Welcome to a new week folks!  After a rare weekend off here at Brides Up North HQ – topped off by an X Factor and Downton Abbey marathon (hell yeah!) -  I’m back and bursting to get going.

I’ve so much wedding pretty to share with you between now and our Bridal Bonanza Grand Wedding Exhibition at Hardwick Hall Hotel this weekend that I’m going to jump right in.  We’re in the North East this morning, as we share in Claire and Chris’ utterly elegant celebration at the ever stunning Rockliffe Hall. Timeless, traditional and totally gorgeous.

Claire says:  We got engaged on Christmas morning 2011 – Chris surprised me with a ring as we opened Christmas presents in front of the tree. We had already been together over ten years but I still wasn’t expecting it!

It was the first place we visited as we had heard very good things about it, and we were blown away by the gorgeous venue! The staff were so helpful and friendly from our first meeting, and they couldn’t do enough for us from start to finish. We viewed a few other places after that, but we couldn’t get Rockliffe out of our heads, nowhere else compared for us! Becci and Colin made sure everything ran smoothly and we felt like we were in safe hands. The toastmaster, Robert Leeming was completely charming and really made the day extra special.

We didn’t have a theme; we just wanted the wedding to be quite traditional and classic, with a colour scheme of pale pinks and greys.

I chose a strapless fishtail dress embellished with crystals from I Do in Bill Quay. I also got my jewellery, hair band and veil from there.  My bridesmaids Ashleigh and Samantha wore short pink Dessy dresses, also from I Do.

Our hair was done by Elaine Rea from Tribeca Boldon and make up by Amy Askew from Aatiqah Boutique Spa. The girls worked wonders on us all!

Our bouquets included pink roses, white freesias, white veronica and eucalyptus, made by Cinnamon Rose. They also supplied the centrepieces of candelabras and roses.

We travelled in a Bentley S2 from Fearon’s, we loved the classic shape and colour of the car.

Our videographer Steve Spowart from Gibside Video Service was brilliant.

Jamie Penfold was our photographer and he was fab. We couldn’t be happier with the photos from the day!

The invitations, orders of service and other stationery were designed by Noble Fine Art. Julia and Charlotte did a fantastic job and were so organised, which took a lot of stress out of it for me!

Gemma of Love Lily Cakes made our four tier cake, and it was delicious! We chose a bottom tier of carrot cake, followed by vanilla sponge, chocolate and fruit cake. She handcrafted flowers to imitate those in my bouquet and she did an amazing job.

Chris’ cousin Caroline made a slideshow of photos of us both, as babies, through our teenage years up to the present day. It was shown just before our first dance and it was a lovely surprise for us, however there were some extremely questionable photos included!

We went to Dance City and had a few lessons with a dance teacher, Sue, who choreographed a first dance routine for us. Although it didn’t go quite as planned on the night, as we didn’t have time to practise in the lead-up to the wedding, we had such a lot of fun doing it and our guests seemed to enjoy us looking silly too!

Jason Isaacs entertained us all and got everyone people dancing early on! He was superb. We then had a DJ from Prime Entertainment, who had us all dancing until the early hours.

For our honeymoon we spent two weeks in El Dorado Casitas in Mexico and it was fabulous – we didn’t want to come home!

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to take it easy on the morning of the wedding.  I’m so glad I got Elaine and Amy to come to my house. There was a really chilled atmosphere as there was no rushing around and we could just relax and be pampered in our PJs!

Old Hollywood. Hepburn Inspired Glamour For A Real Wedding At Rockliffe Hall – Caroline & Kevin

July 9th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

.

What’s a Tuesday afternoon without a huge dose of glam?  Caroline and Kevin’s elegant Real Wedding, with styling inspired by Old Hollywood and one rather iconic actress has plenty.  Flawlessly done, and just beautiful.

Caroline says:  Kev arranged a picnic on a beach in Dubrovnik when we were on holiday last July (2012). He popped the question as the sun was just setting and it was a complete surprise! He did it at the start of our two week holiday so we decided not to tell anyone until we got home. It was exciting keeping it to ourselves and it felt like we were in our own little bubble for the rest of the holiday.

