.

.

Anyway.  Let’s talk shop.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: The Harrogate Wedding Lounge

.

.

When did The Harrogate Wedding Lounge open and what is your background?

.
I opened The Harrogate Wedding Lounge on 29th May 2009.

.
After taking voluntary redundancy from my full time job in Leeds I decided it was time to do something I loved. I had my own wedding planning business which was growing and developing nicely on a part time basis and I decided this was the route I wanted to take. The wedding industry is such a lovely industry to work in and bridal fashion and trends were always my favourite part. When an opportunity presented itself to move into existing premises currently used as a bridal shop it just seemed like fate had dealt me a hand. We completely overhauled the then existing shop in just 6 weeks. We replaced all of the designers and stock and created a beautiful, welcoming and homely shop brides can be proud to visit.

.

.

What lines of wedding gowns do you stock?

.
We are very proud to stock some of the industry’s leading names including Maggie Sottero, Ronald Joyce, Madeline Gardner and Justin Alexander Signature.  The designers and their gowns have all been handpicked by us for their quality, structure, fine fabrics, attention to detail and because they are just that little bit different.

.

.

What lines of accessories do you stock?

.
We are well known for our accessories collection! Having gowns that are a bit different means we have to accessorise accordingly and we have great fun choosing our fabulous designs to complement our gowns. We stock everything from birdcage veils to Art Deco and vintage inspired head bands and tiaras. We have lace veils, short funky veils and cathedral veils from industry leaders like Richard Designs. We also have an amazing collection of bridal jewellery from the fabulous award winning Chez Bec (a wedding blog Featured Supplier), stunning vintage inspired headwear and jewellery by Madeline Isaac James and plenty of glam shoes from the likes of Rainbow Couture, Rainbow Club and Shades. We also have lots of quirky extras like “Weddington” Boots, bespoke garters exclusive to The Harrogate Wedding Lounge, parasols, wraps and jackets in lots of fabrics and styles. One of my favourites is the Milan wrap pictured below its so glamorous!

.

.
Where are you located?

.
We are located on the main A59 Between Harrogate and Knaresborough only a 30 minute drive from either Leeds or York and a big bonus is we have free parking – either at the side of our shop or in the small residential cul-de-sac next to our shop.

.

.
Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

.
Our gowns start from around £800 for some of our lightweight more destination style gowns and our top end is currently £2,200.  We do add to our collections all the time but this is the usual price range you would expect to pay for one of our gowns. Accessories start from £70 for veils, £90 for headbands/tiaras and shoes by Rainbow Couture start from £115.

Do Brides Up North need an appointment?

.
We work on an appointment basis to make sure each and every bride gets the undivided attention she deserves. You won’t have to share a changing area, nor sit with other people’s relatives at this special time. At The Harrogate Wedding Lounge we pride ourselves on our personal service and we only ever see one bride at a time. We also give you a generous appointment time of 90 minutes so you can take your time and really enjoy this wonderful experience.

.

.
What can Brides Up North expect when they come in for an appointment?

.
At your first appointment we will sit down and have an initial discussion. We get to know the facts: when is the wedding, where, are you having any bridesmaids, what’s your dress budget etc, then we discuss what you have tried on to date, what you like and don’t like and we talk you through our collections. You are then left to browse the rails for a few minutes while we prepare refreshments for you and your party. We have pink fizz, bucks fizz, orange juice, tea & coffee with a selection of flavoured syrups and lovely little treats to eat. We then review your selection with you, possibly throw in a couple of wild cards of our choice and get on with creating a stunning wedding day look. If at the end of your appointment you require some thinking time there is no pressure, we simply make a note of your favourite gowns and accessories on one of our beautiful keep sake cards and send you away to sleep on it.

Lidia

.

.
What is your current favourite gown that you stock and why?

.
Oh no! I hate that question because we handpick all of our gowns at selected shows throughout the year and it is so difficult to select one as my favourite, I love them all in their own way. My very favourites include the Maggie Sottero Geneva because it has so much amazing detail you just can’t stop looking at it! Maggie Sottero Annabelle is a beautiful fitting dress that is very elegant but also a bit sexy. The Ronald Joyce Lidia has the ability to make any bride feel like a true princess.

.

.
Is there a particular style of dress that is popular with your brides at the moment?

.
A key trend at the moment is backless gowns, they are really popular this season. Glamorous gowns like the Ronald Joyce Sable are a real hit and the Maggie Sottero Bernadette with its beautiful key hole back and lace shoulders is a gorgeous twist on a classic shape. For a more lightweight style or a beach wedding the Caprice is unbeatable! It’s cool, sassy, understated and elegant all in one.

.
How does The Harrogate Wedding Lounge provide a superior experience to other wedding dress boutiques?

.
We are a down to earth friendly team of females who absolutely love what we do! This isn’t just a job for us – we genuinely are so excited about helping you plan your dream day whether that be just your gown, our help with finding other fabulous suppliers or helping with styling ideas too. We are much more than just a dress shop. We offer each bride our personal one to one service too with enhances this special experience.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: The Harrogate Wedding Lounge

.

.
Do you stock Bridesmaid Dresses?

.
We hold around 20 great selling styles from Ronald Joyce in a fantastic selection of colours and fabrics. We don’t stipulate that you have to buy your bridal gown from us either so if you already have your dress you are still welcome to come and view our range of gowns for your best girls. We normally recommend a dedicated bridesmaid appointment and not doing it at the end of your bridal appointment. It adds a sense of occasion for your bridesmaids and means we get to concentrate on you all individually too.
.

.

We hear you offer planning consultations – can you tell Brides Up North a bit about that?

.
We offer our popular Wedding Lounge “Sessions” – these are a perfect way to gather your nearest and dearest who you would like to help with the planning process. Mums and bridesmaids often chip in to give this as a gift to the bride to get her started on the planning. It really is an informal evening full of ideas and advice to set you on your way. The evening is a 3 hour workshop with drinks and treats and offers you great tools along the way. Including guest trackers, budget planners, helpful websites, wedding blogs, planning advice and a few other surprises too! Our planning sessions represent great value at £179 and they will get you off to a fantastic start with the planning aiming to make things clearer in your head.

.

.
What did you wear on your wedding day?  What would you choose to wear now?

.
My dress was very different, it was actually green! Is was by a designer called Catherine Jane and was a two tone shot silk. It shone lots of colours from peacock blue to rich yellow tones, I loved it. I would probably wear something very different now I love the Maggie Sottero Nora dress, it has a low waist so helps to pull in your tummy and it has a real fairytale feel without being too cumbersome to move in. It is very sparkly too .

.
