Real Wedding Recap 2012: A Proper Winter Wonderland! A Real Wedding In The North East – Rachel & Ryan

December 24th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Over the festive period I’ll be recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy…

Rachel and Ryan's Wedding at Rockcliffe Hall, County Durham by Katy Melling Photography

.

.

Starting off our seasonal recap in style, today I am honoured to share the Real Wedding of one of my best girlfriends in the whole wide World, Rachel. I was lucky enough to be a bridesmaid for Rachel and Ryan, and was more than a little nervous that one of my favourite photographers and Brides Up North Featured Supplier Katy Melling Photography would be there to see me descend into drunken Christmas wedding merriment at what has to be one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever attended (you’ll see!*).

After all, elegance aside, this was also the wedding where I could be found singing shouting Christmas carols at 4am, where my husband set fire to himself on an aisle candle (yes really!) and where a faux snow fight left everyone twinkling!  Proper Geordie fun! I did catch Katy snapping a shot of me taking a big slug of white wine, but it hasn’t made it into the final edit.  Thanks Katy!

.

Without further ado, over to my best friend Rachel: We got engaged on 10th December 2010 in Central Park in New York and were married at home in County Durham on Sunday 18th December 2011, at Rockliffe Hall.  We said our vows in the Rockliffe Suite and then had a drinks reception in the Old Hall while the Rockliffe Suite was done up for the wedding breakfast.

As soon as we visited Rockliffe we loved it. On the practical side we had a large guest list and it was able to cater for 180. It also had 60 bedrooms so all of the guests who wanted to stay were able to be accommodated.

.

It seemed a bit more luxurious than some of the other venues we visited and was decorated to our taste. It is about 45 minutes away from Newcastle so was fairly easy for our guests to get to. It is just a lovely hotel and felt cosy and we thought it would suit the wintery/ Christmassy feel we were after. It has a lovely area called the Old Hall which we used for the drinks reception and also has a fabulous spa which our guests got good use of the day before and the day after the wedding.

Obviously the wedding was very near Christmas so overall we had a bit of a Winter Wonderland theme.

We also had some Christmas touches like snow on the tables and bauble name holders (by Cox & Cox) and candy canes as favours for people to hang on their Christmas trees after the wedding.

.

Overall, I wanted the wedding to be very white. We had no colour in our flowers and I wanted the room to look white, snowy, twinkly and pretty.  The bridesmaids wore an aubergine colour which was reflected in the ushers’ ties but other than that the rest of the wedding was all white.

My dress was Jenny Packham. It was very detailed and glitzy around the neckline which went down my back and then it had a tulle skirt. I also had a Jenny Packham headdress. I tried on a Jenny Packham dress in a shop in Newcastle but then went to her shop in London as it was a good excuse for a weekend away with my Mum. There were a few that I liked but the one I chose was most appropriate for a Christmas wedding.

My bridesmaids wore aubergine one shoulder dresses.  The designer was Alvina Valenta and I got them from Lily White Bridal in Jesmond.

I carried a hand tied bouquet of paper white flowers with brooches inside the bouquet to give it some extra sparkle.  This was by Hart Company.

We had a lot of music and entertainment during our reception: my good friend Emma Kendall sang during the service, and then we enjoyed the Opus 4 String Quartet, carol singers and some singing waiters, before hitting the dance floor to Jeff Dingle and the Moonswing Trio.

.

Thinking about favourite moments, my mum and dad had organised the singing waiters as a surprise for Ryan and me. I loved this and we were all up dancing on our chairs for an hour so that was really fun. In general I just loved it all as I wanted it to be a massive party and that’s what it was. I also loved the girly time on the morning of the wedding with the bridesmaids and all my family.

We had a simple cake made by Gemma at Love Lily Cakes. It was all white and had a flower appliqué on it. We had 3 tiers which consisted of Victoria sponge cake, chocolate cake and lemon cake.

After the excitement of the wedding we had a mini moon for a few days to the Feversham Arms in Helmsley and we are hoping to go to New York at the end of the year. We live in Dubai so we wanted to stay in the North East to enjoy the rest of the festive season with our friends and families.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be just to enjoy it and try and take it in. It is such a fun day but it goes so quickly. We got married 6 weeks ago and it already feels like it was so long ago.

Diary Date: The etc Magazine Wedding Show

September 13th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

So, it may be a wrap on this year’s Brides Up North Super Showcase Grand Wedding Exhibition (click here for details of our Wedding Exclusives in Yorkshire) but North East brides have still got lots of wedding inspiration right at their fingertips with a jam packed schedule of wedding fairs and events across the region this Autumn.  I’ll be letting you know about the very best here on these pages.

.
Taking place on Sunday September 30th 2012, in the magnificent surroundings of the five-star Rockliffe Hall, just outside of Darlington, the etc Wedding Show will host 30 exhibitors representing the best of the region’s wedding industry.

.

etc Wedding Show

.
etc editor Georga Spottiswood says: You’re engaged. You may have even set the date. It’s the most wonderful and exciting time of your life. But when the initial buzz has died down and you start to plan the rest of your big day, it can be a bit of nightmare knowing where to start.

.

Having just been a bridesmaid for etc’s Cara Houchen, I understand the stress that brides-to-be can be under. From choosing the wedding stationery to marrying the colour scheme to the table centrepieces and bouquets, it can be a daunting experience.  That’s why we’ve chosen the best the wedding industry has to offer here in the North East and our array of exhibitors will be there to help brides-to-be make their big day go off with a bang.

