Yorkshire Fling! Tartan & Lace For A Real Wedding At Bolton Castle

Today’s stunning wedding -  at Brides Up North Featured Supplier venue Bolton Castle – looks oh so Wintery, but actually took place at the end of March over the Easter weekend.  Remember that cold snap?  Luckily Gemma and Asa were well prepared in their gorgeous castle setting for their Yorkshire meets Scotland celebration with some roaring log fires and a helpful piper ready to lend the bride his cape!

Gemma says:  We got engaged on the 10th of December 2011.  It was a Saturday morning and we decided to go for a walk – nothing out of the ordinary there!  We walked up to Mill Gill which is a beautiful waterfall just outside Askrigg and five minutes from our house. While we were standing there Asa said that he had been thinking about things recently so I quickly asked him what he had been thinking about… he then said there was something he needed to ask me so I quickly turned and said “Ask me what, what’s the matter?” His response was “Well if you will shut up for a minute and let me talk I will ask you!”… at that point he got down on one knee and asked! What a total and fantastic surprise (the answer was yes – once I stopped crying)! We carried on up the hill and were the only two in the world who knew! By the time we got home it was lunchtime and we had cheese on toast with champagne – brilliant!

We were married on 30th March 2013 at Bolton Castle, Leyburn. Its beautiful Medieval Castle where Mary Queen of Scots ‘stayed’ for six months!  The venue is somewhere out of the ordinary without being too ostentatious.  We pretty much had free rein to set up and decorate as we wanted, there were no hidden charges for bedrooms and the atmosphere was just fantastic!

We had a joint theme of Scotland and Yorkshire. Everything had to be rustic to show off the castle perfectly.  We chose a colour scheme of white and burgundy with Blackwatch Tartan making an appearance!

I had a beautiful white halter neck wedding dress from the online suppliers JJ’s House. The dress was perfect  Asa wore black tails with grey pin stripe trousers with white cravat from the online supplier Formally Yours.

.

A special mention has to go to Hair by Becci. Becci did our hair and I don’t think she could have done anything better – it was just perfect for the dress, me and the setting!

I had a simple bouquet of white roses for Yorkshire, thistles for Scotland and Tulips to tie in the burgundy and also for Spring!  My bridesmaid Melissa had the same but slightly smaller.  The buttonholes were thistles and white heather – for luck! We used Hutton Flowers of Northallerton who were fantastic.

We had a piper for the day who welcomed the guests, piped me down the aisle and piped us into the breakfast for our first official engagement – an amazing experience!

The day was spent giggling with my closest family and friends. We got married which was the main aim of the day and we introduced a lot of people to our beautiful village as well as Scottish dancing. If I had to pick one favourite moment then it was a moment during our first dance when I had a sneaky peak around me and everyone was smiling and looking so happy – it was just the most humbling feeling ever.

Our fantastic photographers Richard and Caroline Wynn-Davies went above and beyond at every opportunity, this really comes through looking at how relaxed and happy we are in each of the photos – they truly are amazing people!

There were special touches springing up all over the place all weekend! Our favours were homemade heart shaped shortbread (which I baked a couple of days before) and Yorkshire tea bags.  We had Blackwatch tartan table runners over the tables which really brought warmth to the rustic castle.

.

We both work for the Scouts and so named each of the tables after a Scout Activity Badge – caused lots of giggles!

.

.

(c) Richard Wynn-Davies

.

.

I baked and iced our wedding cake as when I looked around at prices I realised I could save an amazing amount of money – I’m a true Scot!  We had one tier of Madeira and two of angus fruit cake (the fruit is soaked overnight in tea).

We had a Ceilidh band made up of three local guys from Northallerton – they were amazing and taught us all the dances, everyone took part! The more commercial bands were an absolute fortune and very specific on how long they would play for. Nimmo Clark and the band played all night!

.

.

(c) Richard Wynn-Davies

.

.

We made the celebrations last the whole weekend! The Friday evening before we invited everyone to join us in the village pub for a drink so people met each other then and on the Sunday we put a big tent up in the back garden and invited everyone and locals from the village for the afternoon/evening to carry on celebrating.

.

The week after the wedding a lot of family and friends had stayed so we got to spend time with people we don’t often see. We both work away a lot so once everyone had gone home we took an extra week off and… we stayed at home – it was perfect! The weather was rubbish so apart from short walks with the dog we just spent time together!

My top tip for other Brides Up North is to keep it small and simple, don’t blow your budget, keep it personal – it is a very very special day so make sure that throughout the day there are things which show why you are perfect for each other.

Congratulations Gemma & Asa!

A Winter Walk: A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Emma & Jonathan

February 6th, 2013 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Wedding In Yorkshire by Richard Wynn-Davies

.

.

As a , I get the privilege of sharing a lot of couple’s most special of days – each different, each lovely.  Friends often ask me if I have favourites.  Of course there are styles I prefer, dresses I lust for and shoes that I sometimes even track down and buy (ahem!)…  but my very favourite celebrations are always the ones where the love shines through.

.

Cheesy, right?  Ah, so sue me.

.

Emma and Jonathan’s Real Wedding by Brides Up North Featured Supplier Richard Wynn Davies is one of those.  Sure, they had a cute theme and a stunning venue, but I didn’t really notice all of that -  I was blinded by their smiles.

.

Which is exactly as it should be.

.

.

Oulton Hall Wedding by Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Emma says:  Jonathan asked me to marry him on 25th August 2010.   It was a big surprise, champagne and sandwiches(!), at the summit of Sca Fell Pike (the highest mountain in England) as part of a trip with our closest friends to the Lake District. Very romantic indeed.

