Beautiful On A Budget: A Real Wedding In The North East – Bryde & Rob

December 16th, 2012 | Julia Braime

Middlesbrough Wedding by Sally Thurrell Photography

.

.

Welcome to Sunday Brides Up North.  The air may be filled with freezing fog, but look closely and you’ll see fairy lights twinkling through the grey:  there’s only one working week to go until Christmas!  As you wind down in the office, indulge in the communal Quality Street and take a few more long lunches than normal, make sure to stop by as there’ll be a double dose of wedding pretty waiting for you on these pages right up until the big day itself.

.

Speaking of pretty, today we are in Middlesbrough for the beautiful wedding of Bryde and Rob, who are proud to have brought their special day in on budget without compromising on style.  It prides me to feature weddings of every style, denomination and price point here on Brides Up North:  basically, if it’s stunning, it’s in.  Bryde and Rob’s wedding is most certainly in – by penny pinching on the things that were less important to them, they added more costly details where it mattered and carried off the whole celebration with aplomb!  With images by Sally Thurrell Photography

Bryde says:  The day that we got engaged I came home from work to find our apartment filled with candles, a piece of classical music playing and rose petals all over the floor, leading to Rob kneeling in the bedroom with the most beautiful engagement ring. It was a day before we were off for a weekend away together to celebrate our second anniversary.

We were married on August 10th 2012 at Ormesby Hall in Middlesbrough.

.

.

We were on a tight budget as I’m still a student but we felt that the ceremony venue was the most important part of our day, so after months of looking and getting very nervous that we’d never find the perfect place, we finally came upon Ormesby Hall, that was in our price range and fit our theme of a English country garden wedding. It was absolutely beautiful.

.

We both love the 50’s and 60’s eras so we decided on a vintage theme with lots of lace, a pastel colour scheme and charity shop nick-knacks which were essential to us staying within budget.

.

.

.

.

.

My wedding dress was always going to be lace, but finding a vintage inspired lace dress within budget was the hardest part of the whole wedding. I finally found my perfect dress, on eBay of all places for £85.

.

Everyone commented on how beautiful the dress was and when they found out how cheap it was they were shocked to say the least. It just shows you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a perfect day.

.

.

Sally Thurrell Photography

.

.

My bridesmaids wore beautiful, pale pink chiffon, floor length dresses from www.missguided.com, with our flower girls in ivory tea dresses from eBay and the men wore King Edward suits from Psyche in Middlesbrough.

.

Although we chose a pastel colour scheme I didn’t want to put the men in anything too feminine or garish so Rob decided on the colour of the suits. So I was relieved when I saw him and the groomsmen looking very dapper in black and ivory suits!

My bespoke lace veil (which I actually loved more than my dress) was created by the talented Katy at What Katy Did Next. She also created our own personal cake toppers which our guests were very fond of.

.

.

.

.

.

.

My bouquet was filled with pale pink and ivory roses, with sprigs of lilac and greenery. I wanted the flowers to look very natural and not too tidy; our florist did a great job.

.

My Granddad has a beautiful garden, so it was wonderful for his flowers to decorate our reception, he even created the bouquets for our flower girls himself. We also had the reception filled with candles, tea cups and vases that had been collected by many of our friends and family.

.

.

We found our amazing 60’s wedding car, The Digby at Lovedubcars.  I’d recommend their company to anyone, and our driver was lovely.   I travelled to the ceremony with both my Mum and Dad with me in the car, as I’m really close to both my parents and my Mum was a massive part of my day so I wanted her with me too. And on the way to our reception Rob and I enjoyed champagne with the roof down, which led to lots of cheering and beeping from onlookers. It was so much fun.

My favourite part was the ceremony. Rob had sworn he wouldn’t cry but as I walked down the aisle, to the same piece of classical music that Rob had played when he proposed, he was crying his eyes out, as were were all three of my sisters. My youngest sister Annie gave an emotional reading of Bob Dylan’s Forever Young, I think by the end of it there wasn’t a dry eye in the place. After our vows we walked down the aisle to the Match of the Day theme tune, much to everyone’s amusement and we drank champagne in the gardens with all our loved ones, and the weather was perfect!

Our photographer Sally (Sally Thurrell Photography) was just like having a lifelong friend with me, as soon as she arrived on the morning she gave me a massive hug and my family loved her. Having a good relationship with her helped a lot.

For our wedding cake, we had my own personal favourite from The Olde Young Teahouse made which was a raspberry, coconut and chocolate cake, Rob’s favourite which was a Dime Bar cake, and a classic chocolate sponge with vanilla cream and strawberries.

.

.

Sally Thurrell Photography

.

.

Sally Thurrell Photography

.

.

My Dad was an unexpected piece of entertainment when he brought out his guitar for his speech, which was lovely as he had done the same at his own wedding to my Mum 11 years ago. We had a DJ for our evening reception who kept us dancing all night to classics by Elvis Presley and The Beach Boys

.

.

Sally Thurrell Photography

.

.