We were married on Saturday 18th May 2013.  The ceremony took place at St Mary Magdalene Church in Yarm. The reception was at Rockliffe Hall in Hurworth-on-Tees.

.

We come from quite traditional families so it was always going to be a church wedding in our home town of Yarm.  We chose to have our reception at Rockliffe Hall as we loved the fact that it had a mixture of old charm and modern decor. The Rockliffe Suite, where the wedding breakfast was served, was light, airy and decorated with neutral tones so we could really put our own stamp on things.

We went for a simple, classic colour scheme of whites, creams, greens and greys.

I love the romance of old black and white Hollywood movies so took inspiration from this. I decided on an Audrey Hepburn style dress, hair and makeup complete with red lipstick.  We used ND Makeup Artists and Carolyn Clayton hair. The girls were lovely and by the end of the morning felt like old friends.

My white wedding dress was Audrey Hepburn inspired with a huge underskirt and train bought from Kathryn Trueman in Morpeth. The back had little ivory buttons and the seamstress added a ivory satin bow.  I grew up in Morpeth so it seemed fitting that I ended up buying my wedding dress there.

The bridesmaids wore Dessy dresses in Amethyst from Elizabeth George Bridal.

.

The groom and ushers hired traditional tails also from Elizabeth George Bridal. We bought Dessy cravats and handkerchiefs to match the bridesmaids.

.

.

.

.

Hart Company run by Suzie Hart arranged the flowers and also provided the table decorations. Suzie even took the time on the wedding morning to show the wedding party how to hold their bouquets and put on their buttonholes.  I had a bouquet of ivory roses, ranunculus and lily of the valley. My mum also had lily of the valley on her wedding day so this had sentimental value.

We felt very lucky to have picked such good suppliers. This really helped on the day as we had nothing to worry about.

.

We used Katy Melling Photography. We could not recommend Katy enough, she captured our day perfectly.

.

.

There was very limited parking at the church so we hired an old London Routemaster bus to transport guests. Knowing that the wedding breakfast would not be served until later in the day, we handed out mini muffins to guests on the bus which were greatly appreciated.

.

A family friend let us borrow his 1938 Rolls Royce and kindly played chauffer for the day even dressing up with coat and top hat. We felt like royalty stepping out of the car.

My dad passed away suddenly three years ago so my mum gave me away. I wanted my dad to be part of the day so the florist added a small locket to the front of my bouquet with a picture of my dad inside. That way I felt like he was with me when I walked down the aisle.

My favourite part of the day was he ceremony and also the short drive from the church to the reception where it was just the two of us in the back of the car. We couldn’t stop smiling and saying ‘we’ve done it’.

We decorated the room using simple, elegant tall crystal vases, candelabras and mercury glass tealight candle holders. The tall vases were a bit pricey but made a big impact when you walked in the room so were well worth it!

The three tier cake was homemade by a family friend. We wanted something a bit different and in keeping with the old Hollywood glamour theme so we attached diamante necklaces to the icing to add sparkle!

We bought old Polaroid cameras from Ebay and put one on each table. Guests were encouraged to take a picture of themselves and stick it in the guest book along with a message. This seemed to go down really well with the guests, especially the kids.

We decided on a ceilidh (Michael McCormick) to get everyone up on the floor and it did the trick. The ceilidh was followed by Flash Dance disco.

.

.

.

.

After the wedding we went to Lake Garda in Italy and in also visited Venice and Verona.

.

.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be that when shopping for your wedding dress be open minded and try on lots of different styles. To start with I was sure I wanted a tight fitting lace dress but it wasn’t until my mum suggested I try a different style, ten shops down the line, that I found ‘the one’ which was the complete opposite of what I had imagined.

.

Also book a videographer! We decided last minute to book Joined Heart following a friend’s recommendation and we are so glad we did. You don’t realise how much you miss.

Elegantly Does It! A Real Wedding At Rockliffe Hall – Rachael & Chris

June 13th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

 Hynes Photography

.

.