.

We tied the knot on 23rd December 2012 at St. James Parish Church, Manston, Leeds with the reception was Oulton Hall, Rothwell.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

The church was my childhood church, and her parents still have strong connections there.  We fell in love with Oulton Hall from the moment we walked into the entrance. It was the perfect setting for a winter wedding.  We chose a white and silver theme, with hints of brown pine cones.

My dress was a white duchess satin gown, designed by Jonathan and I. I then made the dress with my mum, and I did the holly leaf embroidery on the top of my dress by hand which took a long (!) time. My mum handmade every one of the thirty or so buttons and button loops which made a statement down the back of my dress. The final stitches were put in the dress the night before the wedding… but it was finished – something which at times seemed an impossible goal.

.

My veil was very vintage. It was my mum’s from my parents’ wedding 28 years ago, and it was still perfectly white. It was definitely my something old, and technically borrowed!

.

My satin and lace vintage style shoes were from Wedding Belles Of Otley. And my wintery hair-clip was from Glitzy Secrets.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Peta Franklin, a small independent hairdresser in Crossgates, did my beautiful hair.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Having designed my dress, we then designed and made the bridesmaid dresses (making adaptations from a basic pattern). The bridesmaid dresses were in a silver dupion satin, with a mini-version being made for the flower-girl.

.

We hand-made all nine of the gentleman’s waistcoats, ties and pocket squares from Vogue Patterns.

To make the suits was a slight step too far (though it was considered!) and these were hired from Moss Bros.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

We also hired a 1947 Albion Vintage Coach from Yesteryear Vintage Vehicles which was superb. The staff were incredibly helpful and even managed to get our less able guests onto the coach.

.

.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Every single moment was perfect from the very first moment waking up to sunshine to finally collapsing in a super-king size bed in the honeymoon suite.  Our favourite moment has to be actually getting married, and finally becoming Mr & Mrs. It was so intimate-just beautiful.

We baked 200 mince pies the day before the wedding to give to our guests after the marriage service.

We sourced pine cones from Otley Chevin and Temple Newsam Park, to hand make my pine cone bouquet. We had to wash and dry hundreds of pine cones to find the best ones. Then they were all glitter sprayed and wired to form the bouquet. It looked rather amazing if I do say so myself.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Our photographer was the amazing Richard Wynn-Davies and his lovely wife Caroline, who captured our day perfectly.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Apart from all the sewing projects, we designed all our own table decorations, including sourcing fallen wood from a local forest, and cutting it into discs to form the table centre pieces. These then had a candle on, with a handmade, and hand collected, pine cone wreath surrounding them.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Jonathan hand-drew from an OS map our table plan, which was the map of Sca Fell Pike where we got engaged. We then used the places on our walk for the table names.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

We designed all our own wedding invitations, menu cards, and order’s of service using my hand drawn design.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

We are anything but a traditional couple, as you may have already gathered. Instead of a DJ, we had a pub style quiz, with a side order of cheese and biscuits, a few beers and wedding cake, organised by Jonathan’s brother.

.

Even more unusual was a game of Mr and Mrs, again devised by Jonathan’s brother. Very embarrassing, but great fun for all. Thankfully almost every one of our answers matched. The Groomsmen played live music for the first dance and Jonathan joined in once his dancing duties were fulfilled.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Jonathan planned a surprise honeymoon, and it did remain a surprise until we arrived outside our destination. We went to a small family run restaurant, with rooms, hotel in Sowerby, Thirsk called ‘Oswalds’ for Christmas period.

.

The service was absolutely fantastic, and we felt so special. Being greeted with champagne and strawberries, then sitting by the Christmas tree to open our wedding cards & presents was so special.  The food was out of this world, and we cannot wait to go back again soon.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to start planning early, and be prepared to change your mind. Prioritise the things that will make your wedding day special to you, and decide the things that you can compromise on.

.

.

Richard Wynn Davies

.

.

Congratulations Emma & Jonathan!

Today’s beautiful Real Wedding, sent to me by Brides Up North Featured Supplier and fabulous photographer Richard Wynn Davies and real bride Sian is an absolute triumph in keeping things simple.

Sian and Chris’ white lace and pearls theme is classic and classy, utterly un-dateable and ever chic. This quiet and pale palette shouts “lovely” loud!

I carried a bouquet of white orchids in a tear drop arrangement by Gillian Brown Flowers

My bridesmaids wore cream lace dresses from Dorothy Perkins with ivory satin sashes and the groomsmen were in morning suits from Carl Stuart’s in Ossett.

Dales Delight! A Real Wedding At Bolton Castle – Hannah & Mark

August 24th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

A Real Wedding In Yorkshire by Richard Wynn Davies

.

Nothing like a stunning castle wedding in the Yorkshire Dales to round off another wonderful week of wedding inspiration here at Brides Up North.  With words by real bride Hannah and a stunning set of images from Brides Up North Featured Supplier, Richard Wynn Davies, this is one for the romantics!

.

.

Bolton Castle Wedding by Richard Wynn Davies

Hannah says:  Mark asked me to marry him on 7 April 2011, on a bike ride over Threshfield moor above Grassington, and we were married on 2 June 2012 at St Oswald’s Church, Askrigg followed by a reception at Bolton Castle, Wensleydale.

We chose both venues for the character, the fact that it was a place that we visited often and both loved and for the gorgeous views and that there was plenty for the guests to explore on the day.  We chose a colour scheme of aubergine and ivory.