We stayed in a log cabin at Whinstone View the next day for the weekend, and four days later we set off for a 5* all inclusive week in Egypt.

.

.

Sally Thurrell Photography

.

.

Sally Thurrell Photography

.

.

Even though our wedding was cheap compared to what is normally spent on the average wedding, I don’t think that effected the quality of the day at all, so my top tip for other Brides Up North would be to shop around, eBay was a godsend and have a dig through loads of charity shops for decoration ideas, and if you make invites, table plans and decorations yourself, it’s not only cheaper but it adds a personal touch to the day. At the end of the day it’s about you marrying the person you love, so don’t be nervous, ha!

.

.

Congratulations Bryde & Rob!

Just Add Icing Sugar! A Retro Styled Bridesmaids’ Inspiration Shoot In The North East

June 21st, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

A Retro Bridesmaids' Shoot by Sally T Photography

.

.

I’ve arrived in Knutsford and am hard at work styling up The Belle Epoque for tonight’s Brides Up North Tweet Up North West.  I’m ridiculously excited.

.

I have a fabulous team behind me, so big ups and snaps for Simply Bows & Chair Covers, Laurel Weddings, All Wrapped Up Events, The Cheshire Cat Cake Company, Lilybud Cupcakes, Fonix Music and Martin Hambleton Photography who are all helping me out today.  Official photographs coming soon.

.

Once again, I wouldn’t leave you without something extra specially gorgeous to muse on here on these swirly silver pages, so step forward (regular guest blogger) Katy of What Katy Did Next and her team of retro magicians for a beautiful vintage inspiration shoot with a focus on bridesmaids and wedding guests.  They need something lovely to wear too you know!

.

I’ll see you lovely lot bright and early tomorrow.  Maybe.

Katy says:  Organising photo shoots and styling up my headwear, has quickly become one of my favourite parts of being in this industry. I sometimes design and make my pieces with a final shoot in mind – kind of backwards but it works for me. When college friend Lauren Crawford mentioned getting some professional images of her fabulously quirky, vintage style home wares for her business ‘Thimble & Bobbin’ I jumped at the chance to style a colourful retro photo shoot – focusing on bridesmaids and wedding guests this time – and involving a handful of local and handmade suppliers.

Lauren is inspired by all things vintage, retro and kitsch. She creates framed original screen prints, quirky cushions, wedding gifts, bunting and other household knick-knacks. With this theme in mind, and the this year’s Jubilee celebrations, I set my mind on a 1950s Britain theme with colourful baking scenes, beautiful dresses and hair and make up to match.

After finding the perfect venue in the amazingly decorated, self catering holiday cottages Bousdale Farm, I gathered props from various suppliers to show off the beautiful building and versatility of Thimble & Bobbin’s products in the home. Tea with Ruby is an amazing china hire company in the Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire area run by the very lovely Jane Day. Jane was a great help and instantly latched on to my ideas, helping me out with my ever growing prop shopping list.

The beautiful Northern models Beth Dooley and Pippa Welch were made up very glamorously by the amazing Make Up by Jo & Vintage Tinsel hair styling – who expertly added vintage glamour to the event. After using Alexandra King from Make Me A Dress in my previous shoot, it was lovely to borrow dresses from her again. Bright colours I had shied away from before to promote my bridal headwear were now top of the list and I loved being able to show off even more of Alexandra’s incredible work.

The marvellous aprons were handmade by Nikki Williams from Pinnikity, a delicious range of oilcloth aprons and retro influenced cotton aprons for both adults and children. Their oilcloth aprons can be personalised with any message or your own logo – great idea for your hen party ladies!

Extra props were provided by Alexandra Garrity Art – her painted canvases suited the shoot style down to a ‘t’ particularly her cupcakes and super cute mini French Fancy canvas. Beautiful hand printed fabrics from Lillian’s House were draped over furniture adding a street party style to certain areas of the cottage.

It was a real joy to work on this shoot with so many talented handmade and local businesses. I managed to create a mini head wear collection consisting of six colourful retro style head pieces, which would be perfect for a unique daring bride, bridesmaids, wedding guests, or simply a day at the races? All which will be available to order on my website in the next couple of weeks.

Wedding Blog Fashion Exclusive: What Katy Did Next? She Named Couture After Meeee!

February 7th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Sally Thurrell Photography/ What Katy Did Next

Julia

.

.

OMG OMG OMG I am all of a flutter!  Not only to I have a wedding blog fashion exclusive to share with you this morning that is possibly one of the most well executed bridal inspiration shoots that I have seen yet (and trust me, I see A LOT!), but one of the fabulous stars of the show is actually named after me!

.

And it isn’t a coincidence!

.

When the lovely Katy of What Katy Did Next got in touch to tell me that she had named a piece in her new collection after me, I was super excited.  Then I saw the “Julia” (above – far too beautiful and refined to have my name attached to it – I’m writing this in joggers and a hoody at 1am!) and was out of this world excited.  And then I saw these images.

.

Floored.