I know the venue for this afternoon’s Real Wedding well, having styled some gorgeous bridal shoots there and also acted as bridesmaid at my best friend Rachel’s wedding (which you can see by clicking here), so when Rachael and Chris (another Rachael!) sent me their images – courtesy of Hynes Photography – and told me that they were aiming to have a modern and elegant celebration. I knew that their big day would be just that.

.

.

 Hynes Photography

.

.

Rachael says:  We got engaged at Christmas on a trip to London five months after having our first child Charlie, and were married on 27th October 2012 at Rockliffe Hall in Darlington.

.

We choose Rockliffe Hall cause it was just perfect for us: modern, elegant, high quality and we had been to lots of weddings but none of them at Rockliffe.  We wanted the wedding to be glamorous and romantic to compliment our choice of venue.

My dress was a diamond white, sweetheart neck line, beautiful big dress from Poppy Bridal in Darlington.  I loved it soon as i tried it on.

.

We chose a colour scheme of deep red magenta and white, and my four bridesmaids were stunning in a long fishtail dresses from Marks & Spencer.

.

Chris and the groomsmen wore grey lightweight tails from Affleck & Moffat in Darlington. They looked really smart.   Charlie, my son, and Finley, my nephew, had really cute suits matching the bridesmaids.

.

I carried a bouquet of calla lilies with a hint of pink running through them, very simple but stunning.  Our flowers were from Flower House at Hartburn, Stockton.

.

.

.

.

It might sound strange, but we stayed over together the night before the wedding in the same room! We had an amazing spa experience and bottle of Champagne together the night before and had breakfast in our room on the morning of the wedding.  Unconventional, but perfect for us.

Our entertainment was the Wildcats of Kilkenny – a big knees up! I didn’t stop dancing the whole night (not even for the evening buffet!) it was so much fun and everyone in the room was up doing the Irish jig!  The wedding was intentionally very sophisticated during the day, with a big party at night!  Perfect.

We chose to have cupcakes with a beautiful butterfly design on them rather than a traditional wedding cake.  Our cupcake tower was by Clare’s Cake Shack, Stockton.

.

We didn’t go far on our honeymoon, we had a week in Center Parcs in Nottingham with our son Charlie and then the two of us went off to London for a few days on our own.

.

.

My top tip for Brides Up North would be don’t panic about anything, just relax and everything will happen. It was the best day of my life and I wish that we could do it all over again!

Real Wedding Recap 2012: A Proper Winter Wonderland! A Real Wedding In The North East – Rachel & Ryan

December 24th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Over the festive period I’ll be recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy…

.

Rachel and Ryan's Wedding at Rockcliffe Hall, County Durham by Katy Melling Photography

.

.

Starting off our seasonal recap in style, today I am honoured to share the Real Wedding of one of my best girlfriends in the whole wide World, Rachel. I was lucky enough to be a bridesmaid for Rachel and Ryan, and was more than a little nervous that one of my favourite photographers and Brides Up North Featured Supplier Katy Melling Photography would be there to see me descend into drunken Christmas wedding merriment at what has to be one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever attended (you’ll see!*).

.

.

Rachel and Ryan's wedding at Rockcliffe Hall, Co. Durham

.

.

.

After all, elegance aside, this was also the wedding where I could be found singing shouting Christmas carols at 4am, where my husband set fire to himself on an aisle candle (yes really!) and where a faux snow fight left everyone twinkling!  Proper Geordie fun! I did catch Katy snapping a shot of me taking a big slug of white wine, but it hasn’t made it into the final edit.  Thanks Katy!

.

Without further ado, over to my best friend Rachel: We got engaged on 10th December 2010 in Central Park in New York and were married at home in County Durham on Sunday 18th December 2011, at Rockliffe Hall.  We said our vows in the Rockliffe Suite and then had a drinks reception in the Old Hall while the Rockliffe Suite was done up for the wedding breakfast.

.

.

As soon as we visited Rockliffe we loved it. On the practical side we had a large guest list and it was able to cater for 180. It also had 60 bedrooms so all of the guests who wanted to stay were able to be accommodated.

.