.

.

Stan Seaton Photography

.

.
W Salon and Eve Beauty will be there to offer wedding hair and beauty ideas, while Durham-based Ava Rose Hamilton can help you find the dress of your dreams.

.

But it is not just about the brides – prospective grooms can make sure they’re looking dapper on the day with formal wear and suit hire experts Affleck & Moffatt  and Bakers.

.
Stan Seaton Photography and Camera A will show you how they can capture the magic of your big day, while Prime Entertainment and Snaparazzi Photobooths can provide some quality entertainment for your guests.
Flowers by Nattrass will be there to guide brides and grooms through bouquets and buttonholes, while Berry Boutique will be showcasing a beautiful range of bridal bling.

.
And if you want a honeymoon to remember, let the experts at Travel Bureau help you pick a first-class destination.

.

.

Stan Seaton Photography

.

.
etc publisher Linda Burnside says: Last year was our first ever wedding event and we really did pull out all the stops to make it a top-class day, but we’re hoping this year will be even bigger and better.  The etc Wedding Show will take place from 12 to 4pm. Guests will be greeted with a goodie bag and a glass of champagne, after which they can see what’s on offer and talk to the exhibitors at their leisure. There will also be a glamorous bridal fashion show, with entertainment from wedding swing singer Anthony Stringer.

.
For soon-to-be brides and grooms, and their families, this is one event that is not be missed – even if we do say so ourselves!

.

.

Tickets for this event are free, all you have to do is pre-book at www.etcnortheast.co.uk or call 0191 501 7195.

An Exclusive Day Of Wedding Inspiration: It’s The ETC Wedding Show – Coming Soon

February 22nd, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Stan Seaton Photography

.

.

I’ve been really privileged to work with some fantastic regional newspapers and magazines recently as a features writer, and one magazine that I am really looking forward to writing a series of columns for later in the year is etc, a lifestyle magazine for the North East.

.

etc Editor, Georga Spottiswood, is such a lovely lady and so full of inspirational ideas that when she asked me to mention the exclusive event that etc are running for brides in the North East at the end of March at dream venue Rockliffe Hall (the location for a recent bridal fashion shoot that I had the pleasure of styling), I couldn’t wait to tell you fabulous wedding blog readers all about it.

.

This is a ticket only event and numbers are very limited, so call 0191 501 7114 to make sure that you get yours.

.

ETC Wedding Show

.

.

etc say: The happy memories of your wedding day will last a lifetime and at the etc Wedding Show we have everything to make sure you get the day you have dreamed about.

.
Taking place on Sunday, March 25th 2012 at the stunning Rockliffe Hall, a five-star hotel in Hurworth, near Darlington, the day will feature 30 handpicked exhibitors as well as a spectacular catwalk show showcasing the latest bridal gown trends, mother-of-the bride must-haves and men’s formal wear.

.
etc editor, Georga, says: “It is every girl’s dream to have a fairy-tale wedding and the etc team has waved its magic wand to help make that happen. Our event will feature the crème de la crème of the wedding industry and there will be everything from cars and cakes to beauty tips and wedding hair ideas – all the essential ingredients to make sure your big day is one to remember.”

.

Brides-to-be and their families will be given five-star treatment at the wedding show with a glass of champagne on arrival.  They will then get to browse the stands, visualise their wedding ceremony taking place in the elegant Old Hall or glass-roofed Victorian Orangery – which will be set up as if to host a civil wedding – then sit back and relax while etc puts on a glittering catwalk show.

.
The event will take place from 11am to 5pm, with visitors being allocated one of three times slots.

.
etc director, Linda Burnside, said: “From stunning wedding jewellery to chair covers, hats, fascinators and honeymoon ideas, there will be something for every bride at the etc wedding show.  This is an exclusive event and tickets are limited, so I’d advise people to book early.  The etc Wedding Show will be a hugely enjoyable experience – it is no ordinary wedding event.”

.
Sponsors of the etc Wedding Show are Brides Up North favourites: Poppy Bridal, Hooker and Young, Stan Seaton Photography and Simply Bows and Chair Covers.  All will be there showing brides and grooms how to add the special touches to their day.

.

etc has also teamed up with many of the exhibitors to offer one lucky bride and groom the chance to win some amazing prizes.  They will include bridal make-up for the bride on her big day, courtesy of Eve Beauty Darlington, and a mini honeymoon at Rockliffe Hall worth more than £1,000.

.
Tickets cost £7 and are pre-paid only. Call 0191 501 7114.

Blooming Beautiful! A Real Wedding – Julia & Paul

November 29th, 2011 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

I always love it when I get the chance to feature the Real Wedding of a couple whose engagement pictures I have also included on the swirly silver pages of the wedding blog

.

We first met this afternoon’s couple amongst the spires and turrets of Durham City for their engagement shoot back in June, and today Fyzal Photography shares their big day with us too.  I love it when a plan comes together!

Fyzal tells Brides Up North: Julia & Paul’s Real Wedding was perfect, just perfect!  The couple said “I do!” in a beautiful local church before heading back to the stunning Rockliffe Hall near Darlington for their reception.

.

Julia chose a floral theme for her day, which was reflected in her gorgeous Ian Stuart wedding gown and the amazing floral displays by Suzie Hart of Hart Company.