.

If you are planning a vintage/ Alice themed/ onehelluvagorgeous wedding… take note.  Oh, and p.s: who doesn’t have a total girl crush on Alice right now?!

.

.

.

Lets hear from the lady herself: After itching to get creative with styling another photo shoot, one of my Real Brides from the Summer got in touch to tell me about her vintage china & prop hire venture.  My fiancé and I designed and built Lynsey’s website for her and thought it only right to celebrate with a photo shoot.  It may sound clichéd but with the Vintage china and tea party vibe, it felt only right to have a go at the Alice in Wonderland theme.  Our idea was to keep it timeless, pastel and vintage themed without sinking in to the overdone slightly cheesy style.

With the theme in mind I was able to work on something a little more extravagant and flouncy in my collection. I had had a few Mother of the Bride’s approach me at wedding fairs enquiring about fascinators, so I used this opportunity to showcase some of my ideas. I wanted the collection to be primarily influenced by a demure, Victorian style ‘Alice’ whilst reflecting the fun of the book with a little twist, which is where the idea to use another model and flip the idea of a male white rabbit to make it glamorous, flirty and fun.

After getting a few other amazing suppliers involved I managed to find a little gem of a venue in Riding Farm Cottages. The cottages were in a little cluster not too far from Beamish and surrounded by peaceful countryside. The early January weather was slightly windy and wild for our shoot so we made the most of the beautiful country style that the cottages had.

The shoot was amazing fun, despite the Wintery weather and the fact that our photographer’s car broke down, conked out and died on the way there! It was great to work with so many talented suppliers from up and down the UK, including our two gorgeous models Nathalie and Katie. I would thoroughly recommend each and every one of them.

Let’s find out a little bit more about this fabulous friend of Brides Up North and her gorgeous creations.  .

.

Over to Katy:  I started up What Katy Did Next a few years ago alongside my Degree course in Textiles and Surface Design. The course was a huge inspiration and fuelled my passion for all things handmade. As soon as I got engaged in 2009 I was practically addicted to wedding blogs, and started sketching a few bridal headpieces as a way to ‘pretty up’ my short hairstyle. After a push in the right direction from photographer Sally Thurrell who had me design and make an awful lot of her wedding accessories, i set about designing my first bridal headwear collection.

.
After a wonderful trial and error type journey my collection was born. It consists of twenty pieces split into four sections – Bohemian, Classic, Romance & Vintage. I realised I couldn’t stick to one theme, purely because the handful of brides who contacted me after Sally had such different tastes and I wanted a collection that could promote all these styles. I kept the Classic bride pale and interesting, adding touches of pink and floral to Romance, feathers and sparkle for the Vintage bride and hand cut leather butterflies and dried lavender for a Bohemian feel.

.
The handmade nature of my work is a huge bonus for clients who want something that little bit different. I am happy to work with brides on commissioned pieces and have already worked with a lot of Mother of the Brides helping design pieces to match their outfits. My website showcases my headwear with a guide price so that custom orders can be made, and as the pieces are made to order they are easily changed to match each bride’s requirements.

I also have a lot of fun creating other wedding accessories. My love bird & peg doll cake toppers are hugely popular at the moment, with couples being able to personalise styles, colours and fabrics. My sequin heart shoe clips are a hit with bridesmaids and I have recently added garters and ring pillows to my list of products.

Live – Laugh – Love: A Styled Shoot

August 31st, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Don’t you just love a four day week?

.

I’m celebrating love on Brides up North today with a styled shoot sent in to me by friend of the wedding blog, Sally Thurrell Photography.  I love to feature collaborations between Northern wedding industry suppliers, and this one is just lovely, showcasing some rocking accessories.

.

Here is just a selection of my favourite images from the day – to see more, head over to Sally’s blog.  And…if you like what you see here, there is a little black book of wedding suppliers at the end of this post.

Sally says: When asked if I’d be interested in doing a shoot with a vintage twist I jumped at the chance! Joanna from Tees Valley Weddings had rounded up a team of local suppliers from models to hair & make up to dress hire, and one sunny Sunday we all met up at the gorgeous venue, Whinstone View near Great Ayton, North Yorkshire to get cracking.

I have a lovely engagement  shoot to feature this morning from a North East photographer who has recently started out with her business.  I tell you what, if she keeps turning out images like these she’ll soon be in huge demand.  It’s a pleasure to introduce Sally Thurrell Photography, Lynsey and Matt, and a vintage picnic engagement shoot.

Over to Sally: I’ve had a handful of commissions for weddings and was lucky enough to have a fabulous couple called Matt and Lynsey who were up for doing an engagement shoot. They knew exactly what they wanted having been so inspired by the blog world and immediately suggested Crook Hall in Durham for a location with it’s wild flower gardens and view of the Cathedral.

They both have a love for film and lomography cameras as well as anything retro and vintage and wanted the shoot to feature this. They are getting married in just less than 2 weeks in St Marys College, Durham with a retro vintage old-school-days theme.