It seemed a bit more luxurious than some of the other venues we visited and was decorated to our taste. It is about 45 minutes away from Newcastle so was fairly easy for our guests to get to. It is just a lovely hotel and felt cosy and we thought it would suit the wintery/ Christmassy feel we were after. It has a lovely area called the Old Hall which we used for the drinks reception and also has a fabulous spa which our guests got good use of the day before and the day after the wedding.

Obviously the wedding was very near Christmas so overall we had a bit of a Winter Wonderland theme.

We also had some Christmas touches like snow on the tables and bauble name holders (by Cox & Cox) and candy canes as favours for people to hang on their Christmas trees after the wedding.

.

Overall, I wanted the wedding to be very white. We had no colour in our flowers and I wanted the room to look white, snowy, twinkly and pretty.  The bridesmaids wore an aubergine colour which was reflected in the ushers’ ties but other than that the rest of the wedding was all white.

My dress was Jenny Packham. It was very detailed and glitzy around the neckline which went down my back and then it had a tulle skirt. I also had a Jenny Packham headdress. I tried on a Jenny Packham dress in a shop in Newcastle but then went to her shop in London as it was a good excuse for a weekend away with my Mum. There were a few that I liked but the one I chose was most appropriate for a Christmas wedding.

We had a lot of music and entertainment during our reception: my good friend Emma Kendall sang during the service, and then we enjoyed the Opus 4 String Quartet, carol singers and some singing waiters, before hitting the dance floor to Jeff Dingle and the Moonswing Trio.

.

Thinking about favourite moments, my mum and dad had organised the singing waiters as a surprise for Ryan and me. I loved this and we were all up dancing on our chairs for an hour so that was really fun. In general I just loved it all as I wanted it to be a massive party and that’s what it was. I also loved the girly time on the morning of the wedding with the bridesmaids and all my family.

After the excitement of the wedding we had a mini moon for a few days to the Feversham Arms in Helmsley and we are hoping to go to New York at the end of the year. We live in Dubai so we wanted to stay in the North East to enjoy the rest of the festive season with our friends and families.

So, it may be a wrap on this year’s Brides Up North Super Showcase Grand Wedding Exhibition (click here for details of our Wedding Exclusives in Yorkshire) but North East brides have still got lots of wedding inspiration right at their fingertips with a jam packed schedule of wedding fairs and events across the region this Autumn.  I’ll be letting you know about the very best here on these pages.

.
Taking place on Sunday September 30th 2012, in the magnificent surroundings of the five-star Rockliffe Hall, just outside of Darlington, the etc Wedding Show will host 30 exhibitors representing the best of the region’s wedding industry.

.
etc editor Georga Spottiswood says: You’re engaged. You may have even set the date. It’s the most wonderful and exciting time of your life. But when the initial buzz has died down and you start to plan the rest of your big day, it can be a bit of nightmare knowing where to start.

.

Having just been a bridesmaid for etc’s Cara Houchen, I understand the stress that brides-to-be can be under. From choosing the wedding stationery to marrying the colour scheme to the table centrepieces and bouquets, it can be a daunting experience.  That’s why we’ve chosen the best the wedding industry has to offer here in the North East and our array of exhibitors will be there to help brides-to-be make their big day go off with a bang.

.
W Salon and Eve Beauty will be there to offer wedding hair and beauty ideas, while Durham-based Ava Rose Hamilton can help you find the dress of your dreams.

.

But it is not just about the brides – prospective grooms can make sure they’re looking dapper on the day with formal wear and suit hire experts Affleck & Moffatt  and Bakers.

.
Stan Seaton Photography and Camera A will show you how they can capture the magic of your big day, while Prime Entertainment and Snaparazzi Photobooths can provide some quality entertainment for your guests.
Flowers by Nattrass will be there to guide brides and grooms through bouquets and buttonholes, while Berry Boutique will be showcasing a beautiful range of bridal bling.

.
And if you want a honeymoon to remember, let the experts at Travel Bureau help you pick a first-class destination.

.
etc publisher Linda Burnside says: Last year was our first ever wedding event and we really did pull out all the stops to make it a top-class day, but we’re hoping this year will be even bigger and better.  The etc Wedding Show will take place from 12 to 4pm. Guests will be greeted with a goodie bag and a glass of champagne, after which they can see what’s on offer and talk to the exhibitors at their leisure. There will also be a glamorous bridal fashion show, with entertainment from wedding swing singer Anthony Stringer.

.
For soon-to-be brides and grooms, and their families, this is one event that is not be missed – even if we do say so ourselves!

.

.

I’ve been really privileged to work with some fantastic regional newspapers and magazines recently as a features writer, and one magazine that I am really looking forward to writing a series of columns for later in the year is etc, a lifestyle magazine for the North East.

.

etc Editor, Georga Spottiswood, is such a lovely lady and so full of inspirational ideas that when she asked me to mention the exclusive event that etc are running for brides in the North East at the end of March at dream venue Rockliffe Hall (the location for a recent bridal fashion shoot that I had the pleasure of styling), I couldn’t wait to tell you fabulous wedding blog readers all about it.

.

This is a ticket only event and numbers are very limited, so call 0191 501 7114 to make sure that you get yours.

.

ETC Wedding Show

.

.

etc say: The happy memories of your wedding day will last a lifetime and at the etc Wedding Show we have everything to make sure you get the day you have dreamed about.

.
Taking place on Sunday, March 25th 2012 at the stunning Rockliffe Hall, a five-star hotel in Hurworth, near Darlington, the day will feature 30 handpicked exhibitors as well as a spectacular catwalk show showcasing the latest bridal gown trends, mother-of-the bride must-haves and men’s formal wear.

.
etc editor, Georga, says: “It is every girl’s dream to have a fairy-tale wedding and the etc team has waved its magic wand to help make that happen. Our event will feature the crème de la crème of the wedding industry and there will be everything from cars and cakes to beauty tips and wedding hair ideas – all the essential ingredients to make sure your big day is one to remember.”

.

Brides-to-be and their families will be given five-star treatment at the wedding show with a glass of champagne on arrival.  They will then get to browse the stands, visualise their wedding ceremony taking place in the elegant Old Hall or glass-roofed Victorian Orangery – which will be set up as if to host a civil wedding – then sit back and relax while etc puts on a glittering catwalk show.

.
The event will take place from 11am to 5pm, with visitors being allocated one of three times slots.

.
etc director, Linda Burnside, said: “From stunning wedding jewellery to chair covers, hats, fascinators and honeymoon ideas, there will be something for every bride at the etc wedding show.  This is an exclusive event and tickets are limited, so I’d advise people to book early.  The etc Wedding Show will be a hugely enjoyable experience – it is no ordinary wedding event.”

.
Sponsors of the etc Wedding Show are Brides Up North favourites: Poppy Bridal, Hooker and Young, Stan Seaton Photography and Simply Bows and Chair Covers.  All will be there showing brides and grooms how to add the special touches to their day.

.

etc has also teamed up with many of the exhibitors to offer one lucky bride and groom the chance to win some amazing prizes.  They will include bridal make-up for the bride on her big day, courtesy of Eve Beauty Darlington, and a mini honeymoon at Rockliffe Hall worth more than £1,000.

.
Tickets cost £7 and are pre-paid only. Call 0191 501 7114.

Blooming Beautiful! A Real Wedding – Julia & Paul

November 29th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

I always love it when I get the chance to feature the Real Wedding of a couple whose engagement pictures I have also included on the swirly silver pages of the wedding blog

.

We first met this afternoon’s couple amongst the spires and turrets of Durham City for their engagement shoot back in June, and today Fyzal Photography shares their big day with us too.  I love it when a plan comes together!

Fyzal tells Brides Up North: Julia & Paul’s Real Wedding was perfect, just perfect!  The couple said “I do!” in a beautiful local church before heading back to the stunning Rockliffe Hall near Darlington for their reception.

.

Julia chose a floral theme for her day, which was reflected in her gorgeous Ian Stuart wedding gown and the amazing floral displays by Suzie Hart of Hart Company.
